Drug Alcohol Rehab and a Gay Man
    2008-02-05 05:52:25
I was looking for a drug alcohol rehab program in New York and the more I looked the more confuse I got. There were drug alcohol rehab programs, drug alcohol detox and drug alcohol detox programs. It seemed like the end was never in sight. Add to that I was looking for a drug alcohol rehab to help me with “coming out” and it made the decision even harder. Then I found a drug alcohol rehab in Florida, which was obviously far away from new York, but it did provide treatment for the gay and lesbian community which was attractive to me. As much as I didn’t want to leave New York, I didn’t want to live my life in fear. I also didn’t want to be a slave to my crystal meth addiction either. This drug alcohol rehab seemed to have excellent staff credentials and clnical services. I am happy to say, I am gay and proud of it today. My crystal meth addiction is no more and I decided not to return to New York as of now. It is amazing what my crystal meth addiction did t

Drug Addiction Treatment and Alcohol Rehab Saved My Life
    2008-01-21 10:25:53
Growing up gay presented a multitude of problems for me, many of which I chose to deal with by taking cocaine and alcohol. Everything seemed so difficult to me, whether it was maintaing a relationship in the gay world, the social scene, issues with my parents or issues within myself. Cocaine and alcohol just seemed to make things easier. One problem though, I never counted on drug addiction or alcoholism. I never dreamt that I would require drug addiction treatment or an alcohol rehab program.  Not me, drug addiction treatment and alcohol rehab was for the losers. Regardless of who it was for, I needed it and within a week I was in rehab treatment. After being in drug addiction treatment for about a week I started to be introduced to other patients and their lives. It seemed as though there were more things we had in common than differences. With the exception of me being gay, we were very much alike. We all wished we had gone to drug addiction rehab sooner, none of us could stop on

Alcohol Detox Programs and Alcohol Rehab Treatment
    2007-12-23 18:14:17
Alcohol Detox Programs If you are suffering from alcoholism and need alcohol detox, you need to find a medical detox program. A medical detox for alcoholism is the best way to ensure your safety during the alcohol withdrawal phase. Trying to go through alcohol detox without medical assistance can be life threatening, so we strongly encourage you to find a safe medical detox program. Alcohol detoxification or medical detox is the first step of the alcohol treatment process, Withdrawal is the term used to describe the body’s reaction to the removal of the alcohol it has become dependent upon. Alcohol detoxification is the first step because until the physical dependency issue is taken care of, no other form of alcohol rehab treatment will work. Through a combination of detox medication and a relaxing and professional environment alcohol detoxification can be easier to tolerate. Until the alcohol detox process is complete, someone is just not ready for alcohol rehab treatment. Therefore, the ultimate goal of medical detox is managing alcohol withdrawal symptoms and assessing the individual’s need for ongoing alcohol rehab treatment.. Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms While in an Alcohol Detox Program Symptoms can range from mild to quite severe. Mild reactions in you might experience while in a alcohol detox program can include tremors, headaches, vomiting, perspiration, restlessness, lose of appetite and insomnia. More serious effects one can experience in an alcohol detox program can be Delirium Tremens (DT’s), autonomic hyperactivity and seizures (convulsions). It has been estimated that 1 in 4 patients are at high risk of a withdrawal seizure if not medically treated during alcohol detox.  You can find an alcohol detoxification program by calling 1-800-99-DETOX. Alcohol Rehab Treatment is the Solution Most people who complete a detox program are in need of further residential treatment. This type of alcohol rehab is referred to as alcohol rehab treatment.

Texas Alcohol Rehab; Alcohol Rehabilitation and the LGBT
    2007-11-21 13:56:21
Alcohol rehab in Texas is provided on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Texas alcohol rehab also provides dual diagnosis treatment for many of its patients. The aspect of alcohol rehabilitation in Dallas, Ft. Worth or even Houston does not seem to focus heavily on providing compehensive alcohol rehabilitation for the LGBT. Don’t misunderstand me, alcohol rehabs treat the gay and lesbian population but have not really designed programs for them and their partners. Family recovery in an alcohol rehab generally consists of the significant other, mom, dad etc. In the gay and lesbian community it would be focused on the patient and their partner. This is only an issue in the Texas alcohol rehab where other family members have not dealt with their homphobic attitudes, which unfortunately is the majority of the population. It is treatment elements such as this which makes it more productive for alcohol rehabs that provide treatment for the LGBT to carefully look at their recovery needs

