Neocolonialism (Conduct of Compradors) – Part 2
2008-07-06 01:05:12
(Continuation of - Neocolonialism (Origin of Compradors) – Part 1 )The influence of Western rifle on Sri Lankan politics was first witnessed in 1556 when King Buvanekabahu-VII was ‘accidentally’ shot through the heart by a Portuguese, and his grandson, prince Dharmapala, under the ‘protection’ of King Emmanuel of Portugal, ascended the throne of the Kotte Kingdom as Don Juan Dharmapala and his queen, Kusumasana Devi, as Dona Catherina. Later the rifle was supplemented by the Bible and the Portuguese finally had a puppet king in Sri Lanka. In 1815, the British easily conquered the kingdom of Kandy due to support of comprador leaders in the coastal areas as well as power struggle in up-country elite (‘radala’) leaders. The common people of up country rebelled against the invader...

Struggle of UNP leadership and Major General Janaka Perera’s enter into politics
2008-06-21 13:20:41
The leadership crisis of UNP has been the talk of SL politics for some time. Ranil Wickramasinghe is now facing immense pressure even from his close allies to step down from his post. The nomination of former military veteran Major General Janaka Perera for the post of Chief Minister of North Central Province has been one of the outcomes of leadership crisis in UNP. This nomination would have never been on the card, if UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe was in a stronger position.Janaka Perera is one of the most respected General in Sri Lanka Army. LTTE feared him more than any one else in the battle field. He managed to keep the people in Weli Oya area despite the LTTE terrorist attacks on civilians. He had to work clo...

Edicts of King Asoka – A window into shape of Buddhist government
2008-06-17 10:39:34
Asoka's edicts are to be found scattered in more than thirty places throughout India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The edicts are mainly concerned with the reforms he instituted and the moral principles he recommended in his attempt to create a just and humane society. As such, they give us little information about his life, the details of which have to be culled from other sources. The purpose of the edicts was not to expound the truths of Buddhism, but to inform the people of Asoka's reforms and to encourage them to be more generous, kind and moral.Asoka frequently refers to the good works he has done, although not in a boastful way, but more, it seems, to convince the reader of his sincerity. In fact, an anxiousness to be thought of as a sincere person and a good administrator is pr...

The heritage of the Bhikkhu in Sri Lankan politics – part 2
2008-06-14 11:39:41
The Portuguese periodWhen Portuguese first arrived in Sri Lanka in 1505, the country was politically broken up as result of internecine feuds. With the general degeneration of the island the position of the Buddhism and bhikkhus declined. This weakness gave ample opportunities for the Portuguese to establish and stabilize their rule over the Maritime Provinces without much effort. The Portuguese deprived the Sinhalese of both their freedom and wealth and decimated them. Nothing worthy of mention was done for the development of the provinces they ruled. However, special care was taken to propagate Roman Catholicism. To achieve this Portuguese resorted even to killing, torturing, and brutalizing the native population. A non-Christian was considered an enemy of Portugal and Jesus Christ. In ord...

The heritage of the Bhikkhu in Sri Lankan politics - part 1
2008-06-14 11:35:11
The history of Sri Lanka bears repeated evidence to the fact that whenever the occasion arose for monks to contribute their share, in whatever form or manner, for the protection of the country and the religion, they have unflinchingly raised to the need of the hour. Likewise it was customary for these kings of the past to consult the bhikkhus on all important occasions and problems. The image of the Buddhist monk as a public leader engaging in social and political activities has been obscured, deliberately so, by Western colonialists and their accompanying Christian missionaries. By imposing particular type of Christian monasticism upon the Buddhist monks, restricting their activity to individual purification and temple ministries, the colonial administrators dispossessed the bhikkhus of th...

