Minnesota Wild GM Doug Risebrough told John Shipley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he would make a roster move, including a trade, if a young player “demands” a spot. The Wild have a number of “minor leaguers and a few veteran free agents” fighting for one roster spot.

Vyborny wants long-term deal with Blue Jackets
2007-08-04 17:36:45
Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports that Columbus Blue Jackets forward David Vyborny would like to sign a multi-year contract extension with the club.
rumormethisCopyright
“I’ve talked to David and I’ve talked to his agent, Rich Winter,” general manager Scott Howson said. “David has expressed an interest in staying in Columbus for the long term. That was nice to hear.”
Winter confirms Vyborny’s desire to remain with the Blue Jackets.
“David has made a decision that he’d like to stay in Columbus as long as the Blue Jackets would like to have him,” Winter said.
So, what type of term is Vyborny looking for?
“At least one year, and no more than 10,” Winter joked.
Don’t expect a signing anytime soon, though. Howson, the newly hired GM, says he needs some time to get a feel for his team and players before he commits to anything. It may not be until “the midpoint of this season” that ...

Islanders want to add defenseman, center
2007-08-04 17:05:49
Newsday’s Greg Logan reports that New York Islanders GM Garth Snow intends to add a veteran defenseman and an offensive center before training camp opens in mid-September.
rumormethisCopyright
While blueliners such as Danny Markov, Andy Sutton or Ossi Vaananen are still on the free agent market, Logan notes that Snow is unwilling to overpay “for a player who might be solid but not necessarily a fit worth a major commitment.”
So, that leaves the trade route. Logan suggests that Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe may be the best blueliner to target since Toronto “is anxious to dump” him. With a no-movement clause in his contract McCabe has the option to veto any trade, but “likely wouldn’t have a problem waiving it to return to a team that wants his talents.”
Logan insists that the Maple Leafs would have to sweeten the deal to rid themselves of McCabe’s salary cap hit, since he still has four years and $21.6 million remaining on ...

Forsberg not negotiating with NHL teams
2007-08-04 16:34:39
Unrestricted free agent forward Peter Forsberg told Finnish media on Thursday that he hasn’t had any contract discussions with any NHL clubs this off-season, according to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post.
rumormethisCopyright
Forsberg, who was speaking from a charity hockey game in Helsinki, told reporters that he has not even made up his mind on whether he will play in the NHL this season.
Even tough his surgically repaired ankle is feeling “good” at the moment, the Swedish forward would like to test it out and make sure it is “healthy enough to withstand the rigors of an NHL season” before deciding on his playing future.
Recent speculation has the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings being among a number of teams very much interested in acquiring Forsberg’s services.
The Avalanche have about $5.6 million left to spend under the salary cap, while the Red Wings have between approximately $4 and $6 million.

Markov done with Red Wings, off to Russia?
2007-08-04 00:58:34
The Windsor Star’s Dave Waddell reports that unrestricted free agent forward Danny Markov is not likely to re-sign with the Detroit Wings">Red Wings.
rumormethisCopyright
While Red Wings GM Ken Holland tells Waddell the club remains interested in the Russian blueliner, he admits that Markov’s asking price is more than they are willing to pay.
The Red Wings are said to be offering “a short-term deal” at around $2.5 million. Markov is believed to be seeking a long-term deal in the $3 million per season range.
“Money more than term is the problem,” Holland said. “We’d love to have him back, but he’s still just sitting out there.”
Now it appears the Holland may have some competition for Markov. Word coming out of Russia is that Russian Elite League team Salavat Yulayev has offered Markov a one-year, $1.7 million deal.
One defenseman the Red Wings are sure to sign is restricted free agent Derek Meech.

“Patrice is a seasoned veteran who brings a vast experience at the NHL level. His presence adds depth to our group of defensemen,” said Bob Gainey.
While no financial terms have been released yet, reports surfaced last week that the Canadiens were interested in bring back Brisebois and had offered $700,000 per season.
The 36-year-old blueliner spent the last two season with the Colorado Avalanche, where he scored 11 goals and recorded 38 assists in 113 games. Prior to that, Brisebois spent the first 14 seasons of his career with the Canadiens.

