    Arctic robots hit the slopes
    2008-07-15 21:46:05
Several snowmobiles navigated speedily over arctic ice and snow in Alaska's outback in late June. This scene might seem ordinary except that the recently unveiled snowmobiles are unmanned, autonomous, toy-size robots called SnoMotes -- the first prototype network of their kind envisioned to rove treacherous areas of the Arctic and Antarctic capturing more accurate measurements that will help scientists better understand what is causing the well-documented melting of ice in those regions. read more

VIDEO: Porsche Panamera caught testing in the Arctic Circle.
    2008-07-06 13:31:00
The Porsche Panamera has been caught testing in Stuttgart and on the 'Ring for some time, and now you can add the Arctic Circle to the list. The forthcoming sedan is undergoing cold weather testing in one of the world's most most inhospitable places in an effort to ensure the family man's Porsche's engine will still purr even on your worst winter morning. The car's appearance looks essentially the same as it has prior spy shots, which is to say that it's still ugly, yet it's still A Porsche. With possible plans for a diesel, hybrid, V6, V8, and turbo V8 model on the table, the German automaker will likely be hanging out with Santa and Frosty for quite a while. Hit the jump to see the V8-powered Panamera as it traverses the white stuff.[Source: Inside Line]

How Does Global Warming Affect Arctic Whales?
    2008-06-20 07:01:28
Global warming affects negatively the environment and everything in it. There are more than just humans that are affected by it. In fact, such a negative process has been hasted by the human race through pollution. While the Earth is trying its best to cool out its environment by using its natural resources such as volcanic eruptions, it cannot seem to be able to be as effective as needed.Several species are affected negatively by global warming, especially at the Poles. In fact, as these regions are the most vulnerable ones, the living beings inhabiting these areas are fighting for their own survival. Arctic whales such as Bowheads, Belugas and Narwhals are also suffering from global warming. How does global warming affect Arctic whales?Global warming is a process affecting the temperature of the atmosphere, which provides negative effects on the environment, its fauna, its flora as well as climates. Villemont Amundsen Collection Arctic Explorer
    2008-01-05 14:15:24
This is the model that accompanied Lewis Gordon Pugh throughout his voyage to the North Pole.Limited to only 50 pieces, this watch is equipped with the “Solar Navigator” navigation system which allows easy orientation based on the position of the sun and shade. All 50 watches travelled with the explorers to the North Pole and functioned perfectly after withstanding the extreme temperatures.Twenty-first century adventurers have long awaited a sporty and elegant watch that enables them to tackle the challenges of modern life. This limited edition watch is designed to meet the expectations of the most demanding connoisseurs, both in terms of its functions and its modern appearance. The choice of British Racing Green as the dominant colour for this watch harks back to the illustrious British racing cars around at the turn of the last century, and gives the piece a chic, sporty appeal. The use of the colour green also highlights Lewis Pugh's environmental campaign and his aim to raise general awareness of the issue of global warming. The movement itself remains faithful to the Villemont tradition by meeting the highest standards in terms of testing and water-resistance. In terms of its appearance, the bridge of the rotor and the oscillating weight are fully decorated with the "Clou de Villemont", the brand's distinctive V-shaped pattern, and these are visible via a transparent sapphire case-back.The bezel featuring the Solar Navigation System - an essential tool for explorations in extreme conditions and a manual alternative to the universal GPS system - enables the wearer to navigate in all conditions without having to rely on batteries or the position of satellites. It works simply by aligning the number on the bezel corresponding to the hour indicated on the dial with the hour hand. For example, if it is 15:00 (3pm), position the bezel so that the number 15 on the bezel is opposite the hour hand (at 3 o'clock). The sun symbol R is then opposite the SW mark on the

    Thermal shift caused Arctic melt?
    2008-01-04 02:24:00
The dramatic loss of the Arctic ice cap may have been triggered by disruption to the thermal layers of atmosphere stacked over Earth's far north, according to Swedish research to be published on Thursday. The study, published in Nature, offers a new explanation for the rise in the Arctic's surface temperature, which over the past century has been nearly 2° C, or twice the global average.Until now, the big suspect in "Arctic amplification" has been reflectivity of sunlight. When the Sun's rays hit snow or ice, most of that solar energy bounces back into space, but as those melting surfaces give way to dark-blue sea, the heat is absorbed instead. This self-reinforcing process, called a feedback, is an established factor in accelerating warming in snow and ice.But Stockholm University scientists led by Rune Graversen believe a possibly bigger cause for Arctic warming could be changes in heat transport in the middle of the troposphere, an atmospheric band that extends 10 kilometres above

