The Ray Handley All-Stars
2008-06-28 08:13:57
It should be noted that while all of you are busy voting on an All-time Giants team and its head coach, Big Blue View has been working behind the scenes on a special project we know all of you will enjoy. I am proud to stand here on stage at the Motel 6 in Weehawken, NJ and present to you The All-Time Worst Giants Team. This was no easy task to assemble all of these players, but we've managed to do it. When naming a head coach, there seemed to be only one man for the job, and that would be former head coach and famous card-counter Ray Handley. Ray couldn't be with us tonight, but when BBV called to congratulate him, upon hearing the good news, he remarked "Who the @*^& is this? How the @%$* did you get this number? What the  $%$@ is Big Blue View? &%$# off!!!!!!" Ray's a big kidder, always with the jokes. We know he is proud of the team we've assembled Here are some of the guidelines we followed for putting this team together: 1. This list is based solely on the player's per...

Toomer granted spot, now who joins him?
2008-06-27 21:45:54
By popular demand (an overwhelming 52-3 vote) we are conceding a spot on our All-Time Team to Amani Toomer. So, now we start the vote over again for the second wide receiver on the team. Vote in the poll for the receiver who will join Toomer. Poll Who should be the second wide receiver on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team? Tiki Barber - Hall of Fame?
2008-06-27 15:02:50
This discussion has been brought up before in other forums, but I'm not sure if it's hit here at BBV.  There's obviously a little bad blood and hurt feelings between some Giants fans and players regarding Tiki Barber, but looking back at his career I think it's valid question to wonder whether Tiki Barber is worthy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  This might even seem like a crazy premise, until you consider Eric Dickerson has already been enshrined, so really anything could happen.  In full disclosure, I was and still am a huge Tiki Barber fan.  I was rooting for him while he was a Virginia Cavalier, and I was thrilled when he was picked by my hometown NFL team.  So, you already know which side of the fence I stand on.I think the first hurdle to clear is what the player meant to his team.  Tiki Barber owns a bevy of team records, from career rushing touchdowns (55) to Most 1,000 yard seasons (6).  Tiki Barber is also only the third player in NFL...

Concede a spot to Amani?
2008-06-27 09:32:51
Should we concede Amani Toomer a spot on our All-Time Team (he is cruising in the poll) and re-vote the 2nd slot? If you guys want to do that, I will put up a new wide receiver poll this weekend without Toomer in it? Poll Should we concede an All-Time Team slot to Amani Toomer and re-vote for the 2nd slot? Vote for the All-Time Team wide receivers
2008-06-27 07:00:02
Wide receiver is next up as we close in on completing our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team. This should be an interesting vote, as we have well-known players from a variety of eras to choose from. The top two vote-getters will be named to the team. So, here are your nominees. Amani Toomer -- Never thought of as a superstar, or a game-changing receiver, but he is -- statistically -- the best receiver in Giants' history. Straight from Giants.com, here is just some of the Toomer bio. -  Toomer holds franchise records for catches (620), receiving yards (8,917), touchdown catches (50) and 100-yard receiving games (22). -  Toomer has 34 more receptions than runner-up Tiki Barber (586) and 3,483 more yards than former record-holder Frank Gifford (5,434). -  Toomer also holds the Giants postseason records for reception (42), yards (582) and touchdowns (7).  No one else in Giants playoff history has more than 3 postseason touchdown receptions (Bavaro and Gifford)....

Snee gets his new deal
2008-06-25 06:01:13
Well, that's one problem solved. The Giants have reportedly reached a six-year contract extension with guard Chris Snee. He is, of course, best known for being coach Tom Coughlin's son-in-law. Snee, though, is the Giants best lineman. He's only 26 and is a guy who could visit the Pro Bowl a few times before this new contract is over. Getting the Snee deal done quickly was a good move by GM Jerry Reese. Unfortunately, settling on a new deal with Plaxico Burress and pacifying Jeremy Shockey won't be so easy. ...