Pilliyan’s Visit to Dalada Maligawa and crocodile tears of looters of Jaffna library
2008-05-26 23:54:13
One of the very first functions of Chief Minister of Eastern province was to visit Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. This happened to be a historic occasion in Sri Lanka history. Sri Dalada Maligawa was attacked by LTTE terrorists in 1995 killing many devotees and severely damaging the sacred place. Dalada Maligawa is the most sacred place of whole Buddhist world where tooth relic of the Buddha is placed. Sri Lankan Buddhists are privileged to have this holy asset that is respected by millions of Buddhists in the world. From ancient days the tooth relic is cared and worshipped in similar manner to worshipping the living Buddha. It is sheer cultural jealousy of LTTE terrorists that lead to attack of Sri Dalada Maligawa. Not only Dalada Maligawa, but also Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi (Bo tree) of Anuradh...

Decisive factor on winning or loosing fight against terrorism
2008-05-26 23:30:07
The Sri Lankan nation has to decide on if we are going to fully defeat and eradicate terrorism from this emerald island or are we going to mere control terrorism and enter into another round of bargaining with terrorists. Now we have no doubt at all that our heroic military forces are well within the reach of defeating LTTE terrorists in their own den in Wanni jungle.Unfortunately we are a sort of miserable nation that has let the development and progress of individual into various myths including horoscope, auspicious time (nakataha, rahu kalaya). We have let ruling and manipulating the national policies into the hand of feeble politicos, so called international community, media and INGO mafia. Finally we have let protecting our motherland into the han...

Defence.lk defeat Tamilnet in popularity
2008-05-21 22:35:59
The winning or loosing of a war is not solely determined by the gun power of the battlefield. It is moral support for person behind those weapons that matters most. It is not only those individuals in the battlefield, but the will power and aspiration of the whole nation that build up the necessary momentum to defeat the enemy. When Mahinda Rajapaksa government was elected by the common people of the country, the arm forces of the Sri Lankan government had been fighting against LTTE terrorism for over two decades. It is the same security forces that has fully cleared and restored democracy in entire Eastern province and they are now tirelessly marching towards the den of terrorist leader Prabakaran in all fronts. It is military and more importantly political leadership that has made the dif...

2008-05-21 22:35:20
The Buddha was born as a human being and became the enlightened one with his own effort and long struggle. It was simply the compassion towards all being that led the Buddha to preach his finding (dhamma). Thus he became the teacher of not only human being but for all other super human beings including gods of higher realms. His doctrine consist of anithya (impermanence), Dukkha (non satisfactoriness, suffering) and Anathma (no self, soul or control) nature of every being fully disclosed the reality of life. His teaching has guided millions individuals to liberate from suffering and also make this world a better habitable place. | LTTE set new example in exploiting sport for terrorism |
2008-05-13 08:57:39
LTTE had been setting new examples in terrorism in the past. They established the craft of using suicide bombs to the world. Most of LTTE suicide bomb missions have utilized women. LTTE has been identified as a terrorist organization having the highest number of child soldiers in their military wing. They have already killed leaders of two countries including Rajeev Gandhi, former prime minister of India and R. Premadasa, former president of Sri Lanka. They have killed large number of democratically elected politicians in Sri Lanka. In the past LTTE terrorists massacred hundreds of devotees at ‘Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi’ in Anuradhapura, which is highly regarded as one of the most sacred place for Buddhists. LTTE have ki...

The result of the election: the victory for democracy and defeat for separatist terrorism
2008-05-13 08:57:06
The long march of democracy in Eastern province started with the liberation of Mavillaru sluice gate from LTTE and restoring the supply of water for the innocent farmers in the area. It was a time when LTTE artillery were even targeting Tricomalee town and strategic Navy camp as a result of shameful CFA signed by UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha and Prabakaran. The monks of JHU timely influenced the government to take speedy action at a time when new UPFA government seemed to be trapped with the CFA signed by previous UNP leadership. The success of Mavillaru operation not only prevented another attempt of LTTE to chase away Sinhala and Muslim farming community from Eastern province, but also mark the beginning or new democratic era in Eastern province.De...

