August Was A Great Month
2008-08-30 18:57:00
We had a great month in August, and God did some wonderful things. We praise Him for opening some wonderful opportunities to share Christ in 3 schools in Sao Paulo and for the chance to preach in Primeira Igreja Batista Central in Sao Bernardo. Nearly 2600 people accepted Christ in August, including 48 teachers and 1 school coordenator. The Lord Jesus gets all of the glory and honor, for truly without Him we are able to do nothing. Here is a slide show of our visits in the 3 schools:

The Works Of The Lord
2008-08-27 13:24:00
"Come and see the works of the Lord... Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth."- Psalm 46:8-10God is the Living God, and He is mightily at work in the world today. He is mightily at work, touching many hearts and lives, and pursuing a personal relationship with all people. He is the same now as He was in the days when He did miraculous works in the Bible. Nothing is too hard for Him and nothing is impossible for the Living God. He has total power and authority over our spiritual enemy and over all things (see Luke 10:19 and Matthew 2818). So why are there many people who do not see and experience the God of miracles, the Almighty and All-Powerful Living God ?There are many reasons (sin, rebellion,...

Yesterday we had a great time with our friends Eduardo & Flavia, and their 2 boys Gabriel and Leonardo. We had a great lunch with 2 types of lasagna, then Gabriel beat me in a game of soccer on his Playstation 2, and then they took us to Morumbi Stadium, home of the Sao Paulo Futebol (soccer) Club, for a close-up tour. | Our Anniversary |
2008-08-17 18:36:00
Nancy and I celebrated our 26th anniversary the other night by going to Vivano Grill in Sao Caetano, which is a Brazilian "churrascaria" (steak house). You start with a buffet of starter foods and appetizers, and then comes the "churrasco" ... tons of different kinds of steaks and meats that they bring to your table in a never ending procession. They serve about 15 different types, and it is absolutely great.

It's The Relationship
2008-08-13 09:48:00
"We tend to say that because a person has natural ability, he will make a good Christian. It is not a matter of our equipment, but a matter of our poverty; not of what we bring with us, but of what God puts into us; not a matter of natural virtues, of strength of character, of knowledge, or of experience— all of that is of no avail in this concern... The most important aspect of Christianity is not the work we do, but the relationship we maintain and the surrounding influence and qualities produced by that relationship. That is all God asks us to give our attention to, and it is the one thing that is continually under attack." - Oswald ChambersWhat would you say is the single most important requirement to being a fruitful and victorious follow...

A Great School Visit
2008-08-08 18:21:00
This week we spoke in a school in the Sao Joao Climaco area of Sao Paulo, and we had a great time of sharing Christ and interacting with the students and teachers. We spoke in 42 classes in 3 days, and we need to return next week to speak in 4 more of the night classes. This school has 5th to 8th graders in the morning, 1st to 4th graders in the afternoon, and high school at night. God greatly blessed our visits, and 1305 students and 18 teachers and the school coordenator accepted Christ. | The Hand Of The Lord - Part 2 |
2008-08-05 14:42:00
Dwight L. Moody was considered the most influential evangelist of the 19th century, and was founder of the Moody Bible Institue. God used him in great ways, and reached many for Christ through him. Yet he was an uneducated, ordinary person who sold shoes for a living when he was young. No one would have predicted that he would become a man greatly used by God. Here are some things that were said about him soon after he became a Christian in 1855:"I can truly say, and in saying it I magnify the infinite grace of God as bestowed upon him, that I have seen few persons whose minds were spiritually darker than was his when he came into my Sunday School class; and I think that the committee of the Mount Vernon Church seldom met an applicant for membership more unlikely ever to become a Christian...

The Hand Of The Lord
2008-08-02 15:53:00
Acts 11:21 - "The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord."The early church in the book of Acts saw God do great and amazing things. Many people were reached for Christ, and the church grew quickly. What was the key to their victories and success ? Acts 11:21 shows the one thing that is absolutely vital to experiencing spiritual victories and to being fruitful in ministry - the hand of the Lord. The hand of the Lord represents God's glory and power, His presence, His blessings, His favor, and His authority over the enemy. Why was the hand of the Lord with them ? Go back to Acts chapter 8 and you find the answer. Acts 8:1 tells us that a great persecution broke out against the church, and everyone in the chu...

