What are we expecting from Andy LaRoche in ‘09?
2009-02-04 21:07:10
Big things, which doesn’t seem to be valid based on his line in 2008:
Yeah, so that’s not pretty. So why the optimism? Well, first, it can’t get much worse. Second, there were a lot of things working against him last year that will (hopefully) be non factors in 2009. Third, minor league stats indicate he [...]...

Vote for Romulo!
2009-02-04 10:44:23
A relatively new Pirates blog, [Sitting in the North Shore Notch] has begun a grassroots campaign to make Romulo Sanchez the winner of the fan vote bobblehead on Pirates.com.
Why Romulo? Well, we already have ones for most of the key players, and as Eron says, “it’s time to give the no name bullpen pitchers some [...]...

Slow day
2009-02-03 20:36:08
Not much going on today…[the Orioles signed Ty Wigginton] and that’s about it.
We were down at the Steelers parade today (front row) and had a blast. Can’t wait to be back for the Pirates parade in November.
10 days until pitchers and catchers…...

Oliver Perez signs…
2009-02-02 16:44:42
[with the Mets, meaning that they likely won't be bringing back Pedro Martinez]. As we know, the Pirates are known to be interested in Martinez and the Mets seemed to be one of our biggest blockades due to their enormous assets. I’ve said that I would support signing Pedro: he brings a big flashy name [...]...

WOOOOOOOO!!
2009-02-01 22:14:45
Only 11 days until pitchers and catchers report! Yeah baby!
Seriously: CONGRATS STEELERS!
Here’s hoping for a similar celebration in October/November *tries to keep a straight face.*...

Pirates Stuff? This Weekend?
2009-01-31 17:24:04
Yeah right.
The MLB even concedes this weekend to the NFL: [MLB.com is liveblogging the Super Bowl]. Huh????
I’d say it’s pretty safe to say that one of said league’s least popular teams, especailly one that happens to play a parking lot away from a Super Bowl participant, will not be breaking a ton of news this [...]...

T.J. Beam DFA’d? Why?
2009-01-30 21:47:01
To open up a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly acquired Eric Hinske, [the Pirates designated pitcher T.J. Beam for assignment].
That means the Bucs have 10 days to release, trade, or waive Beam. They will likely waive him, and I would be shocked if nobody claims him off waivers.
Beam wasn’t spectacular last year [...]...

Getting to know Eric Hinske
2009-01-30 15:31:59
As of 2:00 PM today, Eric Hinske is officially your newest Pittsburgh Pirate. As expected, plenty of fans are disappointed [that Doug Mientkiewicz likely won't return now], but Hinske is hopeful he can take on a similar role:
“I am that type of player,” Hinske replied. “When I walk on the field, I’m out there to [...]...

Bucs agree to terms with Eric Hinske
2009-01-29 16:37:53
Nice pickup, in my opinion. It’s a one year deal, and the base salary should be around $1.5M, [according to DK].
Hinske will fill a bench role, and he can play 1B, 3B, LF and RF. He hit 20 HR’s last year with Tampa in a similar role, which is pretty impressive.
He’s not as fiery and [...]...

Maholm agrees to deal (updated)
2009-01-29 07:19:57
It’s a three year deal, with a club option for the fourth. This will avoid a salary arbitration issue in which the teams were $1.15M apart. The dollar figures are not yet available. Maholm was already under the team’s control for the next 3 years, so this is just a matter of either saving or [...]...
