City controller takes an opposing position on real estate tax reassessment
2008-06-25 17:53:00
Brett Mandel of the grass roots organization Philadelphia Forward has continued his fight for Estate">real estate taxation in the city. But could any move toward reassessment signal the end of the real estate upswing in Philadelphia?Alan Butkovitz certainly has that opinion. The City Controller stated his case against Mandel and Philadelphia Forward."In physics they say that the mere fact of observing things changes it," Butkovitz said. "Values are increasing, and people are building again in the city. What Mandel is pushing is a policy that goes against what is working."The decline of neighborhoods that are currently on the upswing is the primary reason for Butkovitz's continued fight against

The answer: Any homeowner who's saddled with high property taxes.

Philadelphia's real estate market improving
2008-03-10 04:04:00
The local Estate">real estate market is starting to loosen a bit. Showings in some neighborhoods are up substantially this year, agents report, after being down almost 50 percent between August and the end of 2007.Driving the upsurge in traffic, at least in part, are prospective first-time homeowners, who - in the first true buyers' market of the 21st century - don't have to worry about selling a house."On Monday, we received a two-page list of showings," said Kathy Conway, an agent with Prudential Fox & Roach in Center City. | So far Philly has avoided the worst of the housing crisis |
2008-02-16 12:01:00
“There’s a crisis nationwide, but I actually read something that said talking about a national real estate market is like giving the national temperature,†says Holly Mack-Ward, a Coldwell Banker Preferred realtor. “It varies from area to area. Philly, throughout history, has been relatively flat. It tends not to go as low or high, and that’s been the case here.†She goes so far as to say the market up to about the $500,000 range remains strong. She does, though, point out that Philly’s high-end real estate market has suffered a little—but not necessarily as much as have similar markets in other U.S. cities.
