    Going Through an Addiction Treatment
    2008-05-14 11:21:00
Compulsive cravings, seeking and attempting to use substances, specifically drugs just to obtain the euphoric feeling that helps to break away from the harsh reality of the world - this is what a person addicted or hooked on drugs feel. He has the push for drug ingestion, no matter where he is, no matter what time of the day it may be. He is having a brain disease, he is experiencing addiction. A disease that is unceasing which requires him to undergo addiction treatment. In scientific point of view, addiction may be defined as a compulsion of an individual to repeat certain kind of behavior regardless of its consequences and dangers to his health, mental state or even social life. It develops into a form of an illness of the brain within a span of time of usage. However to put it in a much simpler way, in layman's term, addiction is synonymous to devotion, dedication or even attachment to something. Oftentimes, addiction stemmed from a voluntary act which in the long run becomes unco

Holistic Addiction Treatment Program for the LGBT
    2008-04-03 07:16:21
After being in several addiction treatment programs, meeting with relase each time, I finially decided to try a holistic addiction treatment program, which was gay friendly. Think that was hard to find. It was, but I did. All I wanted in a gay friendly addiction treatment program was a treatment program specializing n “gay issues” because I still was not comfortable with my sexuality. The holistic addiction treatment program was easier. Finially, when I was about to give up I found a holistic addiction treatment program, with an addiction treatment compoent called Freedom Rings. It was perfect for me. It was an all gay addiction treatment program and seemed to provide just the right holistic services. Freedom Rings, the holistic addiction treatment program for the LGBT is located in Jacksonville, Florida and has treated thousands of members from the LGBT community. I was one of them and I have been clean for three years. After participating in the holistic treatment in the

At present it is sheer inquisitiveness that drives you to develop an addiction to drugs over time. Drug addiction means habitual use of psychoactive drugs to such a point at which the consumer of drugs has no other way out and continues to use it. Drug Addiction Treatment Rehab and My Family
    2008-02-04 07:30:23
Unless you are gay like me, you can not understand the fear associated with telling your heterosexual parents. All they ever spoke about was the day I would get married and give them grandchildren. Every tme I heard that I hit the crystal meth pipe and mellowed with alcohol. This went on for years until I realized and so did my parents that I had developed a crystal meth addiction and alcohol addiction, but that was not what I was concerned about.  I went to drug addiction treatment willingly and my parents were relieved I went to the treatment rehab. The staff at the drug addiction rehab were great and provided me with the best of drug addiction treatment, but then it hit me. This drug addiction treatment rehab had a family treatment rehab program and that was next. Well, you should have seen my family’s faces. While they were in shock, I was relieved. The addiction treatment rehab staff were great in working with my parents. By the time I left treatment rehab, we agreed that i

Drug Addiction Treatment and Alcohol Rehab Saved My Life
    2008-01-21 10:25:53
Growing up gay presented a multitude of problems for me, many of which I chose to deal with by taking cocaine and alcohol. Everything seemed so difficult to me, whether it was maintaing a relationship in the gay world, the social scene, issues with my parents or issues within myself. Cocaine and alcohol just seemed to make things easier. One problem though, I never counted on drug addiction or alcoholism. I never dreamt that I would require drug addiction treatment or an alcohol rehab program.  Not me, drug addiction treatment and alcohol rehab was for the losers. Regardless of who it was for, I needed it and within a week I was in rehab treatment. After being in drug addiction treatment for about a week I started to be introduced to other patients and their lives. It seemed as though there were more things we had in common than differences. With the exception of me being gay, we were very much alike. We all wished we had gone to drug addiction rehab sooner, none of us could stop on

