Biennial teapot exhibition
2008-05-06 01:31:00
Craft Alliance's biennial teapot exhibition is one of the institution's most popular events. This year, the show includes more than 80 clay teapots made by more than 60 potters. The pots were chosen by master potter Fong Choo, who invited 20 artists and chose the rest from submissions. "I selected the works based on four criteria: strong form, great craftsmanship, skill in handling the medium and attention to detail," Choo said. Potters from all over the country are featured. In addition to being more or less functional — some of the pots might frustrate users — all the pots were required to fit within a 10-by-10-inch box.Full article...

Six Degrees of Collaboration
2008-03-31 16:45:00
Sam Chung, teapot, Andrew Martin, glaze and firing, 2007, porcelain, 7" x 8" x 4". Photo by Peter Lee.Northern Clay Center 2424 Franklin Avenue East Minneapolis, Minnesota 55406 USAFor the past eight months, six artists who work in porcelain have been shipping bisque ware to one another, forms that are distinctive and representative of their individual work. Their collaborators have then glazed and fired the bisqued work in their particular gaze palettes. While the potters in this exhibition were able to see the forms which they were finishing, the instruction to complete the pots in their own styles has resulted in a combination of forms and finishes that is occasionally as startling as a surrealist collage.More details...

Gräfsnäs castle teapot?
2008-03-09 14:42:00
Johannes has been researching Gräfsnäs castle ruin near Gothenburg, Sweden. The former castle has an interesting history. According to the legend it was cursed by a woman that was badly treated by the landowner. She told that it would be plagued by fire three times with 100 years apart, and the castle was actually burnt in 1634, 1734 and 1834.During the day of the fire in 1834 many people came to 'rescue' the things in the castle and many things were stolen. It is believed that the teapot above came from the castle via a gardener. Can it be dated to before or after the looting in 1834 I wonder? It was made by a company called Shaw & Fisher...anyone know anything about them?...

Teapots: Object to Subject
2008-01-27 10:04:00
One of 45 teapots on display in "Teapots: Object to Subject" selected from among the entries in the 2004 Survey of Contemporary American Teapots at the Craft Alliance in St. Louis, Missouri. The best of both established artists and the most promising, innovative new artists from the survey are represented.Exhibition curator Leslie Ferrin, author of Teapots Transformed: Exploration of an Object, has been curating exhibitions on contemporary teapots for more than 20 years. In this exhibition, Ferrin presents the concept that as the teapot becomes more abstracted, its function becomes less relevant. In effect, the subject of the work becomes the primary focus; the initial object, the teapot, becomes a secondary concern for the artist and the viewer.Richard...

By Dusti Rhodes Short, stout, handle and spout will all be taken for an interesting spin today at the “Second Annual Texas Teapot Tournament.” The competition features plenty of interesting takes on the teakettle by potters from around the globe. The creations range from traditional pots to more abstract designs that — if they could talk — might get all steamed up and shout, “How the hell do you tip me over and pour me out?”Artists such as Joanne Taylor Brown, Nancy Goodearl and Joy Tanner offer more traditional teapots, with a touch of inspiration from seashells, houseplants and haystacks, respectively. Among the more abstract ones are Mirtha Aertker’s, which have baby ar...
