this is not good news.he made true liberalism acceptable. as a consequence, he become the punching bag of the right. his raison d'etre? a five-sided blessing: labor, choice, speech, equality and progress.he doesn't shirk and he doesn't mince.this is what it means:...

dear cnn, abc, et al:i'm scratching my head trying to figure out how you can show news headlines like this and this. listen, i know you guys have to fill up airtime with wild speculations and endless, well, b.s., but stop. just stop.to summarize, west virginia is not indicative of the general electorate. it is not a bellwether. at least not one that matters. sorry. you can't spin this into "what? electability? ooh-nooos." he won utah, people. utah. also, here's some friendly advice: when you call the election "over" (see: last week) and knowingly admit that he's going to lose big in west virginia at the same time, you've pretty much shown all y'er cards. you know the outcome. stop trying to make it more dramatic than it is.ok?...

am home sick with a head cold and taking off from work and blog, so i got nothing. but, if you're so inclined, old people and politics always come off well. i take that back; old people singing about the good ol' days of dixie or talkin' about black helicopters and the problems with the "coloreds" = not so great. but for the rest, there's this....

inadequate? the problems are not limited to elections in "emerging" democracies. on the subject, read eric bjornlund's beyond free and fair: monitoring elections and building democracy for some compelling insight into the necessity of elections observation.on a personal, partisan and elections-related note, no. actually, not a chance in hell. the only reason i'm bringing it up is because i've been asked about it three times in the last month. why? here's why.* m. ward, radio campaign...

i've eased off the ledge. another 40 days. i can deal with it.to your right, i'd like to introduce the latest incarnation of dj indian jay. if ya'll feel like hearing things i'm listening to right now, feel free. or not. your choice. honestly. this week's selection is a bit morose. more variety next week. two things:irreverence, with words: i laughed. a lot. outloud. funny post.smacked foreheads awareness day: this, on the other hand, is insipid. the author, anatole kaletsky, has managed to base an entire editorial on an ill-informed and purposely narrow poll interpretation. see if you can spot the stupid in this choice quote (emphasis mine): That Mrs Clinton will now carry on with her campaign is not just probable but essential. For the voting in Pennsylvania confirms that she has a much ...

is the pennsylvania primary less exciting to me because of the likely outcome? prob. but just interesting enough. what's running through the weasel's head, you ask?the polls have her leading within the margin of error. the best thing to come outta today is a less than 6-point finish for hillz. anything more, and she'll get her stamp of approval for another month (or, gasp, two.) but, if obam's able to pull this off with the undecideds, its game over: superdelegates flock and what little is left of her cash flow momentum is gone.not that its mathematically possible for her to catch up anyhow. for a more scientific (or not) take, see below:...

2008-04-16 23:20:00
i haven't posted for over a year, and until a few hours ago, thought i might be done with the weasel for good. alas, internal dialogues sometimes need written exposure. here's the sad part. despite all that has happened in the past twelve months, all it took was an absolute train-wreck to wake me out of my stupor. the culprit? the abcnews democratic debate.honestly. what were they thinking? i didn't have much of an opinion on gibson before this, but he's managed to change that. the kicker? stephanopoulos. the washington post commentary described him as an "...overly ambitious intern helping out at a subcommittee hearing." that's being generous. he came across as glib, uninformed and unfinished. in short, like he was reading off of michelle malkin's cue-cards.but don't take it from me...th...

"out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars." --- kahlil gibrani don't understand what happened yesterday. no idea. no clue. trying to make sense of it won't help. here's to hope for all those coping with senseless tragedy; in virginia, iraq, sudan and beyond.ps. i forgot about this blog. to be honest, i didn't think about it until reflecting on the horrific event at virginia tech. then i realized that i tended to post the most when i wanted to vent about politics, currents, something, anything. i'm not making any more promises to myself about how often i'll post. i'll try to be regular. at the very least, it's self-inflicted therapy.* hope dies last, studs terkel (currently reading this brilliant compilation.)...

everything old is new again: having just watched, "can mr. smith get to washington anymore?", i find myself relapsing into political junkie-dom. it's difficult to avoid - as the highs are as stupefying as the lows. this year, we have political mudslinging at its best (read: worst.) evidenced by recent polls, incumbents are going 'round the bend - coming up with something, anything, to save their seats. and the tactics are changing:"usually, politicians drop their most damaging 'opposition research' without fingerprints, leaking it to a reporter or airing it through a third party. [rep] northup, by contrast, hurled her charge like an anvil through glass."want to help yarmuth pull ahead? go here. want to help northup retain her seat? read this....