The agenda of LTTE: Formulating infertile political leadership in the country
2008-05-13 08:56:28
For over two decades, it is only a single military and political leadership that has been prevailing under the fascist rule in the Wanni jungle. That is LTTE self appointed supremo Piripaharan. In the mean time, there have been five presidents ruling the country and military leadership has passed from hand to hand due to logistics and other rules of the country. Piripaharan is having only a single mission that is to defend and rule his territory by fascist iron fist. He has simply killed and eliminated political and military threats from the Tamil society. In the contrary, the political leadership in the South has to pay attention to multitude of problems of the country ranging fro...

Bomb blasting in public transport – Ruthlessness Vs. recklessness
2008-05-13 08:55:59
The defeated LTTE terrorists have once again revealed their cowardice by targeting civilians in a bomb blast in public transport. This is just two days after they lost their forward defense line in the north front and completely lost their territory of Madu area south of the tiger den. Since terrorists are no longer capable of facing security forces, their only option is to try and inflict physical fear towards the civilians by mass murdering and killing. Of course there is hired media mafia backed by INGO’s in the south to transfer this physical fear in to fear psychosis in the society aiming at jeopardizing the victory against terrorists. This is not the first bomb blast in public transport. We all must be shameful a...

Lal Kantha - The brain child of UNP media front
2008-05-13 08:55:27
Once UNP lost the presidential election in November 2005, they realized that they are no longer going to win the heart of people over UPFA government under Mahinda Rajapaksa. In 2005, Mahinda Rajapaksa won the election without any support from his own party leader Chandrika Kumaratunga or his deputy nominee from his party Anura Bandaranayke. When key members form Mahinda Rajapaksa’s own party was secretly campaigning against him, it was JHU and JVP that come to support him. Wimal Weerawansa played a key role on behalf of JVP in the presidential campaign for Mahida Rajapaksa. In the post defeat analysis UNP think tank clearly identified the fact that as long as UPFA get the support of JVP, they are no longer in a position to challenge the government.UNP knew that, due to ideological diffe...

2008-05-13 08:54:39
Nowadays, it is not with the nature’s call of “koho.. koho..”, but with noise of various merchants that first reminded the arrival of New Year. Still we have managed to preserve our traditional values with our Avurudu celebrations. The New Year is the time when whole family gets together and celebrates. Luckily we are still not confined to the atomic family and every one look after not only their parents but grand parents and other relatives. New Year is the time for those who spent time in the hustle and bustle of the town to go back to their village and enjoy the serenity of nature.Remember our heroesWhile we all are celebrating the New Year with whole families in the South, there are thousands of our fellow youth engage in fierce battle to prote...

Wimal Weerawansa – An extraordinary leader among the ordinary
2008-04-09 00:19:05
The marketing people can temporally blow up character of an ordinary person using well planned publicity campaigns on different themes. The white feather of a feeble clown may be presented to general public as a prince of peace. Licking of boots of colonial masters may well be presented as international diplomacy. However those are mere artificial boosting and dumb character will surface with time.In the same time, there are extra ordinary people who are born gifted. They have personality that is unique and excel in multitude of disciplines. Wimal Weerawansa is clearly fallen into that rare category. He is a natural born leader with genuine attraction of common people of the country. He is not mere a politician or political activist, but a man with great v...

Killing of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle: A lesson for all the politicians in Sri Lanka
2008-04-06 20:07:09
Mr. Fernandopulle is one of the most popular politicians in Sri Lanka. He has been the esthetic worrier in the parliament in the recent past. He never promotes politics based on hatred. He believed only in democracy and unconditionally fought against terrorism in whatever form. His only weapon in politics was use of words, and even during fierce debates in the parliament, he was seen smiling with an open heart. We all have witnessed his organizing power and dedication as active minister. President Rajapaksa had enough faith to select Mr. Fernandopulle to sphere head “Maga Naguma” (developing the roads) programme and he was able to show results soon rather than late. It is only few weeks ago that Sri Lankan natio...

