When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.
Hoosierteacher stood before the crowded lecture hall at MHR University. Styg, Guru, Zappa, mdierk( the A students) were all in the front row, eager to learn. Firstfan was in the back with his dunce cap on. All of the students were there. Super7 and Jon Tollerud were hoping for an in-depth discussion of the now famous 3-3-5 defense. But instead Hoosierteacher had some unusual items in front of him.
When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large, empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. Hoosierteacher then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full . They agreed it was.

The Pro-Football-Reference Blog has a short post on Al Davis and his infatuation with 1st round picks.
My favorite part of the article shows that of the two teams on which he had 22 former 1st-rounders, both were 4-12. It's amazing to see how a team can stockpile so many 'talented' players, yet be so poor. We can only hope the Darren McFadden pick continues the trend.

Not all Bronco's are completely forgotten, but there are times when the younger generation of fans need to remember the greats of the Bronco past. When the Denver Broncos formed in 1960 along with the AFL, they team was filled with no names and castaways. One of those men was a castaway from the Chicago Bears. Lionel Taylor went to the Bears in his rookie season after a stellar career at unknown New Mexico Highlands University. Taylor spent eight games with the Bears, mostly on the bench, logging zero pass catches and was released.
As with most NFL rejects, Lionel Taylor found himself looking for work in the AFL. He walked on to try out for the Denver Broncos and after several one handed grabs in practice he quickly worked himself into the starting line up. The Denver Broncos on Tuesday announced several appointments to their Football Operations Department, including the naming of Jim Goodman as Vice President of Football Operations / Player Personnel and the hiring of Brian Xanders as Assistant General Manager.
Goodman served as the Broncos’ Director of Player Personnel for the previous two years and has worked in the club’s personnel department for the last 10 seasons. He will oversee the day-to-day football operations of the organization and will continue to manage the Broncos’ overall scouting process. Goodman also coordinates the Broncos’ draft preparations and is involved in the evaluation and acquisition of both pro and college players.

In 44 games at Kent State, Williams started 37 contests. He recorded 245 tackles (167 solo), three sacks for minus-26 yards, 14 ½ stops for losses of 53 yards and a pair of quarterback pressures. He caused and recovered seven fumbles and also blocked one punt. He deflected 25 passes and gained 209 yards with two touchdowns on 13 pass thefts (16.1-yard average). He also returned twelve kickoffs for 252 yards (21.0-yard average).

In the grand scheme of things: no, Darrell Jackson is not better than Javon Walker.
But, as of right now, Darrell Jackson is a better buy and a smaller risk for nearly the exact same production in extremely similar offenses.
I wanted to put our old #2 WR up against what looks to be our new #2 WR. To do so, I'll run through some numbers and discuss where these players are and have been in their careers. The goal here is in hoping to find some proof that that Denver shouldn't have a dropoff in WR production.

Life as Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler once knew it has changed.
Cutler was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a Broncos source confirmed.
While this is the most serious type of diabetes, making Cutler insulin dependent, the Broncos are confident it will not negatively impact his career performance. Cutler, who could not be reached for comment, has been taking insulin shots since he was diagnosed and has been participating in the Broncos' offseason workout program.
Several athletes have enjoyed long professional careers while playing with Type 1 diabetes, including former big-league baseball stars Ron Santo and Jackie Robinson and hockey's Bobby Clarke. Among the former NFL players who played despite Type 1 diabetes were center Jay Leeuwenburg, who starred at the University of Colorado, quarterback Wade Wilson, and defensive back Mike Echols.

A lot of folks know about the popular Cover Two system. At the same time, there is a lot of misunderstanding about this system.
Some common myths:
Cover Two is a formation.
Cover Two and Tampa Two are the same thing.

I decided the best way to kick off a topic like this was to feature an article written by someone who lived through the experience. Analysis: B: Some may question whether or not the Ravens paniced a bit when the Falcons sleected Matt Ryan #3. The move down with Jacksonville was a shred one for Ozzie Newsome, but to give most of it away to get back in the Top-20 for Flacco had some scratching their heads. It is obvious the Ravens had Flacco graded significantly higher than Brian Brohm and Chad Henne. It’s really shocking to me how irrelevant the Broncos currently seem to the national media. Their draft picks got almost no discussion this past weekend, and they’re getting graded consistently at a C level for their rookie class. For the most part, the graders are fools who don’t know what they’re talking about, but it still speaks to this ho-hum feeling around the team. I saw two 2009 mock drafts (by Andrew Perloff of SI and Todd McShay of ESPN) which project the Broncos to be picking in the low teens again next year. We’re irrelevant, and we have no chance for improvement. Viva la Broncos fanhood!

There are a lot of features at MHR that a member can use to make his or her fanposts look better. There are also tools to help make your work easier to use by others. Many of these are "easy" to figure out, and many feautures are explained by clicking for help on the right side of the page when you are putting your fanpost together (by clicking on the question mark).
But I'm an older guy who didn't grow up around computers, and I understand the frustration that can come from not understanding computers. In fact, I'm the only editor at MHR that doesn't have an impressive background in computer technology. No fear my friends. If I can learn it, we all can learn it.

