    2008-02-29 05:37:54
African American Hair BraidingWith the pace of the modern world and the ease of instant gratification, African American Hair Braiding styles seem to be an excellent option as it is a low maintenance hair-do. Perhaps the reason that so many youths flock to hair braiding as their favorite style option is due to the fact that it’s easy to manage and it comes in great styles. The popularity of African American Hair Braiding styles has surpassed race. In other words people other than those of African American descent also try these Hair Braiding styles. Pin Curls, Candy Curls, Bantu Knots, Fishtail Braids, Flat Twist, Locks and Undetectable braid and Cornrow Extensions, Invisible Braids, Tree braids, Senegalese Twist, Silky Locks, Interlock Weaving, Latch Hook Weaving, Silky Corkscrew, African Twist, Kinky Twist, Two-Strand Twist, Nubian Corkscrew, and Cobra Stitch. Perhaps the most difficult part of braiding is learning to keep the tension on the strands as evenly balanced as possible. H

    A South African Feast
    2008-02-04 02:33:00
Although I have never been, I have always had a bit of a love affair with South Africa. Back in my singing days I almost had the opportunity to play Carmen in Johannesburg, but unfortunately it fell through. At the time I did a lot of research and was thrilled at the thought of living in such a diverse and historic place, if only for a month or two. Going to an international school meant I had several South African friends as well. They have the most beautiful accent, a soft lilting melody that just makes me smile.Given my obsession passion for food, this was obviously a big part of my research. I remember loving the sound of Bobotie, a dish that every South African has their own version of, perhaps a bit like our own Shepherd's Pie. I used to read a lot of Wilbur Smith and this dish would come up in his books as well. I love the history of the dish. I can just imagine the first European settlers discovering wonderful new flavours and spices in Africa and coming up with this un

African Cats - Green Motion - Fossil Free Electric Propulsion
    2008-01-14 21:06:41
African Cats has some nice looking production catamarans. What really interested me was their "Green Motion" line of hybrid drive systems. They seem to really emphasis regeneration of power while under sail with the idea of oversizing the motor so that they can better regenerate. They also have wind generators, RIBs, and several other products that might be worth a look. Their web page is a bit "pdf happy" in my opinion (only use pdf when you really need to, please!), but still has a lot of info. WELCOME ABOARD AFRICAN CATS! We build comfortable lightweight performance leisure catamarans thru epoxy resin infusion for sailing enthusiasts that demand the highest levels of performance, comfort, speed, security and reliability. Our secret? We employ a no-compromise approach to boat design and construction that spans the gamut from materials and techniques to beauty and ergonomics. On our site you can see who we are, what we do, how we do it and why. Enjoy and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions! We think you’ll agree after your visit that our slogan 'African Cats: If you want it all…'

SOUTH Africa's James Kingston claimed his first European Tour title when he won the South African Open by one stroke at Pearl Valley Golf Estates. The 42-year-old has won four times on the Asian Tour and nine times on the Sunshine Tour, but has finished runner-up on three previous occasions on the European Tour.Kingston saw off England's Oliver Wilson to win by a stroke after his one under par final round. The South African finished on four-under for the tournament. His victory also ensured the trophy stayed in the republic for the eighth straight year.Kingston started the final round one stroke behind Wilson, who lost the lead on the first hole after a bogey five.Steady drizzle fell throughout the day, calling for composure and patience from the leaders, whose tee-off times were delayed by three-and-a-half hours.Despite Wilson dropping two more shots on the front nine, Kingston was unable to break free as he found the water on the par-three fourth hole for a double bogey and als

