You are what you eat? Perhaps not for ancient man
    2008-04-30 03:09:30
Careful analysis of microscopic abrasions on the teeth of early human “cousins” by resesarchers at Johns Hopkins, University of Arkansas, Cambridge University and Stony Brook University show that although equipped with thick enamel, large jaws and powerful chewing muscles, this ancient species may not have eaten the nuts, seeds or roots their anatomy suggests. Instead, the tooth wear suggests a more general diet, as reported in next week’s Public Library of Science One. read more

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
    2008-03-26 01:11:00
The historian Herodotus (484 BC–ca. 425 BC), and the academic Callimachus of Cyrene (ca 305–240 BC) at the Museum of Alexandria, made early on lists of "Seven wonders" however their writings have not survived, except as references. Their wonders incorporated the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Colossus of Rhodes and Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Greek type was not "Wonders" but "theamata", which translates nearer to "must-sees". The list that we make out at present was compiled in the Middle Ages—by which time many of the sites were no longer in survival. At present, the only ancient world wonder that still exists is the Great Pyramid of Giza.

"Origami"- An ancient Japanese art of paper folding
    2008-03-23 09:17:41
Origami is a creative art and hobby. As far as I remember my first paper folding or origami learning experience, it was "making a boat". First few days, after learning I was making number of boats with every available piece of paper. I still love to learn origami and as an educator, I teach it to my children also. And now it is very easy for everyone to learn it as internet itself is a big resource. There are number of books available which provide step-by-step insructions to learn it. You would be surprise to know that origami can help in mental health therapy. Read this intereting story told by George Ho, who is mental health nurse in Perth, Australia, he tells us how paper folding appealed to him in 1993:Read at About me pageNow let's discover what is "Origami"?According to Wikipedia "Origami (折り紙 origami?) [Wikipedia] March 10: Slavery in ancient Greece
    2008-03-10 04:16:48
Slavery in ancient Greece was considered not only necessary but natural; neither the Stoics nor the Early Christians questioned the practice. However, some isolated debate began to appear, notably in Socratic dialogues, as early as the 4th century BC. Although slaves as dependent groups existed, such as the Penestae of Thessaly, the Spartan Helots or even the Klarotes of Crete, these were more like Medieval serfs. Other parts of Greece practiced chattel slavery, where the individual is deprived of liberty and forced to submit to an owner who may buy, sell, or lease him or her as one might any chattel good. The study of slavery in Ancient Greece poses a number of significant methodological problems. Documentation is disjointed and very fragmented, focusing on the city of Athens. No treatise is specifically devoted to the subject. Judicial pleadings of the 4th century BC were interested in slavery only as a source of revenue. Comedy and tragedy represented stereotypes

Ancient Tomb Found on Greek island of Lefkada
    2008-03-08 03:59:00
The find is a miniature version of the large, opulent tombs built by the rulers of Greece during the Mycenaean era, which ended around 1100 B.C. Although dozens have been found in the mainland and on Crete, the underground, beehive-shaped monuments are very rare in the western Ionian Sea islands, and previously unknown on Lefkada. The discovery could fuel debate on a major prehistoric puzzle — where the homeland of Homer's legendary hero Odysseus was located."This is a very important find for the area, because until now we had next to no evidence on Mycenaean presence on Lefkada," excavator Maria Stavropoulou-Gatsi told The Associated Press.