Here We Go Again
2008-07-31 13:12:00
Now that it is almost August, we are getting ready for many new opportunities to share Christ. In August we will be speaking in 3 schools, and I will be preaching in a church on Aug. 24. In September we have 3 more schools to speak in, a People Sharing Jesus seminar in a church in Sao Bernardo, and an all day outreach event in Diadema with a church to share Christ in homes and at a special service at night. In the next 2 months we will share Christ with between 6000 and 6500 people in the schools, and overall we will be sharing with over 7000 people. Let's pray that God will touch and save "immeasurably more" than all we ask & imagine, according to His power working through us, for His glory. Thanks for your prayers. We really appreciate and need them.

2008-07-27 16:26:00
The other city we visited on our trip in July was Serra Negra, located in the mountains near the border between the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. Serra Negra is a beautiful tourist city with many hotels, restaurants, parks, and shopping, and is known as the "City of Health" because of it's natural mineral water springs. Here are some photos of Serra Negra.

Last week Nancy and I took a 3 day trip to a couple of cities in the "interior" (country) of Sao Paulo state. One of the cities was Holambra, which is an interesting city founded by immigrants from Holland after World War II. The buildings have a Dutch architectural style, and the people are very friendly. Holambra is well known for being the largst flower producing area in Brazil and South America, and there are many flower farms and nurseries in the area. Here is a slide show of our trip:

Hearing God's Voice
2008-07-20 11:52:00
When I am not preaching in a church or when we do not have a seminar to do on a Sunday, we normally go to Igreja Batista Boas Novas (Good News Baptist Church) in Sao Paulo. Today Pastor Wagner preached a sermon on how we need to hear God's voice when we are attending church. Yes we are there to worship the Lord, but we also need to hear His voice. He is always trying to speak to us.This is a very important point that some Christians are missing. To reverently listen and to hear God's voice is worship, and if we are not hearing God's voice then we are missing the point. The same is true of our prayer time or "quiet time" with the Lord - hearing God's voice is the most important part. Although Pastor Wagner did not use this...

Bureaucracy In Brazil
2008-07-18 12:58:00
We are in the process of renewing our drivers licenses, and the bureaucracy here in Brazil is amazing. Any government process here in Brazil is very complicated, even for Brazilians, and it is even more so for "estrangeiros" (foreigners). In the US it takes one trip to the license bureau, maybe 30-60 minutes, and a small fee. Unfortunately the process here is not as simple and is much more expensive (about US $140 each). We needed to visit the tranportation department 5 times before we were done with the initial process, because they are not very helpful and they do not seem to know much. Here are some of the other things we needed to get or do: go to a couple of places to get several government documents; go to a spe...

Inspiring Quotes
2008-07-07 11:46:00
"Lord send me anywhere, only go with me; lay any burden on me, only sustain me;sever any tie, but the one that binds me to You."- David Livingstone, Missionary to AfricaThis quote inspires me to fully surrender all I am and have and do to our Lord Jesus, and to be willing to go anywhere and do anything that He wants, as long as He is with me."Oh the fullness, the pleasure, the sheer excitement of knowing God on earth."- Jim Elliot, Missionary to EcuadorWhen I first read this quote in the early 90's I realized that when this man was alive he had something I did not have. I had accepted Christ in my heart and life in 1985, but I was inspired to go much deeper in my personal relationship with Jesus, and make Him the Source of fulfillment, joy, satisfaction,... This quote is about the abundant life that Jesus talked about in John 10:10, and the satisfaction and joy and excitement that comes when you become a fully surrendered servant of the living God.

"Lost In Church" - Could This Be True ?
2008-07-03 15:52:00
The following is a portion of an article on the Facing Forever webpage (click the link to read the entire article): How would your approach to evangelism be different if you knew that up to one-half of the people attending your church were not Christians? As startling as this idea may appear, recent research indicates it is a hard reality for many churches in the United States. Researcher George Barna has discovered the disturbing fact that “half of all adults who attend Protestant churches on a typical Sunday morning are not Christian.” He also points out that people who call themselves Christians but are not born again are “a group that constitutes a majority of churchgoers.”Barna’s findings ...

