Sport Sites: Sports Betting Tools
2009-04-08 09:47:00
I know many people who like to place the occasional sports wager, and I've come across a site with a great collection of betting tools to help you get a leg up on the bookie. The Half-Point Calculator in particular is very interesting, showing how often the final score for a baseball, basketball or football game will land on any single number. There are a ton of useful tools on this page, so play around with them a while and see how they can improve your sports betting....

Sport Sites: Baseball Prospectus
2009-04-06 09:37:00
Sabermetrics - in-depth statistical analysis of baseball - has become more and more popular in recent years. It used to be a topic discussed only by hardcore sports nerds, but now even ESPN broadcasters will occasionally mention a sabermetric statistic like OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage). My favorite sabermetrics site right now is Baseball Prospectus. They always have excellent analysis and projections, both for individual players and teams as a whole. Keep an eye on the site later in the season - one of their best features is the playoff odds report, which lets you know your team's exact chance of winning the World Series....

It's spring time, so you know what that means... it's baseball season! Over the next few weeks I'll be highlighting some of the best sport sites to follow America's pastime.I'll get things started with what should always be your first stop for baseball news and information: MLB.com. Here you'll find EVERYTHING you could ever want on a sports site - live scores, schedules, fantasy news, commentary, video highlights, etc....

Sport Sites: YOCO Hoops
2009-03-16 16:22:00
A few days ago, I recommended NY Times' Bracket Blog because of its wide variety of writers. Today I'm going to go the opposite route, and also recommend you check out one individual writer's blog, YOCO Hoops. This blog is the sole product of Yoni Cohen, and you can really tell that Cohen knows his stuff. It's easy to see why many experts consider his site to be the definitive college basketball blog. Like many sport sites, his blog gets pretty cluttered around this time of the year, but that's really my only (minor) complaint. I always check out Cohen's daily roundup, and the vast amount of additional information is impressive as well....

Sport Sites: Covers.com Injuries
2009-03-15 21:03:00
Having trouble keeping track of all the injuries in the NCAA men's basketball tourney? Then the injuries section of Covers.com may very well become one of your new favorite sport sites. Unlike most sport sites, Covers.com makes it easy to stay updated on the status of all the key players on your favorite teams. For some reason, nearly all other sport sites make it extremely difficult to find important injury updates, but Covers.com has made it unbelievably easy. Everything is located on one main page, and you can then click on individual players' names to get more information.Disclaimer: Information to be used for recreational purposes only....

Sport Sites: NY Times Bracket Blog
2009-03-14 20:30:00
The Madness is about to begin! I hope you're just as excited as I am. I have to jet quickly today, but here's another link for you: NY Times' Bracket Blog. Since pretty much all sport sites on the Internet have some form of blog covering March Madness, you might be wondering why I'd rather read the NY Times' blog. The main reason is, most of the major sport sites are not very diverse. A few featured writers get all the attention, and write all of the articles. But the NY Times, unlike most sport sites, has sent six writers to cover the men's basketball tournament, providing a good variety of insightful articles....

Sport Sites: KenPom.com
2009-03-13 23:54:00
Every March, anyone and everyone offers their thoughts on the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Writers on various sport sites use every conceivable technique to make their predictions, but most of them don't do any better than a random coin flip would. Yet there are some sport sites out there that provide some truly valuable information. KenPom.com is definitely one of these valuable sites. While his in-depth mathematical analysis may turn off some readers, Ken Pomeroy does a great job of explaining the reasoning and logic behind all of his numbers. Click over to his blog to find his "Bracket Breakdown," which shows every team's chances of advancing to each round of the tourney. These percentages provide a great starting point for filling out your bracket... they helped me finish second l...

Sport Sites: SportsPickle.com
2009-03-10 02:35:00
I've been an avid reader of SportsPickle.com for over two years now, so obviously they're doing something right. The site has been featured on numerous sport sites, including Sports Illustrated and ESPN.com. I especially like the site's T.I.R.S.H. section, which stands for "Today in Revisionist Sports History." Take today's entry for example:March 10, 1993 – The San Francisco Giants make Sherry Davis the first female public address announcer in sports history. The Giants stressed to Davis that she speak loudly so as to drown out all the men in the crowd below her yelling “show us your tits!”SportsPickle.com provides a fresh perspective on sports, especially compared to the very vanilla content of most sport sites. Just make sure to stay away from the Handicapper section, wher...

Sport Sites: Spring Training Online
2009-03-09 12:11:00
Yes, it's that time of year again. Spring training has arrived. But since many sport sites are currently focused on March Madness, it's often difficult to find quality, in-depth coverage of spring training. Luckily I found Spring Training Online. They have a huge collection of spring training information, including schedules, rosters, travel information, and history. Unfortunately this site doesn't have actual recaps or box scores for the spring training games, but you can find those at any of the big-name sport sites (ESPN, CBS Sportsline, etc.).Also, have you thought about going to sunny Florida or Arizona to watch some of your favorite team's spring training games? The atmosphere and environment are second to none, and it's a great way to scout out your team for the upcoming season. If ...

Sport Sites: March Madness on Demand
2009-03-01 12:36:00
Finally, the wait is over. The NCAA Selection Committee has done its job, and the field is set for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. To join in the fun, print off a bracket from any of the major sport sites and make your picks. Over the next few days, we'll highlight some of the best sport sites to turn to for help in filling out your bracket. But first we want to make sure that you'll actually be able to watch the games. Ater all, the first round of the tourney is often considered the most exciting two days of sports in the entire year. Unfortunately, however, the first round games will be played this Thursday and Friday, right in the middle of the work week. Luckily the NCAA and CBS Sports have once again teamed up to provide March Madness On Demand. Once you sign up for this FREE ser...