The two were most excellent together. The original recipe actually calls for the pairing to be with the 2001 Holy Trinity. But I believe this was probably close enough. Ancient pyramid found
    2007-12-28 08:50:12
In central Mexico City, an ancient pyramid was found. Archeologists have discovered the ruins of an 800-year-old Aztec pyramid in the central Tlatelolco area. It is about 36 feet high. Fifteen years ago, another pyramid was found in the site and Wow! I would love to see this pyramid for myself. I find stuffs like this interesting because it gives us idea how people in the past lived especially those that live many centuries ago. Historians have thought that Tlatelolco was founded by the Aztecs in 1325 but because they found that the steps of this new found pyramid much older, I think historians going to revise the Aztec timeline. Ancient Backgammon Game - New Website To Play In
    2007-12-26 13:15:00
I'm not too sure if my taste for website design is too discriminating or what but I've taken a look at one more Backgammon website and I see things to improve on the design. Online Backgammon Game is what I was referring to and I think it needs a little redesign.First I think the website will be better off using vibrant color themes. It's an important asset for websites to have that visually stimulating facade. The online gambling world is becoming bigger and bigger so websites like these need to have these to attract more eyes of customers. For this kind of website, I think green which is the color of money, will work best. A wider header and a well-organized left column for navigation would be perfect. The homepage is a little too long for me. I think the essence of the website should be made to fit "above the fold" as we in the web design world call it.There are also a few things working for http://www.backgammon.org/. I love the way every page loads up very quickly. A slow webs

Thai-Yoga Massage - Rising Popularity of an Ancient Therapy
    2007-12-24 23:57:13
By Nina Schnipper Now is an exciting time to give or receive relaxing, therapeutic Thai-Yoga massage. It is an especially exciting time for therapists and yogis who practice Thai-Yoga massage, as clients who seek natural health treatments are starting to discover its many benefits. What is Thai-Yoga massage? How is it different from other styles of massage, and from yoga? What are some of its health benefits? Why is it becoming popular recently? Thai-Yoga massage is also known as Thai-Yoga or Thai massage. It is practiced in the Thai, or Siam, culture for well-being and prevention. It produces the therapeutic effects of yoga. However, it feels wonderfully relaxing as it is applied. You, the recipient, passively receive the treatment. Essentially, Thai massage is like having yoga done to you. You, the recipient, are usually clothed and lying on a padded mat on the floor. Some therapists may perform the treatment on a therapy table. Others may incorporate some of the Thai stretches into their typical Swedish massages. To alleviate some of the mystique, let's explore the yogic aspects of this therapy. When we practice yoga, we are stretching our body in dynamic ways. These stretches are also called postures, or asanas. We twist and move in many directions, and we stretch many muscles simultaneously. This is called dynamic. One of yoga's therapeutic benefits is its end result. When we stretch dynamically, our exercise is more likely to enhance our everyday activities. Because everyday activities are dynamic. Healthy living requires us to use many muscles for each activity, and to move in many directions. So, after we practice yoga, our muscles and joints feel loose. And our everyday activities feel easier. When these stretches are applied to you, by another person, the benefits are multiplied! When your body is relaxed and passively stretched, your body will often release tension and inhibitions and allow greater stretching to occur. Similarities and diff

    Christmas: ancient holiday
    2007-12-07 11:08:00
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight. In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which they would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as 12 days. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born during the coming year. The end of December was a perfect time for celebration in most areas of Europe. At that time of year, most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking. In Germany, people honored the pagan god Oden during the mid-winter holiday. Germans were terrified of Oden, as they believed he made nocturnal flights through the sky to observe his people, and then decide who would prosper or perish. Because of his presence, many people chose to stay inside.

    An Ancient Rock City
    2007-11-27 22:39:00
Are you someone who is fascinated by ancient cities? Here is one - Petra, JordanPetra, an ancient rock city in present-day Jordan, known to the Arabs as Wadi Musa because of the stream that flows through it, was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom until its defeat by the Romans in AD 106. It then became part of the Roman province of Arabia. After several centuries as a flourishing trade centre, it declined with the shifting of trade routes away from the city. It was captured by the Muslims in the 7th century. Its ruins were rediscovered in 1812 by the Swiss traveler Johann L. Burckhardt. Excavations since the mid-20th century have revealed many rock-cut monuments, including tombs with elaborate facades carved in the rose, crimson, and purple sandstone of the surrounding hills. A narrow winding pass between towering walls leads to the open plain upon which stood the ancient city, while the plain is surrounded by hills in which tombs have been carved in the pink sandstone. Throughout Petra every available rock surface has been worked into a vertical face and in many cases sculptured into the façade of a temple, shrine, palace, or dwelling. The site includes some 800 structures, the best known of which is the Khazneh el-Farun (or so-called Pharoah's Treasury), a mausoleum, monument, or temple with a two-story facade and Hellenistic split pediment.Petra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The Portrayal of Women in Ancient Greek Art
    2007-11-18 21:25:00
In order to get the idea of women's role in Ancient Greece it will be the best to review the way they where portrayed in art. Ordinary Greek women very often had the portrayals of goddesses and sometimes even mythological creatures.Women as well as men were displayed as sex objects. For instance statues of Aphrodite fell under this peculiarity. At the same time some people were identified with their name, and no doubt it diminished their object status. While goddesses were depicted with their attributes and symbols, it reduced their object status as well. There were much less portrayals of nude women than men before the sculpture of the nude Aphrodite of Cnidos was created by Praxiteles. After him more and more women's images were shown as sex objects.Nowadays Greek statues of nude women are displayed without heads and it does not decrease our view of the statues as sex objects. But the Greeks reduced such view putting the heads on. In this regard it is also very interesting to pay a

