    2008-07-18 16:12:00
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood behavioral disorder. ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. This informative video animation shows possible causes and treatments.ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD used to be known as attention deficit disorder, or ADD. In 1994, it was renamed ADHD. The term ADD is sometimes still used, though, to describe a type of ADHD that doesn't involve hyperactivity.ADHD is a medical condition that affects how well someone can sit still, focus, and pay attention. People with ADHD have differences in the parts of their brains that control attention and activity. This means that they may have trouble focusing on certain tasks and subjects, or they may seem "wired," act impulsively, and get into trouble.Symptoms and Signs of ADHDAlthough ADHD begins in childhood, sometimes it's not diagnosed until a person is a teen — and occasionally not even until someone reache

    Wort fails to curb ADHD
    2008-06-11 08:57:00
Children and teens with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder fared no better on St. John's wort than they did on dummy pills in a U.S. government study, another blow for herbal supplements. St. John's wort, pine bark extract and blue-green algae are among commonly used herbal treatments for children with ADHD. They appeal to parents who want to avoid stimulants like Ritalin and other drugs

    ADHD and Meds
    2008-05-30 09:47:33
Before beginning this response to a reader question, let me say that I have dropped off kids for the next-to-the-last-time this year this morning. Next week I will do it once and then be on my way to visit my parents. I also just returned from the YMCA to check my blood sugar and had the lowest since I started checking regularly in February.I had a reader ask what I thought about medicating kids at age four and it took me back in time 8 years to about this time of year.Dominyk was in special education preschool at the time and Wow, was he a handful. He’s 12 now and still, as I have been posting, cannot sit still or keep quiet, but at 4. Oh....my.....gooodness. He was a perpetual moving object. Anyway, I was at the Fitness Center and I have no idea why, but I was using the fitness center phone to talk to his preschool teacher. Thinking then that Dominyk would always be our youngest, I knew that I was only months away from having all the kids in school all day everyday (we had a

If You Do Not Believe in ADHD...

you should have been with me for the past 40 minutes. Even heavily medicated, Dominyk simply cannot self-regulate. He goes on and on and on. Tonight I left the house at 5:45 after a quick supper which was preceded by a trip to the YMCA. We went to drop Ricardo off at his soccer game in the rain, then dropped Jimmy off at the Y, and then Dominyk, Wilson and I went to the Festival at their school. Talk about a zoo. Hundreds of kids and parents spending way too much money on games and food I can’t eat. (sorry for sounding cynical, but I have attended at least one of these for the last 11 years and somewhere along the line, probably about 10 minutes into the FIRST ONE, they lost their appeal). Anyway, it finally got over at 8 and we had to go back to get Ricardo from his game. (This one parent, one vehicle, one driver, 8 kids thing is getting annoying). We had to wait 15 minutes in the van for them to finish playing in the pouring rain and then go back to the Y to pick up JImmy.

Study: Meditation Against Attention Deficits Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
    2008-05-29 08:40:07
By Alvaro FernandezIn The Huffington Post Travel back, in your mind's eye, to a time when you felt a healthy exhaustion after hiking, biking, playing sports.., and let you re-live that moment as vividly as you can. Then, remember, re-experience, a loving exchange that really touched you. Pause. See your partner. See the moment. Smell it. Hear what happened around you.Next, visualize the most caring gesture you have ever received, as full of details as possible. Who gave you that gift of caring. How you felt. Now, travel to the most magnificent place you have seen. Enjoy the views. Pause. Listen. Smile. Appreciate.Congratulations. You have trained your brain. As Newsweek's Sharon Begley explained recently:But now neuroscientists have documented how "mere" thoughts can also sculpt the brain. Just thinking about playing a piano piece, over and over, can expand the region of motor cortex that controls those fingers; just thinking about depressive thoughts in new ways can dial down activity i

Adult ADHD - What is Adult ADHD Really
    2008-03-06 21:10:00
Whilst ADHD seems to be a condition that afflicts children mainly, it also occurs in a minority of adults. These individuals are usually highly intelligent, and it can be a frustrating and disheartening experience for them. ADHD is able to strike in these adults as their high level of intelligence makes their tasks appear to be boring, and subconsciously write off the jobs that they are engaged in. The human mind is organized in such a way as to be capable of having multiple thoughts running across it simultaneously. This can sometimes be difficult to cope with as the mind is unable to rank the thoughts in order of importance. Especially for those who are highly capable, the torrent of thoughts that the mind has to process at any one time make it difficult to capture focus on, and hence results in frustration. The biggest problem with ADHD in adults is that they are able to hide their condition, as they feel that it is a weakness or something to be ashamed of. However, it is important