Drug Addiction Treatment and Alcohol Rehab
    2007-10-06 13:54:15
No single drug addiction treatment is appropriate for all individuals. Matching treatment settings, interventions, and services to each individual’s particular problems and needs is critical to his or her ultimate success in returning to productive functioning in the family, workplace, and society. Drug addiction treatment needs to be readily available. Because individuals who are addicted to drugs may be uncertain about entering rehab, taking advantage of opportunities when they are ready for treatment is crucial. Potential treatment applicants can be lost if treatment is not immediately available or is not readily accessible. Effective rehab attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. To be effective, treatment must address the individual’s drug use and any associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. An individual’s addiction treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure that the plan meets the person’s changing needs. A patient may require varying combinations of services and treatment components during the course of treatment and recovery. In addition to counseling or psychotherapy, a patient at times may require medication, other medical services, family therapy, parenting instruction, vocational rehabilitation, and social and legal services. It is critical that the treatment approach be appropriate to the individual’s age, gender, ethnicity, and culture. Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The appropriate duration for an individual depends on his or her problems and needs. Research indicates that for most patients, the threshold of significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment. After this threshold is reached, additional treatment can produce further progress toward recovery. Because people often leave rehab prematurely, programs should include strategies to engage and keep patients in treatment. Counseling (individual and/or group) and other behavioral therapies are critical components of effective treatment for addiction. In therapy, patients address issues of motivation, build skills to resist drug use, replace drug-using activities with constructive and rewarding nondrug-using activities, and improve problem-solving abilities. Behavioral therapy also facilitates interpersonal relationships and the individual’s ability to function in the family and community. Medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies. Methadone and levo-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM) are very effective in helping individuals addicted to heroin or other opiates stabilize their lives and reduce their illicit drug use. Naltrexone is also an effective medication for some opiate addicts and some patients with co-occurring alcohol dependence. For persons addicted to nicotine, a nicotine replacement product (such as patches or gum) or an oral medication (such as bupropion) can be an effective component of treatment. For patients with mental disorders, both behavioral treatments and medications can be critically important. Addicted or drug-abusing individuals with coexisting mental disorders should have both disorders treated in an integrated way. Because addictive disorders and mental disorders often occur in the same individual, patients presenting for either condition should be assessed and treated for the co-occurrence of the other type of disorder. Medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use. Medical detoxification safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal associated with stopping drug use. While detoxification alone is rarely sufficient to help addicts achieve long-term abstinence, for some individuals it is a strongly indicated precursor to effective drug addiction treatment. Alcohol rehab does not need to be voluntary to be effective. Strong motivation can facilitate the treatment process. Sanctions or enticements in the family, employment setting, or criminal justice system can increase significantly both treatment entry and retention rates and the success of drug treatment interventions. Possible drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously. Lapses to drug use can occur during alcohol rehab. The objective monitoring of a patient’s drug and alcohol use during treatment, such as through urinalysis or other tests, can help the patient withstand urges to use drugs. Such monitoring also can provide early evidence of drug use so that the individual’s addiction treatment plan can be adjusted. Feedback to patients who test positive for illicit drug use is an important element of monitoring. An alcohol rehab should provide assessment for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, and counseling to help patients modify or change behaviors that place themselves or others at risk of infection. Counseling can help patients avoid high-risk behavior. Counseling also can help people who are already infected manage their illness. Recovery from drug addiction can be a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment. As with other chronic illnesses, relapses to drug use can occur during or after successful treatment episodes. Addicted individuals may require prolonged treatment and multiple episodes of drug addiction treatment to achieve long-term abstinence and fully restored functioning. Participation in self-help support programs during and following treatment often is helpful in maintaining abstinence. Bookmark to:

Alcohol Rehab Could be Avoided by Talking To Your Young Kids
    2007-10-03 04:52:51
Some worrisome statistics strongly suggest we need to change how and when we present the facts about alcohol to our kids - it's a lot more dangerous than most people think, and we need start telling them about it a lot younger. Too many kids are trying alcohol at the middle school level, and researchers say alcohol is dangerous to developing brains. It also makes it more likely they'll become alcohol abusers later in life and wind up needing alcohol rehab. Some of these statistics are alarming:* By the eighth grade, about 40 percent of American students say they've had some alcohol* About 10 percent of fourth-graders and 29 percent of sixth-graders say they've already tried alcohol* Roughly 47 percent - nearly half - of people who began drinking before age 14 became dependent on alcohol later in their lives. Which means that if you allow alcohol before that age, there's a 47 percent chance they'll need alcohol rehab.* Only 9 percent of those who began drinking at age 21 or older became dependent on alcohol.* 35 percent of Texas sixth-graders had drunk alcohol at least once* 18 percent of fourth-graders surveyed in Texas had drunk alcohol at least once* 9 percent of 9- to 12-year-olds in a national survey said they'd had more than a few sips of alcohol* 4 percent of sixth-graders in a national survey reported that they had drunk alcohol in the past month* In the U.S. today, there are nearly 18 million people who need alcohol rehab and it's likely that at least half of them began drinking when they were under 21 - probably way under 21.These are only a few of the statistics that are driving an ongoing study on children's use of alcohol by University of Pittsburgh Medical Center professor John Donovan. His findings that link alcohol dependency to the age one starts drinking agree with many other researchers. And he has found that kids are trying alcohol a lot younger than most people think, which may be even more likely to lead to alcohol addiction and the need for alcohol rehab in their later teens or 20s."Parents should know that even when they give children alcohol in family contexts, there is still a risk that their children would be more likely to be involved in problematic use later on," Donovan said.Parents need to talk to their kids and make sure they understand the dangers. In a statement last March announcing the "National Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking," Acting Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu said that kids who start drinking before age 15 "are five times more likely to have alcohol-related problems later in life."He also said new research indicates that alcohol harms the developing adolescent brain. Just imagine what it's doing to an 8 or 10-year-old's brain. And liver disease, a consequence of alcoholism historically seen only among middle-aged people, has begun to appear in young adults in their 20s.It's time for parents to take action: the consequences of not doing so could result in your kid becoming alcohol dependant or addicted and needing alcohol rehab. Parents with young children should use the following topics as a guide to talk to their kids about alcohol:1. Explain what "dependency" means. Get some examples.2. Explain that the younger someone starts drinking alcohol, the more likely they are to become dependent on it. It's an addictive substance.3. Explain that alcohol is actually poison (look it up if you don't believe me). Young bodies need food, water and fresh air, not poison, or they will not develop properly.4. Give examples of what alcohol addiction can do to behavior, robbing people of the desire and ability to achieve their goals. Don't sugar coat it, but don't scare them into nightmares, either.5. Tell them that people with a real alcohol dependency can almost never stop drinking on their own, and that they'll ruin their lives and the lives of everyone around them, even people they love, unless they can get through an alcohol rehab program that helps them recover their senses.Kids whose parents talk to them about drugs and alcohol are less likely to become alcoholics. Talk to them now, and you could avoid having to get them into an alcohol rehab program later.Rod is a freelance writer that contributes articles on health.info@drugrehabreferral.comhttp://www.drugrehabreferral.comFind an Alcohol Rehab Program

    Alcohol Rehab Centers and Treatment
    2007-10-01 15:20:51
Alcohol Rehab Because of the viciousness of alcoholism and it’s potentially fatal withdrawal symptoms, professional and medical assistance is necessary to begin and complete the recovery process.  These factors have increased the demand for alcohol rehab centers worldwide.  There are a plethora of alcohol rehab centers available for alcoholics to receive the help they need to recover from alcoholism.  Inpatient alcohol rehab generally takes place in more of a hospital setting for those alcoholics suffering from severe alcoholism and withdrawal.  Outpatient alcohol rehab is considered lower intensity rehab, generally serving alcoholics who do not have such a severe problem and can endure a mild withdrawal process, returning home at day’s end.  There are also residential alcohol rehab centers that are in more of a home setting where the alcoholic lives with other alcoholics and addicts in a sober home.  All three of these alcohol rehabs employ counselors and addiction therapists to aid in the recovery process for the alcoholic. Depending on the severity of the addiction, an alcoholic may need to stay in rehab for a minimum of 30 days, which is the average length of time for most programs.  Many addicts need to remain in rehab for a periods of several months.  Each addict and alcoholic has different needs to suit their individual addiction and any other co-occurring mental disorders.  Many times addicts and alcoholics suffer from more than just the addiction as it is rarely the addiction that is the cause, but rather the result of an underlying mental health disorder.  The majority of rehab programs these days treat these conditions with the addiction.  This method is known as dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis treatment requires intense psychological evaluations, managed medical support and administration, along with intense therapy sessions to delve deeper into the mental health issue and any hidden catalysts or sources.  Nowadays, alcohol rehab and drug rehab is not limited to the 12-step program.  There is treatment available for virtually everyone.  Holistic treatment centers that focus more on the union on the mind, body, and soul are widely available for addicts and alcoholics who gravitate more towards acupuncture and other alternative forms of rehabilitation.  There are rehab programs designed specifically for gay, lesbian, and transgender addicts and alcoholics, focusing on the special needs and stressors encountered in that specific community.  Addicts and alcoholics will find religious treatment centers, depending on their individual beliefs.  There are even treatment centers that focus on spa treatments and saunas to cleanse the addict or alcoholic’s body of the toxins from addiction.  No matter the individual or his specific needs, there is more than likely a rehab program somewhere that can meet those needs.  With all the different kinds of alcohol rehab programs available and all the distinct differences between them, they all have one thing in common and that is their goal – to rid the alcoholic of the mental and physical grip of their addiction and lay groundwork to prevent relapse after treatment has been completed.  It is commonly advised for alcoholics to remain in treatment for a longer term so that they can get as much time as possible with sobriety and begin to realize the rewards of being a healthy sober individual.   With alcoholism contributing to so many deaths, from fatal traffic accidents to death from withdrawal or alcohol poisoning, alcohol rehab centers are often considered the only hope for an alcoholic to survive. Alcohol Detox Detox is an important and essential element in the recovery process from drug addiction and alcoholism.  Depending on the severity of the addiction, the process can be extremely painful and sometimes fatal.  Detox requires medical supervision and is defined as the process in which drugs or alcohol is withdrawn from the body.  Detoxification is a prerequisite to most all alcohol rehab programs as the spiritual and mental healing cannot begin until the physical body is cleansed of the toxins from alcoholism and drug addiction.  The length of time alcohol detox takes varies from individual to individual, based on their personal consumption of alcohol and use of drugs.  This process can be life threatening with substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines, as these two substances create a devastating physical addiction when withdrawal often results in seizures, convulsions, tremors, and has proven to sometimes be fatal. Mostly for these reasons, it is imperative for addicts and alcoholics to have some kind of professional medical setting in which to undergo detox. The Steps to Alcohol Rehab
    2007-09-21 16:34:05
An alcohol rehab consists of three general alcoholism treatment option steps. These three steps are intervention, alcohol detox and rehab. Many persons with a drinking problem do not see or acknowledge that they have a problem with alcohol abuse. Intervention used in an alcohol rehab program used to be more confrontational since problem drinkers would be confronted about their excessive drinking and threatened with consequences if they did not begin rehab. Today, the more effective alcohol treatment option consists of caring and understanding counseling and intervention. Studies have found that more people begin an alcohol rehab program when family members or employers are honest with them and try to help the drinker see that alcohol abuse is adversely affecting their health and lives in many ways. Family or friends may need to help start the process of drinking problem recognition by reading relevant books on the subject to become better informed, by contacting their healthcare profes

