Yanks could use a bat like this
2007-07-06 16:08:00
In case you missed it New York Yankees' fans, Gary Sheffield hit his 20th home run of the season last night for the Detroit Tigers. The milestone home run was the 475th of Sheffield's career, tying him for 27th all-time with Stan Musial and Willie Stargell. It also made Sheffield the first player in baseball history to hit 20 or more home runs for seven different teams.Sheffield has been healthy this season and, predictably, is putting up excellent numbers (.298, 20 homers, 56 RBI).Could the Yankees, who have only Alex Rodriguez as a true power threat and have struggled to score runs for two months, use Sheffield right now?Of course they could. And I know there are Yankees fans out there who will crucify GM Brian Cashman for the way trading Sheffield to Detroit has turned out so far. After a...

Is Bonds really the best HR hitter of all time?
2007-07-05 01:18:00
It is only a matter of time now. Barry Bonds is at 751 home runs and counting, marching steadfastly toward breaking Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 career home runs.Like it or not, some time soon Bonds will number 756 and will be the all-time home run king.Bonds will hold the record, but does that single fact really make him the most prolific home run hitter of all time? Maybe. Maybe not. Without meaning to denigrate Bonds or his historic accomplishment, let's look a little deeper at the numbers and see what we come up with.Steroids will not enter into this discussion, just the raw numbers. There's no factual way to say exactly who has done what, or quantify the impact of the use of performance-enhancing drugs. All we can do here is go by the numbers. We'll consider seven players -- Bon...

Artest makes sense for Knicks
2007-07-04 16:03:00
The Sacramento Kings are reportedly trying to trade enigmatic forward Ron Artest, and the New York Knicks are said to be one of the teams interested. Why wouldn't they be? By acquiring Zach Randolph, who has had several run-ins with the law, from Portland Thomas showed that he is willing to put character concerns aside in an effort to get the Knicks back to the playoffs. So, if Thomas is willing to roll the dice on Artest, effectively turning the Knicks into a halfway-house for troubled NBA players, The View has a few more suggestions for players Thomas should pursue.• Ruben Patterson. The veteran forward has had several problems with the law, including being a convicted sex offender. He's currently a free agent. Patterson played with Randolph in Portland, so he would give the Knicks f...

Little League -- too much pressure?
2007-07-03 13:26:00
All across the country 11- and 12-year-old kids are practicing and preparing to play in Little League All-Star Tournaments.I was chatting with the mom of one of those youngsters a couple of days ago, and as she talked about the All-Star experience I kept thinking only this -- thank God I'm done with that.Thank God I'm done with the nightly two to three-hour practices, including the ones held on game days. Thank God I'm done with forking over $150-200 for a new bat for the All-Star games because some coach didn't like the $75 one my son used all season. Thank God I'm done watching kids stress over every at-bat, or wear themselves out because they spent 8 hours at basketball camp before showing up for that night's All-Star practice or game. Thank God I'm don...

Who was A-Rod's wife talking to?
2007-07-02 19:55:00
So, just exactly who was Alex' Rodriguez' wife, Cynthia, targeting when she wore a T-shirt that said 'F--- You' on it at Sunday's game? She, of course, is not going to tell us. So, we'll just have to guess.• Her husband. A-Rod, as I'm sure you remember, was photographed not that long ago entering a Toronto strip club with a buxom stripper. Is this Cynthia's way of telling her hubby she's about to exercise her own 'opt-out' clause?• Any willing man. Again in an effort to get some payback on her philandering hubby, she could have been going Anna Benson on us here and making an offer she hoped someone wouldn't refuse. You remember Mrs. Benson's threat to sleep with the entire team if her hubby Kris, then of the Mets, cheated on her?• Yankee fans. In a bela...

Today at BigBlueView
2007-07-02 16:26:00
Is New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan worthy of enshrinement into football's Hall of Fame.CBS Sportsline's Pete Prisco thinks so, and while I don't think of Strahan as one of the most feared defensive ends ever, I would agree.-- Read more at BigBlueView ...