The NFL Draft has always been a holiday for me. I can't remember a time in the past 5 years that I haven't at least watched the first round. (The last two years I've watched the entire day one which was previously 3 rounds.) I was hoping to attempt to watch the entire thing "buzzer to buzzer" for the first time this year until I realized a scheduling conflict would mean I was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on the day of the draft. I would have backed out but I had already paid the money and was already 5 weeks into my "training hikes". I like to think a little part of me died that day.
But this isn't meant to be a emotional rollercoaster so let me get to the point. At the bottom of the Canyon there is a payphone which I used to call my family to get all the updates. The Denver Broncos on Monday signed seven college free agents, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
In addition, the club waived defensive tackle Michael Bozeman, safety Steve Cargile, guard Mark Fenton, fullback Steven Jackson, linebacker William Kershaw, fullback Paul Smith and running back Marquis Weeks.
The following seven college free agents were signed by Denver on Monday.
Anthony Alridge (5-foot-9, 175 pounds) is a running back who finished his career at the University of Houston ranked sixth in school history with 2,595 rushing yards on 363 carries for a 7.1-yard rushing average. Random thoughts from the weekend.
I watched almost the entire draft. It's harder to watch the draft buzzer to buzzer than it is not to. I really liked the 10 minute clock switch this year. More than in years past, I felt like I had an idea when a team was scrambling to make a trade, come to a consensus on one guy, or when they knew exactly who they wanted.
On that note, Denver got their man at pick 12. You had to feel good that Denver was able to pick their top guy of everyone that they could have hoped would be available. Clady, Williams, Albert, Stewart, and Mendenhall were all available at 12. Denver did their homework on this pick, and they seemed to pick fairly quickly, which tells me that they had no second thoughts about Ryan Clady. Anytime Coach Shanahan tells the media he's starting a rookie offensive lineman the same day he drafted him and guaranteed him $11 Million dollars, it's obvious that this is the most confident he...

Anthony Alridge (WR - Houston) RB/WR Don't tell Anthony that he is a dreaded 'tweener. Reportedly responded to not being drafted by swearing vengeance on every team in the league, except for the Broncos of course, who nabbed him right up. Alridge is an electrifying player, a north south one-cut runner with a massive chip on his shoulder and experience at multiple positions. Go easy on me, this is my first diary on MHR :)
First, a change in philosophy:When we won back to back Championships, we had a lot of high character guys - Rod & Easy Ed, Elway, Davis, Neil Smith, just about the entire offensive line, Steve Atwater, and, for all of his talking, Shannon Sharpe. For most of the post Superbowl Mike Shanahan era, it seems that as long as someone could play technically sound football, they had a place on our team. Character traits were overlooked for numbers (Dale Carter, Daryl Gardener, Travis Henry – though he seems to be making a good effort to turn it around). Guys with attitude problems were welcomed if they could put up the stats (Javon). Sure, we'd like the guys who were leaders and had high character, and we'd have them on the team, but it wasn't a priority compared to their play. The final pick in a nine pick draft. KC will get a lot of credit for getting a lot of solid picks in this draft, but what else is to be expected of six picks on day one? Whe it comes right down to it, this pick for Denver is the "Mike Shanahan Approved" stamp that packages up this draft neatly and sends it off to training camp.
Shanny wants nothing more than to score TDs.
He knows he has the most important ingredient for success, a young QB with limitless talent and a drive to be the best. At this point it is all about building around Cutler. From LT to insurance on Henry to arguably the best center in the draft to a dynamic player who can single-handedly improve the Broncos starting field position by leaps and bounds, the Broncos are closer right now to scoring in the red zone than they were in over 25 trips insde the 20 last year.

I'm not much for giving grades, but I would say that so far the draft has stacked up in the A-B range. But this pick is the first that I really want to like but just can't get too enthusiastic about.
Its a shame too, because like HT I really like the safety position and would love to see Denver take it very seriously.
First off, this is the second pick that seems more suitable to a cover-2 type of defense. I suppose if Denver feels like the Jack Williams pick and this pick can outlive Champ and Bly's stay in Denver that they migh find more value instituting a cover-2 scheme. But this is a question for HT to address. I would just like to look at some of the things I like about Barrett and some of the things that bother me.
I like that he is a safety that can play well in the box, since I'm with Shanny that you need one safety up to stop the run (especailly with our great man corners) and that will free you up to back him off later and get after the QB once the...

There comes a time during a good Broncos game when a play goes horribly wrong. We all groan, kick the dog, throw a brick at the tv, or go out and drink our Zappa Juice. And then (like Death and Dying author Dr. Kubler-Ross says) we hit the next stage of grief and get depressed.
BUT WAIT! Coach Shanahan throws the red flag onto the field, and thousands of eyes shoot up to the replay screen in the sky!