Mid-Year Update
2008-07-01 13:34:00
We are praising God for what He has done in the 1st half of this year, and we are looking forward to what He is going to do in the rest of the year. Right now things are fairly quiet and we get some time to rest and recharge, because schools are out for winter break in July and we do not have any seminars or other things scheduled in the churches. Here are some numbers showing what God has done so far this year; He is truly doing immeasurably more than we ask and imagine:17,472- number of people that accepted Christ since early 20077,147- number of people that accepted Christ in 2008 (that we know of)660+- number of adults that accepted Christ in schools (not counting teachers)282- number of times we have spoken this year in a school200- number of people trained in People Sharing Jesus sem...

Abundant Life
2008-06-27 12:57:00
" I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." - John 10:10" I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ." - Philemon 6Jesus came so that we could have a reconciled relationship with God, so that we could have eternal life in heaven with Him, and also an abundant life here. The abundant life that God wants for us is a life full of joy and peace and power and victory and fruitfulness and satisfaction. This type of life brings much glory to Him. Why are there so many Christians who are not experiencing this type of life ? Churches are full of people who are missing out on the abundant life. Two of the reasons why so many Christians are missing out on God's best for t...

Criticizing Others - Ouch !
2008-06-17 13:42:00
From Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost For His Highest":Beware of Criticizing Others ODB RADIO: | Download READ: "Judge not, that you be not judged" — Matthew 7:1Jesus’ instructions with regard to judging others is very simply put; He says, "Don’t." The average Christian is the most piercingly critical individual known. Criticism is one of the ordinary activities of people, but in the spiritual realm nothing is accomplished by it. The effect of criticism is the dividing up of the strengths of the one being criticized. The Holy Spirit is the only one in the proper position to criticize, and He alone is able to show what is wrong without hurting and wounding. It is impossible to enter into fellowship with God when you are in a ...

A Sense Of Urgency
2008-06-14 10:00:00
Matthew 24:14"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."No one besides God knows when Christ will return and the end will come, but I am one of many who believe that we are clearly living in the end times. Many of the signs described in the Bible are happening or have already happened, and it is possible the end could come in our lifetime. This ought to give us a sense of urgency in our attempts to reach out in love to the lost and share the Good News of Christ. Even if the end will not come in our lifetime, our lives are so short and we have such little time here to make a difference in the eternal destiny of others. We need to have a sense of urgency and desire to share Ch...

Salvation Stories
2008-06-09 14:25:00
What a joy it is to see God working in people's lives. What a privilege it is to be a part of His work to reach out to lost people that are without Christ. Yesterday (Sunday) morning we were at Igreja Batista Ipiranga in Sao Paulo leading the 1st of 2 parts of a People Sharing Jesus seminar. The seminar was well attended by a majority of the church and it was a blessing to be there and see church members and leaders commit to share Christ with others. We received a special surprise in that there were some people visiting the church, so at the end of the training period I shared the Gospel and 7 people accepted Christ. One of these was an elderly woman named Cidinha. Cidinha was raised in the church (Presbyterian), and her family was very actively involved. She has been attending a small gro...

2008-06-05 10:50:00
"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God..."- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5As Christians we must recognize that we are in a spiritual battle against the enemy of God, and that the enemy also wants to win souls. When we are doing all we can to win souls for Christ and make disciples, the enemy will do all he can to try to stop us. Expect spiritual warfare if you have determined in your heart to join God in His work to win souls and make disciples. We experience alot of spiritual warfa...

The Fear Of God
2008-06-02 12:05:00
The following is from Experiencing God Day By Day, by Henry & Richard Blackaby (www.blackaby.org) :The Terror Of The LordKnowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences. (2 Corinthians 5:11) The fear of God is the greatest deterrent for sin (Exod. 20:20; Prov. 16:6). Those who perceive God as a benevolent and gentle grandfather will treat their sin superficially. They will worship halfheartedly. They will live life on their own terms rather than God’s. But a reverent fear of holy God will dramatically affect the way a person lives. Even though Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ, he feared God and knew that one day he would stand in judgment to give an acco...