2006-09-19 21:29:00
ya'll heard the one about the coup in thailand? i couldn't help but snicker at comments attributed to gen. sondhi: "it was a textbook coup carried out with military precision. not a shot fired, tv and radio stations seized, and all when the prime minister was out of the country. the army commander who took over the reins of government in thailand even thanked the public for their co-operation and apologised for any inconvenience."he thanked the public. and apologized for any inconvenience. i can't take it seriously because it sounds like something out of the hitchhiker's guide....

impending progress in the district.
2006-09-14 22:08:00
photo from washingtonpost.com adrian m. fenty done and won it. i made it to the victory celebration, and managed to convince voch me ban to join in. there's plenty of "what now?" ahead of his eventual win in november - some justified, some not. look, if we can elect a several-times-over failed businessman to the texas governorship and the u.s. presidency, we can take a shot at a hard-working, energetic, successful and committed dc councilmember for mayor. one more reason? the guy's serious about the rights of district residents. let's hold his feet to the fire when he's elected to make sure this happens.fyi: you might be able to detect a certain swarthy bearded male within the fenty victory crowd on the front page of wednesday's washington post. yea...

oy, been a few days. sorry. a few macaca-inspired, soybean flavored links for the week:i. macaca-inspired nonsense: yesterday, i asked somebody from virginia if they’d be voting for allen (given his penchant for outright stupidity and/or bigotry.) she said yes. i wish there was a punchline. ii. macaca-inspired presidential nonsense: the president decides to fundraise for allen. plans on getting there by motorcade. in the middle of rush-hour. secret service requests an h.o.v. lane shutdown from 1-7pm. virginia declines. iii. macaca-inspired politician not named allen: burns. conrad burns. iv. macaca 24/7: they're all over the place.v. macaca-inspired macaca shirts: before they (and future macaca-inspirations) run out. vi. macaca-inspired serious commentary: please read. *elliott smith, j...

ok. there are apparently mosquitos in dc that have tested positive for the west nile virus. having grown up most of my life in florida, this is pretty much a nonstory - i've seen mosquitos the size of two-seater cessnas. what does dr. gregg a. pane, director of dc's department of health have to offer as words of advice? don't get bitten. literally. his remarks: "residents are asked to guard themselves against mosquito bites," pane said. "everyone must fight the bite and keep in mind that protection and prevention are the keys to reducing human risk."aside from not going outside until december and just short of a bio-dome over the district, what exactly does dr. pane want us to do?...

happy august folks, it's friggin' hot outside. weather said 90-something, feels about 20 degrees above. work and everything in between is going well. a few things:1. now that i'm getting into some sorta schedule, i'm trying to allot a bit more time to my trafficking article and related side-projects. the problem of course, is that every time i delve into more research, it takes me down a few unexplored avenues, and well, increases my workload. best to be thorough, i suppose. if you're in the dc area and would like to get involved with the effort, the dc anti-trafficking meetup group could always use more participants/volunteers.2. my friends katherine and moses started a wonderful organization called the tumaini foundation a short while ago. its an ngo charged with enriching and empowering...

i've been accused of being too serious on this here blog (and in life, but you try living and working within a one-mile radius of dick cheney's digs and the white house and not have a neurotic, quizzical demeanor.) in light of said accusations, a few random blog posts that make me laugh. for now.1) dropping the, umm, weapons: from wonkette, a post and picture create the perfect metaphor for the bush administration.2) toils, troubles and cars: a story from love & haterade that reminds me of the time i had to explain how i got a speeding ticket going up 95 in a ryder truck (as a result, i do not trust the lower of the carolinas.) voch me ban was an accomplice and can vouch for me. 3) citing sightings: circle v has a perfect guide to hipster spotting in dc. funny, really funny....

i was going to post a lengthy diatribe about president bush's first veto (does he get a cake for that?), but i'm leavin' it to something more immediate:who else is affected by the israel/hezbollah/lebanon/ad infinitum clash? according to sepia mutiny, over 86,000 sri lankans, who already work in low-wage maid and service positions, are stranded in lebanon. citing the middle east research and information project, it reported that the sri lankan women (whom i'm considering victims of human trafficking,) are already "...struggling to repay large loans taken out for migration expenses...it is estimated that 20 percent of the 80,000 sri lankan migrant workers living in lebanon experience some form of maltreatment, ranging from non-payment of wages to verbal, physical and sexual abuse." this i...

three fall:1) cycles in somalia: islamists defeat (possibly u.s. financed) warlords, take mogadishu. sad as it is, neither victor would have ensured stability. but now we have to worry about somalia being subject to the second coming of the taliban.2) dog and pony show '06: president bush attempts to re-energize base (fears, phobias, etc.)3) looking for a stop sign: the state department's 2006 trafficking in persons report came out on monday. apparent progress but not enough. the world cup will likely end up contributing to the bulk of the '07 report....

2006-06-04 20:47:00
today marked the 17th anniversary of the tiananmen square crackdown on pro-democracy activists. the chinese government celebrated, as they contend that their efforts to stop the movement "...preserved social stability and paved the way for economic growth." everybody should be profoundly disturbed by this statement. the state department urged china to reconsider their revisionist telling. rightly so, but have we really done enough to support the democratic movement? even if engagement with the chinese government is the best means to cultivating democracy, it speaks volumes to have major u.s. tech companies like google, yahoo and microsoft engage in transactions with the chinese that ultimately discourage free speech and promote censorship. in fact, yahoo's cooperation with the chinese gove...

hello? hi. yes, i've been a fairly inconsistent blogger as of late. on the other hand, it seems my two loyal readers have done pretty well carrying on a conversation by themselves. and despite the snide, ahem, comments, i think i can take over from here. would i be forgiven if i promise at least three posts a week? i suppose you're not going to believe me anyhow, so i guess i'll have to earn back my miniscule readership and your trust. so, a couple of issues to get this thing rolling again. a few domestic points, i'll do international tomorrow (nothing's happened in the world over the past couple months anyhow, right?)1. hanging chads: everything you've ever wanted to know about katherine harris and her 'going nowhere fast' race to the, ummm, senate. is it too early to swear in senator nel...