Tuesday morning tidbits
2008-06-24 06:01:11
Here are a few items making the rounds today, Day 1 of the post-Jared Lorenzen era for the New York Giants. Plaxico Burress has penned a book "Giants: The Road to the Super Bowl." Gee, how original. In it, Burress apparently details just how badly hurt he was from falling in the shower days before the Super Bowl, and says he has never been happy with his 6-year, $26 million contract. I admire the guy's toughness, but nobody whining about a $26 million contract is getting sympathy from me. Geoffrey Pope has apparently been cleared of any wrongdoing in a recent incident where a man was reportedly hit over the head with a champagne bottle. Michael Strahan has been signed by FOX Sports to join their pre-game show. How is he going to get a word in with Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson already there?     ...

Bye-bye, Battleship!
2008-06-23 20:39:26
The Hefty Lefty is no longer a Giant. Well, he is, actually, he is just no longer a New York Giant. In a move that has been anticipated since the Giants drafted Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson, the Giants Monday released backup quarterback Jared Lorenzen. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound (probably heavier than that) Lorenzen threw only 8 passes and ran two quarterback sneaks in three seasons. The Giants also waived several other forgettable or unknown players Monday. The only worth being concerned about, though, is Lorenzen. The Giants won't miss the big fella on the field -- he barely knew where it was, anyway. We will miss him off the field, though. Hefty Lefty. Battleship Lorenzen. J-Load. I'm sure I'm forgetting some of his nicknames. I think the guy had more of them than any scrub in NFL history. Picking on David Carr sure as hell isn't going to be as much fun. ...

Monday morning tidbits
2008-06-23 06:00:58
Here are a few interesting items on a Monday morning. With all the distractions the Giants have had this off-season, you would think the Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles would be salivating at an opportunity to knock down the defending champs. Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News has warned Cowboys faithful not to be so hasty in dismissing the Giants, though. The reality is that if the Giants have taken full advantage of the New York media market to capitalize on their Super Bowl, the status of their troubles is much exaggerated, too. ... The real blocking and tackling doesn't get under way for another five weeks. And even then the regular season is six weeks away. When it finally arrives, the team that should be regarded the highest is the team that accomplished something in the playoffs. Not the one that hasn't produced in the postseason in a decade and still has much to prove. Common sense out of Dallas. Amazing! Donovan McNabb of the Eagles has seen plenty of locker room d...

The Men Who Made Them Giants
2008-06-22 06:00:43
In conjunction with the vote for the All-time Giants head coach, we thought you might enjoy a synopsis of every head coach the Giants have ever had. So let’s get right to it. Bob Folwell (1925): Folwell came to the New York Football Giants following a successful coaching stint at Navy. He led the Giants to an 8-4 record in their first year in the league, and then left to take over as head coach of the Philadelphia Quakers of the original American Football League. Joe Alexander (1926):  Alexander was an All-Star player for the Giants from 1925-1927, and in 1926 he also served as head coach. Also a practicing medical doctor, Alexander was one of the few Giants to receive a yearly salary. He relinquished the position of head coach for his final season in 1927. Alexander is also a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Earl Potteiger (1927-28): Potteiger took over as player-coach of the Giants in 1927, and led them to their first NFL Championship. The Giant...

Giants' Pope arrested
2008-06-21 20:43:22
Geesh, did the Giants suddenly turn into the Cincinnati Bengals? On the heels of the news that Ahmad Bradshaw is spending 30 days in jail, cornerback Geoffrey Pope faces felony charges after allegedly hitting a man over the head with a champagne bottle. Pope was a practice squad guy last season until injuries forced him into action in the playoffs. He's intriguing because of his blazing speed, but we may never know if he could be a player. Right now the Giants have 86 players, and they can only bring 80 to training camp. Pope may have just made one of those decisions a whole lot easier. The way things have been going, the Giants have enough problems right now without keeping around a marginal player who is in trouble with the law. ...

Who should coach our All-Time Team?
2008-06-21 08:26:13
Our man 'jrs' is working on the history of the Giants coaching tree. Soon, he will be giving you an in-depth look at every coach the Giants have ever had. I am looking forward to what we can all learn from that. I want to vote on the coach for our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team next. To get that going, here is the short version. The candidates are below, with a quick bio. We will be getting more detail from 'jrs,' on these guys, but this will get the voting started. The candidates. Steve Owen -- Coached the Giants from 1931-53. Won NFL titles in 1934 and 1938, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1966. A 151-100-17 overall record. Jim Lee Howell -- Succeeded Owen and coached from 1954-60. A 53-37-4 overall record and an NFL title in 1956. Allie Sherman -- Coached from 1961-68, and was a two-time Coach of the Year. A 57-51-4 record, but probably gets demerits for coaching at the beginning of the 'Wilderness Years.' Bill Parcells -- Two-time Super Bowl winner (1986, 1990) and w...