In the Sao Paulo area there is a large mixture of people from other countries, so you have a wide variety of foods available. There are over 1 million Japanese, over 1 million Arabs, and also many Jewish people, Italians, Portuguese, Europeans, Hispanics, and Chinese. Typical Brazilian food is very good, and we enjoy it very much. Here are some types of foods that are available here:- Typical Brazilian meal: rice, beans, meat (chicken, beef, or sausage)- Feijoada: traditional meal, started by black slaves in Brazil; is a stew made of pork & beef, smoked sausage, black beans, and bacon; served with rice, greens, and farofa (a type of flour mixed with things like bacon, or sausage, and other things).- Churrasco (my favorite): Brazilian BBQ (without BBQ sau...

A Great Finish For May
2008-05-29 14:19:00
May was a great month, and God has done some wonderful things here in the Sao Paulo area. Today we finished speaking in a public school in the Sapopemba area of Sao Paulo, which is a poor favella (slum) area in the east zone of the city. We worked with Igreja Batista Luz Para As Nacoes, and we spoke in 34 classes on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday night, and this morning. We are tired after speaking so many times, but we are rejoicing for what God has done. Over 900 students accepted Christ, including 99 adults that are finishing their high school education at night, and 21 teachers also accepted Christ. Wednesday night was a real blessing for us, when we spoke to the adult students. Sometimes they can be more difficult to reach than younger students, but eveyone in our group felt the Holy Sp...

What Is A Missionary ?
2008-05-25 08:02:00
The following is from Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost From His Highest" daily devotion: What Is A Missionary ? "Again Jesus said to them ... As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." - John 20:21 A missionary is someone sent by Jesus Christ just as He was sent by God. The great controlling factor is not the needs of people, but the command of Jesus. The source of our inspiration in our service for God is behind us, not ahead of us. The tendency today is to put the inspiration out in front— to sweep everything together in front of us and make it conform to our definition of success. But in the New Testament the inspiration is put behind us, and is the Lord Jesus Himself. The goal is to be true to Him— to carry out His plans.Personal attachment to the Lord Jesus and to His perspecti...

God's Desire & Passion
2008-05-22 10:16:00
God has a strong desire and passion in His heart to save all people and to have a reconciled relationship with everyone. I Timothy 2:4 tells us that God wants all men to be saved, and 2 Peter 3:9 tells us that God does not want anyone to perish but for all to come to repentance. How strong is God's desire & passion ? So strong that He sent His only Son Jesus to suffer terribly and to die a horribly painful death on the cross, in order to make it possible for us to have a restored personal relationship with Him ("God so loved the world..." - John 3:16).God wants to take His desire and passion for all men to be saved and place it into our hearts. When we have a soft & moldable heart for God, then He is able to place...

Life In Sao Caetano / Sao Paulo, Brazil
2008-05-20 16:08:00
When most Americans think of Brazil, they think of the Amazon, jungles & rain forests, Rio de Janeiro, and Carnival... Life in a 3rd world country... And there are supposed to be monkeys and other animals running around in the streets. This is what most of America sees on TV about Brazil. Life here in Sao Caetano/ Sao Paulo is vastly different than the perception most Americans have. Our city, Sao Caetano do Sul, is located next to the city of Sao Paulo. Both are fairly modern cities, and life here is not a "3rd world country" type of life. We have excellent health care here (praise God), and we have modern conveniences like cable tv (we even have ESPN Brasil), cell phones, wireless internet,... we have many pizzaria...

We have been busy so far in May, speaking in 3 schools in the first 2 weeks of the month. Our special project in the schools is called Quality Of Life, and we speak about how to have a good future and a higher quality of life with joy & peace & hope. We speak about the Body, the Soul, and the Spirit, and in the final part we share the Good News of Jesus plainly & directly. Afterwards we have a prayer time for students & teachers to invite Christ into their hearts & lives to be their Lord & Savior. After this we hand out a great discipleship tool called Livro Da Vida (Book Of Life), which a ministry here in Brazil offers to all churches to use in the schools. Aft...