Should the Yankees start over?
2007-07-02 12:51:00
Scott Proctor torched his equipment. Jorge Posada questioned whether some of his teammates are still trying. Kyle Farnsworth is throwing tantrums and embarrassing his manager.Different members of the New York Yankees are handling, or not handling the team's continued struggles depending on your point of view, in different ways. The Yankees have lost 8 of 10, slid back to four games under .500 (37-41), and are showing no signs that they have what it takes to make a late run at either the AL East-leading Red Sox or the wild-card berth. So, with the back-sliding Bronx Bunglers sitting 11 games behind Boston, and 8½ games out of the wild-card race, do Proctor and Posada have the right idea? Is it time for Yankee management to mail in the rest of the season, t...

Thomas a draft-day magician
2007-06-29 12:59:00
I don't know what New York Knicks GM/Coach Isiah Thomas eats for breakfast on draft day, but whatever it is he should do it more often.Thomas might be a bumbling, directionless GM 364 days a year. On draft day, however, the guy turns into a magician. The Knicks seemed like they would be spectators in last night's draft, having dealt their lottery pick to Chicago a couple of years back for Eddy Curry. Yet, seemingly out of left field, Thomas was able to engineer a trade for Zach Randolph, a dominant low-post player who averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds a game for Portland last season. On top of that, he did it at hardly any cost to the Knicks. True, he gave up young F/C Channing Frye, but Frye will never be more than a decent complementary player. He won't...

Stuff that makes me feel old
2007-06-28 21:59:00
My beard has plenty of gray hair in it, but I'm not exactly an old guy yet -- even though my kids like to tell me I am.Every now and then, though, stuff happens that makes me realize that if I'm not old, I'm certainly not young anymore, either.Like the other day I'm chatting with one of the 20-something sports fanatics here, and I mentioned this great YouTube clip of a tirade by Hall of Fame Manager Earl Weaver. His response? 'Who's that? I never heard of him.'Geez, has it really been 21 years since Weaver was chain-smoking in the dugout and cussing at umpires?Another thing that made me feel old was reading on Greg Oden's blog this morning that he was in eighth grade -- eighth grade, for crying out loud -- when the 9/11 attack occurred. In a few hours, the dude will be the No. 1 pick in th...

Oden showing a lighter side
2007-06-28 14:17:00
I'm turning into a Greg Oden fan.Oden, the likely No. 1 pick in tonight's NBA Draft, has been making the rounds prior to the draft. Somewhat like Shaquille O'Neal, Oden is coming off as a guy with a likable, fan-friendly personality to match his 7-foot, 260-pound frame.Oden has been chronicling his pre-draft experiences in a wildly popular blog on Yardbarker. He might not be a great writer (hey Greg, try some paragraph marks once in a while, please), but his blog is a fun read. Here's a couple of recent gems.On having dinner with Steve Nash. "He is way more mature than me."On signing a contract with Nike. "I just want a commercial with "Little Penny" maybe they can call it "Little Oden" I would love it. I really want to make a funny commercial like "The Leb...

KG perfect sidekick for Kobe
2007-06-27 12:50:00
Kevin Garnett a Los Angeles Laker?I have no idea if the Lakers can actually pull this off, bringing in Garnett to pair with Kobe Bryant. Los Angeles is reportedly trying to work a deal for Garnett that would also include Boston and Indiana. Brokering a trade like this is a minefield, and who knows if the Lakers can pull it off.I do know that Garnett is the perfect NBA superstar to pair with Bryant. Kobe has been howling about his treatment in LA and demanding a trade. I think what he has really been doing is stomping his foot like a petulant child and demanding that the Lakers get him some real help.Garnett could be a great sidekick for Bryant, and not just because he is also on the short list of the game's biggest superstars. Many of the stars on that list couldn't co-exist with Bryant.Ga...

LoDuca no match for George Brett
2007-06-26 18:27:00
Paul LoDuca of the Mets had a great meltdown the other day. If you missed it, here it is through the wonders of YouTube.LoDuca's tirade, though, still doesn't qualify as the best player meltdown ever. That honor still has to go to George Brett. I refer, of course, to the legendary Pine Tar incident. ...

