    New VW Beetle could be North America's up! variant?

    The VW Beetle is a cult favorite here in the States, but in Germany, it's not so well loved. That could be part of the reason why Volkswagen has been slow to produce a successor to the new Beetle, but word from Motor Trend is that two models could be coming shortly. The first Beetle will be based off the Gen-VI Golf and will hit production in 2010 or 2011. Word out of Wolfsburg is that a second Beetle could be on the way as well, but this one would be based off the up! minicar. That would give VW a sub-brand Beetle lineup, kind of like what Toyota has with Scion, but with an eye on MINI buyers. The smaller up!-based Beetle would also be more true to the original Bug, which was a cheap and efficient "People's Car" with the engine out back (supposedly). Quality problems and a weak dollar have lead VW to struggle in the U.S. over the past few years, but an inexpensive, reliable car with top-notch fuel economy would go a long way toward reversing that trend. The Copa Libertadores, for the uninitiated, is almost certainly the second biggest club competition on the planet. Unfortunately, it doesn't get much coverage outside of South/Latin America. None of it was broadcast in English in the U.S. and I don't think European TV covered it at all (somewhat understanding considering the games are played in the middle of the night there). With all the attention the just-completed Euro championships received stateside (free TV coverage for the first time since, well, ever) you'd figure this might be about to change.     During at the New York Auto Show this past March, Mercedes announced that it would begin selling three clean diesel SUVs with BlueTEC - the R 320 BlueTEC, the ML 320 BlueTEC and the GL 320 BlueTEC - in America. The SUVs won't be available until the fall, but Daimler released a slew of new photos of the large diesels today and a detailed release reminding us about these U.S. Bin 5 standard compliant vehicles. In case you were curious, the photos show that these SUVs can pull horses, cross long brldges, and park in front of large houses.     via i.eurosport.se Last week a Swedish newspaper reported that the Colorado Avalanche had signed hockey agitator Per Ledin to a one-year, one-way contract.  But, six days later, no North American news outlet has confirmed this report, and there has been no mention whatsoever of Ledin in the Denver Post, the Rocky Mountain News, nor the official Avalanche site. Nothing.  Not a peep. Call me crazy, but I'm starting to think that Sweden's April Fool's Day falls on June 12th. Until I read or hear otherwise, I'm going to declare this report to be complete bunk.  As to how or why a news outlet would report something like this, I have no clue. A recent survey has revealed that the average 18 to 24 year old could only answer 54% of questions correctly. This is indeed a depressing and worrying figure.Over 60% of Americans aged 18-24 couldn’t find Iraq on a map of the Middle East (yes, a map of the Middle East… not even a map of the world) in a 2006 survey (that’s three years after the start of the war).
