When is the best time of year to lay turf?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
You can lay Medallion(REG) turf all year round, however it is best to avoid laying turf in frosty conditions. During extended periods of hot and dry weather additional care and attention will be required....

How should I remove toadstools from my turf?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
When conditions are right for them toadstools may appear in any lawn whether long established or recently laid. Generally they are harmless but they should not be eaten. Remove by picking them off (wear gloves), however if they are too numerous they can be mown off with a box on the lawn mower in order to collect them. Following a good mowing regime should help reduce the frequency of appearance of toadstools. Also a sharp frost tends to reduce a toadstool population. During the winter my lawn has become sparse and died back, resulting in bare patches. What should I do?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
During autumn, turf will start to go into its winter condition. This means that generally a lawn will begin to look paler in colour. As temperatures drop further going into winter, lawns will not appear as dense or healthy. In the colder months, which also have reduced daylight, grass growth virtually stops. As a result no nutrients are being absorbed by the grass plants and photosynthesis activity levels are extremely low. During this time when your lawn is vulnerable, it may suffer from a range of conditions, including Fusarium Patch Disease, high worm activity, chafer grub development, or Red Thread. All of these conditions, and others not listed, occur naturally and they will lead to patchiness within a lawn, the extent of which is dependent on the extent of the conditions. As the grass plants are virtually dormant during winter, recovery will not be seen until well into the next spring growing season. Rolawn Medallion(REG) turf is sown with the finest cultivars available. This gi...

My lawn needs feeding and overseeding. Which should I do first?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
If your lawn has not been fed in the last 4 - 6 months then you should feed it 3 or 4 days before over seeding. For best results spike the lawn first with a fork, down to the depth of the fork tines, every 300mm (1 foot). This will help get the lawn food into the soil where it can be absorbed by the lawns roots. If you have fed your lawn more recently then spike the lawn with a fork and over seed. You should plan to then feed the lawn within the next 4 - 8 weeks....

My lawn is covered in worm casts. Is there anything I can do?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Worms are beneficial in the garden as their burrowing activities improve the aeration and drainage of the soil and improve the nutrient content by digesting leaves and other organic matter and passing this into the soil. However in spring and autumn when the soil is warm and moist worm activity can ruin the appearance of a lawn by depositing muddy worm casts across the lawns surface. To limit the damage caused by worm casts avoid smearing them into the lawns surface by avoiding mowing or walking on the lawn when wet. Wait for the casts to dry out and then brush them away using a stiff brush. Another option is to deter worms by reducing the amount of food available for them. Remove grass clippings and leaf litter and scarify regularly (NB New turf should not be scarified in the first 12 months.). Earthworms also appear to dislike soils which have a high sand content, probably due to the lower moisture content and abrasiveness of the sand particle. Applying top dressing with a high san...

My dog is urinating on my lawn and it is discolouring the grass, what can I do to stop this and how can I repair the damage?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The only true way to prevent this is to train the dog to urinate somewhere else. The chemicals in animal urine (dog, fox, badger) will change the appearance of a lawn. If the event is witnessed then the area concerned can be washed down with plenty of plain water; diluting the chemicals to prevent any major damage. A poorly fed lawn will show urination spots as lush, dark green, quick growing patches. In a well fed lawn the animal urine will cause brown patches where the turf looks dead and perhaps a dark green surrounding edge. If you have lush, dark green patches these need to be systematically mown down to the height of the rest of the lawn; and the lawn needs to be given a high quality feed. Brown patches need to be rake...

Is Rolawn turf suitable for shady areas?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Turf grass plants, as a group, are not well adapted to shade, although some have a greater tolerance than others. Understanding the theory of how shade impacts on turf will help you manage the shade within your garden. Where possible we recommend removing the cause of the shade by trimming back trees and foliage. Rolawn Medallion(REG) Turf is particularly dynamic and adaptable with a balanced cultivar mix. Consequently it is ideal for a wide variety of applications from sports pitches to show gardens at the RHS Chelsea flower show. It is sown with 55% fine fescue cultivars that are known to perform well in shade. Rolawn Minster Pro(TM) Ornamental Turf is sown using 100% fine fescue cultivars which will perform well in shade and drought conditions within a luxury formal garden. How do I overseed my lawn?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
How to over seed your lawn: Mow the lawn to approx 25mm.(1") Use a spring tine rake to break up and remove the layer of dead matted grass known as thatch. Dependent on the depth of thatch on a lawn this process (scarification) may require a powered scarifier, which can be hired from most hire shops. Using a garden fork, spike the lawn to a depth of approx. 150mm (6") at 300mm (12") intervals. If the lawn has not been fed in the last 4 months, apply Rolawn Spring or Autumn Lawn Food, depending on the time of year, 4 or 5 days before sowing Sow the seed evenly across the lawn. Medallion(REG) Premium Lawn Seed should be applied at a rate of 25g per square metre. Minster Pro(TM) Ornamental Lawn Seed should be applied at a rate of 28g per square metre. Rolawn Lawn Seed can be mixed with Rolawn Lawn Top Dressing and applied to the lawn jointly. The seeded area must be kept moist, therefore, water your lawn after 2 or 3 days of sowing if no rain has fallen. Specific bare patches can be sown w...

