| | Destination: Amsterdam | | 2007-11-11 17:06:00 | | Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the "Venice of the North". During the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam was one of the most important ports in the world, with innovative developments in trade, and became the leading centre for finance and diamonds. The city was founded in the late 12th century as a small fishing village, and has grown to become the largest city in the Netherlands with a population of 743,027 inhabitants, which includes 177 different nationalities, making Amsterdam the most multicultural city in the world. The metropolitan region has a population of 1,021,870 inhabitants and is part of the conglomerate metropolitan area Randstad, with a population of 6,659,300 inhabitants. The name Amsterdam is a derivative from Amstel dam, that is, a dam in the river Amstel. | | By: Exotic Destinations | | |
| | By: Destinos Exoticos | | |

| | Amsterdam hotels | | 2007-05-14 22:51:59 | | Wendy wants to take another trip to Amsterdam to catch some of the many, many things that we missed in our brief stop there on the way back from the eclipse trip.
Anyway, we’ve been looking around for an economical way to do it and just came across EasyToBook which lists a whole bunch of discounted hotels in the Amsterdam area. Although, chances are we’ll likely end up staying at one of the airport hotels, we were only intending to do that to simplify the parking but we may not need to do that as the site highlights a number of hotels within Amsterdam with parking (though we’ll need to balance the extra cost of a central hotel vs 15 or 20 mins by train from a cheaper one outside the city limits.
I quite like the map search facility which should make it that little bit easier to find a hotel close to our approach route into the city. That’s also used to highlight the exact spot of the various Amsterdam attractions listed on the site.
