Really sexy cars
2008-07-01 00:00:00
Ok, so I've been looking at cars for the past few hours now lol fun stuff :)I started to look around at the super high end cars also like this sexy model: (Saturn Sky $32,000.00)Are you kidding me though? I can't buy that... its too good looking, I would most certainly crash it on the first day and I would be overprotective and afraid to take it anywhere. Ideally something like that will be my next car, first I need a good starting car like the Sunfire. I actually really like the Sunfire, very nice car and the 98/2002 models average $2,500/$4,000 which is a laughing matter for the price of a car. So I will probably end up going with that in the near future....

CARS CARS CARS??
2008-06-30 21:52:00
Still looking at cars, waiting on making "the big purchase". Not sure what I should buy though.I have had my eye on the Pontiac Sunfire for some time now, a 2002 model, they go for about $3,500 - $4,000. They look like nice cars, I think for that price they are the best cars to go for.If I wanna go a little higher end, not too sure what I should get. I see some really sick Chevrolet Camaro's 1998 - 2001 that go for $6,000 - $10,000.. and they are really nice cars if I must say so! (picture below)I'm still looking around though, I wonder what some other good looking cars are around those price ranges? And no, I don't want to buy a Civic or a Corolla!...

Re: domain name expansion approved for implementation
2008-06-30 14:12:00
ICANN emailed me back and they said that the first-round application process for domain under the new system will begin in early 2009 and they told me to subscribe to the ICANN newsletter and news alerts to stay in touch with this subject, so I did that.I might be looking for business partners to get in on this with me. So that means we will be investing our own money on this, if interested let me know. If after lots of research I see a great opportunity here I will be investing lots of money.1) First thing would be to understand the obvious - existing competition in this space (the bulk domain purchasers) who will surely get screwed bigtime in their existing business once this system is implemented because the potential values of the sum of their existing...

domain name expansion approved for implementation
2008-06-27 19:45:00
This is huge news. ICANN just announced not too long ago that the proposal to change domain names has been approved (not fully approved yet though). Full article here. The proposed changes mean that the domain names will be open to any extension, i.e. instead of the regular 16 extensions (.com, .net, etc..) that exist right now. there will be an unlimited number of extensions (like .bank, .travel, .yourlastname). The 2nd major change is the domain character set will expand from just the regular English alphabet to include foreign characters like Chinese and Arabic. This has huge implications, like the obvious fake domains that get created i.e. shop.amazon, america.bank.ICANN will have a special initial domain name buyin...

A real cheap maneuver
2008-06-21 11:26:00
The other day I got a $5 card for Pizzahut in the mail (one of those coupons everyone gets in the mail). So today I decide to go for a quick bite to eat and make use of this little cash reward - I figure I would pop in for the all-you-can-eat lunch or just grab a personal pan pizza which I thought runs in at just under $10. (so pay with the $5 and credit card the rest)So I sit down at the restaurant and order the personal pan supreme (becuase the all-you-can-eat is only during weekdays). At the end, the waiter brings my bill, the total is $5 and 7 cents. So I drop the $5 car along with my TD Emerald Visa card and slide the tray to the side of the table. The waiter looks down at the tray trying to decipher what just happened:Me: "I'll pay with those"Waiter: (looks at me. still trying to comp...

2008 MMVA's
2008-06-17 18:43:00
So on Sunday I went to the MMVA's. It was a good show with a few artists and bands that I was happy to see live.I was in front of the main stage so I saw- Simple Plan- illScarlet- Hedley- and RihannaSean Kingston, FloRider, and Kardinal Offishal also performed a song (from the other stage).New Kids on the block performed at the end for some reason (they haven't been around for 15 years). By the time they were supposed to be on I just left. Jason Speza of the Sens also made an appearance so I just had to yell Go Leafs. I'm sure he appreciated that one.Prior to the performances, I was standing by the red carpet so I saw some celebs walk out of their fancy cars. Most of the time I didn't even know who was walking out of the car, nor did I care. But it was a good show, glad to see so many artis...

Summer fun
2008-06-08 01:04:00
Today officially marked the kick start to the summer parties with the hot hot heat outside. I love it what can I say. Was at the beach all day getting my tan on. I happened to see the craziest thing - some guy was walking down the boardwalk all casually at the beach and he was wearing a live snake around his neck (never seen that before). I wonder if it was venomous. After a day at the beaches I hung out with my crew, we went to see the Zohan movie. I have to hand it to Adam Sandler that was one of the best movies he's ever made. Zohan might end up being The comedy for 2008 it was really funny. Go see it if you haven't already....

Stupidest Job Interiew Blunders
2008-06-02 20:37:00
ok folks. I was reading these during lunch at work today. I was laughing so hard on some of these so I just have to share. ENJOY!- In one case, an applicant was asked why he wanted to work for a company. His answer was jaw dropping. "Because I fancy the girl who works in reception," he told the man who would never be his boss.- Another was pointed about his demands. He refused to travel for his job whenever his favourite soccer team was playing at home. - Then there's the would-be drone who insisted on performing magic tricks during the interview and the woman who kept giving hints that she murdered her husband.- Another guy wouldn't stop checking his BlackBerry, which he not so successfully tried to hide under the desk during the interrogation.(oh this one is gold) - One candidate brought...

