The Proteas, at tea on the second day, were 262 for four in reply to England's 203, a lead of 59. Prince was 100 not out, following his 101 in the first innings of the drawn first Test at Lord's, and AB de Villiers 44 not out. Author: Cricky Posted: Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:10 pm Surprise debutant Darren Pattinson took his first wicket for England but South Africa were still closing in on England's first innings total in the second Test at Headingley here Saturday. The Australia-raised pace bowler, in for injured Nottinghamshire colleague Ryan Sidebottom, had the dangerous Hashim Amla lbw for 38 but that was the only wicket the Proteas lost in the morning session. At lunch, South Africa were 158 for four, a deficit of 45. Ashwell Prince was 34 not out and AB de Villiers seven not out. Top Five: Places to see in South Africa
    2008-07-15 08:01:00
There is lots to see in South Africa, but here are what I consider to be the most important or the most important. The following are in no particular order...5) The Big Five4) The Garden Route3) The Drakensburg Mountains2) Cape Town1) The Wild CoasThe Big Five in Kruger National Park. There are also a number of other game parks, and they really do offer the same thing. Most of the parks you can enjoy nice accommodations and the Big Five, as well as many other of South Africa's native species. The Garden Route is a wonderful way to spend a week...or two...or four. There are lots of beautiful stops and plenty of interesting things to see [and do] along the way. Many of the towns are nestled right along the ocean and many also have gorgeous national parks very close by.The Drakensburg Mountains are a must if you can get yourself out to the north-eastern portion of the country. Absolutely breathtaking with its lush expansiveness and rather treacherous roads. Rumor has it that they were the

Cina-Africa: Il gigante cinese sta divorando le risorse africane
    2008-07-15 06:15:25

240 Alfas set World Record at Kayalami track in South Africa
    2008-07-06 13:28:00
The Alfisti in South Africa turned out in droves for Alfa Romeo Kyalami Day, setting a new world record for the most Alfas on the track at once. The record – which mirrors the one set by Ferrari at Silverstone last year – required 200 vehicles, but the organizers got no fewer than 240 Alfas to hit the Kyalami circuit (former host of the South African Grand Prix) at once. Nearly 7000 visitors (excluding staff) were in attendance, while the parking lots filled up with over 2300 cars. The day also marked the first occasion, believe it or not, when the new 8C Spider was shown in public since its unveiling back in March at the Geneva show. Unfortunately, that's likely to also be the last time the 8C Spider is in the country, as the 500 examples being produced won't be offered there. However, Fiat Auto South Africa – the country's Alfa Romeo importer – also brought out the full array of current models, along with a display of 18 classic Alfas, including one driven by JFK. The number of people returning to Britain with a potentially fatal form of malaria has risen sharply because travellers are not taking antimalarial drugs, health officials said yesterday.Cases of falciparum malaria now account for three-quarters of all UK malaria, up from a third of cases two decades ago, according to a Health Protection Agency study. The majority of malaria occurs among migrants who become infected while visiting west Africa where the disease is endemic. Many do not take antimalarial pills because they believe they are already immune.

Africa's Shame and Zimbabwe's Greater Threat
    2008-06-23 10:57:52
The recent assault by armed government gangs, leading to dozens of deaths and hundreds of encarcerations, has led the opposition in Zimbabwe to withdraw from the electoral process. The striking inability of Tabo Mbeki in South Africa and other sub-Saharan African nations and institutions (the Africa Union, for example) is a shameful episode that has set the continent back for decades. But there are reasons other than human rights and the rule of law to be concerned about Zimbabwe and its meglomaniacal...(read more)

News: When Green goes Commercial: the new colonization of Africa
    2008-05-31 16:14:02
More than a century after the last “scramble for Africa”, when European powers fought to colonise the continent, there is a new stampede into one of the world’s biggest areas of uncultivated terrain.Last year, by one estimate, the government of Mozambique received bids from foreign investors to buy 110,000 square kilometres of land, more than an eighth of the entire country. In neighbouring Tanzania, a Swedish company, is bidding for 50,000 hectares on the banks of a lake in the Rufiji province. And that is just one example. Why? A rush from European companies to grow biofuel.(Full)It begs to think if agrable land can not be used for better purposes. Using the same two examples: Tanzania has more than 40 percent of the population in chronic food-deficit regions where irregular rainfall causes recurring food shortages. Mozambique has 660,000 vulnerable people in need food assistance, and suffers from yearly flooding displacing hundreds of thousands of people.More about biofuel on Th

Friday, May 23rd, 2008: Scamming scammers from Africa from Helsingborg
    2008-05-22 18:08:00
What I think:OK, so I haven't been the best blogger for the past year or so. I haven't provided my adoring public (of four people) with the regular, constant, entertainment they had come to expect from me.And for that I apologise. At this point, I really don't want to make any promises I can't keep, so I will say this: I will massage any grandmothers from Boise, Idaho, who see this blog entry and answer within the next two days (offer valid from May 23rd until the 25th, 2008). And I will make an effort to blog a bit more frequently. OK?At this point, however, I would just like to share with you a little e-mail conversation I had with an e-mail scammer today, probably from Nigeria (in Africa), but I can't be sure. It touched my heart. You wanna know what it said? It said:I am Miss.Hamiya Ibrahim the only Daughter Of Mr And Mrs Aziz Ibrahim from Ivory Coast. I am an Orphan being that I lost my Parents. This lad started to send scam emails as a woman, already on second day "she" asked for money and wanted to come and marry "me". But as he all the time was sending pics, taken from internet, there were no chances for good trophies. So I changed the scenario, and wrote about art-school and art foundation, which supports young artists from the third world countries. We just

Apr. 27 South Africa - Freedom Day
    2008-04-26 21:50:00
Today, South Africa celebrates the 14th anniversary of freedom. It's the commemoration of the first democratic election on 27 Apr. 1994, and the last phase in the dismantling of a decades-old evil system of separation, suppression and dehumanisation. After years of struggle against the apartheid system of white minority rule and international pressure, Nelson Mandela is released in 1990. After painstaking negotiations, political parties finally agree on 27 April 1994 as the date for South Africa's first multi-racial elections, giving the country's majority black population the right to vote for the first time. The elections were the first non-racial, democratic elections where everyone of voting age of over 18 from every race group was allowed to vote.

P. no Grieķijas lika pārfotografēt, savādāk Mr. Ilarijs nebūs apmierināts...

    2008-03-19 15:19:00
The nice aspects of African customs and traditions we are familiar with to one degree or another. In fact state media often speak about the good aspects to the point of overdoing it. So my highlights here tend towards the critical aspects.Smuggling goes everywhere. Fuels are one, for instance. They come in all sorts of containers: Jerry cans, soda bottles. The author describes the phenomenon as "shortage compensated by excesses everywhere. Quality and reason are luxury when these stomach cries." What he meant was that there is fuel in excess in the major cities and towns, with shortages in peripheral areas prompting smuggling.
