Pro American parties have now swept to power in Canada , Mexico , Germany , Denmark , Greece , Ukraine and France. In Italy conservative Silvio Berlesconi was decisive vitcotry and... Study Abroad - Why Choose to Study at a UK University?
    2008-04-21 03:03:00
Can a quarter-million of the world’s brightest students be wrong? That’s one estimate of the number of foreign students who forsake the comforts of home and brave the UK’s food and, for many, forbidding weather to get the postgraduate education they consider the key to a bright future in their homelands. The British Council puts the total number of overseas students currently studying in Britain – at all academic levels – at nearly one million, with two-fifths of post-graduate students

Democratic candidates gain support abroad: Obama in Afghanistan, Hillary in Somalia
    2008-04-19 04:50:00
Kabul, 18 April (AKI) - (by Syed Saleem Shahzad) - US presidential candidate Barack Obama has generated broad support in Afghanistan, while Somalis would prefer to work with his Democratic rival Senator Hillary Clinton. These are the findings of a survey conducted by the international think-tank, The Senlis Council, in Afghanistan and Somalia in March and April. According to the think-tank, the results of this year's US presidential elections are "critical to both countries," as they are both "strongly affected by US policy". When asked which of the presidential candidates they would back, 69 percent of those questioned in Afghanistan favoured Obama, while 26 percent were in favour of Clinton. In Somalia, 47 percent of civilians surveyed supported Clinton, while 44 percent backed Obama.

How to Buy a Holiday Home Abroad
    2008-04-06 11:10:00
How to Buy a Holiday Home AbroadThe thought of owning a second home in the sun or a ski lodge or mountain retreat where we can escape whenever the mood takes us is of course a commonly held dream. And with the simplification of re-mortgaging facilities, the affordability of home loans and the growth in underlying equity many of us have enjoyed on our principal residences, there couldn’t be a better time to turn that dream into a reality than today. Here’s how to buy a holiday home abroad and avoid all the common traps and pitfalls that people can fall foul of. First things first you need to decide whether it make sense for you to release the equity that has built up in your principal residence to buy a property overseas, to raise a mortgage on the overseas property or to pay for it in cash. Unfortunately there is no straight answer to this dilemma! The answer will lie somewhere among your own personal circumstances, your ability to afford an extension on your home loan or an over

How to Plan Your Retirement Abroad
    2008-04-06 11:05:00
How to Plan Your Retirement AbroadA growing number of international citizens are contemplating the concept of taking early retirement, escaping the hectic monotony of the daily grind and retiring abroad in a low cost location to make the most of their retirement savings. If you'd like to live overseas to escape the high costs of living associated with countries such as American and Britain for example, this is a guide to planning your retirement abroad so that you don't run out of money, you don't run out of friends and you never lose your adventurous spirit. When contemplating retirement the majority of us seem pre-programmed to only consider the far reaching financial implications of never bringing in an income again! But the fact of the matter is that there are many more things to consider if planning on retiring abroad, not to mention the fact that many retirees overseas pick up odd jobs and part time positions advising and assisting other expatriates with their lives and businesses

    Friends Abroad
    2008-04-04 05:25:52
Last night I found out that Bugilsnews displays Indonesian Expatriates Forum (IEF) link and its widget on their site. With a few thousands of subscribers (I was told they had 10,000 readers a couple of years a go and it was when Bugils Group hasn't been crazily expanding - to how many bars now, five, six? - like nowadays, so the number might be bigger now), having the link there will hopefully spread the news about IEF. Despite what people think - especially our Indonesian friends and family back home - that life is glorious, the future is bright, and everything is nothing but sweet love if we live abroad, being away from home is always a lonely (and most of the times, shocking) journey. Only people who are in our shoes, or have experienced the same thing would understand what we are going through. Like eating live squid in Korea, for example. Or wondering why they invent a very cold fridge in Norway that freezes the veggies right away. Or finding new friends.Andrea Martins, the lady b