The role of Women in Ancient Greece
    2007-11-18 21:25:00
There is no doubt that women in Ancient Greece had a different social role than they have nowadays. And ever more, women's roles in ancient, pre-classical and classical period were changing as well. The classical age is the earliest to be studied, as the classical Greeks were talented artists and poets, there were many good writers and historians. We may definitely say that Classical Greeks used to be patriarchal. Women were subservient to men. No one but native male Greeks could become citizens. To obtain some social power women had to get the status of the wife of some influential citizen. Otherwise the influence could be obtain somehow by the relation to a man. Women's activities were limited, and usually were reduced to the realm of a family or they could be courtesans. Within the family women might take care of their children, give orders to the servants, they might grid grain or weave the cloth. But anyway, it's wrong to say women had no influence at all. No home was prosperous

    An Ancient Decree
    2007-10-22 00:37:00
ט' בחשון תשס"חI dreamt. It was a very ancient lawless yet revolutionary time. Something catastrophic was coming that could destroy the world. Nothing we could do could alter the course of the coming catastrophe. We had tried to change the decree, but the decree was immutable and beyond our ability to influence any further, except in severity. I had the feeling a cosmic flood was coming. The only way we could save the world and the human race was to flee through time. If we stayed, the catastrophe would be able to draw enough power from our power to completely obliterate human life and all living creatures upon the earth. To remove ourselves from that time was the only hope for the survival of humankind and other higher living animals. It was a very dangerous endeavor for us to attempt, we could possibly obliterate ourselves in the process. Those "bringing" the catastrophe were counting on us not attempting it. But they had underestimated us. We had the will and the courage to do it - to remove ourselves from time into another time. There was a small group, (at least) 3 of us - myself, my bashert and his friend who seemed like a priest-advisor or something. My bashert was a leader of some sort. In fact, I too was a leader of some sort. (Now that I am awake, our "positions" were similar to the "positions" of Neo, Trinity and Morpheus of "Matrix"-fame, although the time was of ancient days.)We met together in a cave-like hideout in the high rocky mountains. Oddly, in the dream, it was clearly a sunny and bright day the day we met together to discuss "how to" technically go about removing ourselves from that time and "how to" find one another again in some future time to "complete" our mission. We figured out the technicalities and made a binding pact together. Then, we were each projected forward in time. Observing from a distance, I saw that we each landed upon different points on the projected "timeline" of conscious reality, then somehow made an adjustment so that we, at some point in time, would end up "thrown close enough together in time" to find one another on the planet and to meet again.I was then thrown forward in time, as were my bashert and his priest-advisor. I "landed" at a place in time (reminds me of the early 1960's). I stood up, shook off the dust from landing on the ground, and looked around, wondering how in the world I was actually going to find my comrades. I had no idea where in the world they were in this new time. I had no idea the new identities each would have in this new time. I know they are somewhere in the world, but the small details as they have played out in this new time we had not been able to plan in that ancient ancient time. I remembered the pact which still binds us together.I woke up.

