Oil costs will push some Asian airlines under
    2008-06-11 11:24:00
RECORD-HIGH oil prices have sparked the biggest crisis in the Asian airline industry since the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) scare, and analysts say some carriers are likely to go under if prices do not let up soon. They say many of the region's airlines are ill-prepared to cope with the price surge, which saw oil top US$139 (S$190.75) per barrel last week amid wide expectation prices will only keep rising in the months ahead. 'No one is going to escape this crisis unscathed', said Mr Derek Sabudin, an analyst from the Sydney-based Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation consultancy. He said airlines face a 'severe shakeout' if extremely high fuel prices continue, with the industry already coping with the fallout from a US-led global economic slowdown. 'Carriers will be exiting the market', Mr Sabudin said. 'The weaker ones will go, and stronger carriers will shrink in size, if we see prices where they are above US$120 beyond the summer peak.' Mr Shukor Yusof, an aviation anal

Fewer, pricier flights and job cuts: airlines' response to oil prices
    2008-06-08 03:48:00
PARIS - AS oil prices soar, airlines are coming back down to earth with a bump - cutting routes and capacity, ramping up prices and axing jobs as bosses freely admit the industry is in the 'worst crisis since 9/11.'Oil prices on Friday broke through the US$139-a-barrel (S$190) level for the first time in New York and US$138 in London, powered by a wilting dollar.A weakening US currency lowers the cost of dollar-priced goods, such as oil, for foreign buyers and drives up demand. With sober analysts such as Goldman Sachs suggesting the price could reach US$200 a barrel within two years, the aviation industry appears to be in a nose-dive.Airlines are particularly susceptible to hikes in the oil price, as jet fuel makes up a substantial part of their operating costs. For customers, already facing escalating food prices, and, at least in Europe, rising inflation and higher interest rates thanks to a credit-crunch, the effect is likely to be steep rises in ticket prices.'The industry needs to

Should Airlines Just Start Closing Up Shop?
    2008-06-05 10:55:00
I've never owned my own business and to be honest, in today's world with all the possible problems that can occur, I'm not sure I would want to. My deepest admiration to those who stay afloat these days. But something occurred to me last night. After watching the news and seeing several consecutive reports on how bad the Airline Industry is being hit, led me to ponder a simple question. What exactly, is keeping some of these businesses from simply closing up shop and calling it quits? I don't believe there's an enforceable law anywhere that mandates they have to stay in business. The customer is not always right, and most often, is definitely in the wrong. Yet, airlines have to deal constantly with frivolous complaints. Some of the most ridiculous things too, like the famed Naomi Campbell incident. Or the mom currently suing an airline because her kid is allergic to peanuts, and there were peanuts on board the plane. How about girls that (quite wrongly) believed they were harassed by the

    Eos Airlines Files for Bankruptcy
    2008-04-27 12:05:16
Eos Airlines Inc., a transatlantic, all-business-class airline, filed for bankruptcy protection over the weekend and said it will shut down Sunday, becoming the fourth U.S. carrier to go out of business this month. Rising fuel prices, tight credit markets and the slowing economy are wreaking havoc on all U.S. carriers. But smaller, less well-funded companies are proving unable to withstand the challenges. Aloha AirGroup Inc., ATA Airlines Inc. and Skybus Airlines Inc. ceased operations earlier in April and Frontier Airlines Holdings Inc., filed for bankruptcy protection but continues to operate. Closely held Eos, based in Purchase, N.Y., earlier this month said it expected to receive $50 million in new capital from a current investor, "financing needed to take us to corporate profitability in 2009," the company said at the time. But the company said Saturday it was unable to close on the financing, leaving it with insufficient cash to continue operating. Eos said it planned to operate

So my family picked up our luggage and carried it over to Gate 41. Not ten minutes later the public address voice told us that Flight 570 would in fact be boarding from Gate 35.So again we gathered our carry-on luggage and returned to the original gate. Just as we were settling down, the public address voice spoke "Thank You for participating in the Airlinr's physical fitness program."

Multi leg flights and low cost airlines
    2008-04-17 23:05:00
The typical low cost airline operates on a point-to-point basis. Costs are kept down as there are no bags to check through to another flight, and no waiting for connections due to delayed flights. Some of the low cost airline networks have become so big though that passengers independently book multi leg flights to get to where they want to go as it still works out cheaper than booking through a scheduled airline. There is the risk that if your first flight is delayed and you miss the connection you will lose your second flight, but if you are savings hundreds of £/€/$'s, it is a gamble I know many take.Tigers Airways offers the ability to booking two flights in the one booking session with their Flight Combo service. This is a great idea as it saves you having to work out if both flights you need are available and you save an extra booking fee.Tiger Airways Destination MapOn the Tiger Airways network possible combination examples include:Melbourne - Darwin - SingaporeDarwin

Skybus Airlines goes bust - cancels all flights!
    2008-04-05 06:43:08
"All aboard! $10 a seat, and enjoy the flight!" Ten bucks only? What sort of airline were they contemplating. Cheap's not the word. It was certainly not a "robust business model". That will come later when those that were running the airline plead innocence, saying they did in fact have a "robust business model". This is business-speak for "we hadn't a clue"! One analyst said, "They had a dumb model". More like it.The only people to benefit were those who flew whilst the cheap fares lasted. But what of money for maintenance and security? Doesn't bear thinking about, does it?The free market is supposed to weed out those businesses that don't offer good service or properly made products. However, it must be up to the regulatory authorities to keep at bay moronic types masquerading as entrepreneurs and business operators. The customer may be in control over purchase decisions but a decision leading to unforeseen disasters and pecuniary misfortune should be avoided.Skybus Airlines may have

Why Nationwide Airlines should look towards social media
    2008-04-03 15:52:05
Since the announcement of Nationwide Airlines being grounded in December last year, I haven’t really been a fan of the airline, preferring to fly with SAA, British Airway or Kulula when it comes to local travel (albeit that my return flight from Cape Town yesterday on Kulula was anything but pleasant). However, during the Nationwide [...]

Delta and Hawaiian Airlines Team Up On Frequent Flyer Benefits
    2008-03-18 16:13:00
The reasons for the imbalance are not far to seek. Delta's program is far larger than Hawaiian's, so Hawaiian was no doubt troubled by the prospect of hordes of SkyMiles members cashing in their miles for free trips to Hawaii, always one of the most popular destinations for award travel.Still, Delta has its own flights to Hawaii, and the ability to use Delta miles for Hawaiian flights between the islands is a plus for SkyMiles members, albeit a small one.For members of Hawaiian's program, on the other hand, the addition of Delta is nothing less than a giant step forward.