Addiction Treatment for Orlando and Jacksonville, Florida
    2008-01-10 11:55:44
Orlando, Florida certainly was an interesting place to live with all the amusement attractions and clubs to frequent. Unfortunately, with all this excitement came lots of alcohol and with the alcohol came the crystal meth. After some time, although I denied it, I was suffering from an addiction to both. It wasn’t until I received my second DUI and fell down some steps and cut my forehead, that my partner insisted I get into addiction treatment in Orlando. With great hesitance, I began to research Orlando addiction treatment which could treat a gay man and wanted to treat a gay man. Addiction treatment in Orlando, Florida was really limited and especially so regarding the LGBT. I later stumbled on addiction treatment in Jacksonville, Florida for the LGBT. I was excited and scared at the same time. I would be away from my partner, I didn’t know Jacksonville, Florida and was scared what life would be like without crystal meth and alcohol. I was excited because I was going to an addiction treatment program that understood me. After a few days, I finially left Orlando and headed to Jacksonville. When I arrived at Freedom Rings I felt really welcome. This addiction treatment program was much nicer than the others in Orlando. I have to admit that it has only been four weeks since addiction treatment ended, I still think about alcohol and crystal, but I am committed to staying clean and sober. thank you to Freedom Rings and the addiction treatment staff.  Bookmark to:

Addiction Treatment in Key West, Florida
    2008-01-07 10:31:25
From what I could see, there doesn’t seem to be very much addiction treatment in Key West and even less inpatient addiction treatment that focuses on the needs of the LGBT. Yes, there are outpatient therapists, but for the individual that needs addiction treatment in an addiction treatment center there are few to choose from. There irony here is that the population in Key West, Florida is predominantly LGBT. There is a gay friendly addiction treatment center in Florida which is located in Jacksonville, Florida. This addiction treatment center, which is called, Freedom Rings, is not an entirely gay treatment center. It is an addiction treatment program which meets the needs of the LGBT community. This approach is considered more effective than the “gay only” addiction treatment approach. The general belief in the addiction treatment world is that a person’s last day in an addiction treatment program should resemble their first day in the real world. This is what Freedom Rings is all about. You can find Freedom Rings addiction treatment center at www.gay-rehab.com. We welcome our friends from Key West in advance. Types of Heroin Addiction Treatment and Opiate Addiction Treatment
    2007-12-26 06:52:10
Heroin Addiction Treatment A variety of effective addiction treatment is available for heroin addiction. Heroin addiction treatment tends to be more effective when heroin abuse is identified early. The addiction treatments that follow vary depending on the individual, but methadone, a synthetic opiate that blocks the effects of heroin and eliminates withdrawal symptoms, has a proven record of success for people addicted to heroin. Other pharmaceutical approaches, such as buprenorphine, and many behavioral therapies also are used for the treatment of heroin addiction. Buprenorphine is a recent addition to the array of medications now available for the treatment of heroin addiction and other opiate addictions. This medication is different from methadone in that it offers less risk of addiction and can be prescribed in the privacy of a doctor’s office. Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) is a combination drug product formulated to minimize abuse. The best situation to administer this medication is within an addiction treatment program for the additional support people need.. Heroin Detoxification or Heroin Detox Heroin detoxification programs aim to achieve safe and humane withdrawal from opiates by minimizing the severity of withdrawal symptoms and other medical complications. The primary objective of a heroin detoxification program is to relieve withdrawal symptoms while patients adjust to a drug-free state. Not in itself a treatment for heroin addiction, heroin detox is a useful step only when it leads into long-term addiction treatment that is either drug-free (residential or outpatient) or uses medications as part of the treatment. The best documented drug-free treatments are the therapeutic community residential programs lasting 3 to 6 months. Heroin addiction treatment programs today, generally last 40 days. Opiate withdrawal is rarely fatal. It is characterized by acute withdrawal symptoms which peak 48 to 72 hours after the last opiate dose and disappear w

