    2008-06-06 14:45:59
On Cafe Philos this morning: Australian police have decided NOT to prosecute artist Bill Henson and his gallery Roslyn Oxley9 on charges of pornography. They were following the advice of Nicholas Cowdery, NSW Director of Public Prosecutions, who felt there was no reasonable prospect of conviction, particularly in this complex and “notoriously difficult” area involving [...]

Chinese authorities bring out the drug-sniffing dogs for Mazda Taiki
    2008-04-21 06:30:00
So you're a customs officer in Beijing, and out of the trailer you're inspecting is hauled a... a what? The Japanese people who have accompanied it, who claim to be from Mazda, also claim that it's a concept car. Frankly, it could also be a submarine, or it might eat people -- or it could be an elaborate ruse for hauling drugs or bombs. So the officials at Beijing airport let the dogs out to sniff for, well, probably everything. Finding nothing, the Taiki was allowed to roll on to the Beijing Auto Show. Nothing in there but coffee grounds, sir, just coffee...[Source: The Tycho][Concept Cars, China, Etc., Mazda, concept, drug, drugs, mazda, mazda taiki concept, MazdaTaikiConcept, taiki]

The Hurricane, and the Man the Authorities Came to Blame
    2007-10-15 09:34:00
Carny folk like the guy pictured here (from whom we feel no need whatsoever to dissociate ourselves, as anyone who goes to work with white knee-length socks and a personal fan is unlikely to consult legal advice on matters relating to libel) like firemen, police officers, bus drivers and rodeo clowns, are placed in positions of trust, and are counted upon daily to take good care to properly bolt down the Vomit Coasters and tilt-a-whirls of this world (keen-eyed readers will note an unprecedented, back to back referencing of tilt-a-whirls, in our estimation, a blogosphere first). While we appreciate that the repeated exposure to objects going around and around in circles represents a rather obvious metaphor for the cards you've been dealt by the great blackjack dealer in the sky (an allegory Pat Sajak would flatly deny), that's no reason whatsoever to be asked to 'step, right up, don't be shy' to a Breathalyzer like the operator of a 'the Hurricane' ride was at a South Carolina c

    2007-10-12 22:33:46
Get a judgment somewhere in China. Then try to collect. There is little value in a judgment when the authorities flout its enforcement. Read this Washington Post article. The local government, against whom the judgment was entered, won’t pay and can’t be forced to. Yuci township, the subject of the story, is [...]

The Single Mothers and Children...are Used to the Indifference of the Authorities
    2007-07-23 14:33:00
    J. Pat Carter/Associated Press New York TimesWEST PALM BEACH, Fla., July 16 — The single mothers and children who fill most of the apartments at Dunbar Village — a housing project on the poor, black, north side of this city — are used to nightly gunfire. They are used to theft, assault, murder and the indifference of federal and local authorities.Citoya Greenwood has asked officials to take action at Dunbar Village, the site of the attack, where she lives with her daughter, Joya. After dark on June 18, the police say, as many as 10 armed assailants repeatedly raped a Haitian immigrant in her apartment at Dunbar Village and then went further, forcing her to perform oral sex on her 12-year-old son. Five Young Girls Found Dead -When Authorities Don't do Their Job Innocent People Die
    2007-07-18 17:30:00
Serial Killer Should Have Been deported In 1990, he was charged with the violent rape of his 16-year-old half sister; a charge which was later changed to incest, for which he served a minimal 2 month jail sentence, during which he had to undergo therapy. During therapy, when he was again diagnosed as having an “extremely problematic” personality, it is considered that the authorities were negligent in not recognizing the danger. He was only classified as a level I, or low risk sex offender. Following his jail sentence, Adhahn worked in the food industry, for American Nicheri Food and as travelling delivery man for Pizza Hut. His next conviction was for intimidation with a deadly weapon in 1992. This, being his second conviction ought to have resulted in Adhahn being deported to Thailand, though because of legal technicalities like not regarding incest as a felony, merely a “crime of moral turpitude”, it would take a second offence to effect deportation. During the period 1986 t

Internet Scams Rise : Authorities Lack Inclination to Curtails This Kind Abuse
    2007-06-22 14:00:00
But there's no one way that people try to take advantage of the elderly. Greenwood described a contractor scam, in which contractors tell elderly homeowners that they need crucial structural work done immediately and if the owner will just write a check, the contractor will fix it. Or there's the salesmen who persuade 85-year-olds to purchase 10-year annuities—a legal transaction, but perhaps not practical. But Kulinski, Cartier and Greenwood all spoke to CityBeat about the "in" con: The Canadian Lottery Scam. The grift runs like the Nigerian scams so common over e-mail. An elder—let's call her "Ethel"—receives a letter congratulating her on winning the Canadian lottery. The envelope contains a check for the first payment, but to get the rest, she needs to pay the taxes on it. To find out how best to pay the taxes, all Ethel need do is call the number in the letter to figure out where she should send the tax payment. Naturally, even if Ethel sends the money, she will never rece

TURKMENISTAN: The Turkmen authorities Invites TNK-BP and LUKOIL
    2007-06-16 17:08:00
Turkmen authorities have announced the readiness of TNK-BP and LUKOIL to take part in the development of gas and oil deposits in the country. LUKOIL has been offered three blocks on the continental shelf. This is the first time that TNK-BP's interest in Turkmenistan has become known. Observers suspect that new President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov's desire for investment, rather than the Russian companies' desire to development Turkmen deposits that motivated the decisions. The announcements were made by the president's press service. LUKOIL confirmed that its president, Vagit Alekperov, had been in Ashgabat, but a source in the oil company said that “they hurried with the announcement about the lots on the shelf.” TNK-BP representatives, including chairman Robert Dudley and executive director German Khan, were in Turkmenistan Monday and Tuesday. That company has no foreign assets. It is about to lose the Kovykta deposit, one of its largest domestic assets. However, this is