Tanking Tank a good move
2007-06-26 16:05:00
Hopefully, the Chicago Bears have started a trend.Following another run-in with police over the weekend the Bears released defensive tackle Tank Johnson, doing what the Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals haven't had the guts to do with PacMan Jones and Chris Henry.Johnson was already suspended for violating probation on a gun charge, and the Bears had backed him up. But, when he was pulled over for speeding at 3:30 a.m. over the weekend and was suspected of being impaired, the 'embarrassed' Bears had had enough. It's about time. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been the driving force behind the changing attitude toward off-field player conduct, insisting on a new 'zero tolerance' player conduct policy.Goodell's suspensions of Johnson and Henry for eigh...

Yankees going the wrong way again
2007-06-25 12:55:00
Whoops! Better hold off on all that talk about the New York Yankees being on their way to a 1978-style comeback. After back-to-back awful losses to the San Francisco Giants, they have officially turned into the Bronx Bumblers again. The Yankees were baseball's hottest team for about two weeks, and both Yankee fans and baseball experts wanted to believe their troubles were behind them. The Yankees, though, have lost 5 of 6, and tumbled below .500 again at 36-37. After closing within 7 games of Boston, the Yankees find themselves 11½ games back this morning. Worse yet, they have fallen to third place in the AL East, a ½-game behind the Blue Jays. The wild card? They are 6½ games behind Cleveland, but there are 5 teams in front of the Yankees and making a ru...

Barry Bonds, All-Star?
2007-06-24 16:15:00
Should Barry Bonds be an All-Star?Of course.I despise Bonds, and I find it hard to stomach that at some point this season he will pass Hank Aaron to become baseball's all-time home run leader.Yet, if he isn't voted in as a starter (he's fourth in votes among NL outfielders in the last tally released) he has to be named to the team as a reserve. There are lots of reasons why. The game is, of course, in San Francisco and Bonds is the player fans will want to see. There is also the home run chase. On a personal level, I'd love to see baseball slight Bonds and leave him home. I don't think Bud Selig can do that, however, without turning the game into a joke and making himself look bad.The biggest reason Bonds has to be on th...

Disabled List All-Star teams
2007-06-23 13:26:00
Miguel Tejada went on the disabled list Friday with a broken wrist. Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson also recently were disabled. All these big names landing on the DL got me thinking that you could probably make two pretty darn good teams out of all the guys currently injured. So, I thought I'd try. Here are my Disabled List All-Star teams. Whenever possible, I am going to favor guys who will be out for a while over those who are soon coming off the DL. Let's see how close I can get to filling out two full, quality teams.American LeagueStarting Pitchers -- Curt Schilling, Francisco Liriano, Kris Benson, Carl Pavano, Matt ClementRelief Pitchers -- B.J. Ryan, Huston Street, Joel Zumaya, Arthur Rhodes, Danys Baez, Justin Duscher...

Tribute to weekend hackers
2007-06-22 13:17:00
It's Friday, it's summer and that means it's a golf day here at The View.Weather permitting, our little foursome will be closing up shop a little early this afternoon, hanging out the 'Summer Hours' sign (shhhhhh, don't tell the boss .... oh, never mind, he's playing, too) and heading for the first tee. Here's a little tribute to high-quality golf for my playing partners, and all you weekend duffers, to get you in the mood to head to the links. ...

600 homers, and lots of questions
2007-06-21 13:42:00
I don't quite know how to feel about Sammy Sosa reaching 600 home runs.I would love to congratulate the guy for becoming only the 5th player to reach that milestone, but I'm not sure he really deserves it.We know Slammin' Sammy corked his way to some of those 600 homers. We're also pretty sure he juiced his way to quite a few of those, as well. His embarrassing, 'I don't speak English' performance in front of Congress tells you he has plenty to hide. There's just no telling how many of those home runs were aided by a little something extra in Sosa's bat, or in his biceps. So, it's tough to congratulate the guy.I give him credit for coming back this year and playing well after a year away from the game. I can't however, feel good about uttering his name in the same sentence as Aaron, Ruth an...

Thoughts on Pac-Man, and more
2007-06-20 22:17:00
A few items of interest on the menu this afternoon.• News Item: Pac-Man to be charged -- Strip clubs across America will be safe(r) places now that Pac-Man Jones is being charged with two felonies related to a February strip club shooting that left a man paralyzed. Personally, I hope Jones goes away for a long time. At the least, I suspect his NFL career is toast.• News Item: Cubs send Barrett to Padres -- The Cubbies have shipped brawling backstop Michael Barrett to the San Diego Padres. Barrett has traded blows with pitcher Carlos Zambrano, had a dugout shouting match with pitcher Rich Hill, and sucker-punched A.J. Pierzynski last season. I think it's probably a good thing Kevin Brown is no longer a Padre.• News Item: Reggie Theus to coach Sacramento Kings -- Reggie The...

