Role of TNF in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
    2008-07-09 10:18:33
Psoriasis is an immunologically mediated, hyperproliferative disorder. T cells and cytokines play central roles in the pathophysiology of psoriasis with TNF-α as an essential primary cytokine for cellular signaling during the immune responses. Continued unregulated production of TNF-α as seen in the chronic inflammation of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis can lead to the consequences of tissue disruption, joint injury, and excessive keratinocyte proliferation by the mechanisms stated above. By self-perpetuated upregulation of receptors, TNF-α creates a positive feedback loop, amplifying and maintaining the inflammatory process within psoriatic plaques. TNF-α induces chemokines that find increased receptors on inflammatory lymphocytes in psoriasis. High levels of TNF-α in psoriatic lesions and in psoriatic arthritis synovial fluid, as well as evidence of correlation of disease severity and TNF-α levels have all provided credibility for the role of TNF-α in psoriasis. Therefore,

    Does Running Cause Arthritis?
    2008-05-19 06:26:15
Is it a foregone conclusion, that if you run for years, you will have arthritis? Many of my patients are concerned that the aches and pains that are inevitable from distance running are actually harbingers for the future aches and pains of arthritis. This fear is even strong enough to get older runners to quit and start a lower impact exercise regimen like swimming and cycling. Is this a reasonable fear? Yes and No! Running by itself does not cause arthritis; improper biomechanics coupled with the rigors of running can cause arthritis.Consider the stress of running on the joints for a minute. The foot hits the ground and the bones and joints experience force up to six times the runner's body weight at impact. The joints are being asked to move and glide efficiently and smoothly while enduring this stress. In the event of a misstep or stumble, the joints need to continue to be stable to maintain their perfect alignment.Osteoarthritis, a.k.a. "wear and tear arthritis", is what runner's d

    Nutrition Tips for Arthritis
    2008-03-30 21:41:00
Arthritis can happen at any age. Sore joints begin to limit the activities you enjoy. The knuckles on your fingers seem swollen, your knees and ankles seem to ache a lot, your back hurts when you wake up in the morning. Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, which makes up cartilage. Cartilage cushions bones, and not having enough leads to deterioration and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C is thought to play a role in treating rheumatoid arthritis because it battles free radicals that injure cartilage. The ratio of omega 3 to 6 to 9's is weighted towards the high end in most foods, but the body needs more 3's. These are the long chain fatty acids which help fight inflammation. Newer Rheumatoid Arthritis Drugs Lower Production of B Cells
    2008-01-29 21:53:48
(HealthDay News) -- Certain drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) provide a powerful, previously unknown, benefit for the immune system, say University of Rochester Medical Center researchers. They found that drugs known as anti-TNF compounds -- including Enbrel, Humira and Remicade -- help reduce the activity of abnormal B cells that play a role in autoimmune diseases such as RA and lupus. TNF is a chemical messenger that fires up the immune system. Anti-TNF drugs inhibit TNF.The findings, published in the Jan. 15 issue of The Journal of Immunology, suggest that these drugs improve the health of patients in a way that hadn't been recognized, the researchers said."The most important considerations for any drug are: Is it safe, and does it work? The answer is certainly 'yes' to both questions for these anti-TNF compounds. The drugs have revolutionized the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. But it also turns out that, even though millions of patients been treated wit

Arthritis painShoulder painBursitis Tennis elbowPain and tightness between the shoulder blades Swelling (edema)Injury to a joint, such as the elbow or shoulder, or arthritic inflammation can be quite painful. A combination of diet and shiatsu effectively deals with these common problems. If an injury has occurred, shiatsu can inhibit swelling. It can also reduce the pain.In the case of arthritis, the macrobiotic diet is the key in alleviating the symptoms. Extremes of food aggravate arthritic symptoms. Beef, eggs and other animal foods, fruits, fruit juice (especially tropical varieties), spices, stimulant and aromatic herbs, soft drinks, sugar, honey, chocolate, vinegar, and especially the entire nightshade family (tomato, potato, eggplant, bell pepper, and tobacco) have been linked with increased arthritic pain. In addition, oil and fat contribute to arthritis. Its symptoms are also aggravated by excessive intake of liquid and icy drinks such as soda and beer.

    2007-05-23 08:29:00
Medical experts advise that the foundation for the sound management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) should include weight maintenance and a healthy diet. Research has shown that RA is a product of an eating regimen that is heavy in saturated fat, processed foods, refined carbohydrates and sugar. To help prevent RA or manage its symptoms, one should have ample servings of whole foods, fruits and vegetables, and foods that are rich in fatty acids.Paying close attention to these five factors will go a long way towards solving the root causes of rheumatoid arthritis. Emotional Issues Major Factor in Arthritis Pain
    2007-04-23 02:50:00
A new study is the first to directly compare the brain areas involved in processing osteoarthritis (OA) pain and experimental pain. The results indicated that emotions play a strong role in how patients feel arthritis pain.Advances in neuroimaging have led to the discovery that the brain processes pain in a network of brain structures that have been called the pain matrix. The pain matrix contains two parallel systems: the medial pain system, which processes the emotional aspects of pain, and the lateral system, which processes the physical sensations. The new study examined 12 patients with knee OA. All subjects had their brain activity measured with positron emission tomography (PET) while experiencing arthritic knee pain, experimental pain achieved by heat application, and while pain-free.Both pain conditions activated the entire pain matrix. However, activity was increased within the medial pain system of the brain during arthritic pain. This suggests that arthritis pain has a strong
