How Many ACC Games Will UNC Win This Season?
2012-01-04 08:58:14
Now that UNC has finished up the non-conference slate with a tidy 13-2 mark, our attention now turns to the sixteen game ACC docket. Based on the past 10 weeks or so of basketball it is painfully clear the ACC is extremely weak as a conference. Currently it is looking like at probably four bids in the NCAA Tournament with only UNC, Duke and Virginia showing any real interest in winning on a consistent basis versus good competition. The relative weakness of the league means if there was ever a season UNC could probably run the conference table this one is probably it random losses notwithstanding. Historically UNC has gone undefeated in ACC regular season play three times: 1957, 1984 and 1987. In all three of those cases UNC went 14-0. Since the ACC moved to sixteen games with the addition of Florida St in 1992, only one team has gone 16-0 and that was Duke in 1999 in a year where the ACC was probably as weak as it is right now. The ACC only put three teams in the NCAA Tournament that s...

Duke Would Be Well Advised Not To Overlook Temple
2012-01-04 07:27:25
Duke tips off its final non conference game prior to the start of ACC play and they are doing so on the road against Temple.  Looking at Temple (9-3) there is nothing that stands out about the Owls. They don't have any wins over ranked teams and their best win might be over a down Villanova team. But make no mistake it would be wise for Duke to overlook them.  Duke taking this Temple team lightly is like is like me trying to play casino games, a losing effort, click here for more info on that.. Duke didn't fair too well the last time they played a true road game, and while the Owls aren't Ohio State but a true road game isn't meant to be easy.  Temple has given Duke fits in past years when they weren't suppose to be a challenge and having this game in Philadelphia  only helps the Owls chances. Duke is going to have to bring their A game and I'm certain Mike Krzyzewski will be demanding focus after to easy wins at home after a long break. With a young team it is ...

ACC Morning Linkfest 1/4
2012-01-04 06:29:16
Would you have overturned Danny Coale's TD catch in overtime?  I'm not sure I saw the evidence to overturn it, but I am wearing my ACC glasses.  If you missed it, Virginia Tech's Logan Thomas threw a ball on 3rd and 11 in the first overtime to Danny Coale who made a spectacular one handed diving catch.  The TD would have put Virginia Tech in a  really good place to win the Sugar Bowl as the Hokies seemingly had held Michigan's offense all night.  Unfortunately, the play was reviewed, overturned, and the Hokies' backup kicker (who was 4/4 on the night) missed the go ahead and field goal.  Virginia Tech saw their season end with a 23-20 loss to Michigan. Georgia Tech failed miserably last night to big up a big non-conference against Alabama.  While I had high hopes for Georgia Tech this season, it was largely because I thought Brandon Reed would bring 14-15 points per game to go along with Glen Rice Jr.  Unfortunat...

Fedora's Staff Officially Introduced at UNC
2012-01-04 06:10:30
Larry Fedora announced his coaching staff for 2012 at a press conference on Tuesday, and for the most part has kept the Southern Mississippi band together. Of the eight coaches introduced, six were on Fedora’s staff at USM and the seventh has worked with Fedora before. The six coaches named Tuesday who are coming with Fedora from Hattiesburg are: defensive coordinator Dan Disch; defensive assistant and special teams coordinator David Duggan; defensive line coach Deke Adams; offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Blake Anderson; tight ends coach Walt Bell; and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic. The other two coaches are: Vic Koenning, who will be the assistant head coach for defense. He comes to UNC from Illinois, where he was defensive coordinator and interim head coach for the Illini’s bowl game. He previously was the defensive coordinator at Clemson and is the only coach to have not worked with Fedora previously; and Gunter Brew...

