| Fremonth Athletics BallPark Update | | 2008-05-11 23:12:58 | | It’s been a few months since I updated the latest on the situation of the A’s new ballpark in Fremont. It was starting to look like the stadium might be open on 2010 or 2011, but now according to a more recent article here, it looks like its most likely to be 2012. | | SDSU athletics: A no win situation? | | 2008-04-24 22:25:00 | | As spring football practice concludes this weekend at San Diego State, the old football vs. academics debate has resurfaced.Specifically, the academics are wondering why SDSU President Stephen Weber gives so much discretionary funding to football as cutbacks in the classroom continue. Here were some of the arguments in last Sunday’s San Diego Union-Tribune:Former SDSU football player and long-time actor Fred Dryer: “The benefits of a successful football program are overwhelming. Such a program breeds pride and participation from the community, students and alumni.”English Professor Peter C. Herman: “SDSU is subsidizing 42 percent of the athletics budget, about double the average for the NCAA's top-tier programs. Every academic department at SDSU must meet its budget, or face consequences. Why not football?”Let’s take a look at the success rate of academics vs. athletics:Academics –For two years in a row, SDSU has been ranked the No. 1 most productive research university, a | | By: San Diego Sporting | | |

Big Duel Today
Well, it's not a winner-take-all, but today's day-night doubleheader could give either Ryan Dempster or Jon Lieber that much more of an edge for one of the final pitching spots. Both will be pitching for their respective split squad clubs today, with Dempster facing the Athletics during the day and Lieber squaring off against the Giants later tonight.
With Zambrano, Lilly and Hill (even though he's gone into Nuke LaLoosh mode apparently) all guaranteed spots, the fight for the final two has come down to Marquis, Dempster and Lieber (sorry Sean Marshall fans, it ain't happening). Marquis had a decent outing yesterday, giving up five hits and one run while striking out five in five innings. His ERA in spring training so far is 1.93.
For the pitchers going today, here's a quick breakdown of how Dempster (2-1 overall, 4 starts) and Lieber (1-0, 2 starts) have performed in spring training:

Lou's new mantra for spring training!
Carl touched on it in his headlines this morning, but the topic for today (because I'm sure as hell not going to discuss why the hell Ed Campusano is on a spring training roster, much less ours) is the importance (or lack thereof) of spring training records.
Here's Lou's quote from this morning:
"I'm getting tired of losing ballgames, even in spring training."
As it is, the Cubs stand at 2-7. And while records really don't matter in the long run when it comes to spring training, I kind of like Lou's quote. I certainly don't get as mad when I see the Cubs lose spring training games, but there is a little disappointment. However, there are some positives to build on, such as Z looking dominant, Dome settling in, D-Lee possibly returning to old D-Lee form and how well Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano have been playing ... oh, wait.
For shits and giggles, here's the Cubs' spring training records over the last five years--

2006: 16-15

| | Athletics, Rangers Brawl In Wild 11-9 Shootout | | 2007-09-17 08:18:09 | | On an afternoon where the NFL took center stage in the sports world, the Rangers and Athletics suited up in preparation for their series finale at McAfee Coliseum.
And then a football game broke out.

| | Wright Dominates Athletics; Otsuka/Padilla Injury Updates | | 2007-07-17 08:52:23 | | It’s nice to finally see Ron Washington smiling.
On March 16th, I put forth the theory that Jamey Wright was the 2007 version of Pedro Astacio, a mediocre retread veteran who had nowhere to go but down. I hated the decision to make Wright the #5 starter out of spring training rather than Kameron Loe or Bruce Chen, and I still question some of the logic behind that organizational decision.
Jamey Wright may still be a mediocre veteran pitcher, but I’ll be danged if he wasn’t great tonight. Spreading just four hits and three walks across seven shutout innings, Wright pitched his finest game as a Texas Ranger, and dominated a struggling Oakland lineup in a 4-1 Rangers win.
Wright has now thrown four consecutive starts where he has given up two runs or less in at least five innings of work. With Vicente Padilla’s health failing (more on that in a moment), Jamey’s spot in the rotation seems secure. Well, for the time being at least.
As for the Rangers offense, M | | By: Baseball Time in Arlington | | |
| | New Track and Field...er, that is, Athletics Blog | | 2007-06-22 18:54:00 | | Athletics Weekly, the British version of Track and Field News, seems to have quietly started a new blog. I have found only 3 posts, and I can't imagine older posts would just disappear, so it seems that we've managed to jump on board right as this blog is leaving the station. As expected, the posts tend to focus on British athletics. So far, Jason Henderson, Editor at Athletics Weekly, has written about the relationship between high IQ and athletics performance. Britta Sendlhofer has written about sponsorship of British Athletics. Henderson has also published a post about the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa, so the blogging is not excusively about British athletics. If you want some insight into the British perspective on track and field... er, that is, athletics, their new blog is certainly worth checking out. | | By: Finish Line Pundit: A Track & Field Blog | | |
| | An African Advantage in Athletics? | | 2007-05-30 08:23:00 | | Ken Stone from Masters Track writes with a challenge: "OK, here's a subject that should generate interest: Are sprinters descended from West Africa naturally superior to all others? Are distance runners with roots in East Africa naturally superior to all others?"Thanks for the question Ken. This is a sensitive and controversial topic. Author Jon Entine, in his book Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports and Why We're Afraid to Talk About It (PublicAffairs, 2001), writes that, "anyone who attempts to breach this taboo to study or even discuss what might be behind the growing performance gap between black and white athletes must be prepared to run a gauntlet of public scorn, survival not guaranteed."Even so, the proof would seem to be overwhelmingly in the affirmative. This article from 2002, discussing the positive impact of black athletes in the sport of bobsledding states that "athletes of West African ancestry... hold 494 of the 500 top, all-time, 100-meter times." | | | Excellent Adventure in the Politics of Kenyan Athletics | | 2007-05-24 03:28:00 | | Something strange is afoot at the Circle K, or rather, in Kenyan athletics. First there was a story about some Kenyan marathoners who were AWOL from their national awards ceremony. Apparently there wasn't enough "recognition" to go around, at least in the marathoners' estimation. The Kenyan government shelled out 2.3 million shillings ($33,000 USD) worth of recognition to the runners and coaches of the Kenyan cross-country team, who won the World Cross-Country Championships. The marathoners, having won more than that in prize money at international competitions this past year, were only awarded some microwave ovens. Bogus!International marathon wins are not as prestigious to Kenyan officials as are World Championships or Olympic medals. Makes sense to me, dude. The marathoners are of a different opinion, however, and threatened to "refuse to represent the country in the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games." No way! Yes way!Later there was a clear-the-air meeting between Athletics Ken | | By: Finish Line Pundit: A Track & Field Blog | | |
