How Would Obama’s Tax Plan Affect Americans Living Abroad?
    2008-06-29 23:00:00
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal–Europe discusses the impact that Obama's proposed tax changes would have on Americans living abroad:Celebrity chef Alain Ducasse insists that his change of citizenship this week from high-tax France to no-income-tax Monaco wasn't a financial decision but an "affair of the heart." Right. But even if he's being sincere, plenty of other Frenchmen have moved abroad to escape their country's confiscatory taxes.Americans should be so lucky: Theirs is the only industrialized country that taxes its people even if they live overseas. That hasn't been a big problem as long as U.S. tax rates have been relatively low. But with Barack Obama promising to lift rates to French-like levels, this taxman-cometh policy could turn Americans into the world's foremost fiscal prisoners. And make no mistake, taxes under a President Obama could be truly à la française. The top marginal tax rate, including federal, state and local levies, c

Supreme Court says Americans have right to guns
    2008-06-26 09:44:40
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court says Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices’ first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history. The court’s 5-4 ruling strikes down the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision goes further [...]

Americans Are Not Earning Less. . .
    2008-06-19 17:40:50
The media is constantly telling us that despite the unprecedented growth this country has seen since 1980 the American worker has not shared in this prosperity. One statistic they are always pulling out is that household income has been stagnant the 1970's. Of course liberals fail to mention all other forms of compensation and wealth creation Americans enjoy. The reality is that wages... Why Don’t Americans have Passports? Why do we know more about them than they know about us?

My question: Has anyone collected data as to how many Canadians, New Zealanders, Australians, Chinese, Japanese, South Americans, etc have passports that was used to visit Europe et al? Isn’t it interesting how exclusively and carefully America is watched under the microscope while other nations are ignored all together? The title of this entry is the [...]

Alcohol Detox Rare for Americans with Alcohol Problems
    2008-06-16 00:49:36
by Rod MactaggartA new report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) found that more than 30 percent of Americans, at some time in their lives, have met the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence. Most of these people never received any treatment, and those who did often didn’t get treatment for 10 years or more – 10 years of alcoholism that could have been avoided with early and effective alcohol detox and rehab. This report refers to data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), which surveyed 43,000 U.S. adults. The researchers found that only 24 percent of those who met the criteria for alcohol dependence received any type of treatment, and just 7 percent of those who met the criteria for alcohol abuse received treatment. That’s a very disheartening statistic. And just as bad or even worse is the fact that most of those people surveyed developed alcohol problems in their early 20s but didn’t get treatm

Is A Whole Food Nation Possible For Americans?
    2008-06-03 08:57:00
The Standard American Diet is very different than it was a hundred years ago. The biggest change is generally how it’s prepared. Years ago food was prepared and served more simply. Thanks to food-processing technology, we've seen the development of convenience foods, quick fix packages, frozen, canned, boil-in-bags, and of course microwavable foods that get us in and out of the kitchen quickly. Generally, few people cook in the traditional way, at least on a regular basis. It's become easier and more convenient to open a can, nuke prepackaged meals, stir water into the contents of a one skillet meal and heat and serve a frozen dinner.Highly processed junk food has become a billion-dollar-a-year industry. Grocery store shelves are packed with candy, packaged baked goods, cookies, sugary dry cereals that also have artificial flavors and colors, just add water dinners, snacks loaded with sugar, fat and salt . Too many sodas and juice cocktails blends made with more chemicals and additive

Poor Eating Habits Cause Malnourished - Obese - Sick Americans.
    2008-05-28 10:48:00
Right now, many Americans are starving themselves of their health:Studies show that junk food, sugary drinks, and beer make up nearly one-third of the calories adult Americans consume daily!By comparison, healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables, make up only 10 percent of our caloric intake.Because of poor eating habits, two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, and many more are simply malnourished. You’ve heard the phrase “You are what you eat.” Well, it’s not far from the truth. Your body and its ability to function properly depend on the nutrients that you get from your food. In many ways, your body is like a car. Food is your fuel. And you need the right kind of fuel – and enough of it – to avoid breaking down. What are the consequences of poor diet for children?Unhealthy eating habits during childhood can interfere with optimal growth and development while setting the stage for poor eating habits during adolescence and adulthood.* Poor diet can predispose

