Chinese Lawyers To Settle Disputes Between Olympic Athletes
    2008-06-23 00:39:10
The Chines Olympic organizing committee has assigned a group of local Beijing practicing lawyers to help settle disputes in the 2008 Olympic Games in case the need arises. The Court of Arbitration for Sports had setup a 12-member arbitration court for the Olympics. They will primarily be assigned to those participating athletes who do not have any lawyers but would need legal help. The group of 12 Chinese lawyers, though well versed in legal procedures in general, do not have experience in Sports arbitration. They will be undergoing a month long training to be able to understand the intricacies of Sports arbitration just in time for the kick-off at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games in August.

    National athletes get more benefits
    2008-05-29 20:56:00
National athletes to get P15,000, more benefitsThe Philippine Sports Commission on Thursday announced a new scheme that would benefit only the few remaining athletes and coaches who make the cut in the national pool.Chairman Butch Ramirez said the PSC would soon implement a plan to cut the number of athletes and coaches under the government payroll and, correspondingly, increase the benefits for those retained. From more than a thousand, the number of athletes will go down to around 600. But effective Sunday, what they used to receive from the PSC will almost be doubled.Non-medalists for two consecutive stagings of the SEA Games will automatically be dropped from the pool, and those who remain will start receiving P15,000 a month in allowances."The amount includes their meal allowances of P350 a day if they are billeted with us, and P100 a day if they stay with their families. They will now have more in their pockets," said Ramirez. The heads of 44 different NSAs (national sports associa

Mexico Wants More Athletes To Make The Cut
    2008-05-06 04:11:33
Mexico so far has 66 athletes that have earned passes to participate in China's Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, all hoping to win some medal but the truth is that they only have chances to participate in 7-9 finals.Mexico still aims to send 85 athletes to Beijing-2008, while this Latin American country sent 114 athletes to Athens 2004, where they earned four medals, two silver and two bronze. Mexico's team sports will be absent from Beijing 2008 since their men's and women's soccer teams failed to earn Beijing 2008 passes, and so did this country's baseball team.Mexican sports officials have stated Beijing 2008 will be difficult for Mexican athletes, since local sports officials claim they have not had enough time to get ready for the games since the current Mexican Sports leader Carlos Hermosillo has only ben heading the post since 2006. Mexican sports officials only promise to fight from seven to nine finals in Beijing 2008."We cannot forecast how many medals we are going to win, it is n

Athletes And Plastic Surgery - Viable Or Not?:
    2008-04-18 07:29:00
Anna Kournikova is looking very toned and sexy these days. The trademark tubby body that we are used to seeing in female tennis stars has disappeared from the Russian bombshell’s body. Anna may be a plastic surgery teetotaler though, as she looks just like she did when she made her debut on the tennis courts. Oh her weight did fluctuate over the years, but on the whole she looks the same. But there are athletes and sportsmen who have dabbled in plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancement from time to time. There were the nasal strips that surfaced in the previous decade which promised to increase air intake for athletes. More often than not, plastic surgery among athletes tends to lean towards the reconstructive/corrective type. Sportsmen and women who are actively into sports have been observed to display a condition called ‘athletic pubalgia’ or sports hernia which occurs in the area where the muscle meets the pevis. The problem can be effectively solved using endoscopic surger

Drugged Animals? - How About Drugged Athletes like Marion Jones?
    2007-10-05 22:13:00
Oh Marion, oh Marion, girl I’m mad at you. Taking them drugs, huh? The temptation was too strong, huh? Do anything to win, huh? Not you...Marion, you took steriods? Shame on you. I’ll tell you, this drug taking mess is about to kill me. Mark Mcguire, Barry Bonds and now, my darling Marion Jones. She took steriods, she has admitted it. This revelation is so sad. Marion Jones succumbed to that - how does it go? That “win at all cost” mentality, a mindset that assures that a good and honest athlete will go bad and do something demeaning and cheat to win. Marion is the latest top ranked athlete to admit using drugs to enhance her performance. This revelation is another blown to the image of our beloved sports world. We fans have become accustom to hearing that our sports heroes are drug users. Marion Jones is, indeed, a special and very talented athlete, but how much of her talent came from her use of steriods? This is the question we will always want to know and unfortunately, sha

Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disorder and very closely related to Crohn's disease. Pisani had 14 goals and 14 assists in 77 games with Edmonton last season. After scoring 14 goals in the 2006 playoffs, Pisani was rewarded with a four-year, $10 million contract in the offseason.Hard to believe that at 30 he is younger than me. Author-athletes score big with books geared to children
    2007-07-23 01:29:00
Kids scream his name at the ballpark, and kids beg for his autograph after batting practice. But the kids who make Alex Rodriguez feel like a rock star, the ones who give the Yankee slugger the warm fuzzies, are the kids who know he's an author."The biggest thrill I get is when a kid comes up to me and says, 'I love your book,' " the third baseman -- and, yes, writer -- says. "I never thought I could write children's books."Kind of how parents probably never thought that sitting on their bookshelves, next to Dr. Seuss, would be a Yankee. Or a Giant. Or Terrell Owens.

USATF Selection Process "Strongly Favored by the Athletes"
    2007-07-13 10:14:06
I recently corresponded with Jill Geer, USATF Director of Communications, regarding the USATF's current selection process. Here is the exchange:Hi, Jill. I hope all is well. Sanya Richards should trounce TEAM USA in the women's 400m dash at the Golden Gala in Rome. Once she does, questions will arise again about the seemingly imperfect selection process that the USATF currently has. If she wins, it could be easily argued that we aren't sending our best women's 400m team to Osaka. It could also be argued just as easily that she should have made the team when she was required to do so. Care to comment on this dilemma?Regards,Jimmie R. MarkhamFinish Line PunditHere is her reply:Jimmie:Any selection system is imperfect, but our system is strongly favored by the athletes, since under this system, they select themselves to the team – not somebody sitting in an office ordaining a team. They understand the system and know what they need to do to make the team, instead of being subject to someone else’s judgement call or personal preferences. It is the only purely objective selection system.Unfortunately, one consequence of this system is that sometimes you do have the stunning development such as Sanya not making the team or Dan O’Brien no-heighting in the pole vault in ’92 – situations where Team USA almost certainly loses a modal. However, the self-selection system also results in unlikely athletes making the team and then going on to win medals. For instance, in 2004, I doubt that Lauryn Williams would be on anybody’s ‘chosen’ list to make the team, but she won the Olympic silver medal and went on to become a World Champion at 100 meters. I remember Calvin Davis miraculously making the 1996 Olympic Team in the men’s 400 hurdles, taking third at the Olympic Trials. He ended up winning a bronze medal at the Games. There are countless examples like this.It is very unfortunate that Sanya did not make the team in the 400 – to say everyone was shoc

    Athletes Foot and Panda Pooh

Good News for American Track & Field Athletes
    2007-06-28 18:22:00
The latest IAAF newsletter is out and, guess what? No Americans are on the "Athletes Sanctioned for Doping Offenses" list on page 7!Here is a list of countries cited, in descending order of number of athletes sanctioned:Iran, 8France, 2Turkey, 2Great Britain, 1Jamaica, 1China, 1Brazil, 1Slovenia, 1Belgium, 1Nepal, 1Russia, 1South Africa, 1What, you might ask, is Nepal doing on the doping sanctions list? Apparently, steroids are handed out like chocolates in Nepali sport. In fact, they are chocolates! Here's an article in which the Nepalese athlete who got sanctioned, Rajendra Bhandari, states that his victory in the men's 5000m at the 10th South Asian Games, "is due to my hard work and effort from the coaches." Now that Bhandari has been suspended for 2 years and his victory at the South Asian Games has been nullified due to the "presence of the prohibited substance Norandrosterone (S1. Anabolic Agents) in his doping control sample," we know what kind of "effort from the coaches"

Let's hear less from ex-athletes on TV
    2007-05-14 18:04:00
Jeanne Zelasko deserves credit for standing up for what’s right.During the pregame show on Fox-TV’s baseball Game of the Week, the topic of comments Curt Schilling from the Red Sox made recently about Barry Bonds arose.Kevin Kennedy, being an ex-player, stood up for Bonds and said Schilling was way out of line for his comments (who cares if Schilling told the truth originally, before retracting his statement?)Zelasko responded it’s a fact that Bonds took steroids … and let’s move on to another conversation.Good for her! It’s about time we hear more from “people who never played the game” such as Zelasko and Ken Rosenthal on Fox baseball, or football analysts such as Chris Mortensen (ESPN) and Adam Schechter (NFL Network.)For most of us, it’s getting old hearing athletes … or ex-athletes … defend the poor behavior of other athletes. What we need are more people like Zelasko, who will stand up to the excuse-making athletes covering for the shame of others.
