North Arlington Mayor Pete Massa's statement on EnCap's end
    2008-05-08 15:33:00
“The decision by the NJMC to right the wrongs that were made over the past eight years ago is welcomed by North Arlington as a vindication to our long-stated position that EnCap was not qualified, technically, financially or otherwise to transform the Meadowlands from garbage dumps to golf courses."As we have known for some time, the dream of turning our backyard into a golf Mecca was only an illusion to entice taxpayers into accepting the plan. The reality, as we learned would be far more troublesome for our communities."It's time for EnCap to simply leave the stage so that North Arlington, along with our sister communities of Rutherford and Lyndhurst can now decide what's best for our residents and homeowners. It’s time the local officials and residents had a bigger say in what goes in our back yard. It took a long time for some state officials to come to the determination I made three years ago, which is that redevelopment that is done only to enhance developer profits is a bad

Arlington to continue welcoming immigrants in 2008
    2008-01-01 16:30:00
Lowell has a post up debunking the myth that high(er) immigration rates lead to an increase in violent crimes, and it looks like Arlington will continue to welcome immigrants according to it's 2008 agenda. Arlington will continue to welcome immigrants even as more Northern Virginia communities look towards turning them away. "While others were making scapegoats of immigrants and promoting divisive polices of exclusion," in 2007, J. Walter Tejada, the county's first Hispanic Chairman, said, "Arlington took a stand for justice and inclusion. This will not change in 2008." The newly named Chairman unveiled his three-pronged "Agenda for Progress" Monday during the Board's traditional New Year's Day organizing session. He is promising to eliminate smoking in public places and trans fats from restaurants, promote affordable housing, and improve cultural diversity by working towards policies of inclusion. Tejada, who immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador when he was 13, is pledging to promote better personal understandings across the County's diverse cultures. He said the County will work with non-profit organizations to expand opportunities for immigrants to pursue U.S. citizenship. He also wants to provide more assistance for English language training. Arlington, which I'm proud to call my home, is one of the most diverse counties in the nation and it's no coincidence that we're also one of the most educated.

Jenkins Passes On Rangers; Power Outage In Arlington?
    2007-12-20 15:00:00
The Texas Rangers’ 40-man roster watch continues. In his Thursday morning piece, Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Anthony Andro focused extensively on the Rangers’ offensive power potential (or lack thereof) going forward into the 2008 season, and prominently noted that the projected Texas lineup contains just one player who has hit 30 or more home runs in [...]

Arlington is hottest place in Eastern Mass.
    2007-10-10 07:19:00
His modest two-bedroom home in Arlington Heights was listed on a Friday for $459,000. By Saturday it had had several private showings. The next day, after an open house, he received eight offers at or above asking price, so he asked the four highest bidders for their best offers. On Monday the house sold for $480,000, more than a 50 percent profit on what he had paid for it three years earlier. "We were expecting, in an ideal world, to get our asking price, and we would have been very satisfied with that," said Stewart, a software engineer who moved to a bigger house in Bedford with his wife and two young children. The final price and quick sale, he added, "blew us away."

    Clarendon Day 2007 - Arlington’s Biggest Festival
    2007-10-01 07:28:24
The intersection of Clarendon Boulevard and North Highland Street was the epicenter of the annual Clarendon Day street festival this past Saturday, September 29, 2007. This was my third year making an appearance at the event held just a few blocks from my apartment. Each year, it’s gotten a little bigger, and a [...]

Closer’s Controversy In Arlington; Bonds To Join Rangers In 2008?
    2007-09-25 01:01:45
The Rangers’ final home series of the year kicks off tonight at the Temple, with rookie right-hander Armando Galarraga making his first major league start against Ervin Santana and the newly crowned AL West champions, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. While Texas may not have much to play for these days, they do have an [...]