Methamphetamine, High Risk Behavior and Meth Addiction Treatment Program
    2007-12-21 05:10:23
Crank, Speed, Crystal, Ice, Glass, Tina or Methamphetamine are some of the many different street names for Methamphetamine. Methamphetamine abuse and meth addiction is now considered a national epidemic. When Methamphetamine is taken into the body, large surges of dopamine are released in the brain, causing an intense rush of pleasure or prolonged sense of euphoria. Over time, Methamphetamine destroys dopamine receptors, making it nearly impossible for the addict to feel pleasure without it. This causes a vicious cycle of extreme highs under the influence of Methamphetamine and extreme lows without it.  Extended and chronic use can lead to psychotic behaviors, including paranoia, insomnia, anxiety, extreme aggression, delusions, hallucinations, and even death. Powdered Methamphetamine can be snorted, smoked, injected, diluted in drinks and swallowed or eaten whole. There are pill forms of Crystal Meth but are rare and not as widely used as powdered Methamphetamine. One year of Crystal Meth use can cause irreparable damage to the brain and body. One of the more unfavorable behaviors associated with crystal meth addiction is sexual promiscuity. An addict suffering from crystal meth addiction or meth abuse may engage in sexual acts that they normally would not do when sober. The rise in libido when high is quadruple that of the normal, average sex drive. The risky sexual behavior involved with Methamphetamine abuse or meth addiction is one of the leading contributors to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The destructive nature of Methamphetamine doesn’t stop with the addict; it stretches to all those around them, affecting loved ones and those close to them. An addict on a Methamphetamine “run” or binge can stay up for days, or in extreme cases, weeks at a time. But eventually, the addict crashes and may sleep for days to recoup the desperately needed rest. During this time, children of the addict are neglected and may find themselves having to fend fo

    Finding Our Addiction Treatment Program
    2007-12-17 05:59:14
It is one thing to find addiction treatment, but it is an entirely different story when you are looking for an addiction treatment program capable of treating a gay man or woman. Don’t get me wrong, not that we are sooo special, but when I first went to an addiction treatment program I wasn’t ready to discuss the idea that I might be gay. No way. I was to scared and ashamed. there might have been another gay man or woman for me to speak with, but that was it. The environment was much too intimidating for me. Addiction Treatment Help For me to find the addiction treatment help I needed a friend of mine told me about an addiction helpline. It wasn’t a bad idea because I really didn’t know what to ask as I was too scared to ask the question I needed to. When I called the addiction helpline they asked me a variety of questions which included whether I had a partner who was interested in the family program. I knew what they meant so I said no but I used to. It was th

Lenght of Stay in Drug Addiction Treatment Matters
    2007-12-07 09:16:05
A drug treatment program needs to address life issues outside of the drug addiction. Medical, psychiatric, social and legal problems also need to be addressed in order to provide an effective drug treatment program. Because a person’s addiction recovery process does not follow any particular course, drug treatment plans need to be adjusted based on patient progress. Changes in medication, dual diagnosis treatment or questioning one’s sexuality in the gay, lesbian arena are just some examples of changes that may take place in a drug treatment plan.   Drug treatment programs also need to take into account a person’s gender, age and culture in order to provide individualized drug addiction treatment. People with drug addictions need to stay in treatment long enough for treatment to be effective. Drug addiction research has indicated that for most people, a 6-8 stay is the minimum for effective drug addiction treatment. The longer a person stays in addiction treatment the be

Florida Addiction Treatment Program Helps Me To Be Me
    2007-12-06 18:15:14
I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and eventually moved to Orlando. It was in Orlando I began my use of crystal meth, even though I dabbled with cocaine when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale. The main reason I began using drugs in the first place was I was uncomfortable in my own skin. The more uncomfortable I got and the more pressure I felt the more meth I used until I had a crystal meth addiction. Then thing really got bad. Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment  I began stealing and prostituting myself. It became one man after another just to support my meth addiction. What I didn’t realize I was really running from was admitting to myself and claiming that I was gay. I had gotten arrested so many times in Orlando, Florida that I figured if I moved back to Ft. Lauderdale, everything would be fine. Wrong, this judge gave me two choices; jail or crystal meth addiction treatment. Stupid I wasn’t, I took the crystal meth treatment program. It was here my life turned around. Florida A