I'll never move abroad, says red-hot Rooney
    2008-03-05 17:24:00
'Our game has improved so much in the past few seasons,' he said. 'We've proved we have the best league in the world — which is why we attract the best players in the world. 'It's down to English players if they decide to play abroad but, for me, English football is the best. I love playing here and I'm pretty sure that'll never change.' Rooney's comments will perhaps provoke a little mirth on Merseyside. After all, the 22-year-old once vowed never to leave Everton — and promptly left for Old Trafford in 2004. But United's win over Lyon on Tuesday and Arsenal's stunning triumph in Milan have clearly got Rooney thinking about the prospects of English clubs meeting in the last eight of the Champions League — and perhaps beyond. He added: 'It'd be nice if the English teams could stay apart in the Champions League and go further. It would be a shame if we drew each other.' United were not at their scintillating best as they disposed of Lyon on the back of a 1-1 away draw an

    Why Arrange Car Hire Abroad
    2008-02-26 04:51:45
Before you make your next trip overseas, you may want to make some arrangements for car hire abroad before you arrive at your destination. Here are some reasons why taking care of car hire abroad in advance is a good idea.Planning your car hire abroad as part of your preliminary planning ensures that you can have a vehicle at your disposal before you arrive at your destination. By providing your flight information to the car hire company in advance, you make it much easier for the supplier to meet you at the airport or your hotel, whichever you prefer. International travel tends to be tiring at its best, so not having to be concerned about transportation the moment you land is a great advantage.Another reason to arrange car hire abroad before your trip is that you have the chance to do some shopping around. By comparing rates in advance, you may be able to uncover some excellent pricing. Make sure that as part of your overall car hire abroad strategy that you also investigate and suppl

Vietnam to invest more abroad in 2008 - 2010
    2008-02-13 05:13:00
Vietnam's investment in foreign countries is likely to increase to over 500 million U.S. dollars each year in the 2008-2010 period from 391.2 million dollars in 2007, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Wednesday. Earlier this year, the state-owned Vietnam Motors Industry Corporation announced a plan to invest some 200 million dollars in four projects in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. The projects involve in production of cement mixers, light trucks and motorbikes. The state-run Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group has established a representative office in Laos in preparation for exploring oil and gas there. Some other Vietnamese enterprises operating in the fields of food and wood processing, and telecommunications are also preparing to make investment abroad. Vietnamese firms last year invested a total of 391.2 million dollars overseas in 64 projects, bringing their combined investment abroad in the 1988-2007 period to roughly 1.4 billion dollars, according to Vietnam's

The Joys and Pains of Working Abroad
    2008-02-08 11:29:00
While checking online update about OFWs, I stumbled a lovely and touching article below written by Bethsaida. A typical setting where the head of the family chose to work away from his love ones for the better future of family. The joys and pains of working abroad. It was a rainy Thursday afternoon. My husband and I were deeply contemplating whether he would accept the offer to work in Saudi again or not. Just thinking about it made me shiver. I was very much against the idea of him working in Saudi again. Jerry's first trip to Saudi (he was there for two years) was not 'a bed of roses.' We've gone through a lot as husband and wife. And I say, a lot. But then, I understand Jerry's stand on the matter. He wanted to secure our future. As what most OFWs say, "Iba ang sweldo sa abroad." Half-heartedly and with eyes closed, we called his employer to give our final decision. Actually, it's been a tug-of-war decision for me and Jerry. But the plain truth had

Yank Abroad David Yelldell Is Germany's Cal Ripken
    2007-12-26 11:10:00
Twenty-six year old David Yelldell, who currently plies his trade as the starting goalkeeper of German Regionalliga side Stuttgarter Kickers, has played a Cal Ripken-esque 68 straight games for a total of 6120 straight minutes. So says Germany's kicker magazine (no affiliation with the team) in a story it published on its Web site today. How does kicker get to 6120 minutes? The article doesn't say, but Yelldell has played every one of his team's 19 Regionnalliga Süd (German third division) games this season for 1710 minutes, according to transfermarkt.de. Add to that last season's tally of 3180 minutes (2970 from 33 league games and 210 minutes--I'm assuming that includes overtime--from two cup ties) and you get 4890 minutes. That leaves 1230 minutes. Yelldell played 1844 total in 2005-06 and was sent off once, according to transfermarkt.de. I'm assuming the streak started after he earned that red card. No word on what the record is for consecutive minutes (or games) played in Germany. For all I know they don't even keep one--especially not in the Regionalliga, which is technically an amateur division.Yelldell was born in Stuttgart in 1981. I don't know how he comes across U.S. citizenship but he has never played any international matches for the U.S., though it appears he was part of the U23 player pool at one point. He did a stint for Blackburn from 2003 to 2005 mainly as the backup to Brad Friedel's backup.

