2007-08-14 09:01:56
TOKYO (AFP) - The world's oldest person, a Japanese woman who counted eating well and getting rest as her hobbies, died Monday at age 114, a news report said. Yone Minagawa, a widow who lived in a nursing home but was still sprightly late in life, died "of old age" Monday evening, Kyodo News reported. There was no immediate answer to a telephone call placed to city hall in her town in southern Fukuoka prefecture.Born on January 4, 1893, Minagawa was already in her 50s when Japan surrendered in World War II.She had been certified as the world's oldest person by the Guinness Book of World Records after Emma Faust Tillman, the daughter of freed American slaves, died in January.Despite her advanced age, Minagawa was said to enjo...

U.S. Life Expectancy Below That of 41 Other Nations
2007-08-14 04:54:58
Life expectancy in the U.S. has reached its highest point ever, but it is exceeded by the rates in 41 other countries, the AP/Arizona Daily Star reports. The U.S. has been slipping for decades in international rankings of life expectancies as other countries are improving health care, nutrition and lifestyles, according to the AP/Daily Star. Countries that rank above the U.S. include Japan, most of Europe, Jordan and the Cayman Islands. A U.S. resident born in 2004 has a life expectancy of 77.9 years, placing the U.S. in 42nd place, down from 11th place two decades ago.Researchers say the lower U.S. ranking is attributed to the high uninsured rate among the population, in addition to rising obesity rates and racial disparities in life expectancy. Black U.S. residents have a shorter life s...

Latins Traditionally Prefer to take Care of Their Own
2007-08-14 04:09:28
Latinos traditionally prefer to care for their older loved ones at home, says Conchy Bretos, a Miami-based housing consultant. But that's a challenge for low-income families who can't afford extra help for a frail elder. Because Medicaid pays only for nursing home care, not for every day assistance at home, many seniors in public housing are forced out of their homes prematurely."Most people need just a little help with dressing, meal preparation, bathing, and supervislon,"Bretos says." They don't need full-time doctors and nurses."Bretos, formerly Florida's secretary for Aging and Adult Services, came up with an innovative idea: get exemptions from Medicaid to bring assisted-living services to public housing. Now 40 public-housing proj-ects in 18 states help people like Luisa Montoto Quinone...

SAN FRANSCICO, CALIFORNIA -Matthai Chakko Kuruvila, Chronicle Religion WriterSunday, August 12, 2007 Yusuf Bey believed fish sandwiches and bean pies would lift up marginalized black people in Oakland. For more than three decades, his bakery was both pulpit and profit center, providing the money to start other nearby businesses, such as a hair salon and school, to bear witness to black self-empowerment.But the block of stores on San Pablo Avenue has withered since Bey's death four years ago. The final blow came this month, when police raided Your Black Muslim Bakery, smashing its windows and putting its leaders in jail. The empire's heir, Yusuf Bey IV, sits in jail facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon. | Elder 92 year Old Starved to Death After Paying Rent and Losing his Savings to Elder Financial Abuse |
2007-08-14 00:17:11
BY ERIN L. NISSLEY Staff Writer The Times Tribune - PA, USAThe 92-year-old had been paying $300 a month for a room and care from Helen and Walter Pestinikas. Instead, the couple starved Mr. Kly to death, keeping his family from him while they drained more than $30,000 from his bank account. When the couple, who operated a funeral home on North Main Avenue, were charged with third-degree murder in Mr. Kly’s death, they argued that they had no obligation to care for him. Prosecutors argued that they did, because they had a contract to do so.The Pestinikases’ convictions in February 1987 was precedent-setting — it was the first time anyone had been convicted of murder for failing to live up to the terms of a care contract, according to then-District Attor...

Senator Kohl Aims to Fight Elder Abuse
2007-08-13 19:05:52
With the number of elder abuse cases on the rise, Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl is taking action. Senator Kohl made a stop in La Crosse today, renewing his call for a nationwide system of background checks aimed at preventing elder abuse. Wisconsin is currently part of a seven-state pilot program responsible for doing background checks on applicants to senior care facilities. Kohl hopes taking the program to national level will prevent elder abuse nationwide, and strengthen the current efforts in Wisconsin.Last year in Wisconsin alone almost ten thousand applicants were screened before they were hired by long-term care facilities, two hundred sixty-five of those applicants were denied b...