    ALCOHOLISM AND ADDICTION TREATMENT
    2007-12-05 21:49:33
There are a number of different types of treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction; some have been shown to work much better than others. With the exception of extreme cases which would make such factors as intervention and close monitoring necessary for the health, safety, and well-being of the individual or others, the best method of treatment involves the person getting the help he needs in dealing with his problem, while not being cut off from his general everyday life. In this manner, the person does not lose sight of the fact that daily life goes on and he is to be a part of it, while at the same time being able to give his recovery process the attention that it needs. For most alcoholics and addicts, Twelve-Step meetings and mental health counseling provide sufficient basis for recovery. With these aids, he can begin to deal with both his substance dependency and the emotional or mental factors which also cause him difficulties. As it is a common problem for some people to become entirely too dependent on his or her “Program” to the extent that he or she has little life beyond it, mental health counseling can assist the person in achieving the necessary balance. For example, if the person does not associate with anyone who is not “in the Program,” or his everyday vocabulary consists almost solely of 12-Step Program slang, or if he cannot make even the most basic decisions in his daily life without checking it out with his Sponsor, these are clear indicators that he does not have the necessary balance in his life. While for a recovering alcoholic or addict their program plays a very important role in his life, it is essential that he know that life itself is not a program. The recovering alcoholic or addict needs to have his own role in his own life. Depending on the individual and his circumstances, this includes such factors as holding a job or running one's household. While those who have just begun recovery are cautioned to not make

Gay Drug Addiction Treatment and Substance Abuse
    2007-11-25 06:12:07
Gay Drug Addiction Gay drug addiction and crystal meth abuse is especially dangerous because of the close relationship between gay drug addiction, crystal meth, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Gay men are still the highest risk group for HIV, and gay intravenous drug users have two methods of contracting or transmitting the virus, through sexual contact or infected needles. While clearly not all gay addicts are intravenous drug users, gay addiction is still dangerous because drug and alcohol use lowers inhibitions and often results in poor choices that have physical and social consequences. Also of special risk are gay drug user’s especially crystal meth abuse that frequent the “party-n-play” scene, where the likelihood of regrettable sexual choices under the influence is high. These are just a handful of the issues related to gay substance abuse Gay Drug Addiction Treatment Gay drug addiction treatment or substance abuse treatment can take on several different

Sex Addiction Treatment in a Rehab Center
    2007-11-24 16:29:35
Who Suffers From Sexual Addiction? Over 80% of sex addicts report physical, sexual, or psychological abuse in early childhood years.  Many people who become sexual addicts grew up in normal homes, but lacked attention or sufficient affection from loved ones, and later in life sought that affection erroneously through sexual behaviors.  There are a variety of causes for sex addiction, but more surprising is the manner in which sexual addiction affects the lives of addicts.  Many sex addicts lead outwardly normal lives, having a spouse, family, stable jobs, and appear to be normal everyday people.  The reality is for many sex addicts; a secret life of sexual behaviors is putting themselves and their loved ones at risk, and gains more and more dangerous potential with each impulsive act.  Sex addicts are common people and do not stand out with noticeable signs, that may be present in drug or alcohol addiction.  Sex addicts often feel shame and guilt even more so than drug or alcohol

A Gay Friendly Physician Needs to Understand Addiction Treatment
    2007-11-10 10:29:03
There are quite a few physicians that market themselves as “gay friendly” in an effort to attract the LGBT population for the treatment of medical problems. One problem that are sure to see is drug addiction or alcoholism. It becomes their responsibility during any exam to address the drug addiction or alcoholism and offer them a referral to addiction treatment. Most physicians are not trained in addiction medicine and the LGBT community has a higher prevalence of drug addiction and alcoholism then the heterosexual population. This means the gay friendly physician needs to do their best to assess the patient and refer them on for addiction treatment.  The ideal situation is for the patient to continue to see their primary physician after addiction treatment as there will be a great deal of trust and honesty between the two.  This provides for quality healthcare. To find a gay friendly physician or gay friendly doctor, just google the terms or if you feel you suffer from d

