    Afterlife
    2008-04-14 23:30:00
After dying in a car crash, three friends go to Heaven for orientation. They are all asked the same question, "When you're lying in your casket, and friends and family are mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say about you?"The first guy immediately responds, "I would like to hear them say that I was one of the great doctors of my time, and a great family man."The second guy says, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in the children of tomorrow."The last guy thinks for a moment, and then replies, "I guess I'd like to hear them say, ' Look, he's moving!'"

    Pets Afterlife
    2007-06-19 15:02:54
Across time and cultures, many religions have taught that animals are at least partially souled. The word animal derives from the Latin anima, meaning ’soul’. After your pet die, will your pet rise again? Some people say yes. And there are some who have doubts whether animals really have souls. Aristotle maintained that both man and animals had souls but that animals were sentient beings whose mortal souls consisted of instinctual sensations. Human were rational beings with immortal souls. St. Francis of Assisi, the Catholic Saint known for his love of animals, believed that animal souls were immortal. Some churches hold ceremonies, known as “blessing of animals’ in honour of St. Francis. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, spoke of the eternal souls of animals too. Most pet owners don’t really seem to care much what religions say, but some people are very affected when their religion claims that pets do not have souls. According to animal c

    Pondering the afterlife
    2007-05-11 01:05:00
For whatever reason, the notion of an afterlife has (apparently) existed throughout human history in one form or another. Perhaps, even in the primeval ages nonexistence was too much for people to comprehend so they developed metaphysical paradigms to shield against the anxiety. In ancient Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, the person was thought to continue existing after death as a ghost restricted to the netherworld. Death was accepted as final, even then. Once one descended down the path of no return, there was no leaving the netherworld. Gilgamesh’s quest for immortality was averted, the unequivocal rationale being that immortality was reserved for the gods.More recent notions of the afterlife, such as heaven and hell, no doubt help alleviate existential anxiety and counter the injustice witnessed in the world. Heaven provides a future place for the good to be rewarded and to have a happy existence despite whatever suffering they might have been dealt on earth. An eternal paradise eases the mind to the often brutal and fleeting reality of life. Hell, on the other hand, assures judgment, rectification for what goes unpunished on earth. It is too difficult to deal with a life where the rain ultimately falls both on the good and evil. Certainly fortune may smile on the wicked and unjust, but one knows, in the end, people will get their due and the incongruity of life will be amended in eternity. An underlying assumption behind such concepts of the afterlife is that human beings possess an eternal soul, a spiritual nature which survives death and continues perpetually in some über-reality. If this is the case, and if this soul is truly eternal, then why didn’t this soul exist before birth? Can something logically be eternal if it has a point of origin, a beginning? Theistic belief in an eternal God is rooted in the premise that God always has been and will continue to be, although, it probably can be argued that the conferral of God’s image and likeness
