Google Impacts Charleston's Economy
2007-07-24 21:49:00
Google having an immediate economic impact
Construction of Google’s data center on a 520-acre site in the Mt. Holly Commerce Park has created hundreds of jobs and business opportunities for the region.
In the three months since Google formally announced its plans, a total of 27 businesses have brought crews on site, employing more than 300 local individuals. Ten companies have hired an additional 17 subcontractors to assist with the construction, Google said in a written statement."
In addition to construction jobs, dozens of suppliers, food and beverage businesses and rental companies are needed to satisfy the work force. As a result, nearly 170 additional local businesses are receiving boosts in sales.
“This project is already making a difference in the lives of hundreds of Berkeley County residents and I’m confident over time, every person in this community will be positively impacted,” Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis said. “We’re proud ...

Charleston debate breaking new ground
CHARLESTON -- It's likely the biggest thing to come to The Citadel’s McAlister Field House since air conditioning was installed in the fabled gymnasium in the mid-1990s.
Tonight the eight Democratic candidates for president will converge on the campus off Moultrie Street for what one CNN executive described as the Internet's "first seat at the table in terms of determining who the next president of the United States might be.”
In all, some 2,700 tickets have been distributed for tonight's debate, the live broadcast of which begins at 7 p.m. That's more than three times as many as were distributed for the Democratic debate three months ago at S.C. State University in Orangeburg.
As has been highly publicized, rather than simply answer questions posed by moderator Anderson Cooper, the candidates will respond to questions submitted by video via YouTube.
By Sunday nearly 2,000 videos were submitted. Of those, only about 30 w...

South Carolina Gas Prices are Lowest across U.S.
2007-07-17 17:45:00
Report: S.C. Prices">gas prices are lowest across U.S. State average cost: $2.83, says AAA
South Carolinians may complain about paying an arm and a leg to fill up their gas tanks, but they can find comfort in a AAA survey released Monday that shows the state has the cheapest gas in the country.
A gallon of regular gas in South Carolina averaged $2.83 on Monday, according to AAA's gas-tracking Web site www.fuelgaugereport.com. That's down .004 cents from Sunday and below the average U.S. price of $3.05 a gallon, which also dropped .004 cents from Sunday.
North Carolina has the twelfth-lowest gas price, at an average $2.95 per gallon.
The most expensive regular gas can be found in Nebraska at $3.33 a gallon.
Prices spiked in the last couple weeks because of outages at several U.S. oil refineries, but "it's starting to dribble down again," AAA Carolinas spokesman Tom Crosby said Monday.
Drivers on the Grand Strand are still paying the highest cost for gas in the cheapest state. The M...

Charleston among Top 10 retail markets
Charleston has been named among the top 10 retail investment markets in the country by one of the nation’s largest commercial real estate brokerage firms.
Sperry Van Ness , based in Irvine, Calif., has just released the retail edition of its 2007 Top 10 Markets To Watch Report, which examines economic factors that impact future retail investment real estate. In its report, Sperry Van Ness cites the top 10 markets to watch as:
Albuquerque, N.M.
Charleston
Dallas/Fort Worth
Houston
Las Vegas
Phoenix
Raleigh/Durham, N.C.
Salt Lake City
Tucson, Ariz.
West Palm Beach, Fla.
Charleston was chosen largely because of the area’s 5.36% increase in household income and 1.63% increase in population in 2007, the company reported. In addition, retail vacancy rates in the Charleston area are tight, at about 8.9%, which is expected to keep rents rising. Rents in the area increased 3.2% during 2...

Ethanol plant eyes tri-county, county officals skeptical
A number of ethanol companies have been coming to Charleston proposing plants; more than a dozen have “kicked the tires” in Berkeley County in the last year, said Al Kennedy, project manager for Berkeley County Economic Development.
The newest prospect in the Lowcountry is International Bio Energy Virginia LLC.
“They’ve told us (they are looking at Charleston),” said Warren Harris, economic development director for Chesapeake, Va. Harris and his colleagues in Chesapeake have worked feverishly to land the plant in their region. “I’m trying for them not to go to Charleston.”
International Bio Energy is a Switzerland-based corporation with its U.S. headquarters in Virginia. Currently, the corporation is working on three separate sites to launch ethanol plants; one of which in the United States. The other two will be located in Hungary and Germany. Eventually, the company plans to have ...

Dining Out Review: Granville's
2007-06-19 15:48:00
Dining out at Granville's
Last night, My Husband and I joined friends at Granville's on Rutledge Avenue just outside Wagener Terrace. While we waited at the bar and perused the wine list, the staff recommended dishes and drinks from the varried menu. I decided on a Chinin Blanc while Whit enjoyed a Victory Golden Monkey (high gravity beer).
We dined outside and other than the flies (ceiling fans are needed on the patio) the evening was quite lovely. Both couples chose a variety of small plates, appetizers and salads to share. The Asian braised Short Ribs were the crowd favorite and suggested by the entire staff. Slow cooked, falling off the bone, smothered in an amazing sauce and just enough for 2. Next time I'm sure we will split the dinner portion.
The Mussels were also great. The sauce was a red curry, coconut milk combo with just enough spice. We also enjoyed a Maple Leaf Duck Breast over greens and still had room for des...

