| Shark-Bite DVD Review: American Gangster -- a drive-by on common sense | | 2008-07-13 15:15:19 | | There’s a scene not too far into “American Gangster” in which the eponymous gangster, Mr. Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, is in Bangkok and outlining his plans to his contact here on how he wants to revolutionize the drug trade in New York. He wants to cut out the middleman and buy directly from the source – in this case, the Kuomintang operating out of the Golden Triangle (Thailand, even then, was known for its OEM work). This, his wide-eyed contact explains, would be impossible. Why getting the heroin at its source would require going into the deepest darkest jungles of Northern Thailand! Sitting with a bottle of Singha in hand, amid the din of Bangkok street life (well the modern day filmed-in-Chiang-Mai representation), Lucas is not to be deterred and delivers one of the movie’s best lines: “I’m in the jungle. Pero cuando el jefe muere inesperadamente, Frank decide aprovechar la puerta que ha quedado abierta en la estructura de poder para construir su propio imperio y hacer realidad su version del sueno americano. Gracias a su ingenio y a una estricta etica de los negocios, se hace con el control del trafico de drogas en el corazon de la ciudad, inundando las calles con un producto de mayor calidad a mejor precio. Lucas es mas listo que todos los demas grupos mafiosos y no solo acaban convirtiendose en uno de los mayores narcotraficantes de la ciudad, sino tambien en una de sus superestrellas civicas. | | Fletch's Film Review: American Gangster | | 2007-12-18 12:03:00 | | (Ed. note: Procrastination tends to build on itself, and that is surely the case here, as I've been sitting on this review for some time now. Fact of the matter is, I don't have a lot of thoughts regarding American Gangster, so take from that what you will.)American Gangster is a good movie. No more, no less, really. Though it has little to do with the film itself, I was bothered by the fact that Russell Crowe and Denzel Wasginhton spend less time onscreen together than DeNiro and Pacino did in Heat - a faux pas that can be blamed on either the media or the marketers. The lack of shared screen time doesn't hurt the film terribly, but it certainly hurts its appeal, as what we instead get is a game of cat-and-mouse, with the bulk of the storytelling focusing on the mouse (Washington), Frank Lucas.Lucas is an interesting choice for a movie character. Though the title and some of the press would have you believe this to be a Scarface-like characterization for the ages, it's really the lack of bravado and violence that sets him apart from your typical mafia-like overlord. Lucas was a professional in almost every sense of the word - smart, calculating and fully aware that showy behavior would put him on the front burner for the cops trying to find out just who was bringing in the large amounts of uncut cocaine to New York - he was the anti-bling before bling was a word. (On a sidenote, Lucas was brilliant with this move, going to Asia to get his supply direct from the source, getting the best product he could provide to his customers while at the same time cutting out the middle man, and therefore his costs.)Contrasting Lucas is Richie Roberts, the detective played by Crowe. Denzel Washington plays Manhattan drug-king-pin-turned-informer Frank Lucas, who was a driver, bodyguard and confidant for one of the Harlem's crime bosses, and replaced him after boss died in the late 60s. Frank Lucas came up with a novel way to import and distribute heroin. Russel Crowe plays a NYPD officer Richie Roberts. Both men have something in common: each one are religeously following their ethical code, but on opposite sides of the law.