Bush Says Americans Face a `Tough Economic Period'
    2008-05-03 12:28:02
May 3 - President George W. Bush said Americans are ``facing a tough economic period'' after reports this week showed the economy lost jobs for a fourth straight month and economic growth was close to a standstill. ``My administration has been clear and candid on the state of the economy,'' Bush said today in his weekly radio address. ``We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action.'' Payrolls shrank by 20,000 workers last month, following a revised 81,000 drop in March, the Labor Department said yesterday. The same day, the Federal Reserve, seeking to prevent a deeper slowdown, announced fresh measures to coax banks into lending. ``I'm confident we can weather this rough period,'' Bush said. Tax rebates of $117 billion will have a ``positive effect on the economy in this quarter, and an even greater impact in the next.'' The rebates to 130 m

Americans unloading precious belongings to make ends meet
    2008-04-29 21:00:00
NEW YORK - THE for-sale listings on the online hub Craigslist come with plaintive notices, like the one from the teenager in Georgia who said her mother lost her job and pleaded, 'Please buy anything you can to help out.' Or the seller in Milwaukee who wrote in one post of needing to pay bills - and put a diamond engagement ring up for bids to do it. Struggling with mounting debt and rising prices, faced with the toughest economic times since the early 1990s, Americans are selling prized possessions online and at flea markets at alarming rates. To meet higher gas, food and prescription drug bills, they are selling off grandmother's dishes and their own belongings. Some of the household purging has been extremely painful - families forced to part with heirlooms. 'This is not about downsizing. It's about needing gas money,' said Ms Nancy Baughman, founder of eBizAuctions, an online auction service she runs out of her garage in Raleigh, North Carolina. One former affluent customer is now

Reasons Americans Eat Normal Food (Junk Food)
    2008-04-28 02:47:00
Kim Klaver did a post asking "If "normal" food is so bad for us, why is it so common?""There are two main reasons. One is that it has more immediate appeal. You may feel lousy an hour after eating that pizza, but eating the first couple bites feels great. The other is economies of scale. Producing junk food scales; producing fresh vegetables doesn't. Which means (a) junk food can be very cheap, and (b) it's worth spending a lot to market it.If people have to choose between something that's cheap, heavily marketed, and appealing in the short term, and something that's expensive, obscure, and appealing in the long term, which do you think most will choose?" -Paul Graham We know we need to make a change. What SHOULD one eat that's quick, tastes good and doesn't make us look old and feel tired before our time? Recovery comes when citizens begin to spend more wisely, save money and pay off their debts, but not this time. Never before have credit policies been so loose for so long, and there has been no decrease i

Gasoline Price Climbing, Americans Drive Less
    2008-04-09 08:47:00
As gasoline prices broke records in 2007, Americans cut back on their driving for the first time in more than 20 years, according to the US Federal Highway Administration.Total travel fell 0.4 per cent to 3.00 trillion miles from 3.01 trillion miles in 2006.In December, when US retail gasoline averaged $US3.02 a gallon ($NZ1.02/litre), travel fell 3.9 per cent to 236.6 billion miles from 246.3 billion miles in 2006.With gasoline prices still climbing, other data shows Americans are responding by changing their gas-guzzling habits. Not only are they driving less, but they are buying more fuel-efficient vehicles and using more public transport.Daily ridership on US subways and public buses is at the highest level in more than 50 years.Energy Secretary Sam Bodman has said he is concerned that average US gasoline pump prices could hit $US3.50 ($NZ1.16/litre) a gallon this summer, and said he is "optimistic" that OPEC will come to the rescue of US drivers. The US retail price of gasoline set

A Spy's Motivation: Ideology, Not Money Motivates Americans to Spy Against the U.S.

Prior to 1990, just a fifth of Americans spying for others were ideologically motivated. The March report, obtained by the Federation of American Scientists' Secrecy in Government project, compares trends among the 173 Americans known to have spied against the U.S. since 1947, of which 37 began their spying since 1990.Only five of those 37 spies are known to have received payment for their work. Of the 11 spies identified since 2000, none was paid — although five had hoped to be. But almost half of those spying against the U.S. since 1990 demonstrated an allegiance to a foreign country or cause.Increasingly, that cause is wrapped up in the war on terror. More...