The popular BBC programme ‘Hard talk’ by zeinab Badawi on February 4, 2008 with Sri Lanka central bank governor Nivard Cabrall has not bee aired so far. Cabraal flew specially to London for the interview after BBC invited participation at the show at a senior level of government by somebody who’d take all questions. It is reported that Mr. Cabrall had not allowed interviewer Zeinab Badawi to shoot him down with rapid-fire questions and dominate the interview and by all events acquitted himself creditably in the context of the “hard talk”.We all Sri Lankans were waiting for nearly one month for this programme to be telecast which is said to be related with sixty years of independence from vey same country that is funding BBC. The post colonial mentality has made many Sri Lankans to think that Sri Lanka is too small country to live and meet their aspirations. However Arthur C Clarke was a British born and he emigrated to Sri Lanka in 1956, where he lived until his death. When he decided to settle in Sri Lanka he was already a world renowned person as a science fiction author, inventor, and futurist. His staying in this tiny Island never seem hindering his scientific research and writings.Arthur C Clarke is most renowned for his scientific predictions. He explored into the future with rational thinking and open mind. Ironically the desire to know the Predictions of life is part of way of life of most of Sri Lankans. Unfortunately it is checking the horoscope and zodiac signs, loo...

2008-03-25 05:43:52
There was a time that number of film directors was busy producing films to fulfill the demand of NGO funding and foreign awards rather than target towards the common people of the country. Most of the film festivals in the west were eager to see misery of people, tear drops, and reflection of the eastern society as a primitive one. The people like Asoka Handagama, Prasanna Withana and Satyangani were busy grabbing NGO funds and producing films to full fill the aspirations of their masters and grabbing few awards as a consolation for empty galleries in local theater. It is in this backdrop that Jayantha Chandrasiri immerged as a lotus in the mud.The greatest and the best of Jayantha Chandrasiri was seen on his last film ‘Gurilla Marketing’ which was ...

Where will terror money go now?
2008-03-25 05:43:14
The LTTE terrorist activities are now confined into Wanni jungle and they have hardly any access to military supply from the sea. Sri Lankan navy has destroyed all the tiger terrorist vessels that have been operated in Indian Ocean. The Sri Lanka Air Force MIG fighter jets frequently pound on sea tiger hide outs in the shore. The sea tigers that were once proud and elite unit of LTTE is now struggling even to launch a small boat in the water. Their last coward attempt to attack the navy was by shielding into Indian fishermen. This clearly shows the miserable state of LTTE sea tigers.Obviously, due to the recent debacles, LTTE has lost its sheen and therefore there will be a decline in the funds. Still there are couple of hundreds of people in western count...

The Uniqueness of Buddhist view of Anatta (Not-self/No-soul)
2008-03-25 05:42:41
Almost all main religions including Christianity, Islam and Hinduism are based on concept of self or soul. Buddhism stand unique that it is the only philosophy that not only clearly reject the concept of “self/soul” as a false view, but also consider this false view as a major cause of suffering of individuals as well as one of the root cause of problems in the society as whole. The vast majority of people still believe in ‘self’ or ‘soul’ and therefore, almost all the economic principles, political views and other social aspects molded by people who believe in this false concept carry the same falsity. Most of the current marketing, advertising and even management concepts are highly based on accepting the existence of ‘self’ or ‘soul’. ...

In weekly media briefing of UNP, Mr. Lakshman Kiriella made big buzz on governments plan to relocate part of STF troop from Ampara district to Welioya and Kabithigollawa area. UNP try to convey a point that this move is due to a demand from TMVP. We all know that in the recent past, TMVP has joined hand with the government forces in the fight against LTTE terrorists. Now LTTE is swept away from entire eastern province and only a handful of isolated LTTE carders are carrying coward hide and runaway attacks. Now the real battle front is in the Wanni jungle where SL security forces are gradually marching towards the den of LTTE terrorist leader Piripaharan. We all know that UNP under the leadership of Ranil Wickramasingha has chosen LTTE and its political wing TNA as their trusted political al...