A Tale of Two Scores from January 2nd
2012-01-03 19:42:17
Last night, two of the ACC games that took place ended in nearly identical scores.  Yet, the scores indicated a vastly different seasonal storyline for the two conference teams participating. UVA enjoyed a nice hard fought road win over a decent LSU team, 57-52, while Wake Forest suffered a home loss to a then 7 up and 6 down Wofford Terriers, 56-52.  (I won’t even mention the fact that I had to watch the UVA/LSU game on ESPN3, because TCN, the Comcast Network, decided the Wofford/Wake Forest game was more important.  Oh wait, I guess I just did mention it.  Don’t worry Comcast.  I’m sure the people in Richmond, VA, one of your channels major markets and only an hour from Charlottesville, weren’t really that interested in watching a ranked team play against a 10-3 team from the SEC.  I can see completely how a game featuring two teams from a different state, one of whom is coming off their worst season in recent memory would capture...

Duke Back in the Mix For Amile Jefferson
2012-01-03 08:42:33
Word on the street is Duke is back in the game for 2012 power forward Amile Jefferson.  Several reports on Twitter and various recruiting web sites are reporting that the Blue Devils are entering the race for the 6 foot 8 inch 197 lbs. Philadelphia product. Jefferson is reportedly considering several other big-time programs as well as a few ACC rivals like Maryland and NC State. Jefferson is a four star forward who adds to Duke's growing list of big man targets that already include Tony Parker and Ricardo Gathers. This continues in the Blue Devils recruiting trend of casting a wide net for a specific position or type of player. Jefferson is significant smaller in frame than either Parker or Gathers. Both of those prospects are bangers in the post. Jefferson appears to be more of an athletic slasher than a low block banger. There really isn't enough information to determine what this new development means. It could very well mean that Mike Krzyzewski and his staff aren't feeling...

ACC Morning Linkfest 1/3
2012-01-03 06:23:04
It would seem that ACC Basketball is at a low that I haven't seen in my lifetime.  On Monday, Boston College lost to Rhode Island and Wake Forest lost to Wofford.  Both teams were playing on their home courts.  Sure, BC and Wake are the bottom dwellers of the ACC this season and I'll even give you that its not that surprising that they lost these games.  The fact that it isn't surprising is sure depressing though.  Jeff Bzdelik's postgame quote sums it up nicely, “You know what, I’ve done a horse crap job — and you can write that.  I’ve done a horse crap job getting my team motivated and disciplined on both the offensive and defensive end. And somehow I’ve done a horse crap job of getting them to rebound the basketball. Throw it all on me.” Virginia went to LSU and won a game that should help prepare the Cavaliers for conference play.  Going on the road against LSU's tough defense and making w...

Donte Paige-Moss To Enter NFL Draft
2012-01-02 20:57:25
Via Inside Carolina North Carolina junior defensive end Donte Paige-Moss has notified the school of his intention to enter the NFL Draft, according to a UNC official. Paige-Moss, who posted 29 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss in a backup role in 2011, tore the ACL in his right knee during the Independence Bowl last week. The Jacksonville, N.C. native had his biggest year in 2010, starting 12 games and recording 49 tackles, 13.5 tackles for losses of 77 yards and 7.0 sacks. Paige-Moss was a five-star recruit and All-American out of high school, but made headlines with a couple off-the-field issues during his freshman year. A month after enrolling in 2009, he was charged with misdemeanor simple assault following an altercation with a teammate, though the charge was dropped and he was disciplined internally. In the 2009 regular season finale against NC State, a post-game altercation led to him being suspended by then-head coach Butch Davis for the team’s bowl game. Thi...

Virginia Tech, Clemson Hold the ACC's Reputation in their Hands
2012-01-02 16:13:46
It’s been a rough bowl season for the ACC… again. The conference is sitting at 2-4 in the bowl season, and as SouthernTimeGirlsandSports writes it’s now or never for the ACC. I can’t disagree. Florida State came through with a hard fought win over Notre Dame and NC State took care of business against Louisville, and that’s pretty much it. I felt Virginia and Wake Forest would be overmatched against Auburn and Mississippi St, so my harshest criticism goes to North Carolina and Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels played and were coached like they weren’t even aware they were in a bowl game against Missouri. There was a complete lack of pride and in a disappointing performance. Georgia Tech’s loss to Utah might have been even harder to swallow. The Jackets blew a 24-10 4th qtr lead with under 7 minutes to play. It may have been the single worst series of play calls I ever seen Paul Johnson make. His tentative play calling doomed the Jacket...