African American hair style ideas for proms and wedding
    2007-12-04 00:54:00
Wedding updos are a great choice for a blushing bride for several reasons. First of all, wedding updos are long lasting when created properly. Let’s face it, a wedding day is a long day filled with hustle and bustle. The last thing a bride wants to worry about is keeping her hair out of her face or keeping it combed and brushed. In addition, hair that is left out and natural has a tendency to lose its style quickly. Wedding updos, on the other hand can last the entire day and evening without a problem.Creating Bun-Style Wedding UpdosWhen styling bun-style wedding updos, it is best to allow your hair to go 8-24 hours since its last washing. This allows the natural oils of the hair to build up a bit, which will help make it easier for the bun to hold. This will result in a tighter and longer lasting style. For the bride who insists on washing her hair before styling, it is necessary to dress the hair thoroughly with gels, hairsprays, or other products to prevent the strands of hair from being too slippery or soft. The first step in creating bun-style wedding updos is to brush the hair thoroughly and remove all tangles and knots. To create smooth and sleek bun-style wedding updos, it is best to next create sections of hair about 1-2” thick and smooth them with a flat iron. The hair should be allowed to cool before moving to the next step. After the hair has cooled, it should be brushed once again. All of the hair needs to be brushed from the hairline into a high ponytail in the middle of the crown. The ponytail should be secured with a band that is the same color as the bride’s hair.Next, the ponytail needs to be lifted high into the air and the hair needs to be smoothed while keeping the ponytail tight at the base. It might be necessary to add some light gel or setting lotion on fine hair or on hair that is slippery or otherwise doesn’t hold well. This way, it will be better anchored. In addition, the hair will need to be sprayed down or gelled before adding acc

    An African Advantage in Athletics?
    2007-05-30 08:23:00
Ken Stone from Masters Track writes with a challenge: "OK, here's a subject that should generate interest: Are sprinters descended from West Africa naturally superior to all others? Are distance runners with roots in East Africa naturally superior to all others?"Thanks for the question Ken. This is a sensitive and controversial topic. Author Jon Entine, in his book Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports and Why We're Afraid to Talk About It (PublicAffairs, 2001), writes that, "anyone who attempts to breach this taboo to study or even discuss what might be behind the growing performance gap between black and white athletes must be prepared to run a gauntlet of public scorn, survival not guaranteed."Even so, the proof would seem to be overwhelmingly in the affirmative. This article from 2002, discussing the positive impact of black athletes in the sport of bobsledding states that "athletes of West African ancestry... hold 494 of the 500 top, all-time, 100-meter times." 2007-05-08 02:23:00
The Cafferty File, part of The Situation Room on CNN, poses a question every hour The Situation Room is on. This is today's 7:00 question, and Thoughts on the World's response.------------------------------------------------------------7 p.m.: When it comes down to it, would American voters elect another Republican president before they would elect a woman or a black? Is the majority of America sexist? No. Is the majority of America racist? No.99% of people have no problem with electing a woman or a black; the media only portrays it that way, making the situation worse. A woman almost became president in France; why couldn’t one in the U.S.?

    Long-blooming African violets attract new
    2007-01-19 07:00:00
Fortwayne Sure, Grandma grew African violets. Their sweet frilly petals decorated windowsills and grew under lights in countless basements across America in the 1940s, '50s and '60s. Some of the old faithful varieties are still around. But there are also unusual African violets with smooth petal edges, sophisticated coloring think green-and-violet stripes and variegated leaves. Steve and Donna Turner of Southgate, Mich., hope those features will convince people shopping for houseplants to take another look at African violets. Like that in many plant clubs and societies, membership in African violet groups is down compared to 30 or 40 years ago, Steve Turner says; he and his wife are "the babies" among club members. 2007-01-09 07:18:00
New "African Path" blogThe African Path web site has launched. African Path is created to fill a void in the marketplace for a strong Pan-African web site where news content and blogging can be merged into a unified voice. A lot of African bloggers are discussing issues relevant to the continent but online exposure to these blogs is limited. African Path aims to provide this much needed exposure. We aim to fill the void left by big media in covering information on Africa and providing a forum in which Africans can discuss issues concerning themselves both within and outside the continent. The African Path website features news headlines from global and major African media houses, an ever growing group of bloggers covering various topics and an interactive calendar for events taking place in different cities worldwide.Topics featured on the site include current events, politics, technology, religion, music, entertainment, sports, health, human rights, AIDS, democracy and much more. The site will share experiences inherently African from daily accounts of people within the continent, Africans in the Diaspora and foreigners who have visited Africa. The site will promote dialogue on issues being discussed and encourage the participation of all site users through comments, letters to the editor, and new blogger recruitment. Special programs will be created to promote dialogue and exposure of work on the continent conducted by human rights groups and not-for-profit organizations aiming to provide solutions to improve living standards, health, technology, leadership or education.