Americans dissatisfied with economy by 4 to 1!
    2008-04-04 05:51:04
The United States used to be the Land of Opportunity. Not anymore, it seems. Four-fifths apparently think their future lies between the average and the dire. According to a New York Times/CBS News poll, 81 percent of respondents said they believed that “things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track,” up from 69 percent a year ago and 35 percent in early 2003. That's an acceleration of pessimistic thought beyond imagination!Only 19 percent it must be assumed think life is OK. Could these be those that make up the Bush administration, Ben Bernanke and his Fed Friends, Wall Street "analysts" and sub-prime lenders? After all, they all have some reason to keep up the pretence that all is fine in the garden.Just think. Walk down any street in any town in America and four out of five people you meet are of the opinion the country is on "the wrong track"! I remember Casey Jones being a tad upset if his trains got on the wrong track. Imminent collision was a strong possibility.

Polk & Co, the median age for passenger cars is 9.2 years in the US for second year in a row. It was 8.3 years in 1998. These figures have increased steadily since then. So Americans are driving older cars. If we look at what happens at the end of a car's life, 5.5 percent of cars were scrapped in 2007, compared to 9.5 percent in 1970 - so Americans are scrapping less as well. The could be several reasons for this. Americans might not want to change their cars more often for economic reasons, because their vehicles are more reliable and have increased longevity or simply because cars don't change all that much in each model year. In addition, the question of whether if it's financially worth it to upgrade to a greener car -- regardless of

LG's 13.3-inch P300 arrives in Europe, Americans beg a little more

As expected, South Koreans got their hands around LG's stylish P300 a good while back, and while Americans just knew it was headed stateside in short order, it looks like Europe has received the nod for second dibs. Horrible Waterboarding Americans: Five Minutes Well Spent
    2008-02-21 12:15:00
I used to not think too terribly about waterboarding to be honest. Technically, it's a NON-lethal form of interrogation. A controlled drowning as described. Pretty cruel yes, but never put much more thought into it than that. And most counter arguments were usually nothing more than references to being some neo-nazi something or other. That is, until I was skimming through a comments section for a discussion about waterboarding. Amazingly enough, amid all the 'superior intellects' tossing their Nazi referrences, one actually intelligent soul posted the statements by military and intelligence experts alike, which advised that yes, waterboarding technically is torture.Okay, I can go with that. But just how horrible has America really been regarding waterboarding? There have been weeks worth of airtime spent "investigating the slippery slope" America is hurling down regarding the use of torture. So just how much time has America really spent torturing detainees?Less than five minutes. That's

Older Americans suffering less from memory loss

Although it’s too soon to sound the death knell for the “senior moment,” it appears that memory loss and thinking problems are becoming less common among older Americans. A new nationally representative study shows a downward trend in the rate of “cognitive impairment” -- the umbrella term for everything from significant memory loss to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease -- among people aged 70 and older. read more

9/11 Attacks Changed Way Americans Dream
    2008-02-01 22:29:08
(HealthDay News) -- The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, not only caused huge political and social changes, they also altered the dreams of Americans. That's the suggestion from a small study published in the February issue of Sleep.Dr. Ernest Hartmann of Tufts University and Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Boston looked at 11 men and 33 women, aged 22-70, who'd been recording their dreams for at least two years. Each of the participants provided information about 20 consecutive dreams, 10 before 9/11 and 10 after 9/11.The study found that dreams after 9/11 showed more intense images, but weren't longer, more dreamlike or more bizarre than those before terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. In addition, the dreams after 9/11 did not contain more images of airplanes or buildings. None of the participants had dreams involving airplanes flying into buildings, even though they'd all seen such images many times on TV."The more intense imagery is very consistent

    American Idol, Americans Dream...
    2008-01-31 00:01:25
American Idol season 7 just begun couple of weeks ago. The audition has started in many cities in the USA and I would say the auditions tape is best medicine for my mood swing thanks to PMS!.I do understand people will follow their dreams because without dreams you will not be able to move forward, and dreams give you reasons to do your best at whatever you're good at and pursue your dreams is a good reason to live your life until you have achieved it.I do notice that people who made it to Hollywood are "normal" ones. They know the judges will acknowledge their talent not their silly outfit. But I really admire their self esteem, they have strong will in pursuing their dreams to be the next American Idol, even though the outcome didn't come out well.By far, Renaldo Lapuz's audition tape is my fave. He loves Simon Cowell and he created a song for him "I am your brother". I'm sure he will be next William Hung :)Check out "I am your brother" song here:Happy Thursday people.