We've gone through a draft with our eyes on the ball, many have felt kicked in the gut, but I'm about to make the argument that upon further review the Denver War Room had their eyes on the entire field and saw some things we missed. The first thing I did when I got ready to do this write-up on Larsen, was to go backand read everything I had on Wake Forest C, Steve Justice.
Say what?
I did that because I like the Larsen pick. He is a great ST addition who will be an immediate upgrade over many of our veteran journeymen who currently under-occupy the positions, and unlike them, he will have something to prove. Plus, I like the idea that we can challenge K2 without making a huge vote of "no confidence" in him, as a Lofton pick may have done. We are paying him after all.
My reasoning for looking at Justice, is that of all the players still on the board who stood to be gone by the time denver selected again, he was the one who I had always assumed would be a solid choice for Denver. The question wasn't whether he should have been selected instead of Larsen, but whether we should have passed on K-Lic (if you guys want me to stop using this nick for him, you better suggest something fast, ...

Regardless of how you rank our offseason needs, there is no doubt we had three critical issues to this teams success:
Score TDs in the redzone
Stop the run
Improve STs
As I peruse our 2008 draft class, I see just how deeply complex football is, as on the surface we seem to putting a lot of effort into #3 above, when I would probably rate it as a distant second to #2. But that is where the complexity lies. By addressing 3 you indirectly optimize 1 which in turn has an effect on 2 which improves 3 which...
I think you get the point.
And not to be overlooked in the drafting or non-drafting of a DT is the fundamentally flawed stature of this years DT class. Outside of Ellis and Dorsey (who I wil leave out of the discussion from here on out) there simply wasn't anyone that I felt the Bronco's absolutely must get. I have looked at more DTs this year than in any year of the draft, and I have extensie notes on 27 (!!!) DTs alone, making up almost a fifth...

If you have learned anyhting about these Denver Broncos it is that they don't mess up the RB picks. You don't know Jack.
And it is fairly debatable about whether you want to or not.
First, let's get the obvious out of the way. The guy is too small. At 5' 9" (generously) he comes to a team that won't draft elite safety help if their lives depended on it, and is guaranteed to be mismatched 9 times out of 10 in one on one coverages. I love D-Will, but I remember him being burned a lot in one on one scenarios against precise passers. He was at his best when the opposing QB was screwing up, where his tenaciousness made teams pay for their mistakes.
Which is something you see in J-Will as well. Tenaciousness. Fire. Competitiveness. You WILL see him in the mix at KR/PR. You WILL see him fly down the field with some of the best timed speed in the draft. You WILL see his willingness to work and his great team attitude. You WILL see a combination of strength and speed that is rare in a CB. And you WILL see a playe...

I didn't see this coming but I definitely love this pick.
This is another nasty Olineman with good instincts and versatility, and what really excites me is what he can bring to Denver's running game down the line: as a guard he had 184 knockdowns, 27 resulting in TDs. That's what I'm talking about.
When you factor in his effortless move to center, where he graded the highest among NCAA centers for his blocking (92 knockdowns in first year, 10 for TDs), you can understand why he was the highest ranked center going into 2007, but that leads you to ask: Why didn't he stay at the top?
He began 2007 by recording 96 knockdowns, and 16 were for TDs, and he did this through only nine games. He also added 6 other knockdowns that resulted in big plays (over 25 yards) and gave up only 1 sack through that time period. I'll just keep this short and sweet.
Going into the fourth round, Denver should see the last of the starter quality players coming off the board at the very deep classes of LB and RB. Dollars to doughnuts says they target either or both of these positions with their picks in the fourth round, in what is becoming a very solid and sound draft, predicated on maximizing the value of the pick.

Jonathan Goff, Vanderbilt : Smart, solid player. Fundamentally sound, if not terribly exciting.
Ali Highsmith, LSU: Projects as a SAM but has a great ability to keep himself clean and is very vocal and smart. Plays with a lot of heart and would be a great ST addition while he learns what kind of guy Al Wilson was...whoops. I swore to myself that I wouldn't mention Wilson.

The speculation is over, and the first day is done. No moves were made up or down as Denver felt comfortable picking at their given slots.
From a fan perspective this may have been a let down day. After returning home from a day of work I read the comments (all several hundred of them) and saw a lot of dissapointment. No movement up or down, and no flashy picks (we get an offensive lineman and a WR that wasn't on our radar screens).
From a coaching perspective, I think we did what made sense with our 1st round pick, and as I do more research I believe we got ourselves a steal in the 2nd. Do you need to be cheered up?

Before the draft I expressed my deisre for the Broncos to trade down. I kept hope alive all the way until Roger Goodell said Ryan Clady's name. It isn't that don't like Clady. Just the opposite. On MHR Radio the other night, I called Clady the safest pick for the Broncos if he was there, and by the sounds of Mike Shahahan he thought the same thing.
There were plenty of trades, which speaks to the sheer fluidity of this draft. That doesn't mean it is easy to get a deal done. It was becoming clear with all the movement around the Broncos that they weren't going to be able to get something done. At that point the Broncos had no choice but to punt and take the best fit.
Clady gives the Broncos something on the O-Line they haven't had in a long time. Natural, God-given talent. The Broncos have gotten so much out of guys drafted in the late round, so much over-achievement, that at some point you need to add real talent to the equation....