MAXroam, SIM Card for Travelling Abroad
    2007-10-07 04:08:00
Selamat

How big real estate firms, often from abroad, are buying up apartment buildings in the Bronx
    2007-07-19 23:55:00
WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has a piece today on how big real estate firms, often from abroad, are buying up apartment buildings in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. Fueled by the weak dollar, foreign firms are purchasing properties "this cheap stock of housing that’s far from luxurious." But at the current rents these buildings are barely profitable (if at all), so they still can't be considered bargains even for someone buying with euros or pounds. The deals only work for the investor when they can raise the rents.

    Transitions Abroad Magazine
    2007-07-04 08:07:24
I recently picked up a copy of Transitions Abroad magazine from the travel section at a Barnes and Noble. When it comes to magazines, I’m normally sold on a full subscription, or I don’t get it at all. After flipping through some pages of this one though, I realized there was a potential wealth of info I couldn’t leave without. It retails for $4.95 per issue, or $19.95 for a year’s subscription (6 months). It turns out the May-June 2007 issue is focused on language studies. Almost all of the advertising is for volunteer, educational, and language programs abroad. Articles are written by people who have “been there, done that.” I still have quite a ways to go, however I just wrapped up an inspirational 2-page story about an American couple that decided to move to Italy and live like Italians for a year. Good news - they succeeded! A few article titles to wet your appetite: p. 46 - Why Not Paraguay? p. 50 - Experience Bolivia’s Biodiversi

Things I find ironic about military shopping abroad
    2007-06-29 17:09:00
From my friend Libby @ Diary of an Air-Force Wife - Keep up the good work overseas and give that beautiful family hugs from the pirate twins and me.As a stay at home mommy and wife shopping for the house and the family is a big part of my job. Here are some things I found to be a little giggle inducing along the way.Germany statistically rains 85% of the year, yet the BX does not carry rain jackets, rain boots or warm weather clothing. However, they do have a very wide variety of swimsuits, sandals and essential summer pool equipment. For that ever so average enlisted member sitting in the rain relaxing at their personal pool.Second, in a career field where being on time is considered late and be early is considered being on time an alarm clocks is the number one item needed in making this possible it puts a smile on face that the BX does not sell ANY type of alarm clock; they do however sell six different types of 62" screen TV's.On a base where following the US laws of car seats for children under age and weight is mandatory it is strange to see that the BX does not sell car seats. They do however sell many (MANY!) designer diaper bags.In a job where you are required to iron your uniform daily it is funny that they do not sell ironing boards here, but they do sell many different types of irons. Though you can only by milk by the half gallon you can by many types of whisky by the gallon. Even though all the floors in base housing are hardwood the BX does not sell furniture leg protectors. They do sell a very nice selection of lawn mowers (more then a quarter of base housing is apartment living). When shopping for shampoo you can find mostly what you need at the commissary but for all your conditioning needs you must shop at the BX on the other side of the base. You can find all your cookie sheet needs at the BX, but it doesn't do you any could because none of it will fit inside the oven. You can also find a very large variety of drop in toilet bowl cleaners; altho

    Russia's Bases Abroad
    2007-05-30 00:57:00
A Google News search for the phrase “resurgent Russia” brings up some rather interesting results. The phrase is used in numerous articles, many of which have titles like “Putin Thumbs Nose at West,” “US ready to 'push back' against Russia: official,” and “Why Tensions With Russia Endure”. Not to mention the number of “special issues,” “in-depths,” and “events” that make “resurgent Russia” an organizing theme. True, Russia is indeed “resurgent” both economically and geopolitically. And there is no doubt that this “resurgence” has inspired many journalists and analysts to speak about a new Cold War between Russia and the West (I especially like how the “West” is deployed as a corporate entity as if independent Western states don’t have their own interests when it comes to Russia. But that is another discussion.) And though American, European and Russian diplomats continually deny that a new Cold War is on the horizon, those denials cer