Ku Klux Klan Attempts Makeover, Americans "Unimpressed"
    2008-01-22 07:34:00
CWT - Aboard the Motor Vessel "Eva Braun" Somewhere in the South Atlantic. In an exclusive interview, exiled Grand Wizard of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Absalom Knib revealed to Cats With Thumbs a long range plan to revamp and revitalize the moribund white supremacist terror organization. Knib told CWT he aims to make the KKK " more user friendly " and " in touch with the younger generation."The Ku Klux Klan, with its long history of violence, is the most infamous — and oldest — of American hate groups. Although black Americans have typically been the Klan's primary target, it also has attacked Jews, immigrants, homosexuals and, until recently, Catholics. Over the years since it was formed in December 1865, the Klan has typically seen itself as a Christian organization, although in modern times Klan groups are motivated by a variety of theological and political ideologies. Since the 1970s the Klan has been greatly weakened by internal conflicts, court cases, a seemingly endless series of splits and government infiltration. While some factions have preserved an openly racist and militant approach, others have tried to enter the mainstream, cloaking their racism as mere "civil rights for whites." Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center estimates that there are between 5,000 and 8,000 Klan members, split among dozens of different — and often warring — organizations that use the Klan name. Cats With Thumbs interviewed Mr. Knib aboard ship in the open ocean, as the Grand Wizard is under indictment in the United States for several felonies and has been denied entrance to numerous foreign ports of call.CWT: Mr. Knib, given that klan membership has drastically declined and you, the leader, are relegated to living on the high seas without a country, wouldn't you agree the Ku Klux Klan is finished? Knib: Well, it looks bad now, but we're not done yet. I got together with some old pals from Deutsche Bank and we came up with a plan to get us rolling again.

Thanks But No Thanks -- Americans Trust Their Own Arithmetic When Figuring Taxes
    2007-12-19 00:00:00
A new survey on tax attitudes by Bankrate.com finds that despite the complexity of filing an income tax return, most Americans don't want the government to fill it out for them.Two-thirds of Americans would prefer to maintain control over their tax returns (65 percent) rather than let the government prepare their returns, if given that option. And the IRS doesn't want that responsibility either. They'd rather take whatever money would be required to implement that plan (probably a huge amount) and spend it on their current auditing operations. We've written before here and here about California's failed experiment with the so-called ReadyReturn. To test how Californians would react to a pre-filled-out tax return, the state mailed out 50,000 tax returns that were all filled out for people to just sign and return. 39,000 people threw them away and filled out their own returns. That failure didn't stop John Edwards and Barack Obama from promising that if they're elected, they'll have

Long Term Care Insurance: Security for Americans
    2007-12-07 21:18:00
A health care crisis is looming on the horizon for many Americans, one that could bring financial and emotional devastation that would make zooming gas prices and bouncing stock markets pale in comparison. The problem? According to Metlife, 70% of people over the age of 65 will need some form of extended care before they die, whether it's a visiting nurse in the home or full-time nursing home care. According to The Alliance for Aging, "nearly 9 out of 10 Americans will have at least one chronic condition" by age 65. Thanks to modern medicine, these conditions are debilitating, but not immediately fatal. Most seniors express concern about paying for necessary care in the face of such a condition, but few do anything about it.Laura Moore, senior vice president for long term care insurance at John Hancock, says the issue is "increasingly important because Americans are living longer, care costs are rising, and company pensions are being cut back." Moore says that Americans are "not facing the reality of what lies ahead."If you need extended care, but are unable to pay for it, the burden will fall to your families. The emotional, physical, and financial drain of caring for a sick parent is so traumatic that, according to the American Alzheimer's Foundation, 60% of family care givers die before the person they are caring for! Furthermore, if you are placed in a nursing home without the funds to pay the bill, you risk not only your life long savings, but also the family home and even your life insurance.Understanding Long Term CareLong term or extended care refers to care that is needed beyond the time period covered by Medicare or major medical insurance. It is often provided in a nursing home, but can also be provided in a person's home or in an assisted living facility. The cost of assisted living, nursing home care and professional home health care is high and climbing yearly. A 2003 study conducted by Metropolitan Life Insurance found the average rate to be $180 per