Selig making a mockery of the game
2007-06-20 16:04:00
Let me be clear about this up front -- Bud Selig is a jackass! He's a complete joke, and might well be the worst commissioner baseball has ever had. There are a million reasons why, but for now let's focus on his treatment of Jason Giambi.According to Yahoo! Sports, the New York Yankees slugger is "at the half-yard line" in negotiations to reach a deal to meet with George Mitchell to discuss his involvement with steroids. To me, this 'deal' is just another in a long line of examples of Selig making a mockery of the game.Basically, if reports are accurate, Giambi is going to be allowed to testify without being asked to give names of other players or discuss anyone else's potential involvement with performance-enhancing drugs.Huh? So, what exactly is the poin...

Rosenthal bats .500
2007-06-19 21:36:00
Fox Sports baseball columnist Ken Rosenthal batted .500 today, going 1-for-2 in suggestions he made.• First, Rosenthal advised Joe Girardi to pass on the Baltimore Orioles managerial job. Here, Rosenthal is right on target. This job is career suicide for Girardi. If he thought working for Jeffrey Loria in Florida was tough, working for Peter Angelos has to be worse. Angelos is absolutely clueless on how to run a franchise, has a ridiculous co-GM arrangement with Mike Flanigan and Jim Duquette preventing things from getting done, and has now added to the management quagmire by naming Andy MacPhail CEO.This is a franchise stuck in neutral, if not reverse, and Girardi will be dragged down with it. He should wait until the offseason when he will have several options -- possibly including the...

We should be rooting for A-Rod
2007-06-19 13:49:00
Alex Rodriguez gets booed everywhere he goes. He's a villain in Seattle, Texas, Boston, Shea Stadium -- pretty much everywhere the Yankees go he is a target of scorn.Even in the Bronx A-Rod can be a target of Yankee fans' unhappiness. That hasn't been the case this year, as Rodriguez has been playing out of his mind, posting historic home run and RBI numbers. A-Rod, however, is just one prolonged slump or a few poor post-season at-bats from once again having the venom of the Yankee fans hurled in his direction.I guess that's the price you pay for being A-Rod, the $252 million dollar man, the richest of the rich, the best of the best. It's also unfortunate, and I say that as one who has been critical of A-Rod in the past and wondered if getting him out of New York wouldn't be the best thing ...

Posada compared to Munson
2007-06-18 13:18:00
Derek Jeter is the face of the New York Yankees. Alex Rodriguez is their best player. It is Jorge Posada, however, who is the team's heart and soul.Posada, 35, is suddenly getting lots of attention because he is hitting nearly .350. Yet, it's his every day competitiveness, his desire to win and his work with the myriad of Yankee pitchers that draw the admiration of his teammates.Posada is drawing comparisons to the late Thurman Munson.Aside from Mariano Rivera, and with apologies to Jeter and A-Rod, Posada may be the most irreplaceable Yankee. Torre thinks so. In the Journal News article comparing Posada to Munson the Yankee manager had this to say."He would be very tough for us to plug a hole with, and not only the offensive stuff, but the number of starting pitchers he's caught for us, t...

Kudos & Wet Willies
2007-06-17 14:38:00
It's time for a Sunday edition of 'Kudos & Wet Willies.'Kudos to ...• Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs. Parker averaged more than 24 points per game to lead the Spurs to their fourth NBA title in nine years. The Spurs aren't flashy, and you never think of them as a great team, but four championships in nine years is pretty special.• Justin Verlander. Verlander fired a no-hitter last week, and it might not be his last. The young Tigers right-hander was topping 100 mph in the 9th inning. He can be dominant the way Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens used to be.• Brandon Watson. Who? Watson is a member of the Columbus Clippers, and Saturday he tied an International League record by extending his hitting streak to 42 games.• Oakmont. Site of the ongoin...