Ranking the franchises
2008-06-20 11:01:24
How would you rank NFL franchises in terms of their all-time significance? Cold Hard Football Facts took on that challenge recently. I think it's hard to argue with their conclusion that the Green Bay Packers are the best NFL franchise of all time. The Giants are No. 3 all time in CHFF's rankings, behind only the Packers and the hated Dallas Cowboys. Here's part of what CHFF had to say about the Giants. New York’s historic victory over the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII earlier this year certainly didn’t hurt the organization’s ranking, either. But, amazingly, it was not the first time the Giants knocked off a seemingly unstoppable juggernaut. The 1934 Bears went 13-0 and outscored their opponents 286-86. Yet they were pounded, 30-13, by the humble 8-5 Giants in the NFL championship game.   The consistency with which the Giants have been NFL contenders is evident by their 18 championship game appearances. Basically, the Giants play for ...

More on the Bradshaw situation
2008-06-20 06:32:53
Newsday has more today on the Ahmad Bradshaw situation. It seems Bradshaw is spending 30 days in the slammer to atone for past sins, not a new offense. The underlying charge in this matter stems from an offense which occurred while Mr. Bradshaw was a juvenile," his attorney, Charles A. Stacy, said in a statement. If this is indeed something from Bradshaw's past he still needed to clean up and not a new transgression that is definitely good news. ...

Breaking News: Ahmad Bradshaw jailed
2008-06-19 14:59:18
ABINGDON, VIRGINIA (TICKER) — New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw remains in jail for an undisclosed probation violation. Bradshaw, 22, is serving a sentence at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail. A spokesman for the jail told PA SportsTicker that said Bradshaw voluntarily checked himself into the facility Sunday. He also said Bradshaw will “serve a certain amount of time.” Bradshaw was sentenced to two years probation in 2006 for a misdemeanor petty larceny charge while attending Marshall University. He was charged with stealing a PlayStation game from another student. As a rookie last season, Bradshaw played in 12 games for the Super Bowl champion Giants, rushing for 190 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. ...

Optimism from Burress
2008-06-19 06:00:01
In case you missed it, there was some good news reported yesterday on the Plaxico Burress contract situation. Burress sounded optimistic, and not bitter at all, about getting a deal done soon with the Giants. "Honestly, I think my situation is going to be rectified before training camp," Burress said. "I'm not going to worry about it, but I did state that I was unhappy with my current situation with my contract. It'll be worked out." Burress made it clear he is happy as a Giant. "I don't want to go anywhere. I made that very evident," Burress said. "If I wanted to go somewhere else or if I didn't want to be there, I would have let that be known, too. I'm going to come out and speak how I feel and tell you what's right. But as far as me, I'm very happy where I'm at. I love the situation I'm in, I love the guys I play with, I love the city and I just love everything about me playing football up there. I just want to end my career there. I don't want to travel all around the globe t...

Everyone take a second today
2008-06-18 08:36:04
to thank the New York Giants for preventing a Boston sweep of the three major sports championships.     Thank you, Justin Tuck (via media.2theadvocate.com) If you are a Yankees/Knicks (ugh) fan like myself, thank the New York Giants today. If you hate ESPN (the Boston Al-Jazeera network), thank the New York Giants today. If you rolled your eyes at Paul Pierce's bullshit dramatic "injury" performance in Game 1, thank the New York Giants today. If you wish someone would drill Manny Ramirez in the ribs while he stands at home plate admiring a home run, thank the New York Giants today. If you have a fat friend named Bobby from Worcester that hasn't yet taken the price tags off his Kevin Garnett jersey, thank the New York Giants today. If you believe in SpyGate and the fact Kevin McHale handed his franchise player to Danny Ainge, thank the New York Giants. If you can imagine the dark, cold, and incredibly annoying world we would all be forced to live in h...