    Hungry Americans
    2007-11-21 18:07:35
As we sit down for our Thanksgiving feast this year, how many of us will be thinking about the over 35 million Americans who have to deal with hunger? That is about one out of every ten Americans. Sadly, many of them are children. This problem is nothing new to our country; it has probably existed since our country began. You would think over the course of two-hundred years we would be able solve the hunger problem in America. It would certainly be great if we could, because then we would probably know how to solve world hunger.Like most, if not all of our problems we handle it with problem management instead of actually solving the problem. Food banks, free lunches, and food stamps are nice, but they are only a temporary fix. If we keep feeding people without ever putting them in a position to acquire their own food, the problem will never get solved. We must create a society with abundant opportunity that allows everyone to earn enough money to be able to afford

IRS to Audit 13,000 Americans for Tax Gap Research
    2007-10-16 07:00:00
13,000 Americans will be randomly selected for an IRS audit for research purposes, according to U.S. News & World Report: The Internal Revenue Service relaunched its program of random audits this month in an effort to hone its ability to estimate compliance rates and crack down on tax fraud. Unlike its usual audits, which are more targeted and so not representative of all taxpayers, the program will randomly select about 13,000 individuals for a closer examination of their 2006 returns. The goal is to gather information that will help reduce the $290 billion "tax gap," the estimated difference between taxes paid and taxes owed. (In 2006, the IRS audited about 1.3 million taxpayers as part of its routine auditing process.)More here. More on income taxes here.

Fox Soccer Channel Spoils Americans With Triple Header Of Euro Qualifying
    2007-10-13 16:10:00
American soccer fans hungry for Euro 2008 qualifying are today treated to three live matches on Fox Soccer Channel. First, we get the juggernaut France versus Faroe Islands, at 11am EDT. Sure to be a nail-biter and one that will be of particular interest to all the Faroe Islands expatriates living stateside. Immediately afterwards, at 1pm, we are treated to what is sure to be a fierce duel between Sweden and Liechtenstein. And just when you thought it was safe to go outside and enjoy the sunshine, at 3pm follows a veritable clash of the titans between Slovenia and Albania.Seriously, why does FSC even bother? I'm sure they must realize how absurd it is to show these games? I know they come through with some other quality programming, such as live EPL and Serie A coverage (though sadly, no more Bundesliga or Ligue Un) but what exactly is the point of this? So they can tell advertisers they have Euro qualifying matches? Might be something to that one, but from the perspective of true U.S.-based soccer aficionados, I don't think I'm going out on a limb by kindly asking them to spare us this madness. Do what you have to to get us more meaningful games. If you can't, drop it altogether. We'll get over it, I promise.

    Something All Americans Should Know
    2007-09-27 19:13:00
There was yet another Democratic presidential debate last night, this one at Dartmouth University. Someone asked a really cintillating question, one all Americans should know before casting a ballot in next year's presidential election: "Which team do you support, the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees?" Here are the candidates responses: New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: Red Sox.Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich: Cleveland Indians.New York Sen. Hillary Clinton: Yankees.Former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel: Red Sox.Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards: Red Sox.Illinois Sen. Barack Obama: White Sox.Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd: Red Sox.Delaware Sen. Joe Biden: Yankees.Oh, brother. Who gives a rat's ass what these hypocrites think about baseball? I've never cast aballot with the idea that "I'll vote for the one who supports my team." Great Americans
    2007-09-26 02:17:03
I find myself troubled lately with the liberal use of the words "great American". This is ironic since it was a conservative radio talk show host that got me thinking about it. On this show, the host and his callers regularly tell each other, "you're a great American". Great Americans are people who make a difference; without their existence our country would be in much worse shape. Great Americans inspire courage and change. They have vision and imagination that go beyond even a good American. Most times these people are not recognized as great Americans until later in life or after they are gone. The men in the picture above are great Americans; I can't see how a radio talk show host and his callers can compare themselves to men like this. Especially those who engage in polarization tactics that are tearing our nation apart. If people like this are great Americans, then we need a new name for the true great American. As I pondered this further I found myself wond
