| 2008-08-03 18:18:00 |
The Old-Timer's Day ceremony was great thought Mattingly, Bernie, Sparky and others could not attend but overall a nice event for the fans.ON THE MOUND:Mike Mussina was the Yankees stopper today, and picked up his 14th win of th year. He was brilliant and had the red-hot Angels' hitters off-balance all day. He mixed speeds as well as he has all year, and had great command of all his pitches. In seven innings pitched Mussina allowed one earned run on two hits, walked two, and struck out five. He also retired the final 17 batters he faced. The two runs shouldn't have scored; Mussina got what should have been an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. But it was screwed up by everyone who touched the ball, and the Angels had their two runs. Officially it was a throwing error on Betemit, but Giambi sh...

| Angels outduel Yanks in 1-0 win |
| 2008-08-01 16:41:00 |
ON THE MOUND:The bombers got 7 innings of shutout baseball from Sidney Ponson , and still could not come away with a win against the mighty Angels of Anaheim. Ponson did walk four, but held the Angels to just two hits. He was also helped out by several nice defensive plays on hard hit balls, but he still gave the Yankees a great performance tonight, earned at least one more start in pinstripes, and deserved a win.Damaso Marte looked very good in his inning of work; he struck out two of the three batters he faced.Mariano Rivera in save situations has a 0.33 ERA, and he's allowed just 12 hits in 27.1 IP, and in non-save situations he's 4-4, with a 3.00 ERA, and he's allowed 18 hits in 21 IP. | 2008-08-01 16:41:00 |
The Angels outplayed the Yanks in every face of the game, and rolled to an easy 12-6 win, their fourth in a row. They really look like the best team in baseball. They hit, they pitch, they run, and they can field the ball, and they're very well managed.ON THE MOUND:Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees and got shelled. It was one of his worst two starts of the year (The other being the game he gave up ten runs to the Royals on 6/7.). In 5.1 innings pitched Pettitte allowed 9 runs on 11 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 4. Two of the hits were 3-run home runs off the bats of Torii Hunter and Juan Rivera, that both came in the 3rd inning.Recently recalled, Chris Britton relieved Pettitte in the 6th, and was just as bad. | Injury Status: Wang comeback unlikely |
| 2008-07-30 19:47:00 |
From Lisa Kennelly:When Chien-Ming Wang suffered his foot injury last month, the Yankees held out hope he could return in September. That's looking nearly impossible.Wang, who sprained the Lisfranc ligament and partially tore a tendon in his right foot while running the bases on June 15, had his cast removed Tuesday. But he still expects to be on crutches for a week, when he will be reevaluated. If all is well, he could begin rehab but won't be able to start throwing until he finishes rehabbing the foot. It should take 5-6 weeks to get him into game form, which puts his projected return up against the end of the season.I was sad to see him go but injuries do happen. | With the acquisiton of Nady, Posada may have surgery |
| 2008-07-27 18:02:00 |
From Ed Price:With Xavier Nady on the Yankees, Jorge Posada can look toward 2009 and Johnny Damon can savor some time as a designated hitter.Posada, whose damaged right shoulder prohibits him from catching, was going to try to strengthen the shoulder and spend the remainder of this season as a first baseman or DH.After yesterday's trade for Nady, the Yankees no longer have an opening. And since Posada will need at least six months to work back after the surgery, it seems prudent to have it now so there's a chance he is ready to catch in spring training next year. The Yankees yesterday were not ready to commit to that plan."If we feel we have enough pieces, he might not have to delay the surgery," general manager Brian Cashman said, "and that's something we...

From Ken Davidoff:The Yankees are working with Bernie Williams to ensure that the centerfielder, who left the team with hard feelings after the 2006 season, says a public goodbye to Yankee Stadium this season. The team invited Williams to Oldtimers Day on Aug. 2. For now, Williams has declined because of a long-planned vacation with his family. Club officials are holding out hope that he will change his mind this week.Nevertheless, if Williams isn't honored on Oldtimers Day, he will be on some other appropriate occasion. If it isn't an entire day dedicated to Williams, then there will be some sort of public acknowledgment that will give the fans a chance to thank Williams. There clearly were hurt feelings and anger on both si...

| Lucky Number 7 |
| 2008-07-25 17:00:00 |
ON THE MOUND:In 7 innings Joba allowed no runs on three hits (all singles) and a walk, while striking out nine. Joba also retired the last 10 batters he faced. He threw 103 pitches on the night, 69 of them for strikes. He's pitched well as a starter, but this was by far his best performance. This was the first time since Mel Stottlemyre in 1964 that a Yankees starter 22 or younger won a game at Fenway Park.Once again, Joba threw up and in to Kevin Youkilisand knocked him on his butt. This is the third time he's thrown in to, or at, Youkilis. The pitch was up near his chin, and ricocheted off Youkilis' bat, but with nobody out in the 7th of a 1-0 game and a 2-0 count, you have to believe this time it wasn't on purpose. Anyway, he eventually struck an angry Youkilis out on several nasty slid...

| Yanks reach deal with Sexson |
| 2008-07-18 17:47:00 |
From ESPN :The New York Yankees have reached a tentative agreement with Richie Sexson, who was released by the Seattle Mariners a week ago.Sexson fits in New York because the Yankees needed a right-handed slugger to match up against left-handed pitching -- and Sexson had a .344 average against lefties this year.Assuming the deal is completed, he'll be in the lineup Saturday against Oakland. The Yankees will only have to pay Sexson the prorated minimum of $390,000 from his $14 million salary with the Mariners. Seattle is eating the remainder of the nearly $6 million Sexson is owed for the season.Yanks have nothing to lose by this signing. Hopefully he can continue to hit well against lefties and provide a solid right-handed bat off the bench. If not, release him....