Maybe Clemens will pitch forever
2007-06-16 21:51:00
Maybe Roger Clemens will pitch forever. At least you might think so if you check out this hilarious video.I know some of you may have already seen that, but it's too good not to post.U.S. Open UpdateOk, I'm a Tiger Woods guy and not a Phil Mickelson fan. So, yes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the injured Mickelson implode Thursday and Friday and miss the cut. And, yes, I was geeky enough to watch the Webcast from Golf.com while I was at work. What I enjoyed even more, though, was coming across this poll on Golf.com asking who the sexiest LPGA golfer is. That's a picture of Natalie Gulbis, and she gets my vote.Around the Blogosphere• Raiders coach is too tough. Sportable• Strahan: Coughlin 'borderline crazy.' Fanhouse ...

Mets not yet Kings of the City
2007-06-15 19:10:00
The New York Mets and their fans have been trying to dethrone the Yankees as 'Kings of the City' for a couple of years now.Last season was the year, Mets fans figured. They cruised through the regular season and seemed headed to the World Series. But, the Cardinals messed all that up.This season, they again started out like they were ready to proclaim themselves New York's finest. Three weeks ago, everything was sunny in Flushing while the Bronx was a timebomb. Now, however, the Yankees have won 9 straight and are baseball's hottest team. They have sliced seven games off the Red Sox AL East lead and are perched in Boston's rearview mirror, just 7½ games back. The Mets have lost 9 of 10 and find the Phillies (2 games back) and ...

Spurs better than '80s Celtics or Lakers? No way
2007-06-15 13:30:00
Now that the San Antonio Spurs have dispatched the Cleveland LeBrons in four mostly non-competitive games to sweep the NBA Finals and win their fourth title in 9 seasons, the question becomes where do the Spurs rank among the great NBA teams? Are they better than the Shaquille O'Neal-Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers teams that won three straight titles from 2000 to 2002? Probably, based on sustained brilliance. Even a member of those Laker teams grudgingly admits that.“I hate to say it, but they are probably surpassing us, to be honest,” Derek Fisher told the New York Times Wednesday. “We had that great four- or five-year period. You have to kind of step in the Bulls, Celtics and Lakers teams of the ’80s that dominat...

Giambi is Selig's scapegoat
2007-06-14 20:45:00
It shouldn't come as any big surprise that Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is apparently threatening to suspend Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees if he doesn't cooperate with the Mitchell investigation by next Tuesday.I predicted a week ago that Selig would make Giambi a scapegoat for the steroid issue. That way, he gets a victim, he gets to look like he did something about steroids, and he gets anyone else who might volunteer useful information to shut up.For him, it's a win all the way around. For baseball, for Giambi, and for fans, though, it's a farce.YouTube nonsenseGolfing buddy Bryan sent this along to me. Giants one big, happy family -- so far
2007-06-14 13:15:00
Michael Strahan likes Tom Coughlin? Is that really possible?Maybe so. At least it would seem that way judging from this comment by Strahan Wednesday at the first day of the New York Giants three-day veteran minicamp.“Coach just has a lot easier demeanor about him,” Strahan told the New York Times. “When you look at him, you don’t get tense. Before, he just was a very intense fellow. But you look at him, you feel like you can go talk to him. He’s going to come over and joke with you. “Before, we just didn’t have that rapport. As the years have gone by, the better the rapport has gotten. Guys enjoy playing for him. I can’t always say that, but now guys enjoy playing for him.”Coughlin, in his fourth season with the Giants, is making a concer...

Yankees still face daunting task
2007-06-13 18:05:00
The New York Yankees have won seven straight, 10 of 12 and have finally reached the .500 mark at 31-31.With exactly 100 games to go, the Yankees seem to have righted the ship and are pointed in the right direction."We're a lot happier going to the ballpark," Johnny Damon said. Not to put a damper on the festivities, but the Yankees still face a very daunting task if they are to continue their streak of making the playoffs every season in the post-strike era, which means 12 straight seasons. They are still 9½ games behind Boston in the AL East. Better than the 14½ they trailed by a couple of weeks ago, but still not easy to overcome. They are still 5½ games out in the wild-card race. That isn't insurmountable, but consider this: since 2001, the AL wild-car...