Offer sheet bonanza to continue?
2007-08-03 21:04:14
Count Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland as one of those who believe that the NHL will see a rise in offer sheets being tendered to restricted free agents, according to The Vancouver Sun.
rumormethisCopyright
Holland thinks that the league’s new salary cap system “is forcing teams to become more predatory” in their attempts to acquire talent.
“I think what you’re seeing this summer is how the salary cap world is going to work,” Holland said.
Holland goes on to say that management will have to change their “approach if they don’t want their pool of budding stars to get picked over.”
“If you have a premier RFA, you better address it. If not, you’re opening yourself up.”
However, Gerry Johannson, the agent for Edmonton Oilers forward Dustin Penner told The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson that he does not believe the RFA offer sheets will be as prevalent some some would suggest.

TSN is reporting that New York Islanders forward Trent Hunter has received a one-year, $1.55 million deal for next season from an arbitrator on Friday.
rumormethisCopyright
The Islanders now have 48 hours to accept or decline the arbitrator’s decision. If the club decides to walk away from the ruling, Hunter will become an unrestricted free agent.
However, it’s expected that the Islanders — who have plenty of salary cap space to work with — will accept the ruling.
The 27-year-old Hunter scored 20 goals and recorded 15 assists last season, while earning $1 million.

2007-08-03 18:22:03
Toronto Maple Leafs John Ferguson Jr. tells Blair McCarron of the Toronto Sun that he is not shopping forward Matt Stajan.
rumormethisCopyright
Meanwhile, Ferguson says contract negotiations with unrestricted free agent forward Mike Peca are still ongoing. The Maple Leafs GM expects to talk with Peca’s agent in the next few days.
Craig Custance of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Atlanta Thrashers Don Waddell has no intentions of trading impending UFA Marian Hossa. Waddell is actually trying to re-sign the All-Star forward.
“There’s no timetable, no rush.” Waddell said last week about the Hossa negotiations.
Dustin Penner’s agent, Gerry Johannson, denies reports that his client would have accepted a two-year, $4 million deal from the Ducks if offered, according to Eric Stephens of the Los Angeles Times.

Re-signing Getzlaf, Perry now a priority for Ducks
2007-08-03 18:04:10
In light of losing Dustin Penner to the Edmonton Oilers via an offer sheet, Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke tells Dan Wood of The Orange County Register that he is now concentrating on getting pending RFA forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry signed to contract extensions.
rumormethisCopyright
“Certainly, my plan is to sign them,” Burke said. “By not matching this offer, we’re in better position to do that.”
Gerry Johannson, the agent for Getzlaf, tells Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal that he would be more than willing to begin negotiating a new deal for his client with the Ducks.
“If the Ducks called today to negotiate an extension for Ryan Getzlaf, we would definitely return that phone call. When you see (fellow Group II players) Zach Parise just sign an extension a year before his contract is up and Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh do the same, I see teams trying to take care of their restricted players earlier. I see that happening more (than of...

Kings, Cammalleri finished with arbitration, now wait
2007-08-03 16:09:40
Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports that a decision in Mike Cammalleri’s arbitration case may come as early as Friday, or Saturday at the latest.
rumormethisCopyright
The Los Angeles Kings restricted free agent forward spent Thursday in Toronto at a hearing before an arbitrator where the value of his contract for at least next season will be determined.
Since the the Kings and Cammalleri could not agree on a new deal before the hearing, they had to engage in a process that club President and General Manager Dean Lombardi was glad to be done with.
“I survived,” said Lombardi.
“It’s just a grueling process,” Lombardi said.
“It wears you out. Nothing has changed in the process from pre-lockout. It’s not fun for either side.”
As we reported last week, negotiations between the two sides have been progressing at a slow pace. In fact, Cammalleri said that he was yet to receive an offer from the Kings, something Lombardi is...

Lightning to move Craig if arbitration award too high?
2007-08-03 15:46:44
Tampa Bay Lightning GM Jay Feaster told Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times on Thursday that forward Ryan Craig could be traded should he receive a higher-than-expected salary during arbitration.
rumormethisCopyright
“We’ve been pretty honest with his agent in terms of where it has to fit for us,” Feaster said Wednesday.
Feaster goes on to say that although he is “communicating and talking” with Craig’s representatives, he is not close to signing the restricted free agent.
“I’m not overly optimistic right now.”
Word is that the Lightning have offered a three-year deal at $750,000 per season, while Craig’s camp have countered with a two-year deal at $1 million per.
However, once the two sides head into arbitration on Friday in Toronto, those number will change. Cristodero expects Craig to “ask for one year at about $1.2-million,” and the Lightning to reduce their offer to $650,000.
Should Craig rece...

