Seattle homeless, advocates camp out in protest
    2008-06-09 16:20:28
OK, it's bad enough that since April, when Mayor Nichols signed the order, homeless encampments can be broken up with 72 hours' notice. Homeless people are offered "help" and their belongings are stored for 60 days. BUT if you are kicked out of one camp and move to another, no 72 hour grace period for you, and this time your belongings go in the trash. That's just one of the reasons why 150 homeless people and their allies camped out at the City Hall Plaza last night. Seattle may have 1,000 beds for homeless single people, but another 100-300 homeless people are camped out in the city and its surroundings. The Mayor says he plans to provide another 20 beds-- better than nothing, but far from enough.Last night, Women in Black read the names of 283 homeless people who have died outside since 2000.This morning, fifteen people were arrested for pitching a tent in the middle of Cherry St., demanding an end to business as usual. You can go to Real Change, a community newspaper which also

    Metadata Advocates
    2008-05-08 09:58:00
I had an Ah-Ha moment while listening to John Udell's show Interviews with Innovators. The episode was Working with Data Sources with Raymond Yee.Raymond Yee is a lecturer at the UC Berkeley School of Information and the author of Pro Web 2.0 Mashups: Remixing Data and Web Services. In this conversation he talks about teaching students how to work with existing data sources, and speculates with Jon Udell on ways to expand the supply of available sources. What struck me was that we should be advocates for metadata standards. If the local geneology society puts up a calendar on their website, help them get it into iCal or hCal format. Then we could drop their info into a pathfinder. Or geocoding the local bird-watchers sightings, or school district's lunch menu, or .... We could offer our understanding of the importance of standards and data reuse to our community. The library benefits by becoming the go-to-place for information management. The community benefits because they get the word

Senior Citizen Advocates Think Social Security Increase Not Much Help with Medicare Increases
    2007-10-17 22:34:41
Oct. 17, 2007 – Most news reports emphasized the smallness of the Social Security COLA for 2008 – a monthly increase of 2.4 percent – while most advocacy groups were bemoaning the small increases in Social Security income matched against the growing costs of Medicare for senior citizens. George Bush Finally Advocates Fiscal Responsibility by Threatening More Vetoes
    2007-10-16 00:31:13
After the Republicans were voted out of office in 2006, George Bush has been able to do what many conservatives have asked him to do for years: Veto excessive spending. Not only did George Bush rightfully veto the SCHIP program, because of the devastating effect it would have on our future economy, but this week he threatened Congress with additional vetoes unless the Democrats cut their budget. Yes, $2.9 trillion is excessive.I am personally thrilled by this news. Finally, George Bush is acting like a Conservative, rather than a Compassionate Conservative (a.k.a. Huge Liberal). The question now is whether this is too little too late?Bush already was responsible for the Medicare Part D plan, which added another massive Government entitlement to our budget. So there is nothing Bush can do until the end of his term to make up for that mistake. However, this is a great start. The problem of fiscal irresponsibility all stems from Washington, D.C. When Republicans go to Washington, D.C., they often fall prey to the notion that the American people all think they are evil when they cut spending. In truth, the American people are not stupid. The American people know that cutting spending means that some people will not receive government assistance. However, Republicans who stand by principle are reelected while Republicans who support increases in spending for fear that the MSM will attack them got ousted in 2006 election.Although many pundits argue that the 2006 election was a vote about Iraq, that is only partially true. In reality, many conservatives stayed home because they had nobody to vote for. If you were a voter in 2006 whose main principle was fiscal responsibility, you likely had a choice between a Republican who would cut taxes and raise spending and a Democrat who would raise taxes and spending. It was a losing situation. Now that George Bush is fighting the Democrats on fiscal issues, however, this may lead to devastation for the Democrats in 2008. Political savvy Republicans are not going to be swayed by the MSM’s smear of George Bush for not wanting to support “the children.” Instead, the Conservative base will turn out in high numbers to remove those fiscally irresponsible Democrats from office who cannot control spending. Let us hope the Republicans remain strong over the next few weeks and refuse to overturn Bush’s veto.Related EditorialsBudget Deficit Update. . .United States Budget Deficit Is At Its Lowest Level in 5 Years: Liberal Experts SurprisedDianne Feinstein is a Big Fat Pig: Congressional Pork-barrel Spending/ Earmarks are Out of Control under Nancy PelosiBull-SCHIP!!!! UK Thinktank Advocates 'Two-Child Policy" To Combat Climate Change
    2007-07-12 11:36:18
According to the report, published by the Optimum Population Trust, Britain's high birth rate is a major factor in the current level of climate change, which can only be combatted if families voluntarily limit the number of children they have. The report calls for a 'two-child' policy in the UK that would reduce the nation's population from 60 million, as it currently stands, to no more than 55 milllion by 2050. read more Bookmark/Search this post with: delicious | digg | reddit | technorati

Privacy Advocates Attack Google and DoubleClick Merger
    2007-06-09 00:10:00
On June 7th the San Francisco Chronicle published an article about the growing privacy concerns related to the planned Google and DoubleClick merger. According to the article a coalition of privacy groups have requested that federal regulators "prohibit the merged companies from compiling detailed dossiers about users' online behavior."It would be a rare case for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to consider privacy implications when ruling on the merger (since they usually deal with fair trade concerns) but this precedent may be worthwhile due to the considerable personal dossiers expected to be combined by the two companies. How Big is Too Big?One question is ever present in my mind when considering Google's continued acquisitions spree - at what threshold does a company get so big that government involvements (i.e. regulation) is unavoidable? I don't like the idea of any part of the Internet being regulated but if Google keeps this growth up, at some point it will call this unfo

Seniors Advocates Explore Ways To Guard Against Elder Abuse
    2007-06-06 14:00:00
By Keith Vass The Chronicle British ColumbiaHow do you respond when an adult you know is being abused, taken advantage of or neglected?A legal workshop held Thursday aimed to help people who work with seniors or those who cannot tend to their own needs find the answer to that question.“It’s something the public is not aware of, it’s not something we talk about,” says Pat Edge, seniors coordinator at the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association.Abuse can take a variety of forms, from neglect, to physical, emotional and financial.Edge says even she had to go through a rude awakening about the reality of elder abuse.“I did not believe there was any abuse of seniors until I got involved in the community and talking to them.” more information on handling elder abuse, visit the Community Respone Network online at www.bccrns.ca, or call the Ladysmith Resources Centre 245-3079.

He hasn't had to cook or order takeout for six months. Heck, he hasn't eaten anything at all.
