State of the Bills Roster: Cornerbacks
2009-01-14 12:00:10
McKelvin has a bright future in Buffalo (Associated Press) The "State of the Bills Roster" series trucks on! If you're new around these parts within the past nine months or so, this series is an off-season progression of posts in which we'll break down Buffalo's roster in-depth. From these discussions, we'll put together a "Community Needs List" in priority order, then begin researching potential free agent and draft acquisitions that will satisfy all of the Bills' needs as we perceive them. We continue our foray into heavy-duty off-season work at Buffalo Rumblings right now. It's our "State of the Roster" series, off-season mode, and we'll continue the discussions by breaking down the Bills' situation at outside linebacker, a position that is still an area of need for the Bills.   Previous installments: QB :: RB :: TE :: WR :: OT :: G/C :: DE :: DT :: MLB :: OLB   New: Prioritized Offensive Needs List Opening statement I'm a bit dazed and confused here, folks. Why? Wel...

Does Andre Reed belong in the Hall of Fame?
2009-01-13 19:32:16
The Hall of Fame Finalists At least four candidates must be elected from the 17 listed but the total class cannot number more than seven.  In order to be elected they must receive 80% of a yes/no vote.  Here is the complete list of finalists: Bruce Smith, DE; Rod Woodson, DB; Shannon Sharpe, TE; John Randle, DE; Dermonti Dawson, C; Cortez Kennedy, DT; Cris Carter, WR; Andre Reed, WR; Richard Dent, DE; Russ Grimm, OL; Bob Kuechenberg, OL; Randall McDaniel, OL; Derrick Thomas, LB; Paul Tagliabue, Commissioner; Ralph Wilson, Buffalo Bills Owner; Claude Humphrey, DE; Bob Hayes, WR. Last week, I posted the career accomplishments of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. and debated his worthiness for the Hall of Fame. He founded the Bills as an original AFL franchise and helped the AFL and later the NFL grow to new hieghts.  Today we look at Andre Reed and his candidacy. Reed's Legacy According to ESPN's Tim Graham, Reed is "a lightning rod for Hall of Fame debate."  We saw h...

Buffalo Rumblings Community Needs List, Take Two
2009-01-13 13:00:08
Over the past few weeks we here at Buffalo Rumblings have immersed ourselves in the grueling off-season process of figuring out exactly where and how the Buffalo Bills need to improve to make a playoff push in 2009. This effort, currently in its initial phase dubbed our State of the Roster series, will eventually culminate in the assembly of a prioritized Community Needs List, where every single need the Bills carry into the 2009 off-season will be made known to those who run the franchise. (At least, that would be awesome.) In case you missed it, we have already completed prioritization of Buffalo's needs offensively. I'm the kind of guy that is obsessed with organization and being on the same page as everybody else. So unlike last year, when we ripped through our State of the Roster series and threw our Needs List together once those reviews were finished, this year we're going to keep our Needs List a work in progress as we work through the positional reviews. Thus, we'll b...

Kurupt's weekly plea for pass rush help
2009-01-12 12:27:13
Good day all.  In this week's edition of Kurupt's desire for a pass rush overhaul, we will be assisted by Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News.  Thanks for stopping by today, Mark.  Your information is greatly appreciated. The Bills finished 14th in the NFL in both yards allowed and points allowed. That was a big improvement from 2007, when the Bills were 31st in yards allowed and 18th in points allowed. However, the No. 14 ranking does not tell the whole story. The defensive improvement in yardage allowed was nice on paper, but really, it didn't help us become that much better of a defense.  Going from 18th to 14th in points allowed was a negligible change, as we allowed 354 points in 2007 and 342 this past year.  That's not much of a difference at all, my sources indicate.  Digging a little deeper, the stats really aren't that much better: In 2007, the atrocious Bills run defense allowed 124.6 ypg, 4.4 ypc, and 15 TDs.  How much of an improvement did ...

State of the Bills Roster: Middle Linebackers

Open Thread: NFL Division Playoffs, Day 2
2009-01-11 10:30:06
Well, well, well.  Yesterday was fun, wasn't it?  You'll be hard-pressed to find another day of NFL playoff action in which two teams slug each other out until the final moments when a rookie quarterback leads a game-winning drive for the road team, and then a road team that no one expects to compete completely manhandles an NFL powerhouse.  That's exactly what happened yesterday when the Ravens beat the Titans 13-10 and the surprising Cardinals smoked the Panthers 33-13.  Two fun games to watch (at least until Jake Delhomme's interceptions got a little too Losman-esque to stomach). It might get even better in today's matchups... &...

Open Thread: NFL Division Playoffs, Day 1
2009-01-10 12:02:06
The 2009 NFL Divisional playoffs are upon us!  What, you're not excited?  Yeah, me either.  Being a Buffalo Bills fan will do that to you - we haven't tasted playoff football in nearly a decade.  I've forgotten that flavor. Still, good football is good football, and at least one of today's matchups is sure to be exactly the type of football I love watching.  Good defense rules. Care to make a prediction about today's games?  I know I am, even though I only correctly predicted one of last week's four wild card games.  Who says you can't play the game if you stink at it?  I'm diving in head-first again this weekend, starting with today's two matchups.    Baltimore Ravens (12-5) at Tennessee Tita...