How soon after laying turf can I apply Rolawn Lawn Food?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
If GroRight Lawn Establishment Fertiliser was applied before laying turf then you should wait 2 to 4 months before applying a lawn food, dependent on the weather, growing conditions and appearance of the lawn. If GroRight was not applied prior to laying, Rolawn Lawn Food can be applied once the roots have established to a reasonable depth ie. 75mm (3") - 100mm (4"). This will depend on growing conditions and the time of year. In spring it may be only 2 or 3 weeks, at other times of the year 6 to 8 weeks. Care should be taken if applying lawn food within 6 weeks of laying turf as correct root development is essential for a healthy lawn. Excessive fertiliser applied to the lawn surface can encourage roots to remain near the surface and not grow down to the correct depth....

My lawn has developed patches of white cotton-wool or cobweb-like mould?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
At certain times of year, when the weather conditions are suitable, lawns and other turfed areas can develop patches of white mould, resulting in yellow-brown areas of grass. These white spores are caused by a common turf disease called Fusarium patch disease. Fusarium patch disease usually appears in autumn when the weather is relatively mild and humid, but can appear at other times of the year when conditions are suitable. A change in weather conditions, ie a sharp frost, will check the disease without the need to apply a fungicide. Fusarium does not kill the grass plants and brown patches will gradually fill in once the disease has ceased to be active, however signs of recovery may not be apparent until well into the growing season. Click here for further information about how to deal with Fusarium patch disease....

How do I grow a lawn from seed and when is the best time to do this?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The best time of year for seeding is spring and autumn depending on the weather conditions and temperature. Instructions for sowing a lawn: Dig over area to a depth of 15-22 cm (6 - 9"), removing all weeds and large stones Firm and level area. For the best possible results use Rolawn's Blended Loam(TM) (high quality topsoil) as a seed bed when sowing Medallion(REG) Premium lawn seed and Minster Pro(TM) Topsoil when sowing Minster Pro(TM) lawn seed. It is an ideal way to enhance poor soil and give the seeds the ideal environment in which to germinate and to develop into strong healthy plants. Blended Loam(TM) and Minster Pro(TM) Topsoil are also both excellent for producing a level seed bed, essential for a quality lawn. After digging always apply Rolawn GroRight lawn establishment fertilizer to the soil to give your lawn seed the best possible start. Apply seed evenly over the area at a rate of approximately 35 grams per square metre. It is better to apply the seed in a number of p...

How do I improve the soil in my garden?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Clay or sandy soil can be improved by adding organic matter to improve the soil structure. Rolawn Soil Improver is a natural soil improver/conditioner combining shredded straw compost with iron minerals. It is an ideal peat free source of organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility. Soil Improver can be applied anytime, but if it is to be dug in, care must be taken to avoid digging/forking wet soil, as it may damage the soil structure. Rates of application will vary, depending on the type of soil you have and the existing organic content etc. As a guide, typical application rates for digging into soils with low levels of organic matter, are as follows: Heavy clay soil - a layer, 75mm deep, should be incorporated to a depth of 200mm Light sandy soil - a layer, 30mm deep, should be incorporated to a depth of 200mm, Dig over the area to be improved, taking care not to disturb existing plants or their roots. Spread the soil improver over the area to the required depth and...

How much soil do I need to lay my turf onto?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
We recommend a minimum depth of 100mm (4"), ideally 150mm (6") of good quality topsoil. It is important to dig over or rotovate the soil to break up compaction as a well prepared soil will encourage deep, rapid rooting of your new turf. If you need to improve the existing soil, Rolawn Blended Loam(TM) is ideal and also helps create a level surface to lay your turf onto....

How do I calculate the amount of turf required for a circular lawn?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
To calculate the area of a circular lawn, measure the diameter of the lawn and then divide by 2 to find the radius. Multiply the radius by itself and then multiply this by 3.14. Eg if the lawn has a diameter of 10m, the radius is 5. 5 x 5 x 3.14 = 78.5m2 which equates to 79 rolls of Rolawn turf. We recommend you add 5% for shaping and wastage....