I dare you not to laugh at this
2008-06-18 06:00:46
Chris Cooley of the Washington Redskins is now right there with Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards as my all-time favorite athlete bloggers. This gem from his Cooley Zone blog is the funniest thing I've read in a long time. It's an interview with Washington QB Jason Campbell in which they discuss the quarterback-center exchange. COOLEY: Jason, have you ever smelled the back of your left hand (the one that's securely lodged under the center's sweaty butt crack the entire game) after a game? I would imagine that hand would have to go through a thorough decontamination process after every game and practice. CAMPBELL: For everyone to know if you don’t take a bath your butt crack stinks and I think that's what Rabach does to me. Imagine sweating for 2 hours and you're Casey Rabach and you're really hairy and stinky. Rabach has even farted on my hand which is a feelin that never really wears off. I can actually feel it while we’re doing this interview right now. After ...

Tuesday notebook
2008-06-17 06:00:51
A few Giants notes for a Tuesday. Former GM Ernie Accorsi has been hired as a consultant by the NFL. His first duty will be to co-chair a new general managers advisory committee. Teams are being held to an 80-player roster limit for training camp, and Tom Coughlin and his staff are trying to figure out how to work with that limited number.  “It is a big difference,” Coughlin said when the Giants wrapped up their mini-camp last week. “You will have to (change your planning). Hopefully, you will be as healthy as you can be and you won’t have to do a lot of radical changing. I’m not a mathematician, but most of you guys can figure out that by the time you include special teams, you are not talking 80, you are talking in the 70s. And then when you have people that are coming off surgeries and can’t work, even if it is the one (practice) a day type thing, you have to be sure that the other players at that position – even if they are young ...

Deeper problems than we thought?
2008-06-16 06:15:02
In an ominous-sounding article Sunday, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News quotes a Giants official as saying "more people than you know" want new contracts. There are also hints in the article that some players have been hitting the banquet circuit a little harder than the fitness room this offseason, with coach Tom Coughlin saying "We have some people that are not in the kind of condition they need to be in." Ah, the price of success in the modern era. Unfortunately, for a lot of today's players the winning isn't the most important thing. It's when they win, how can they cash in? We know Plaxico Burress wants a new deal. We have no clue what Jeremy Shockey wants, but he wants something. Michael Strahan has retired. Vacchiano says that at times during the off-season Osi Umenyiora, Chris Snee and Brandon Jacobs asked for new deals, and hints there have been others. Is this just normal post Super Bowl stuff that will, largely, go away by training camp? Or, is there more to be ...

Time to send Shockey packing
2008-06-14 05:50:18
Is a trade the only way out of this Jeremy Shockey mess? Shockey apparently had a shouting match with GM Jerry Reese during mini-camp, and now coach Tom Coughlin is referring to him simply as "an issue." Ralph Vacchiano said yesterday in his Blue Screen blog that "a trade might not be such a bad idea." That's a stance that was advocated earlier in the week by Daily News columnist Gary Myers. The Giants need the firepower Shockey brings, but that is canceled out by the problems he's capable of causing. They should have taken the second-round pick from Sean Payton when the Saints wanted him very badly. Maybe those talks can be revived. Unless Shockey shows that he wants to be here and is motivated to prove the Giants can win it all with him, then he's not worth the headache. They have already proven they can beat the best teams without him. At this point, I agree. With a healthy, happy Shockey the Giants are more talented. Are they a better team? The fact that they won the Super Bow...

Wednesday Walk Around The League (Thursday edition)
2008-06-12 10:14:01
I know, I know, its Thursday, but we figured we would give the Strahan/Shockey/ and then Plax stories another day. Here are some non-Strahan stories making the rounds this week: Another future Hall of Famer is hanging them up. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Jonathan Ogden will retire today. John Rauch, who led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl berth in 1967, has died at the age of 80. Randy Hill of Fox Sports says its time for the Bears to kick Cedric Benson to the curb. I'm no Bears fan, so I could care less, but that team would be crazy to ever spend a first round pick on a RB again after Rashaan Salaam, Curtis Enis, and now Benson. You can't argue with their previous success with 1st round backs (Sayers, Payton,  Neal Anderson), but that well has definitely run dry. Former Bucs and Bengals coach Sam Wyche has entered politics. Can't give you the NFL news without a TO story . Ray Buck from the Fort Worth Star Telegram wants us to feel sorry for T.O. Yeah, I'll be up...