2008-05-22 22:27:00
In response to this article Mr. Bryce's view on programmers - my comment (in bold) * programmers often bamboozle others and heighten their own self-importance - Ok, I'll give him this one. Right now I'm baboozling Mr. Bryce, but in all fairness he deserves it. Besides, I'm in a bamboozling mood tonight. No, seriously though. Good programmers practice what is known as egoless programming. Everyone who knows me knows that I have a huge ego, but when I am programming and working with others I leave my ego out of it, thats the way it should be. * the average programmer has a lower IQ than any other worker with a college degree - your kidding right * programmers show signs of sloppiness and mental laziness - On the contrary, programmers are detai...

Java has the flu
2008-05-12 22:39:00
This is a fantastically written article that sums up the state of Java in the industry today:Java Has The FluHeres a graph illustrating the movement:Do read the whole article, it hits the nail on the head with the problems with Java. While developers are making the move to better modern technologies such as C# .NET and to a lesser extent Adobe Flex, Java still has tremendous momentum and so it will still be around for a while..NET is great for the enterprise, you can actually leverage all the greatness from Java into .NET, i.e. get rid of those limited .NET controls replace them with something else and even better you can apply the wonderful Java architectures / Java technologies (the good ones) like MVC and O/R mapping and use them in .NET as well.In my boo...

Always write complete unit tests for all your logic and document your code to make your fellow developers (and yourself in the long run) happy even if management shrugs them off as less important because of time pressure, they should still be important to you - don't compromise the quality of your work because it can hurt the system as a whole....

2008-05-01 22:11:00
I just moved into my pimpin new crib yesterday and I love it. My apartment is very beatiful (with floor to ceiling windows), the neighboorhood is nice, very peaceful, and lots of good looking girls around. Best of all the million-dollar view from the 15th floor is breathtaking - can't put a price on that baby. Never felt so good waking up in the morning. So, I'm officially out of the downtown area. I used to live near Yonge and St. Clair it was not bad for a first place but once my 1 year lease was up I was out of there. Among other things, mainly it was way too busy to live in an area like that and my work is right by Yonge and St. Clair and I like to keep some distance between the two. While I sm living in a much better place now, it also happens that I'm pa...

I just want to say that achieving what you want in life is all about dedication and effort. These past two weeks I've been designated as the lead for fellow UofT CompSci and Engineering new grads on an intensive Industrial Hygiene Air Sampling module and other developers in our project come to me with their technical questions and I am happy to be helping out the team and contributing to the success of the project. I am where I am because of my attitude and the same goes for others like me.One of my friends (Matt Foy) who I was talking to last month plays in the NHL for the Minnesota Wild, one of my best friends is a video game animator for XBOX360 games, another good friend of mine is a medical doctor moving into surgery. | Donald Trump: Think Big and Kick Ass |
2008-04-20 00:45:00
I am reading the book by Donald Trump titled think big and kick ass. So I will be periodically posting some reactions to various excerpts from this book where I feel it is necessary. Here is the first. In the survey question "What is your attitude towards people"the last two options read c) Hire the best people and trust them to do a good job. d) Hire the best people and treat them professionally but watch them like a hawk.Trump justifies option d) as the best one he says hire the best people and don't trust them. But in the programming world I don't think I agree with this at all. I would say its crucial to give your programmers a high level of trust and freedom while setting rules where you see fit of course. This sort of connects with another quest...

This is actually in response to the Twitter posting by my friend Chris.I know I shouldn't knock it until I try it, but I don't think something like Twitter makes the world a better place at all. That idea of checking someones constant status like some crazed maniac reminds me somewhat of the "crackberry" where obsessed people need to constantly be connected. We have MSN and facebook we don't need anything else.I say, the weather is beautiful outside so get off twitter and out into the sun and you can listen to the birds chirp and twitter instead. if you want to know what someone is up to you can check their facebook status or just give them a shout on your cell....

Busy days
2008-04-18 22:49:00
Work has been keeping me busy lately. About a week ago I started working on a module that is very involved (Industrial Hygiene), pretty much one of the senior architects has designated me as the lead for this module, so I have the honor of figuring it all out, coding the main part for it and helping a few other developers who are assigned some of its subsections. Theres a lot to it and the logic goes very deep so I have been trying to piece it all together from whatever specs and documents there are from the legacy system (not much!! yikes) and so on.The main chunk of work has been in the C# service class where I've been writing lots of calculations for the industrial hygiene air sampling logic - feels like I'm back in university! On the positive side, it feels very rewarding to be applying...