Arctic Monkeys actuarán en Barcelona y Madrid
    2007-10-15 20:55:00
Protagonistas absolutos de 2006 con su torrencial debut "Whatever People Say I Am, That´s What I´m Not", Arctic Monkeys son la banda del momento. Fans acérrimos de Oasis pero también afines a Blur, enamorados del hard-pop de Buzzcocks y del de The Jam, en sus canciones cuelan guiños a The Streets y The Police y sus maravillosas líneas de guitarra se atropellan sin respiro. Así lo demuestran títulos ya históricos como ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’, ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ o ‘Fake Tales Of San Francisco’. Canada's increased military presence in the Arctic poses environmental dangers
    2007-08-22 19:30:00
The Canadian Forces mounted four operations in the Arctic this year, one more than in 2006, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently promised to build a deep-sea port and military training centre to bolster Canada's claim over the region. Russia recently made its own move to assert its sovereignty over the top of the world by placing a flag beneath the North Pole. The federal government has carefully documented its stepped-up Arctic presence with official photographs on the National Defence website showing soldiers firing ammunition rounds.

Arctic Ice Shrinks to New Low
    2007-08-19 01:36:00
The University of Colorado at Boulder said there is a 92 percent chance the 2007 September minimum extent of sea ice across the Arctic region will set an all-time record low. Researchers had previously said the chance of setting a record was only 33 percent. "During the first week in July, the Arctic sea ice started to disappear at rates we had never seen before," said Drobot.

    The scramble for the Arctic
    2007-08-12 09:45:08
You want to pray that Canada doesn’t stop stop pussyfooting about its territorial claims to the Arctic. Gentlemanly spats with the Americans over the Northwest Passage (they say it’s international, Canada says its theirs) are all very well as long as the strait is icebound. But with global warming it is set to become a [...]

'Arctic Tale' breaks the ice on ecology
    2007-07-30 01:41:00
USA TODAY - Like a junior and kid-friendly An Inconvenient Truth, it makes the threat of global warming more real by weaving that message into a pair of absorbing narratives. Queen Latifah provides a friendly and gently funny narration for the two tales of the challenges faced by a mother walrus and her pup and a polar bear and her two cubs in the Arctic.

The Simpsons Movie and Arctic Tale, Spread pro-green message
    2007-07-28 00:00:00
The impact of global warming on the environment may still be debateable in the minds of some, but there is no doubting the impact of Al Gore on the immediate filmmaking landscape. Fallout from Gore's Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" can be detected in two of this week's releases, "The Simpsons Movie" and "Arctic Tale," each of which jump on the ecology bandwagon with markedly different approaches.

Royal Dutch Shell Will Drill in the Arctic off the Coast of Alaska this Year
    2007-07-27 03:02:00
Finally, Royal Dutch Shell has brought sanity back to the oil business. Shell has rightfully decided that enough is enough, and will drill in the Arctic off the coast of Alaska this year. It is about time these companies who extract vital resources fight back against the environmentalist lunatics. The greenies simply seek to push us back to the Stone Age with socialism, and front their campaign with the “noble” goal of saving the Planet. Sadly, we too often see advertisements for British Petroleum telling us about the benefits of biofuel and alternative energy. This is possibly the most damaging public relations campaign. What BP does not seem to understand is that the far-left will never give in to anything; liberals always want more government control over our lives until we are all equally miserable. Moreover, the left know these public relations campaigns are simply a ploy. Even worse, the advertisements convince mainstream Americans that we need to stop drilling fo

ALASKA: Huge Shell drilling programme heralds scramble for the Arctic
    2007-07-07 06:28:00
Shell is preparing its biggest exploration programme in the Arctic Ocean off Alaska for more than a decade, a move that could establish a new frontier for the oil and gas industry. The Anglo-Dutch energy giant expects to start a controversial three-year programme next month with a small armada of ships drilling a dozen wells in the Beaufort Sea 30 miles off the Alaskan coast.Industry experts have claimed that it could spark a rush into one of the world’s biggest untapped energy reserves. Authorities believe that the Beaufort Sea contains eight billion barrels of oil and nearly 30 trillion cubic feet of gas. Despite fierce opposition from local communities and environmentalists, the US Minerals Management Service gave Shell the green light for the venture in February. It is understood that Repsol of Spain, Norsk Hydro of Norway and Conoco-Phillips of the US are ready to follow Shell if the drilling proves successful. BP already operates the North Star field on the coastline of Alaska’

    Devlin Arctic Tern home build
    2007-05-24 11:00:00
Peter Gron is building a Sam Devlin designed 23' sloop the Arctic Tern. This is a stitch and glue build that he has been blogging about since starting in August 2004. He has a very nice site (and what looks to be a very nice boat). Sites like this where the builders have hung in there and continue to blog (and build) help the rest of us realize how big this endeavor can be. Hang in there Peter, its looking good!