It's June -- get off the panic button
2008-06-12 06:00:54
To put it mildly, this is hardly the ideal way to start  a Super Bowl title defense. In less than a week, the Giants have dealt with the retirement of Michael Strahan, the unhappy rantings of disgruntled Jeremy Shockey, and now the demands for a new contract by Plaxico Burress. So much for peace, love, harmony and a lack of distractions. Burress apparently wants to be paid TO/Randy Moss/Javon Walker money . Shockey is ticked off at the Giants for God knows what, so he spent yesterday, the first day of mini-camp, ticking off his head coach. Strahan just wants to make millions without sweating and having 300-pound guys beat on him every Sunday. It seems like a mess. In reality, though, we should have seen all of this coming. Burress played tremendously on one leg last season, proving himself to be among the half-dozen elite receivers in the league. Now he wants to be paid like it. In today's NFL, that's how it works. You win, the stars demand to cash in. TO recently signed a fou...

Plax wants a new deal
2008-06-11 15:19:09
Plaxico Burress has arrived at Giants mini-camp, but has informed the coaching staff he will not practice without a new contract Also, some Giant staffers will have to wait a little long for their Super Bowl rings, theirs were stolen. ...

Garafolo answers BBV 's questions
2008-06-11 06:00:02
As promised last night, I have an interview with Star-Ledger Giants' beat writer Mike Garafolo for you today. I really appreciate Mike's taking the time to do this with the explosion of news around the Giants lately. I hope you enjoy it. BBV: How do you see the Jeremy Shockey situation playing out? Will he ever be happy as a Giant? More importantly, can he be a dominant player again? MG: When the Shockey rumors were rolling before the draft, I was repeatedly asked what I thought would happen with this situation. At the time, I said there would be no draft-day trade, but I could see a situation in which he held out of camp and was traded in mid-August. Honestly, after the draft, I didn't have a lot of confidence in that prediction because I felt Shockey's being back on the field in minicamp would help heal the wounds in this situation. I still feel that could be the case, but at this point, we're all unsure if Shockey will be there. If he is, I think this situation will be resolved....

Strahan says goodbye
2008-06-10 18:43:00
Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger is the man. From Garafolo's 'Ledger on Giants' blog here is video of Michael Strahan speaking during his retirement press conference today. Following that is Coach Tom Coughlin speaking about Strahan. I was lucky enough to get Garafolo to answer some questions the other day, and with the Strahan retirement, the Jeremy Shockey stuff and the opening of mini-camp the timing couldn't be better. The interview I had with him will be posted here Wednesday morning. Now, on to the videos. Michael Strahan talks about his retirement Tom Coughlin talks about Strahan retirement If those snippets aren't enough for you Giants.com has the entire Strahan press conference in three parts. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 ...

Where does Michael rank?
2008-06-10 07:00:01
I realize we're into Michael Strahan overkill here, but I have to toss this out there. ESPN's 'Hashmarks' blog has ranked the top pass rushers of all time, with Deacon Jones No. 1 and Strahan 6th. Lawrence Taylor is fourth on the list, the highest-ranked non-defensive end. Check the list and send me yours. I'm curious where you would put Strahan. ...

Should Kiwi replace Strahan?
2008-06-10 06:00:57
OK, so Michael Strahan has retired. Now what? Do the Giants move Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, or use Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Renaldo Wynn and whoever else proves worthy? The players are apparently already lobbying for Kiwi to go back to defensive end , his natural position. It doesn't seem to matter to Kiwanuka. “I’ve been through the whole ‘What position are you going to play?’ thing,” he said. “The only way I can approach it is wait until I hear something. But right now I’m a linebacker and that’s the way I’m going to approach the upcoming mini-camp.” OK, Big Blue View Nation. It's now reality that Strahan is gone. Where do you want to see Kiwi play? Vote in the poll. Poll With Michael Strahan having retired, should Mathias Kiwanuka stay at linebacker or move back to defensive end? Linebacker Defensive End   2 votes | Results ...