Tips Of The Month - Ancient Wisdom That May Change Your Life
    2007-09-22 05:13:00
Courtesy of EmailCashPro! Join EmailCashPro now! The Best Paid to Read Emails on the Internet! And...you know what? It's totally FREE to join!Recently, I heard a story from a self-made multimillionaire. The moral of the story is profound. I hope you can learn something from it. Here's the story...... A sage challenged his students with a question. The question is "Assuming that you have piece of land full of weed, propose what you would do to get rid of the weed." One student suggested to pull out the weed by hand. One said use a shovel is faster. Another said why not we just burn the weed. "The answers are all wrong," said the sage. "The answer is to farm the land." The moral of the story...... We all face problems everyday. Problems are just like weed. They will grow regardless of how you remove them. When facing problems, most people will think of ways to solve the problem, just like the sage's students who proposed to use hand, shovel and fire to remove weed. Regardless of what they do, new weed will continue to grow and there is no end to this. Instead of focusing on how to solve the problem, we should focus on how to ADVANCE from the problem. As what the sage said, the solution to get rid of weed is to farm the land. What he meant was to develop the land. Once the land was developed, weed would no longer be a problem. He didn't solve the problem directly, but the problem would no longer be a problem when he developed the land. In other words, instead of solving the problem, he made good of the entire situation so that he didn't even have to waste time solving the problem, which was just a trivial matter. This is what I mean by ADVANCE from the problem, i.e. making good of the entire situation so that the original problem is no longer a problem. For example, let's say you are in debts. What most people would do is to think of ways to clear the debts. However, instead of focusing on how to clear your debts, you should focus on how to get rich! Once you become rich, your existing debts will no longer be a problem. You may argue that clearing debts and getting rich are the same. This is not true. The strategies to clear debts are very different from the strategies to get rich. Just like the strategies to make extra $1000 and $100000 are very different. Thinking of strategies to make extra $1000 to clear your debts may solve your current problem. But the same problem will arise again. On the contrary, once you get rich, your existing debts will become trivial. Another example. A friend of mine is presently running a loss-making business and he is spending most of his time chasing after bad debts to pay his bills. The total amount of bad debts is about $30000. However, instead of spending his time chasing after the bad debts, he should focus on changing his business model. Once he gets the right business model, he can easily make extra $30000 and many times more. By then, the $30000 bad debts would just be a lesson he has paid to learn. Ask yourself, how often did you focus on solving your problems. Stop solving problems but advance from the problem. If you take every problem as an opportunity for you to grow or to advance, you will realize that once you advance, you will no longer have to solve the problem. Look around for the weed in your life now....... How would you get rid of your weed?

Historical Relic: Ancient Armor Short Review
    2007-07-20 03:03:00
Armor is any equipment of various materials, but generally of metal, used to protect a body in combat, covering for the body, worn when fighting. The oldest of protective devices is the shield; the earliest body armor was a wide belt to protect the abdomen. Ancient armor in ancient Egypt (c. 3000 BC) was a belt that was developed into a wraparound garment extending from armpits to knees,

    2007-06-10 13:25:00
Chan Sen Ancient City and Chan Sen Museum is in Mu 2 in Tambon Chan Sen. It is believed that in the Thawarawadi period, the city was surrounded by a moat with an earth mound. The city had a square shape but with rounded corners almost like a circle. The moat was about 20 meters wide. The area is now a waterlogged valley but traces of the moat can still be seen. The city is about 800 meters long and 700 meters wide with an area of about 480,000 square meters. As the part within the moat is higher than that outside, locals call it “Khok Chan Sen.” A number of artifacts have been discovered in the ancient city; earthenware items like amulets, dolls, lamps; stone items

Conceiving baby boy with ancient Chinese birth gender chart
    2007-05-09 03:54:00
To find out if you’re having a baby boy, or to upper your chances in conceiving a boy by selecting the right time to conceive, use the ancient wisdom of the famous Chinese gender selection chart. First, look up your age at the time of conception, and then cross the number with the month a child was conceived. The ancient Chinese birth gender chart will show if there are greater chances for your baby to be a boy. Or, if you want to conceive a baby boy, plan the time of conception by finding the month in which you’ll have a better chance to conceive a boy. According to this ancient Chinese birth selection chart, your best chances for having a boy would occur if you are 18, 20, 30 or 42 year old mother, and the child is conceived in the month of July! Allegedly, this gender selection chart has been proven to be 93% accurate… Age at the time of conception Month of Conception J F M A M J J A S O N D Stats F M

