| California Sweeping, On Such A Lovely Day...LA Angels 5 Boston Red Sox 3 | | 2008-07-21 04:18:00 | | The Boston Red Sox were sent packing by the LA Angels, heading north to Seattle after being swept by the home team yesterday. The Angels scored three in the eighth inning to not only tie the score but go up by two runs. It was something Boston could not overcome, and they ended up losing by a score of 5-3, their third straight loss to the Halos. Tim Wakefield pitched wonderfully yet again for seven innings, but back to back doubles off him in the eighth tied the score. It was then that Manny Delcarmen entered. Little Manny, who said his changup while warming up in the bullpen was superb, left one of those change of speed offerings out over the plate. That scored two, making it 5-3 Halos. LA closer Francisco Hernandez, the best in all of baseball (by far, stat-wise) sealed the deal and the sweep with a one-two-three scoreless ninth. That's got "last piece to the puzzle" written all over it. The dedication among the Cubs blogosphere to a $1.3 million signing shows how ready we really are for some real baseball around here (which is coming in FIVE DAYS!!!! Yes!).
In all seriousness, I think (and many agree, which is almost unheard of) this is a good move, especially since it's low-risk, considering the cheap contract. Johnson had career-highs across the board in 2006, then back surgery came last year and limited him to 79 games. But as a platoon outfielder with Twistyball, it's a perfect fit.
And just to make sure, I traveled north of the CBCG to find out how his former fans felt about Johnson coming back to the States. So, what's the deal, eh?

Carlos just saw himself on the Jumbotron Big Z has had a marvelous spring so far, letting up only 1 earned run in 9 IP. He's also walked only one batter, while striking out eight. For Big Z, that's quite an accomplishment. Let's hope it translates into a good early start for Zambrano, because he had such a hard time getting going last year.
The Angels play two slit-squad games today against the Cubs and Giants. Jered Weaver will toss against the Giants. Which means we (kinda) get the scrubs!
At least the scrub pitchers. On the mound for the The Angels Angels of Anaheim is Nick Green. Green is not expected to make the major-league team. In 7IP, Green has let up 3 walks, 2 k's, and 3 Earned Runs.
Nick Green is freakin' high and I don't think that I'll see him again, but we shared a moment that will last 'til the end

The weatherman is calling for a rather cool 58 degree day with a 40% chance of thunderstorms. If Lou Piniella's crew is able to get this one in, today would be a good day to see a little offense from the Big Three....as Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee and Alfonso Soriano are all expected back in the lineup.

Jon Lieber gave up two hits and walked one over four innings. Unfortunately, Lou's crazy lineup didn't implode for the second day in a row, so one can only assume that he's encouraged:

As day two of the Alfonso Soriano Lineups Hostage Crisis breaks over Mesa, the air hangs heavy with tension. Tension so thick you can sense it, feel it, smell it. Or maybe that's the lockerroom. But anyway, it's tense.
In a suprise move to anyone who doesn't obsess over Cubs blogs all day, after hailing Soriano as "a great success" in the leadoff spot, Manager Lou Piniella inexplicably dropped him in the order to the number 2 spot. The move bats Soriano behind fan favorite Ryan Theriot, who has not been a great success hitting anywhere in the lineup. Soriano was devastated.
"The first time I bat second in a big-league game [and] somebody was on base," Soriano said. "I did not feel very comfortable. I think I'll have to make a little adjustment. I have to play a couple more games batting second and see how I feel.
As this story goes to press, there is no word on whether Ryan Theriot plans to apologize to Soriano for being on base.

Lou Piniella will send Jason Marquis to the hill for likely the first two innings. Both Kerry Wood and Bobby Howry are expected to pitch today but Aramis Ramirez will likely be held out for another day. Several reports indicated Ramirez could be used as the Cubs' designated hitter today but Piniella indicated on Friday night he sees to reason to rush his return. Also, there are conflicting reports on whether Kosuke Fukudome will play against the Angels today or not....a report mentioned Fukudome is on a play two days and take one off schedule.

Meaning the spiritual gifts He has given me are beginning to arise again. But I've had to step out and fight for just this little bit. But i know that as I continue to grow more into Him and His scriptures I will begin to find myself free from past bondages and oppression that has been holding me down. I praise and thank the Lord that He is opening the doors of Heaven to my family. Not only is God blessing us spiritually, But naturally as well. As we have endured He has been faithful to provide all of our needs according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus. The revelation I am receiving from the angels is the opening of doors for freedom, that justice for the House of God is upon us and He will be our stronghold and defend our causes, though we have been slain and accused and murdered to death by the oppressor and His lies, God is at the door watching and defending Our cause. An astounding 83 of his 108 pitches were strikes, and Beckett has now thrown shutouts in 3 of his past 4 playoff games. Here is what Tito and Josh himself said....."Josh went out there and executed his pitches, in my opinion, probably better than he has at any point in the season," manager Terry Francona said. "He attacked the strike zone with all his pitches. Cut his fastball at times. He pounded the strike zone with three great pitches. That was a great performance." "I had a really good sinker today," Beckett said.It was nice to see the Red Sox field their "A" lineup, with Youk batting second and Manny back in the cleanup spot. The only run the Red Sox would need came on a Kevin Youkilis home run in the first inning. Big Papi David Ortiz added a 2 run shot in the third, and Beckett took care of everything else. He was brilliant. The Red Sox take a 1-0 lead in this best of five series, and in a short series like this, the first game is a vital one. The two teams meet again on Friday, with Daisuke Matsuzaka ready to face Kelvim Escobar.