Wisniewski, Meech, and Penner
2007-08-02 18:31:57
Chicago Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon tells Tim Sassone of the Chicago Daily Herald that the team is closing in on a new contract with restricted free agent defenseman James Wisniewski.
rumormethisCopyright
“That will get done shortly,” Tallon said.
Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland tells Ansar Khan of mLive.com that he has offered restricted free agent defenseman Derek Meech one-, two-, and three-year deals.
“We’re close, but he’s not done,” Holland said.
Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal reports that the Anaheim Ducks and Dustin Penner were holding preliminary contract negotiations before the forward received an offer sheet from the Edmonton Oilers.
Sources indicate that Penner was willing to sign a two-year, $4 million deal if the Ducks had made such an offer. However, discussions never reached that level.

Ducks to let Penner become Oiler?
2007-08-02 18:15:40
Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke has until Thursday at 2:05 PM EST to make up his mind, but according to Ray Slover of The Sporting News he will not match the offer sheet tendered to Dustin Penner by the Edmonton Oilers.
rumormethisCopyright
Among the chief reasons is the team’s development: the Ducks are in need of draft picks. If the Ducks don’t match the offer, they will receive the the Oilers’ first-, second- and third-round picks in next summer’s NHL Entry Draft.
Also taken into consideration is that Burke wants to maintain the Ducks’ salary structure and overall budget. Accepting Penner’s offer would also put the Ducks over the salary cap.
However, TSN is reporting that if Burke can clear some cap room, he will go ahead and retain Penner.
Contacted today, one of Penner’s representatives tells Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal that they haven’t received any news, one way or the other, yet.

Senators could face tumultuous times next summer
2007-08-02 16:46:59
Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports that the Ottawa Senators could be facing some drastic changes next summer.
rumormethisCopyright
The Senators will have five players set to become unrestricted free agents, including forwards Dany Heatley, Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly, and Shean Donovan as well as defenseman Wade Redden. With forward Jason Spezza a pending restricted free agent, the Senators will have a large core of their team to re-sign in a year’s time.
The fear in Ottawa is that they will not have the funds to retain their key UFAs, especially their back-to-back 50-goal scorer, Heatley. More than that, with the Edmonton Oilers going on an offer-sheet binge this off-season, teams may follow suit and do the same with Spezza.
“There’s only one team that has made offer sheets, but yes, a guy like Jason is certainly a candidate for that,” said Senators GM Bryan Murray.
Brennan suggests that with Mats Sundin off the books at year’s end, the Toronto Maple...

Red Wings want to pull the trigger, but can’t find right target
2007-08-02 16:05:41
Detroit Wings">Red Wings GM Ken Holland tells Ansar Khan of mLive.com that he would like to add a top-six forward and some depth on defense.
rumormethisCopyright
With between $4 and $6 million in salary cap space, the Red Wings could make some substantial additions to their roster. No moves are imminent at this time, though.
Holland is yet to find a forward that fits the skill level required, and under the salary range he would like.
“No one on the open market excites us; some we have interest in, but not at the money they’re seeking,” Holland said. “Right now, we’d have a lot of money at the trade deadline.”
As for bolstering his defense, Holland admits to speaking with Danny Markov’s agent about a contract. However, the former Red Wing and unrestricted free agent is looking for more money than Holland is willing to offer.
According to Khan, Holland’s offer of $2.5 million per season he put forth at last month’s NHL Entry Draft has ...

Rangers pleased with Avery decision
2007-08-01 23:14:26
TSN is reporting on their website that an arbitrator has awarded New York Rangers forward Sean Avery a one-year deal worth $1.9 million.
rumormethisCopyright
That is $700,000 less than the restricted free agent asked for in his arbitration hearing last Monday in Toronto, and $600,000 more than the Rangers were offering. Avery earned $1.1 million last season.
While the Rangers harshly criticized Avery in their arbitration brief, the club appears to be in good spirits about the decision handed down.
“We are pleased to have Sean under contract and are looking forward to him returning with the same passion and enthusiasm he brought to our team last year,” Rangers general manager Glen Sather said in a release. “He is a terrific competitor, who we expect to play a significant role in a successful season.”
The only question remains whether the bitter words used by the Rangers to describe Avery in this ugly process has soured the feisty forward on the Blue Shirts.

2007-08-01 22:42:41
Chicago Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon tells Tim Sassone of the Chicago Daily Herald that he is still very much interested in making some adjustments to his roster.
rumormethisCopyright
With approximately $7 million left to spend under the salary cap, the Blackhawks could make some significant additions, although Tallon may only want to tinker with his roster.
Either way, Tallon admits that he is looking to bring in some “more grit at wing and on defense” before training camps begins in September.
Nothing is imminent, however. Far from it. Tallon expects it will get busier as camps open.