What they're saying about Strahan
2008-06-09 17:43:30
On the day Michael Strahan announced his retirement, I thought I would honor the best defensive end the Giants have ever had by looking around and seeing what others have to say about the sure Hall of Famer. From Grizz, at Blogging The Boys . Even though Strahan played for a rival and tormented the Cowboys on many occasions, I always respected his skill. The guy was one of the best at what he does and deserves recognition for that. But…I’m shedding no tears over his retirement. Good luck on whatever you’re going to do in the future Michael, but I’m happy that we won’t be game-planning for you any longer. Giants' middle linebacker Antonio Pierce . "I'm happy he made his decision. I'm not saying I'm happy he retired, I'm just saying I'm happy he made his decision. Now all the questions can stop being asked and we can focus on the guys who are going to play for the 2008 Giants. Strahan is an all-time great and a good friend. I'll do nothing but wish hi...

Strahan retires
2008-06-09 11:06:48
Michael Strahan has announced his retirement . I'll do a retrospective when I have time, but for now I wanted to get the news out there for you. It's not a surprise, but it's too bad we won't get to see No. 92, one of the greatest Giants ever, line up again. ...

Surfing the Giants on a Monday
2008-06-09 09:49:36
Here are some Giants-related stories to get you through a very hot Monday Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down, has written a new novel all about The Greatest Game Ever Played. Giants GM Jerry Reese endorses a football camp for kids run by his head coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin. The Buffalo News has a breakdown and list of questions facing each team in the NFC East. Ed's got me running all over the country looking for Giants news. As Lloyd Lindsay Young would say "Helllooooooooooooooo Fargo, North Dakota!!!"  The Fargo In-Forum has a story about "former" Giants safety Craig Dahl, who is hoping for another shot with the Giants. Finally, Clark Judge of CBS Sportsline can't figure out why the Giants are getting so little respect.   ...

Shockey's bitterness is obvious
2008-06-08 09:00:59
If it wasn't obvious before it's obvious now that Jeremy Shockey's relationship with the Giants is badly damaged. Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger caught up with Shockey Saturday when Shockey was in New York doing a promotion for POWERade. This is what Shockey had to say. The statement I would like to make about the Giants and speculation in the offseason is that whatever happens between the upper management, the lower management, the owners, any management, is going to keep between ourselves. Unlike the Giants, I'm going to be quiet. They've released multiple things about myself. If you look back into the media, theres always a source; well, I'd like to know who the source is, we'll go over here and deal it out ourself. Because I haven't said one negative thing towards the Giants in the newspapers, I have never expressed feelings about the things you guys made up, That's pretty biting, bitter stuff from Shockey. I don't know what to make of Shockey's accusatory tone. I do know th...

There is some big horse race today
2008-06-07 06:00:57
I have to interrupt our daily discussion of the Giants today to recognize that history could be made in a different sport today. Big Brown goes to the post this afternoon at the Belmont Stakes, aiming to become horse racing's first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. My good buddy Rick Snider, a long time turf writer, has agreed to give us his pick for today. Here it is. Big Brown is a big lukewarm pick to become a Triple Crown champion on Saturday in the Belmont Stakes. I've covered racing for 25 years and personally watched the last eight crown-seekers lose and a lot of them were better than Big Brown. Unlike many of the other failed champions, Big Brown has no major competition. Casino Drive and Macho Again are the top contenders, and value wise I would take Macho Again in the exacta and Casino Drive in the triple. If you're game, put Macho Again on top for $2 and you might cash for a lot of money. Bad things happen on the racetrack all the time. Dumb rides, injur...

Moving on to offensive tackle
2008-06-06 06:00:45
The offensive guards joining our Big Blue View All-Time Giants will be Ron Stone and Chris Snee. Stone was the leading vote-getter with 25, and Snee had 22. Jack Stroud finished with 13 votes, and I'm not surprised he finished a distant third since many Giants fans know nothing about him. I'm not sure Snee has done enough yet to really deserve this honor, but he is a terrific player so I can't really complain. Anyway, let's move on to select the offensive tackles. Here are your nominees. Jumbo Elliott -- One Pro Bowl in a 14-year career with the Giants and Jets from 1988-2002. Anchored the left side of the Giants line for several seasons. Cal Hubbard -- Inducted into the Hall of Fame as a tackle in 1963. Played from 1927-36, but only two of those seasons were with the Giants. Was a two-way player who played tackle and guard on offense, and tackle and end on defense. Rosey Brown -- Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975. Brown was a nine-time Pro Bowler and eight-time All Pro. Played...

