Happy Special 17th May Day! - Happy Armed Forces Day!!

Gemstone of the MonthEmeraldFlower of the Month: Lily of the ValleyUpcoming Special Days26 May - Memorial Day (US)29 May - Oak Apple DayAs usual patents crop up regularly when looking at our history and it was on this day in 1845 that the humble rubber band was patented by the Englishman Stephen Perry. Great Stuff! Of much more interest and fun is the next patent on this day in 1846 of the saxophone by the Belgian Antoine Joseph Sax. Who said there weren’t any famous Belgians? In a famously good deal it was on this day in 1884 that Alaska became a US territory. The price paid was $7.2 million which worked out at around $0.02 cents per acre. I wonder what it’s worth today! In a poor choice of words it was on this day in 1916 that British Summer Time was first introduced in the UK. First of all the timing is nowhere near “summer” and even if it was, what summer? The other thing Nomanda has never understood is why the UK (and for some unfathomable reason, Portugal) wants to be out o

Armed Forces get little respite in Sixth Pay Commission report
    2008-03-25 05:13:00
TO COMPENSATE the hardships faced by soldiers and match trends of modern armies around the world, the Sixth Pay Commission has reeommended a military service pay (MSP) of Rs 6,000 per month for off cers (up to brigadier) and Rs 1,000 for personnel below officer rank. In its report submitted to the government on Monday, the Justice B.N. Srikrishna-headed panel has also enhanced the grade pay (rank pay) for armed forces personnel to lend some respectability to their take-home package. The rank pay

Hike invites muted cheers from forces (Sixth Pay Commission for Armed forces)
    2008-03-25 05:05:00
They can graduate from plain old rum to premium whisky now. But scotch will still largely remain beyond their reach. It was only two cheers, muted ones at that, by the armed forces for the recommendations of Sixth Central Pay Commission. Grappling with a severe shortage of officers and flopping miserably to attract enough youngsters with “officer-like qualities”, coupled with many seeking “premature retirement” for greener pastures, the armed forces were expecting a doubling of their

Bowl Preview: Armed Forces, Sun, Humanitarian
    2007-12-30 22:10:00
California v. Air Force: Armed Forces BowlCal finally seemed poised to seriously contend for a national title back in October as they were ranked second in the nation. However, their 5-0 start was nothing more than a mirage, as the Bears then lost six out of their last seven games, including a 20-13 defeat to Stanford in the Big Game. One of the biggest reasons for Cal's collapse was the erratic play of quarterback Nate Longshore and wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Ever since their September victory against Oregon, Longshore had been playing with a chipped bone in his right ankle, which was not known while he was playing. The injury forced Longshore to get rid of the ball quickly, which resulted in 11 interceptions over the last six games. While having big games against Tennessee and Oregon, Jackson struggled mightily with consistency and completely disappeared in several games. Cal's most consistent offensive threat was running back Justin Forsett (pictured), who rushed for 1,406 yards and 13 touchdowns. While Air Force certainly has a good enough offense with quarterback Shaun Carney and running back Chad Hall to put pressure on Cal's average defense, I can not envision Jeff Tedford letting the Bears lose other game to inferior opponent, especially when his quarterback finally appears healthy. California 31-28Oregon v. South Florida: Sun BowlMuch like Cal, Oregon was another Pac Ten that had a chance to appear in the national championship game on January 7th. However, that opportunity fell apart on November 19th when quarterback Dennis Dixon went down with an injury in the first quarter. Without Dixon, the Ducks lost their final three games to Arizona, UCLA, and Oregon State. While they did finally show some life against Oregon State, it is hard to see the Ducks regrouping against a talented USF team. Back in October, South Florida (which is actually in Tampa) was ranked number two in the BCS. They feature an outstanding quarterback in Matt Grothe, who has run fo