ADHD Drugs Won't Raise Risk of Substance Abuse
    2008-03-01 21:36:00
(HealthDay News) -- Parents of children who are prescribed psychostimulants for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might have one less thing to worry about now that a new study concludes these kids are no more likely than their peers to abuse drugs and alcohol as young adults. The report, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, is published in the March issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry."The results should reassure clinicians who might be hesitant to treat ADHD because of concerns about future substance abuse," said study co-author Michael C. Monuteaux, assistant director of research at the pediatric psychopharmacology program at Massachusetts General Hospital.Past research looking for a link between ADHD medications and substance abuse has produced conflicting conclusions."Some previous studies showed an increased risk of substance abuse associated with stimulant treatment, and other studies showed both no association and also a protective effect f

    ADHD Thoughts
    2008-01-13 11:03:00
I read this article in the news and again in Merritt's blog. Bascially the article states that ADHD is just a matter of maturity of the brain. And that it will get better as the child ages. And that early parenting can add to the problems of ADHD. You can read the details for yourself. Here is my deal. I have a daughter with ADHD amongst many other acronyms. But we opted at the age of 4 to

    Parenting An ADHD Teenager
    2007-05-27 19:07:00
My son, WesleyI, myself, have an ADHD son. He has overcome so many obstacles but fortunately was diagnosed at a very young age and was immediately put on Ritalin in the 3rd grade but over a period of time outgrew it and was eventually put on Straterra which seemed to be a wonder drug for us. We really struggled, especially with me being a single parent. My son was so lost not understanding what was going on inside of him and since he has come into his teenage years he has seemingly grown out of it a great deal but it is not to say he will not struggle with it somewhat the rest of his life. So, I have decided to share some information that will hopefully help other parents who may be dealing with ADHD teenagers themselves for it is as very challenging disorder for any parent. All teenagers can suffer from extreme mood swings and defiant outburts, but with ADHD teenagers they can tend to be more extreme and parents can be left extremely drained and wondering how they will get through eac

    ADHD Teens
    2007-05-21 19:50:00
Most Americans will never have firsthand of grappling with a psychological disorder, though it does appear that psychological disorders are becoming more commonplace. For children with a psychological disorder, it can be especially difficult for them to acknowledge their disability. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most pervasive psychological disorders for children. An ADHD teen will display their symptoms in a variety of ways. Three of the more common symptoms that an ADHD teen will display are hyperactivity, difficulty exhibiting impulse control, and physical unrest. An ADHD teen might, for example, twitch or shift restlessly during a long class lecture, interrupt a teacher’s question because they have a comment which they feel is of vital importance, or a penchant to ramble in a seemingly incoherent manner. Quite often, these behaviors are misinterpreted by family and faculty alike. They mistakenly believe that the ADHD teen is exceptionally self-cent

NCP Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD
    2007-05-14 02:36:00
DSM-IV 314.00 ADHD predominantly inattentive type 314.01 ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type 314.01 ADHD combined type 314.9 ADHD NOS This disorder is associated with inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive behavior that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level. This behavior creates clinically significant impairment in social/academic functioning. Accurate diagnosis is difficult, as symptoms resemble depression, learning disabilities, or emotional problems. The diagnosis is made through extensive observation of the child’s behavior; however, contact with health professionals is limited and the child’s activity may be misleading during short office visits. Reports from parents and teachers are often used to make the diagnosis, and their observations may be distorted, as they assume a problem exists and often predetermine the diagnosis themselves. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics The child with this disorder has impaired ego development. Ego development is retarded and manifested impulsive behavior represents unchecked id impulses, as in severe temper tantrums. Repeated performance failure, failure to attend to social cues, and limited impulse control reinforce low self-esteem. Some theories suggest that the child is fixed in the symbiotic phase of development and has not differentiated self from mother. Genetic/Biological The disorder may be gender-linked as the incidence is higher in boys than in girls (3:1). ADHD is also more prevalent among children whose siblings have been diagnosed with the same disorder. Recent studies have established that the fathers of hyperactive children are more likely to be alcoholic or to have antisocial personality disorders. Affected children have shown the presence of subtle chromosomal changes and mild neurological deficits with irregular brain function including too little activity in the area that inhibits impulsiveness. Hyperactivity may result from fetal alcohol syndrome, congenital i