Some Great Quotes
2008-05-16 10:50:00
I was on the web the other day and found some great quotes, most of which are about missions and evangelism:"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose."- Jim Elliot"God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supplies."- J. Hudson Taylor"If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him." - C.T. Studd"Do not think me mad. It is not to make money that I believe a Christian should live. The noblest thing a man can do is, just humbly to receive, and then go amongst others and give." - David Livingstone"How little chance the Holy Spirit has nowadays. The churches and missionary societies have so bound him in red tape that they practically ask Him to sit in a corner while they do the work themselves." ...

God Always Does What He Says or Promises
2008-05-13 15:38:00
Do you know God well enough that you know for certain that He will always do what He has told you or promised you ? God needs to teach us about His perfect character and about His perfect faithfulness. One of the best lessons that He teaches us is to know that He will do whatever He has said or promised. This is His nature, to keep His promises. He cannot do otherwise. He does not lie, and He is always the same and will never change, and He will always keep His word.Isaiah 14:24 says "The Lord Almighty has sworn: Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand." Isaiah 46:11 says "What I have said that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do." And Numbers 23:19 is another great verse: "God is not a man, that he should lie; nor a son of man...

Brazil Is Very Open To The Gospel
2008-05-08 16:51:00
It is amazing to see how open Brazilians are to the Gospel. God has truly prepared a great harvest here in Brazil, and we are privileged to be a part of this great work of God. We are always excited about seeing God touch and save so many people, and we are happy about how open Brazilians are to the Gospel, but at the same time we are somewhat sad. When you see such wonderful people that are very open to the Gospel, you cannot help but think about how different it is in the US. The difference is incredible. How can a nation founded by Christians and long considered a Christian nation be so closed to hearing about Jesus ? Why do so many people have hard hearts towards the things of God ? Why are many other nations and people groups in the world far more open...

Is The Church Truly Following Jesus ?
2008-05-04 18:47:00
Is the church today what God wants it to be ? How does the church today compare to the church in the Bible, particularly the early church in the book of Acts ? The early church in Acts is considered the model of what the church is to be like. In Matthew 4:19 Jesus says "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." In order to truly follow Jesus we must be "fishers of men" - people who activiely share Christ with others in their daily lives. In many churches today there is alot of talk about sharing the Good News of Christ with others and of making disciples. It seems that many churches talk more about the Great Commission than actually do it. How many people in the church are being true to Jesus and being fishers of men ...

Ipiranga Museum In Sao Paulo
2008-05-01 12:53:00
Today is the Labor Day holiday in Brazil, so I have time today to post something new about Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is not considered a tourist city, it is mostly an industrial city, and it is also considered the financial capital of Brazil and of South America. Even though it is not a tourist city and there are problems with crime & pollution & traffic, it does have some nice places to visit. One of these places is the Ipiranga Museum, which was built to commemorate the independance of Brazil in 1822. The museum is housed in a beautiful building and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The museum includes many cultural objects and artifacts from the 6th to the 20th century that depict the history, culture, and life in Brazil. It also has alot of information on the history of the city of Sao Paulo. Here are some pictures to enjoy.

God's Vision For Our Ministry
2008-04-28 15:52:00
God called us to the Sao Paulo area of Brazil to work with and help and train churches to share the Good News of Christ with others. There are approx. 18 million people in the city of Sao Paulo, and another 2.5 million living in the ABC area, which consists of the cities of Santo Andre, Sao Bernardo, Sao Caetano (where we live), Diadema, and Maua. God gave us a vision and a plan, where He will show His glory, that includes the following four things:1. Preach in Churches: we preach to the members of the church, to en- courage and challenge them to be the "fisher of men" that Jesus wants all of us to be. We also preach the Gospel at the end of each message to the lost that are visiting or that are members of the church. Interestingly, about 1/2 of the people...

We live in Sao Paulo and we are only 1 to 1-1/2 hour from the ocean, depending on where you go. When we get the chance we like to go to the beach to relax for the day, especially after a long & busy week. There are many beaches to choose from that are close in Praia Grande, Santos, Guaruja, Bertioga, Riviera,... We especially like Enseada Beach in Guaruja and Riviera Beach. Because it is tropical weather here, you can go to the beach a good part of the year. Most people say that the best beaches in Brazil are in the northeast part of the country, and we hope to travel there sometime in the future. Here are some beach pictures to enjoy.