Drug Addiction Treatment Information for the LGBT
    2007-10-19 17:11:15
It’s difficult to be gay in a straight world, so it’s no wonder that so many individuals who deem themselves to be gay or are uncertain about their sexuality search for drug rehabs that offer gay and lesbian therapy. Great care should be taken in locating an addiction treatment center who specializes in gay therapy.  Beware of a drug rehab who may attempt to “cure” or even “convert” you.   Those addiction treatment centers have their own agenda. Also be sure that your chosen drug rehab is well-versed on issues confronting the gay community and isn’t afraid to talk about sexual issues.  It’s best to contact local or regional organizations concerned with gay issues to find a reputable drug rehab program for your needs. Drug addiction treatment for the gay and lesbian population should consist of a number of factors and how you’re counseled may depend on where you stand as far as accepting your sexuality. Most gay friendly drug rehabs rely on the widely-accepted six stages of homosexuality: 1) identity awareness – feelings that you are different from others or from what you’ve been taught; 2) identity comparison – not understanding why your feelings are different from those of your parents, friends, siblings, etc; 3) identity tolerance – rebelling against homosexual feelings; 4) identity acceptance – embracing your sexuality and what goes with it; 5) identity pride – anger toward parents, society, religion or others who refuse to accept your homosexuality; and 6) identity synthesis – when homosexuality becomes a part of who you are, not the defining factor for your life. The therapists should also be prepared and able to discuss and treat mood disorders, not unlike those of the heterosexual population, including depression, anxiety, stress, and sexual issues.  Statistics show that the rate of depression is much higher among the homosexual population and that thoughts of suicide are not uncommon. Gay and lesbian therapy can also assist clients in “coming out” to friends, family, and co-workers and deal with the emotional and practical questions and challenges that arise at that time.  Therapists will also attempt to eliminate feelings of fear and being alone and teach clients how to develop healthy homosexual relationships. To locate a gay friendly drug rehab you can call the addiction treatment helpline at 1-800-511-9225. Bookmark to:

    Addiction Treatment for the LGBT
    2007-10-09 17:03:02
Cities such as Miami, Ft.Lauderdale, Key West,  New York, Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco all have a large gay and lesbian population. As such, there are many many services specific to the gay population. Services such as travel agency, physicians, therapists and nightclubs are available to the LGBT and easy to find. The same can not be said about addiction treatment, alcohol rehab or drug rehab programs. These are few and far between even though there is a high percentage of the LGBT that suffer fromdrug addiction, alcoholism and dual diagnosis. The cities mentioned are located in Florida, New York, Illinois, Georgia and California and these states should do more to support the health of the LGBT. While each of these states have a drug rehab in each city, the rehab is not necessarily equipped to effectively treat a gay man or woman. While Florida does have a  gay drug rehab and gay friendly drug rehab, New York, Illinois and Georgia need to support the development of the same rehab services. Don’t misunderstand, if yo are gay, you do not have to be in a “gay only” rehab, but it will help support your recovery to be in addiction treatment that can help you deal with issues relating to the LGBT community. To locate gay friendly addiction treatment call 1-800-511-9225 and we will be happy to assist you. Bookmark to:

    Understanding Addiction Treatment
    2007-10-07 21:05:13
Many people view drug abuse and drug addiction as strictly a social problem. Parents, teens, older adults, and other members of the community tend to characterize people who take drugs as morally weak or as having criminal tendencies. They believe that drug abusers and addicts should be able to stop taking drugs if they are willing to change their behavior. These myths have not only stereotyped those with drug-related problems, but also their families, their communities, and the health care professionals who work with them. Drug abuse and addiction comprise a public health problem that affects many people and has wide-ranging social consequences. It is NIDA’s goal to help the public replace its myths and long-held mistaken beliefs about drug abuse and addiction with scientific evidence that addiction is a chronic, relapsing, and treatable disease. Drug addiction does begin with drug abuse when an individual makes a conscious choice to use drugs, but addiction is not just “a lot of drug use.” Recent scientific research provides overwhelming evidence that not only do drugs interfere with normal brain functioning creating powerful feelings of pleasure, but they also have long-term effects on brain metabolism and activity. At some point, changes occur in the brain that can turn drug abuse into addiction, a chronic, relapsing illness. Those addicted to drugs suffer from a compulsive drug craving and usage and cannot quit by themselves. Addiction treatment is necessary to end this compulsive behavior. A variety of approaches are used in addiction treatment programs to help patients deal with these cravings and possibly avoid drug relapse. NIDA research shows that addiction is clearly treatable. Through a addiction treatment program that is tailored to individual needs, patients can learn to control their condition and live relatively normal lives. A quality addiction treatment program can have a profound effect not only on drug abusers, but on society as a whole by significantly improving social and psychological functioning, decreasing related criminality and violence, and reducing the spread of AIDS. It can also dramatically reduce the costs to society of drug abuse. Understanding drug abuse also helps in understanding how to prevent use in the first place. Results from NIDA-funded prevention research have shown that comprehensive prevention programs that involve the family, schools, communities, and the media are effective in reducing drug abuse. It is necessary to keep sending the message that it is better to not start at all than to enter rehab if drug addiction occurs. Bookmark to:

Drug Addiction Treatment and Alcohol Rehab
    2007-10-06 13:54:15
No single drug addiction treatment is appropriate for all individuals. Matching treatment settings, interventions, and services to each individual’s particular problems and needs is critical to his or her ultimate success in returning to productive functioning in the family, workplace, and society. Drug addiction treatment needs to be readily available. Because individuals who are addicted to drugs may be uncertain about entering rehab, taking advantage of opportunities when they are ready for treatment is crucial. Potential treatment applicants can be lost if treatment is not immediately available or is not readily accessible. Effective rehab attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. To be effective, treatment must address the individual’s drug use and any associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. An individual’s addiction treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure that the plan meets the person’s changing needs. A patient may require varying combinations of services and treatment components during the course of treatment and recovery. In addition to counseling or psychotherapy, a patient at times may require medication, other medical services, family therapy, parenting instruction, vocational rehabilitation, and social and legal services. It is critical that the treatment approach be appropriate to the individual’s age, gender, ethnicity, and culture. Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The appropriate duration for an individual depends on his or her problems and needs. Research indicates that for most patients, the threshold of significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment. After this threshold is reached, additional treatment can produce further progress toward recovery. Because people often leave rehab prematurely, programs should include strategies to engage and keep patients in treatment. Counseling (individual and/or group) and other behavioral therapies are critical components of effective treatment for addiction. In therapy, patients address issues of motivation, build skills to resist drug use, replace drug-using activities with constructive and rewarding nondrug-using activities, and improve problem-solving abilities. Behavioral therapy also facilitates interpersonal relationships and the individual’s ability to function in the family and community. Medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies. Methadone and levo-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM) are very effective in helping individuals addicted to heroin or other opiates stabilize their lives and reduce their illicit drug use. Naltrexone is also an effective medication for some opiate addicts and some patients with co-occurring alcohol dependence. For persons addicted to nicotine, a nicotine replacement product (such as patches or gum) or an oral medication (such as bupropion) can be an effective component of treatment. For patients with mental disorders, both behavioral treatments and medications can be critically important. Addicted or drug-abusing individuals with coexisting mental disorders should have both disorders treated in an integrated way. Because addictive disorders and mental disorders often occur in the same individual, patients presenting for either condition should be assessed and treated for the co-occurrence of the other type of disorder. Medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use. Medical detoxification safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal associated with stopping drug use. While detoxification alone is rarely sufficient to help addicts achieve long-term abstinence, for some individuals it is a strongly indicated precursor to effective drug addiction treatment. Alcohol rehab does not need to be voluntary to be effective. Strong motivation can facilitate the treatment process. Sanctions or enticements in the family, employment setting, or criminal justice system can increase significantly both treatment entry and retention rates and the success of drug treatment interventions. Possible drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously. Lapses to drug use can occur during alcohol rehab. The objective monitoring of a patient’s drug and alcohol use during treatment, such as through urinalysis or other tests, can help the patient withstand urges to use drugs. Such monitoring also can provide early evidence of drug use so that the individual’s addiction treatment plan can be adjusted. Feedback to patients who test positive for illicit drug use is an important element of monitoring. An alcohol rehab should provide assessment for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, and counseling to help patients modify or change behaviors that place themselves or others at risk of infection. Counseling can help patients avoid high-risk behavior. Counseling also can help people who are already infected manage their illness. Recovery from drug addiction can be a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment. As with other chronic illnesses, relapses to drug use can occur during or after successful treatment episodes. Addicted individuals may require prolonged treatment and multiple episodes of drug addiction treatment to achieve long-term abstinence and fully restored functioning. Participation in self-help support programs during and following treatment often is helpful in maintaining abstinence. Bookmark to:

    Addiction Treatment for Men
    2007-10-05 16:50:21
Addiction Treatment  for Males Mens addiction treatment traditionally has relied on a confrontational approach. In searching for a way to help more men achieve and maintain recovery while staying focused on the time honored 12 Step philosophy, we have found that a carefrontational program is more effective in male-specific residential treatment. Examining our societal values, and learning how to create a safe environment in which men can explore and address their issues has led to thinking about sustained recovery for men in a new way. Traditionally, in drug rehab for males, the issues specific to gender were not addressed, yet these were the issues that often led to recidivism: inability to communicate, isolation, anger. Men suffering from drug addiction have been affected by many societal causes. Gender-stereotyping behavior from adults sets the stage for the Boy Code, in which emotions need to be kept in check, violence is an acceptable response to emotional upset, self-esteem relies on power, and that all feminine qualities must be rejected (Pollack, 1999). Boys may put down as sissies if they cling and clamor for the closeness they need (Goldberg, 1976). Boys are traditionally taught to stuff emotions and are conditioned to not feel or express pain, grief, or hurt. The feelings of love, joy, and excitement can also get numbed. Anger, though, often is permitted and encouraged, especially cultivated through team sports where the goal is to beat the opponent as severely as possible. Boys learn that men are expendable, a commodity readily traded for God and country (Keen, 1991). Few boys survive childhood without some form of physical or emotional trauma, often through the aggression of their peers. Boys may learn to trust no one, and that they should know how to take care o and fix everything. With addiction treatment for men also emerges “gay friendly” drug rehabs which more effectively focus on the needs for the LGBT community within a men’s rehab. Drug Addiction Treatment and Addiction Recovery
    2007-09-18 18:19:41
Drug Addiction Treatment and Addiction RecoveryAdmission is necessary as the first step in the management of drug addiction. After admission to rehab, the addict needs a complete evaluation. This is done by interviewing the patient as well his family members and close friends. The evaluation is done for two purposes: 1. To determine the causes resulting in drug addiction. 2. To determine the degree of their motivation to participate in drug addiction treatment. Immediate and complete withdrawal of drug addiction results in extremely distressing and even dangerous withdrawal symptoms. The drug should be, therefore, gradually withdrawn over a period of time in a drug detox program. Sometimes, the drug is substituted with another drug having similar effects but which is less harmful. In any case, drug detox needs to be medically monitored while the patient is in rehab. Management of Dual Diagnosis In case of an associated mental disorder, dual diagnosis treatment is started along with th

Drug Addiction Treatment - Do I Need It?
    2007-09-17 18:28:44
I don’t know, why you asking? If you are asking if you need drug addiction treatment because your drug use is starting to cause more problems in your life, then maybe you’ve answered your question. If it were only that easy. One thing about people who have become chemically dependent is we want to continue to use as much as possible, as long as possible. We will make up fantasies, stories, and what really amounts to insane rationalizations to convince ourselves that is OK to keep on with our addictive use, despite the growing wreckage around us. When it gets to the point where considering drug addiction treatment the stories and fantasies we have surround ourselves with have begun to crack. Reality sets in. We become aware that we need more and more drugs to get high, or worse yet they have stopped working. The time between drug use episodes has gotten shorter and shorter and when we’re not using we are sicker and sicker. These are indications of classic drug addicti

