| | Firefighters battle forest fire on Athens outskirts | | 2008-06-25 16:15:00 | | Firefighters battled a major fire Wednesday on Mount Hymettus on the outskirts of Athens that burned through one of the Greek capital's last forests but posed no threat to homes."We are trying to contain the fire, a very difficult blaze which moved with incredible speed," fire department spokesman Yiannis Kapakis told the Mega television channel.Thirty-seven fire engines, 150 firefighters, 100 soldiers, 13 water bombers and four helicopters were mobilised to fight the blaze that broke out shortly after midday near Glyka Nera, around 30 kilometres (20 miles) east of Athens.Winds over 50 kilometres (30 miles) an hour pushed the flames to the summit of the mountain, out of reach of ground units, but firefighting aircraft kept the flames from reaching the suburbs of Holargos and Papagou on the other side."Homes are not in danger, but a beautiful forest is threatened," Glyka Nera mayor George Siokos told state television NET.

| | Athens, Greece | | 2008-06-11 07:55:00 | | BreakfastWe went to the buffet for breakfast again, mostly the same old stuff so I didn't bother taking pictures. We had the lemon almond pastry today (they do seem to serve different flavors daily) which was very good.LunchThe ship parks in Piraeus so we had to take the train into Athens, where we walked around Plaka, an area known for shopping and flea markets, and looked up at the Acropolis. We were too lazy to walk to the top, which was under construction anyway. We tried to wander a bit away from the main tourist area to find food, which did end up being at least 30% cheaper than restaurants closer to Acropolis, but the food wasn't that great. The host at Ioakh Barbeque recommended the Leftiko, a braised lamb shank, which had little flavor and was unevenly heated, but the tomatoes were great.I was really looking forward to having Moussaka in Greece but this was a let down. The bechamel was over-cooked, a bit curdled actually, and the whole dish was rather dry.Post LunchLon and I l | | By: FoodMayhem | | |

| | 36 Hours in Athens | | 2008-05-03 02:32:00 | | Once the private grounds of Greece’s long-deposed royal family, the National Gardens is one of the few leafy oases in Athens. Cypress, pine and palm trees shade trails, brooks, bridges, duck ponds, a botanical museum and prides of stray cats. The stately parliament building is next door and faces the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, where tourists try to distract the photogenic young evzones (the elite military guards who wear the skirt-like foustanella).

| | Athens on Long Island? | | 2007-11-21 07:53:00 | | I was watching a show on PBS the other evening on democracy in ancient Athens. While it was by no means a perfect system, I found the idea of a broader, more inclusive voting system on issues to be interesting and thought that perhaps it could be incorporated into the "One Long Island" project in some way.I will explore this concept further as time permits. | | By: Long Island Idea Factory | | |
| | Hydra, Greece: Magical island a world away from Athens | | 2007-10-18 19:13:00 | | The Greek island of Hydra (two hours south of Athens by hydrofoil) has one town, no real roads, no cars, not even any bikes. Zippy taxi boats whisk you from the brisk little port to isolated beaches and tavernas. Sure-footed beasts of burden climb stepped lanes -- laden with everything from sandbags and bathtubs to bottled water. Behind each mule-train toils a human pooper-scooper. I imagine picking up after your beast is required.

| | Liverpool Bows Out In Athens | | 2007-05-23 23:16:00 | | The European Champions League championship was won by AC Milan in Athens today, as Liverpool lost, 2-1. AC Milan avenged the loss they suffered at the hands of Liverpool two years ago in Turkey. That was the incredible night when Liverpool was down, 3-0 and came all the way back to tie before winning the title on penalty kicks. It wasn't to be, as AC Milan led 1-0 at halftime, and then 2-0, both on goals by Filippo Inzaghi. Dirk Kuyt got the Liverpool goal in the 88th minute and it looked like Liverpool might stage an incredible comeback, but it was not meant to be.Congratulations to AC Milan on their title. It was a nice run for Liverpool all the way to the title game. You did the Liverpool fans from Merseyside and around the world proud, guys. | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
| | Liverpool Goes To Athens | | 2007-05-02 06:34:00 | | Liverpool booked a place in the European Champions League Final in Athens on Tuesday with a 4-1 penalty shootout win over Chelsea at Anfield.Chelsea won the first match of the home-and-home semifinal, 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. They will face either AC Milan or Manchester United. Those two teams will play on Wednesday in Milan, and Man U won the first match, 3-2.