End of an era in ancestral politics in Sri Lanka
2008-03-19 13:19:29
Death of Anura Bandaranayaka marked the end of ancestral politics by privileged families in Sri Lanka. Family politics is no stranger even in contemporary international politics. The famous Kenedy family once influenced USA politics and rather infamous Bush family has influenced both American and world politics today. Now we are witnessing Clinton family politics in USA in the form of husband to wife. However ancestral politics in Sri Lanka is different from that of western world. Western family politics is a result of monetary and political power earned by a family member oneself. However our political dynasties are direct result of colonization. As they established colonies through military might, the colonials consol...

This has been reported as an election with least amount of violence and closer to fifty percent of voters have cast their ballot to strengthen the democracy. This election sealed the defeat of LTTE terrorists in the Eastern province and created a new avenue to establish democracy.LTTE terrorists were against this election from the beginning and their partners of politics joined the boycott later. Sri Lankan culture has been evolved for over over two thousand years in harmony with our soil, climate and geographical realities. From time to time we were influenced by Indian sub continent. Some of the influences came in the form of friendly missions and there were occations that the influence was in the forms of invasions. However, Sri Lankas were able to buid independent culture and tradition with Sri Lankan identity.Being a tropical country with plenty of sunshine and rain, Sri Lanka naturally became an agricultural based country which is common to the Indian sub continent. Therefore, we were having plenty of grains, vegetables and fruts. When Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka, the agricultural tradtion was further strengthened. Both Hinuism an...

Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord and broken promises
2008-03-01 01:42:10
In 9 January 1984, couple of students started a peaceful demonstration in Jafna University. However, Piripaharan saw this type of peaceful demonstrations as a threat to the growth of his fascist terrorist organization. LTTE propagandists made use of the university student fast to din into the minds of the Tamil people the futility of non-violent protests. Therefore, he ordered his carders to abduct them and innocent Tamil girl Mathivathani was among them and she ended up in the custody of Piripaharan in a LTTE camp in South India. In Hindu society it is very difficult for a Hindu girl to face the society after being under the custody of a man. Therefore, up to the date she is still living with this terrorist leader as his official wife.On July 29, 1987, a similar incident occurred. However...

The war against terrorism has influenced the Sri Lankan society in many ways. We always talk the bad effects of war. Now we are at the very last stage of winning the war against terrorism and this is good time to contemplate and carry whatever good things that Sri Lankan nation got due to the war. It may be simple things or qualities, but still matter if taken in good faith.Due to terrorist threat to the Colombo harbor, the government declared the sea near the harbor as a banned zone for intruders including the fishermen. In south of the harbor, fishing has been prohibited even at the sea shore up to Kolpetty railway station. One of a positive effect of this has been the growth of fish in this area. The growth has been so evident that if one observes th...

With the disclosing of APRC proposals, there has been a buzz in the media about late president J.R Jayawardana. The APRC proposals have been based on 13 th amendments to the constitution which was resulted with the indo-lanka peace accord. The media in the south is trying hard to white wash the tarnished image of the late fox by trying to highlight that 13 th amendment as a genuine work of JR.The historical background of 13 th amendmentJ R Jayawardana won the general election in 1977 with more than 4/5 of majority in the parliament. However, this short sighted politician did not for see the growth of separatist terrorism in the North. Sreepathi sooriarachchi was known to be a politician in a fast track. February 9th marked the end of his political career and, ironically it was resulted due to the excessive speed of his own vehicle. There are different motivations for a person to enter into politics. It is very few those who enter into politics as a natural extend to their genuine social service. The bulk of the people enter into politics due to their political family background or others come with business motives. The latest trend is to be a friend or close to political leaders and enter into the politics using the excessive power of the leaders. As we all expected LTTE terrorists have unleashed the final round of terror in the Sri Lankan society. LTTE is no longer a strong military out fit with own rule, autonomy and territory rather it is now consisted of isolated and frustrated carders without any direction or vision. In the recent past, the LTTE terrorists have lost quite a number of their top ranked leaders ranging from those affiliated to military operations to intelligence. Recently, their Eastern province leader was killed not in the battle field or a terrorist hide out, but in a camp for displaced. This clearly shows the misery and disarray of terrorist in North and East. Just like a flame glitter more just before it is to be put out, isolated LTTE carders have intensified its terrorist activities. Defeated terrorists are ...