Tyree will be fighting to hang on

Read lots of speculation yesterday that Super Bowl hero David Tyree could find himself out of a job this season. With third-round pick Mario Manningham added to a deep corps of receivers that includes Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, Steve Smith and Sinorice Moss the questions about Tyree's ability to make the team are justified. Tyree will also be fighting for a roster spot with Michael Jennings, free agent DJ Hall and return man, special teams ace Domenic Hixon. "I have no reason to really worry," he said. "I've proven myself when I've been given the opportunity. I'm not that concerned. It's not that big of a deal to me. I just have to get back to being healthy and do the things that I can do. "Making the catch was a great opportunity, but I can't rest on it. I have to work hard. There's always something to prove. You always have to have the competitive edge." The reality is the Giants don't need Tyree as a receiver. He caught only four balls in the regular season last season and ...

What is a reasonable expectation for 2008?
2008-06-04 06:00:02
Wow! June 4 and there is real football stuff to report. Reporters were allowed to watch Tuesday's Giants workout, which was part of their OTAs. Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger and Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News each have practice reports. As Garafolo wrote, "The title defense has officially begun." With that line hanging there, this is as good a time as any to discuss expectations for the upcoming season. Coming off a Super Bowl title what would qualify as a good 2008 season? What would qualify as a disappointing one? Please don't give me that George Steinbrenner "Nothing short of another title is acceptable" nonsense. Yankee fans should know by now that that is an unreasonable standard that generally leaves you feeling unsatisfied. Let's be realistic. The Super Bowl run was a highlight Giants' fans will never forget. It's also one we had no reasonable right to expect. With a couple of weeks left in the regular season we were wondering if the Giants were even playoff material. T...

Why is Wynn a Giant?
2008-06-03 06:00:02
So, what does the signing of defensive end Renaldo Wynn , a 12-year veteran, mean for the Giants? Does it mean they think Michael Strahan is retiring? I don't know, but they are definitely hedging their bets. Does it mean they would really like to keep Mathias Kiwanuka at linebacker, at least on running downs? Definitely. Does it mean Wynn can expect a lot of playing time? Even if Strahan retires, the Giants have Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, as well as Dave Tollefson and Jay Alford, both of whom showed some ability last season. They also have sixth-round draft pick Robert Henderson. Wynn played for Giants coach Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville. To me, this is simply a case of the Giants bringing in a player Coughlin respects to be absolutely certain they have enough depth on the defensive front. Wynn won't be asked to do anything great. Just play an occasional series, defend the run and hold his own. Renaldo Wynn #99 / Defensive- End / New York Giants Hei...

Giants In The News
2008-06-02 09:43:16
Here are a couple of Giants-related stories found in some of the players hometown sites: Ahmad Bradshaw had his high school jersey retired in an emotional ceremony. After all the chaos of a Super Bowl victory, Brandon Jacobs is looking for a slower pace of life, and he may find it in Huntsville, Alabama. Chris Snee hosted a Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest in his hometown, and he brought along a buddy from the offensive line to help. Justin Tuck is helping kids in his hometown learn the joy of reading. With all the negativity surrounding the NFL these days, it's great to see some positive articles surrounding our Super Bowl Champion New York Giants (that never gets old). Thanks to the Bluefield Telegraph, Huntsville Times via al.com, WBNG-12 Binghamton, and The Earth Times for supplying these stories. ...

Mannings Among Men

Never let it be said that BBV doesn't aim to please. Earlier in the week 'mahmoodzakay' had asked if we could do a comparison between Eli and Peyton Manning as to where they were after 4 years in the NFL. After much discussion, we've decided to go one better and include stats for their Dad, Archie, as well. We've prepared a statistical breakdown for each one, as well as some season by season notes. We'll start with Archie Manning. Archie was drafted Number 2 overall by the New Orleans Saints in 1971 out of Ole Miss.