Mt. Arlington Grows in Population, Shrinks in Students
    2007-06-29 10:11:43
Once upon a time I lived in Mount Arlington in Northwest New Jersey. This is where my family lives (kinda, we’re stuck in between two towns) and I was surprised to read a report in yesterday’s Daily Record that claimed Mount Arlington is the leader in Morris County growth, with a population of just [...]

Heartbreak In Arlington: Rangers Drop Wild Series Finale
    2007-06-25 09:59:52
You know, it’s games like these that make it tough to be a Rangers fan. But for whatever reason, I keep coming back. After Robinson Tejeda’s miserable start, Texas probably didn’t deserve to win this game. They were down 7-3 going into the bottom of the 8th inning, after being held in check for seven innings by Houston’s Chris Sampson. Tejeda gave up seven runs (five earned) in just 3.2 innings, on five hits and four walks. It was yet another disappointing start for Robinson, who now has a 6.57 ERA on the year. And in the end, it would be disappointment that reigned supreme in Arlington tonight. For a while, though, that didn’t look to be the case. Astros manager Phil Garner called on Rick White to relieve Sampson in the 8th inning, who promptly gave up a pair of singles to Kenny Lofton and Ian Kinsler. Garner quickly went to Dan Wheeler, who struck out Michael Young, and the rally seemed to be on the verge of dying. But a wild pitch and a Sammy Sosa bloop

Rangers Win On Father’s Day; Trade Winds Blowing In Arlington?
    2007-06-19 00:11:46
Despite running out one of the worst lineups in recent team history, the Texas Rangers won on Father’s Day. With the backing of 11 runs of support from the offense, Kevin Millwood pitched six decent innings, and picked up his first win since April 13th in Seattle. It was a mixed bag for Kevin on Sunday; he gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in those six innings, including a pair of homers from Adam Dunn. But on the other hand, Millwood struck out 10 Reds, a new season high for any pitcher in the starting rotation. Perhaps the most encouraging development was that Millwood seemed to get stronger as the game went on, with his fastball still hitting 94 MPH in the 6th inning when he struck out the side. He credits some minor changes in his delivery for his successful start, such as keeping his back straight while lifting his leg instead of arching his back. Millwood also retired 12 of the last 13 batters that he faced. He had his share of hiccups early on, but his outing is

    Walkoff Magic In Arlington
    2007-05-14 18:14:38
Rangers 7, Angels 6 Nelson Cruz couldn’t have picked a better time for his first home run of the year. With one swing of the bat, the 26-year-old Cruz ended the Rangers’ 0-5 slide against the Angels this year, with a majestic opposite field blast on an 0-1 pitch from Scot Shields in the bottom of the 9th inning on Sunday afternoon. One of the biggest criticisms of Cruz this season has been that he can’t handle offspeed pitches - he certainly handled Shields’ 81 MPH pitch on the outer half of the plate. Josh Lewin had been explaining moments before the “Cruz Missile” struck that Nelson’s mother and grandmother were in the stands, and how he wanted to please them on Mother’s Day. It may be one of the first times Lewin has ever had good timing in saying something. Cruz’s home run marked Texas’s first walkoff win since May 25th, 2006, when the recently retired Phil Nevin hit a walkoff home run to dead center field off closer Husto

    Reality Check in Arlington
    2007-05-05 00:15:59
The Dallas Mavericks lost Game 6 last night in the 1st round of the NBA playoffs. The loss was a historic one as it was the first time a number one seed had been upset by a number eight seed in a seven game series? So why am I writing about the Mavs on a blog about the Rangers? I believe that these teams have a lot in common. Yes, I understand that the Mavs have been to the playoffs for the last few years, and even the NBA finals last year. Yes, the Rangers haven’t been to the playoffs since 1999, but these teams are facing the same questions and I think the answers are the same. The Mavericks are a team that have gone as far as they are going to go. They are a team on the decline. With several players that won’t play defense, the team with the NBA’s best record needs to trade several of their key players in order to win an NBA championship. The Rangers haven’t had near the success of the Mavericks, but they are in the same position. The Rangers have built a team arou