Monday, March 26, 2007CLINEAncient Vines ZinfandelContra Coast County, 2005Cost: $14.99 / bottleWould Buy AgainWell, I initially bought this vino to serve with my baked ziti over the weekend. However, my husband (a.k.a. “The Guy”) drank it with his “bestest” college friend, Patricia, the night before my ziti dinner with my family. As a matter of fact, they consumed ALL of my bottles of wine and never went to bed (as well as half a bottle of Limoncello Patricia brought – to partake and/or read up on, visit: http://www.anticadistilleriarusso.com/). I did not mind at all as they had almost five year’s of catching up time to do. I was very happy to have her for dinner and in our company again (please check out her awesome website chronologizing her 3 months in Italy: http://www.pinopower.com/).On to the amateur wine review: Although I intended to drink this with pasta, I made pizza and felt it was fairly well-paired (I sent The Guy out for another bottle following his overindul

Bibliotheca Alexandrina: An Ancient Library Goes Modern
    2007-03-03 16:00:00
My head has been buried in books from the very moment I learned to read. History has always been my favorite. I still vividly remember Mr. Bongi's 6th grade social studies class, when we learned about ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. We'd chant “Hammurabi! Hammurabi!” over and over. I didn't always remember who he was or what he did, but the name was indelibly etched in my mind alongside Rameses, Cleopatra, and Alexander the Great. Fast-forward fifteen years, and there I was in Alexandria, Egypt, named for that luminous conqueror now most unfortunately and inextricably linked with Colin Farrell. Nevertheless, it was with a lifetime of anticipation that I stood before the newly rebuilt Bibliotheca Alexandrina...

    2007-02-22 13:42:00
Ancient India Indian physician Sushruta (c. 600 BC) taught and practiced surgery on the banks of the Ganges in the area that corresponds to the present day city of Benares in Northern India. Much of what is known about Sushruta is contained in a series of volumes he authored, which are collectively known as the Susrutha Samhita. It is the oldest known surgical text and it describes in exquisite detail the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of numerous ailments, as well as procedures on performing various forms of plastic surgery, such as cosmetic surgery and rhinoplasty. In the Sushruta school, the first person to expound Āyurvedic knowledge was Dhanvantari who then taught it to Divodasa who, in turn, taught it to Sushruta, Aupadhenava, Aurabhra, Paushakalāvata, Gopurarakshita, and Bhoja.

    2007-02-22 13:41:00
Ancient Greece While surgeons are now considered to be specialised physicians, the profession of surgeon and that of physician have different historical roots. For example, Greek tradition was against opening the body, and the Hippocratic Oath warns physicians against the practice of surgery. Specifically, cutting persons laboring under the stone (i.e.lithotomy, an operation to relieve kidney stones) was to be left to such persons as practice [it]. Of course, most knowledge of surgery comes from dissecting bodies, a science which was repulsive to many healers.

    2007-01-12 10:17:00
The Ananda Pagoda, is said by many to be the finest, largest and best preserved of all Bagan’s 2,000 holy temples and monuments, and in January each year, hundreds flock to the site for the epic, 23 day celebrations. The Ananda Pagoda, also known as Ananda Pahto, was built by King Kyansittha in the early Bagan Period (circa 12th Century), and is said to symbolize the limitless wisdom of the Buddha. The annual Ananda Pagoda Festival is a highlight of Myanmar’s cultural calendar, and is a spectacle that attracts locals, pilgrims and tourists from all over Bagan and beyond! Like a country-fair, you can see locals roll up to the temple with bull carts and horse carts, and remain there for the duration of the festival. Red-robed monks line up with their alms bowls to receive rice and crops from merit makers. A lively market fills the temple’s grounds, and evening performances of ‘Zats’ and ‘Anyeints’ , traditional variety and slap-stick comedy shows, keep the crowd entertain