In the last week, we have witnessed a surge bomb blasting ranging from claymore mines, time bombs and suicide blastings. It is no longer arm force’s or government’s war on behalf of us (which we were made to think by media for long). In the last election, we clearly gave a mandate to the government to eradicate terrorism and as responsible people we can not let the responsibility solely on arm forces and government and relax. The terrorists are now attacking on the civilians (that is us!) and at least by now, we all as a society must wake up and actively work in fight against terrorism.Few years back it was LTTE separatist terrorists with a clear mission. The terrorism is fast becoming part of the history and now we are in the verge of winning the fight against terrorism. This is good time to analyze other factors that went wrong and start rectifying those so that we can start building our country. In the latter part of the colonial era, Sri Lanka never had a full scale people’s struggle for independence and the year 1948 marked the nominal completion of transition of colonial powers into the hands of their Sri Lankan agents. Since then government and people were two distinct and isolated entities, the politicians used to come in front of the people during the election periods and then its people’s turn to criticize the elected government until the next election. The politicians were having their own agenda while people were engaged in their own affaires and looking after their family well fair. It is in this backdrop that one of the old foxy politician shamelessly stated that ‘one should look after his own self defense’.Winning warAfter twenty five years o...

2008-02-03 09:47:02
In February 4th 1948, the British emperors officially handed over the administrative powers to the Sri Lankans. Since then we celebrate this day as our independence day. At the same time, some sections of the people absurdly question that what sort of development we have gained since this so called independence. In fact, indirectly they try to promote an impression that the good old white government would have been far better than the governments in post independence era.Historical backgroundWhen we were presented with independence in 1948, the costal areas had been under different colonial rules for about 450 years while the whole country has been under them for over 130 years. By that time, the colonial masters were able to create segments in the s...

Until 2006, there have been number of people ruling our country whereas it was one supreme self appointed leader in the enemy side in the North. The leaders in the south had many issues to tackle, but Piripaharan had one mission and it is to defend their Ealam territory by military means. When it comes to elections, people in the south were divided in different political ideologies and their focus was often diverted from the core burning issue of terrorism by those who strategically manipulating the media. The political front of Ealam seperatismOnce LTTE got hold the full control of North and Eastern provinces in the post Indo-Lanka peace accord era, LTTE had very little effort in military front. | 2008-01-25 04:32:11 |
The man is a cultural animal and culture and man has mutual influence for both. However, the western colonial invasions influenced this balance and in Sri Lanka, we are still seeing the post colonial effect of artificially created cultural segments and their desire to retain power against the will of the common people. The man required to change the environment in order satisfy his desires. In Indo-Aryan culture, people never became slave of their desires and therefore they respected the nature and never tried to over run it. In the contrary, the western people gradually became slaved on their desires and they wanted to overrun the nature. They even went on to change their religions to adapt this new philosophy. The development of technology became a meant ...

Time for People and legislature to unite with forces to fight against terrorism
2008-01-25 04:30:55
Sri Lankan legislature lost two of its law makers within one week. Firstly, it was UNP Colombo district parliamentarian T. Maheshwaran who was brutally killed in a Hindu temple. It was followed by road way side claymore explosion killing D.M. Dassanayaka who was the minister of nation building.