No trees, but Oakmont presents a tall challenge
2007-06-13 13:42:00
How do you like your golf?Do you like to watch the best players in the world make the game look easy, going unchallenged by forgiving courses and soft greens en route to shooting ridiculous four-round scores of 20-under-par or lower?Or, do you like to watch Tiger Woods and his compatriots locked in a battle of survival with a difficult, unforgiving course with hazards at every turn and rock hard, lightning-fast greens that make even the shortest putts adventurous?I'll take the latter, and that's why I think I will find the U.S. Open, which tees off Thursday, so entertaining. There is something appealing about watching the best golfers in the world be challenged to be nearly perfect on every shot, lest they wind up reduced to sometimes looking like a wee...

Spurs toying with the Cavs
2007-06-12 20:26:00
Having already dispatched with the varsity (the Phoenix Suns) the San Antonio Spurs have looked like a big bully toying with the undermanned JV during the first two games of the NBA Finals. The Cleveland Cavaliers haven't had a chance. The Cavs try again tonight, this time at home. Unless LeBron James goes wild, I don't think Cleveland has a chance. Maybe, just maybe, they win one game at home. But, you can start planning the celebration in San Antonio. Very soon, Tim Duncan will be getting sized for his fourth championship ring. The Spurs may very well sweep this series. Yanks don't miss Giambi
2007-06-12 13:22:00
Maybe New York Yankees fans should campaign for Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to suspend Jason Giambi.Yep, go right ahead there, Commish. Make your moral stance if the Giambino won't turn over names of steroid abusers to the Mitchell investigation. Suspend him. Banish him. Make him go on book-signing tours with Pete Rose. I really don't care.I don't know what is best for baseball, though it feels like Selig is trying to railroad the only player who has been somewhat honest about steroids. I do know the Yankees are a better baseball team without Giambi.Newsday columnist Wallace Matthews offers the following assessment of why Giambi's absence helps the Yankees. Without the drag of Giambi, the Yankees' lineup is rolling again. In the 10 games Giambi has missed, Abreu has hit .500 (19-for-3...

Memorable bird moments
2007-06-11 16:28:00

Are the Yanks back? Maybe
2007-06-10 15:06:00
There is much happiness in Yankee-land today.Roger Clemens was victorious in a workman-like, though not overpowering, debut Saturday against Pittsburgh. The Yankees have now won straight, 8 of 10 and appear to finally be righting the ship after after two months of listing helplessly along the bottom of the American League East standings. But, will it last? Is this the start of a terrific summer comeback in the Bronx, or a tease, a mirage destined to vanish in a sea of injuries, aging hitters and inconsistent bullpen work? Even if it's not a mirage, is it already too late?Fact is, despite the recent 8-2 stretch the Yankees are still under .500 (29-31). They have sliced four games off Boston's Eastern Division lead, but still trail by 10.5 games and need a telephoto lens to find first place. ...

Odds 'n ends as Rocket launch nears
2007-06-09 14:23:00
A few odds 'n ends heading into the weekend.• Yankees surging. The Rocket re-launches in the Bronx tonight, and Roger Clemens is joining a team that appears to be on the upswing. The Yankees, who have bumbled their way through the season's first two months, have won four straight, six of their last eight, and finally look capable of making a charge back toward playoff contention. If I was the Red Sox I wouldn't be worrying just yet, but the large pack of teams hoping for a wild-card berth has better take notice.• Way to go, Joe! Hoffman better than Mo? Please, stop
2007-06-08 12:34:00
Sportable, a blog I like very much, used the occasion of Trevor's Hoffman's 500th career save Wednesday night to declare that Hoffman is the best closer of all time.Let me rebut that argument as vehemently as I can right now. Sportable's argument is simple. Hoffman is the all-time career saves leader -- he has 80 more than Rivera -- so he's the best. Period. That argument is a boatload of crap.I've written about this before, when Sports Illustrated made the claim that Hoffman, not Rivera, was the best closer of all time. Here is what I said in this space Sept. 28, 2006. I believe each point I made still stands.Who's a better closer, Trevor Hoffman or Mariano Rivera? To me, that's a no-brainer. I'll take Rivera over any reliever who has ever stood on a mound.Of course, I am a Yankee fan so I ...