What does treatment in an alcohol rehab program and drug addiction treatment look like?
    2007-08-17 13:01:38
What does an alcohol rehab program look like? There are many differences between people with drug addiction problems, which make it impossible to give a clear general, answer to this question. Globally, alcohol rehab and drug addiction treatment is as follows: In the first place, there is an interview on admission. In this conversation, the therapist determines what is going on and if there is really a drug addiction. This conversation usually takes an hour. However, sometimes more admission interviews need to take place to get a clear picture of the problems and the person. Additional research may be necessary after this conversation; this is usually done with questionnaires. An example of such a questionnaire is the EuropASI, which determines the severity of the drug addiction. Depending on the impression of the interviewer and the preference of the addict, a drug addiction treatment plan is made. This addiction treatment plan contains your data, the goals of the addiction treatment

Addiction Treatment for the LGBT Addiction treatment for a gay man or woman should be no different than for anyone else some people say. While we do not disagree, a therapist will have to be familiar with how to address issues such as homophobia, internalized homophobia, coming out and others. This requires special training and education so as not to reproduce shame and alienation on the part of the patient. Secondly, the drug rehabs that want to effectively treat the gay and lesbian, should pr

Crystal Meth and Drug Addiction Treatment
    2007-05-29 19:44:26
George Kolodner, a board-certified addiction psychiatrist, said his clinic saw an increase in crystal meth addiction beginning about two years ago, but the trend has not accelerated since then. He said crystal meth users are the most difficult patients to treat because there is no medication to prevent craving or treat the protracted post-use symptoms, such as dysphoria, or depressed mood. “‘With other substances,’ said Kolodner, ‘we can help people get off and keep off by decreasing their cravings. With crystal meth and cocaine, we don’t have that.’” What are the differences in how crystal meth affects the body from cocaine, and, from a medical perspective, is it more damaging than cocaine? George Kolodner: Crystal Meth and cocaine affect the body in very similar ways. in lab studies, people can not usually tell the difference. except that the effect of meth usually lasts longer than does cocaine. Medical effects and legal consequences are very separate issues. What fact

Why Managed Care Took Control of Addiction Treatment
    2007-05-22 14:15:18
Psychotherapy in its beginnings was to be done by a therapist who was also in her/his own therapy as a protection or screen against unhealed healers. Over the years, and especially after addiction was classified a "disease" by the same people slated to make money from this classification, therapists could instead go to a school, take classes, get degrees, and become instant "healers".The therapy was let go as not needed. The classification of addiction as a disease meant that large amounts of insurance money could now flow to the mental health/addiction fields. The most common therapy method used was also the cheapest to provide--talk therapy. Humans generally love talking about themselves and addicts especially liked talking ad infinum about how misunderstood they were by most everyone who had ever known them. The only emotion that helps the addict to get well is the ability to see how the addict hurt others. This is called remorse. Of course, being an addict, this first stage will

    Ecstasy Addiction Treatment
    2007-05-17 16:04:26
Ecstasy Addiction Treatment MDMA (3, 4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), commonly referred to as Ecstasy, is a psychoactive drug possessing stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. MDMA possesses chemical variations of the stimulant amphetamine or methamphetamine and a hallucinogen, most often mescaline. MDMA was first synthesized in 1912 by a German company possibly to be used as an appetite suppressant. Chemically, it is an analogue of MDA, a drug that was popular in the 1960s. In the late 1970s, MDMA was used to facilitate psychotherapy by a small group of therapists in the United States. Illicit use of the drug did not become popular until the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ecstasy is taken orally, usually in tablet or capsule form, and its effects last approximately four to six hours. Users of the drug say that it produces profoundly positive feelings, empathy for others, elimination of anxiety, enhancement of the senses, and extreme relaxation. Ecstasy is also said to suppress the nee