Mount Pleasant, SC - No Smoking BAN Passes
2007-06-14 02:23:00
Smoking ban passes in Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant joined the league of nine municipalities across the state banning smoking in workplaces at Tuesday night's monthly town council meeting. Town council voted 7-2 in favor of the ban.
Within the tri-county, Mount Pleasant, Charleston and Sullivan's Island all have indoor smoking bans, including restaurants and bars. Sullivan's Island was the first area municipalities to enact the ban last July. Charleston's ban will become effective July 23, and Mount Pleasant's will become effective Sept. 1.
Earlier this year, the Mount Pleasant Town Council decided to delay decision on the ordinance because many of the municipalities with smoking bans have faced lawsuits. However, when the state Legislature failed to enact a statewide smoking ban, many members of the council felt inclined to protect their citizens from the dangers of smoking, said Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, town councilwoman
"I think it was the best thing to do," she ...

St. Johns Yacht Harbor will have about 400 boat slips, a waterfront pool and Jacuzzi, and a snack bar with facilities for cooking fresh caught fish, among other amenities. A Captain’s Retreat will be perched above the marina and fuel dock, where boaters will have Internet access, television, gaming tables and satellite weather and navigational equipment for charting courses.
The community also plans a cluster of townhomes, which will be located on the north end of the property, formerly Buzzard&rsqu...

Charles Towne opens entrance for cyclists, walkers
Bicyclists and dog-walkers now have their own entrance to Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. A bicycle rack and safe pet tie-off stand is provided at the new entrance so visitors can go into the center to pay the daily admission fee or use their Park Passport, the $50 annual pass that provides admission to all 47 of South Carolina’s state parks. Most of the 664-acre park on the Ashley River across from downtown Charleston is available to bicyclists and pets. However, the Animal Forest is off limits to both, and bikes are not allowed on the interpretive history walking trail. Charleston County announces evacuation pick-up points
Hoping to avoid a Lowcountry replay of the scores of stranded citizens seen in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Charleston County and municipal officials this morning announced the designation of 75 evacuation pick-up points for residents who don’t have transportation in the event of a mandatory evacuation. Blue signs that state “Hurricane Evacuation Bus Stop” will be posted throughout the county beginning this week, at all 75 pick-up point locations. The move by Charleston County’s Emergency Preparedness Division represents an enhancement of its longstanding policy to provide emergency transportation from designated pick-up points, and is an acknowledgement of the region’s rapid growth in recent years. As a result of the patterns of that growth, some previous pick-up locations have been changed. “The goal is for residents who don’t have transportation to identify these pick-up points pr...

Democrats to Hold Presidential Debate in Charleston in July
CHARLESTON -- Haven’t caught presidential debate fever yet?
You’ll get your chance this summer when Charleston hosts a nationally televised debate among the Democratic candidates vying for the White House. The sparing session is scheduled for July 23 and will be broadcast live on CNN.
The debate, which is being cosponsored by the region’s newest major corporate citizen, Google, is the first such event being held in the port city in modern memory. It will also be the first debate to be hosted on Google’s YouTube.
On Tuesday, Columbia played host to a Fox News debate featuring the Republican candidates for president, and two weeks ago, the full Democratic field came together for their first-in-the-South debate in Orangeburg.
Although a venue has yet to be chosen for the event, political insiders said Tuesday morning, they believe the most likely location is the Galliard Municipal Auditorium.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens - Charleston, SC
2007-05-05 16:17:00
My Trip to Magnolia Plantation:
Last week a good friend of mine had family in town from Virginia. Among the must see sights in Charleston, Magnolia Plantation was on the agenda. I, being a resident of Charleston, had never been to "one of the Top 25 Most Visited Houses in America" before and I jumped at the chance to accompany them.
We arrived on a beautiful morning to a friendly staff and reasonable admission rates. Parking was free and not terribly difficult. The 3 guided tour options were Nature Boat Ride, Magnolia Plantation House and Nature Train. We opted for the first two and skipped the train to take a walk in The Audubon Swamp Garden.
The Boat tour was very comfortable. The open pontoon boat glided along the canals and we were given a concise but not riveting description of the history of the 150 acre rice field. During the hour long tour we saw many different species of birds and a few alligators! It was very en...

2007-05-03 16:44:00
MeadWestvaco proposal would blend development, conservation
MeadWestvaco wants a national park-sized area of forests near Charleston developed into what it calls an environmentally friendly community.
MeadWestvaco executives said they want to provide a model development in the 72,000-acre area, east of the Edisto River, that combats sprawl in the booming Charleston area.
Some of the land would be developed. Other parts — the size now unknown — would be preserved. The idea is to cluster new homes, schools, shops and other amenities together.
The company didn’t say how much of its remaining 320,000 S.C. acres would be sold, developed or preserved. However, it said some of that land would be sold over the coming decades.
What happens to the 72,000-acre tract is important because of its size — three times bigger than Congaree National Park in Lower Richland — and its location near the rapidly growing coast. The area is a buffer between Charleston and the accla...

Homeowners' Insurance Legislation
The House LCI Subcommittee on Insurance gave a favorable report on Thursday to H. 3820, the Omnibus Coastal Property Insurance Reform Act of 2007. The bill contains provisions that would: create catastrophe savings accounts, force insurers to give mitigation credits, establish incentives for insurance companies to write additional policies in the wind and hail pool zone, clarify the practices and procedures of the Wind and Hail Underwriting Association, establish a mitigation grant program, expand the cancellation notice period to 60 days, and force insurers to reveal catastrophe models used to the Department of Insurance. Working with the Department of Insurance and the Subcommittee members, SCAR was able to successfully amend several sections of this legislation to make it more meaningful to more homeowners. The bill now moves to the full LCI Committee for consideration next week, and SCAR will continue to work to make insurance reform a reality.