Was at the mall today (again) buying clothes and fun stuff like that. Bought a nice shirt from Banana Republic.Just wondering where people like to shop and why. Personally, I like to go for whatever I like and what looks good on me, price doesn't matter that much. These past few months I've been shopping mainly at Banada Republic, Abercrombie, Le Chateau and Foot Locker. Also bought some odd stuff from Guess and Sears like cologne or whatever. So for stores I pretty much go to wherever I find something nice. I'm still looking for Jeans, I've got a really good pair right now but they are old. I saw a good one Guess Jeans at Jean Machine a new one they just got in (its $120) lol, i'm going to check some other places maybe I'll find one I like better. Also where ...

Semantic Web 3.0 is a really good article about future predictions and discussions about emerging trends in the web world and where things might go in the next three or four years. I found everything in this article I already knew, so there is really nothing surprising. At any rate, the dude knows what he is talking about. Everyone is aware of the semantic web (a big leap forward if it happens. I hope you weren't sleeping through your natural language processing course cuz that might come in handy :) ). So we should watch its growing R&D very closely in the near future.By the way, if you have business ideas that will piggy back off this or just wanna fire some brainstorming around, do share. *Note: I have no interest in discussing a semantic web search engine or any crack pot idea like that...

As most of you know (all three of you reading my blog lol), I bought a macbook not too long ago.. Anyways, I just want to say that iTunes is one of the best software products around. I actually remember in my first job when I was a software developer co-op for the Ministry of Education back in 2001 there was a quick presentation about macs and they were saying how iTunes will be the next big thing.. (I think thats what it was about but it was a long time ago so my memory could be a little clouded about that). But yeah, iTunes is great. It jives well with the Leopard OS :) I use it to keep track of my massive music collection and am now starting to add my movies onto it (dvds, music videos from youtube, and TV shows). | 2008-03-27 21:27:00 |
Unless you've been living in a box this week you probably heard that there will be a good chance of a TTC strike on tuesday. Now, being the clever deviant that I am, I noticed that this lands right on April fools. So, theres the off chance that the strike will get settled in time, but not to fear. If it does you don't have to go to work because you've got the perfect original excuse. Just play it something like this:Manager: "Where were you yesterday.."You: (deer in the headlights look)You: "There was work yesterday? I couldn't get to work because of the strike."Manager: "The strike was canceled. Didn't you hear?" You: "Yes, I heard. but I thought that was an April's fools joke. (points to calender)"Enjoy your vacation day people....

How to nail the performance review
2008-03-24 21:56:00
About a week ago I had my annual performance review. That's right, that exciting time when you meet with your manager and they put your work under the microscope and they hand you some official piece of paper with stuff on it, they tell you what a great job you are doing and you get a nice raise + bonus and everybody's happy. and of course there is the alternative that they tell you things aren't working out for whatever reason and they have to let you go. I'm pleased to say that mine went well :)Most people are absolutely terrified of the PR reviews for some reason, others shrug it off and just want to get back to their work or whatever. There is really no reason to panic or fear because by the time it comes there is really nothing you can do. Also, ...

One cool feature about my mac is the built-in video camera - iSight. When I was talking tot he future shop sales rep I told him I play guitar and I want to use the mac to record my songs on my comp. He actually said the sound recording on the machine is no good at all and you have to be right up close to the computer or it won't work. Much to my surprise, he was mistaken. I tried recording a video or two where I'm playing guitar and you can hear the sound quite well. (stay tuned for those, I'll be posting some guitar riffs here and there)The i-Sight has nice image capturing and there is some mac software to add filters on your image too.Neat....

What's the problem with Portal technologies?
2008-03-12 23:42:00
From what I can tell many are (still) out to build their own Content Management System. Why? Its one thing to take an existing portal thats out there and customize it i.e. write your own portlets on top for functionality that's not already built in to the portal. But the portal should have all the basics built-in right. So why throw that all away and start from scratch? This stuff has been done to death enough, we would think there would be something available that gets the job done. So why do companies want to put their valuable resources into writing their own brand new CMS?...

Microsoft MVC framework
2008-03-10 19:20:00
So Microsoft finally gets with the program and is coming out with their own .NET MVC framework. MVC architectures apparently aren't that popular with .NET yet, which surprises me actually, but I think that will change with the arrival of this Microsoft MVC release. Its been around in Java for a long time now and with RoR and all the others. Before my current job I didn't know anything about .NET, my background was in Java enterprise apps.Anyways, I guess we will have to wait and see if it picks up enough momentum. To those who made it out to the Toronto Code Camp, the session on the Microsoft MVC was pretty full and apparently the framework is still lacking - when they said it doesn't even support lazy loading the cr...

The thought of working abroad has crossed my mind, its definitely something I will be considering down the road in my career to work in the States or Europe. A former colleague of mine used to talk about his experiences in other countries working in LA, Europe, and Australia. He said Australia was pretty cool because they could leave work during lunch time to head down to the beach to surf, and they had "nap times" there as well. Its interesting that the Australian managers there realize the value associated with letting employees take a quick power nap during work. Its obviously frowned upon in North America, I'm pretty sure if a boss walks by and finds their employee sleeping on the job they will wake up with a pink slip.I know two technical recruiters personally, they are good friends o...