2007-08-13 14:47:48
Mobile phone footage shot at a privately-run care home shows frail and elderly residents being goaded into shouting foul-mouthed obscenities at each other. The three-minute video appears to show a woman trying to incite a confrontation between a confused woman and a male resident in the lounge of the home. She repeatedly persuades the bewildered pensioners to trade offensive vulgarities. At one point, the fearful victim of the abuse pleads with her laughing tormentor, saying: "He will come after me", while a second resident tells the woman she is "making bother", but she then turns her attention to the male resident, trying to persuade him to retaliate."This is an example of elder abuse, and elder abuse destroys lives. But it's still a hidden issue and we just don't know how much goes on....

The Story of Elder Abuse that Needs to be Told !
2007-08-13 14:40:14
In this era of preposterous house prices, a lot of older people are sitting in goldmines. Never mind that these goldmines are their homes, have been their homes often for decades. And their greedy, evil, ungrateful offspring all too often are ushering their parents out of their homes and into institutions solely in order to get their greedy mitts on the goldmines left behind. Old people are often vulnerable. Their children are often their only lifeline. Like abused children, they feel conflicted loyalties to the very people abusing them. Abuse of elders is sometimes physical, but more often it's emotional neglect coupled with financial exploitation. That's why elder abuse so rarely is reported. But in order to get away w...

2007-08-12 09:15:02
Today is my 65th birthday and although I know 65 is no longer old, it's time enough to have an endless stream of memories. Memories that, as anyone who is getting older knows, pop into your head at the strangest times and without provocation. Following, are a few of mine.I remember television when it was relatively new. I watched old black-and-white cartoons; one that comes to mind is Steamboat Willie starring the original Mickey Mouse. The next shows I remember watching are Roy Rogers, Fury, Hopalong Cassidy, Buck Rogers and in later years, the Mickey Mouse club. A special treat was watching the magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tripping the light fantastic, and who could forget I Love Lucy?I recall clunky black phones with party lines; they have ...

Cat Predicts Deaths
2007-08-11 04:35:03
Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours. His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live. “He doesn’t make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die,” said Dr. David Dosa in an interview. The 2-year-old feline was adopted as a kitten and grew up in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The facility treats people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses. After about six months, the staff noticed Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. | 2007-08-01 14:30:00 |
When I learned that my mother was abducted, I felt like the Grim Reaper just ripped out a big chunk of my heart. I don’t know what to think. What goes through the mind of crazy people is only known to those who have the power to read minds or to those who are crazier. During the summer, my heart got stitched up, even for just a moment, when I had the chance to spend a lot of time with my friends. But unfortunately summer left, and I cannot forget. On the last day my mother and I were together, we went to Tigbauan to sort out matters regarding my boarding house for my summer internship. Afterwards, we went to South Park, a nearby restaurant where we ordered Tenderloin Tips and Chopsuey. We Had a long wait and I was surprised that she didn’t complain or wasn’t even annoyed. She was silen...

2007-07-31 14:00:00
By LAURA SCOTT lascott@kcstar.com.The grand jury indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has focused attention on the grisly underground activity of dog-fighting.The federal charges are a reminder that animal abuse of a horrific nature, even if prohibited by law, goes on all too often. Some people even call it “sport.” It attracts money, drugs, and gambling, all bathed in the blood of animals who have been trained, tortured and abused to get them to go after other dogs until the death. The Vick charges represent the extreme of animal cruelty. That’s why the details make us squirm uncomfortably. If the charges are true, the ways losing dogs were dispensed with indicate terribly sick individuals, one of ...

Elder Justice "Gone Awfully Wrong!"
2007-07-30 15:30:00
Florence, Alabama Elizabeth S. HillI read recently that in 2006 there were almost 500,000 cases of elder abuse reported in domestic settings. If there were this many cases in homes, how many cases were in institutions, and how many abuses were not reported? It's frightening to even think about it.In the past few years I have become aware of the lack of love and the excess of greed when an old person has Alzheimer's or some other debilitating disease, and can be manipulated.I witnessed a case when a friend with Alzheimer's had every legal document he had carefully made when he was well reversed and changed during the last six months of his life. They were changed so that people whom he had not intended to benefit were benefitted from his legacy. There was no one with legal or medical authori...

A Peek at Developing Technologies of the Future
2007-07-28 14:05:00
Andrew Rosenson, a doctor who heads up Chicago Heartscan, didn't peer so much into the future, but showed us the results of some remarkable recent advances in medical imaging. Combining various imaging technologies, CT scans with PET scans enable physicians and surgeons to precisely isolate areas of disease within a patient's body. Last year, given my family's history of heart disease, I decided to take advantage of this technology by having my heart scanned by a 64-slice CT scanner. Contrary to my critics' views, I do, in fact, have a heart:Later in the day, Sirius satellite radio founder, Martine Rothblatt, discussed "Cybernetic Biostasis." The idea is that people should be creating digital mindfiles throughout their lives that could be used to revive th...
