All you do is take it out of the package, place a 9 volt battery in it and set it on the floor.I tested the device by placing it on the basement floor and putting a couple of drops of water next to it. Because of the weakness of the case in the area where the watchband pins insert, I have now gone through three of these plastic models. The second model cost four times as much as the plastic model above and the Timex I now wear. It was a truly beautiful watch but the alarm setting mechanism was poorly engineered and difficult to use. The vibration intensity was inadequate, about the same as the Timex model. In both of the metal models this vibration weakness is a result of the heavy weight of the cases--a virtue if one is only interested in durability. The Timex I now wear came with a metal band of excellent quality. It may be that the alarm would be more effective with a lighter leather band. This watch also has a black face--quick and easy to read in daylight but perhaps not as effective with indiglow illumination as a white face would be. But even with its faults it's a nice watch and I would order it again. After using this watch for over six months, I've found that the "weak vibration" will now wake me from a normal sleep.I have apparently conditioned myself by setting an audible alarm to wake me two to three minutes after the vibration goes off. Most of have a love and hate relationship with our Alarm Clock. For me its mostly hate as I despise the jarring sounds I have to wake up to! That is why I like the Thanko vintage-style MP3 Clock, which looks like an ordinary alarm clock but has a MP3 Player embedded in it! Meaning you can get up listening to your fav songs! Of course in my case it would have a reverse effect and I‘ll end up hating music than appreciating getting up!