What does treatment in an alcohol rehab program and drug addiction treatment look like?
    2007-08-17 13:01:38
What does an alcohol rehab program look like? There are many differences between people with drug addiction problems, which make it impossible to give a clear general, answer to this question. Globally, alcohol rehab and drug addiction treatment is as follows: In the first place, there is an interview on admission. In this conversation, the therapist determines what is going on and if there is really a drug addiction. This conversation usually takes an hour. However, sometimes more admission interviews need to take place to get a clear picture of the problems and the person. Additional research may be necessary after this conversation; this is usually done with questionnaires. An example of such a questionnaire is the EuropASI, which determines the severity of the drug addiction. Depending on the impression of the interviewer and the preference of the addict, a drug addiction treatment plan is made. This addiction treatment plan contains your data, the goals of the addiction treatment

    Understanding Alcohol Rehab
    2007-06-24 23:49:35
Our understanding of alcohol rehab has evolved considerably since the early days ; today a growing number of addictive drinkers enjoy better odds at lasting peace. In the last few years, alcohol addiction research has introduced some important ideas that have caused some astonishing improvements in the way we look at alcoholism. If you would like to take advantage of the latest research, you should consider contacting progressive alcohol rehab programs. Alcohol rehabilitation programs that lacked mainstream support just a few years ago now can be found in many of the mainstream alcohol treatment centers. Such acceptance has resulted in a preponderance of meditative healing techniques. Of course, many alcohol rehab centers continue to offer popular group therapy sessions throughout the day. But by far the most important advance has been in understanding the feelings that drive addiction. These days, a growing number of experts have begun identifying addiction as a response to&

How to Decide on a Quality Alcohol Rehab Program
    2007-06-20 13:21:41
It is often difficult when seeking help, to sort out what makes for an effective alcohol rehabilitation program. Nearly all will declare themselves to be uniquely suited for meeting the needs of whoever is calling. It isn’t true. There are, however, several questions you can ask that will help you to increase your chances of selecting a quality alcohol rehab program: 1. What are the qualifications of the alcohol rehab staff? While Masters Degrees do not guarantee quality, they usually indicate higher standards. Conscientious counselors, and alcohol treatment programs, seek to acquire and increase skills. A lack of credentials is cause for concern; 2. How many of the alcohol rehabilitation staff members refer to themselves “recovering?” This is an important aspect of any alcohol rehab. Alcohol treatment staff with quality recovery can help a person entering alcohol rehab feel a little more comfortable; 3. Are the staff former clients of the alcohol rehab? This is a very big red fl
