    Dinner, Olympics, Balloons and Beards
    2008-08-12 20:27:00
We had dinner out tonight. Bart had a coupon and it was kids eat free night. Of course, we only have two kids, the rest are adults, but I digress....When my food arrived, Leon said, "that's why you aren't in the Olympics." Even though I only planned to eat half of my sandwich apparently it was more than he thought I should eat. Then they brought HIS plate full of food -- which was twice the amount of food I had ordered. I asked him, "Why aren't YOU in the Olympics?" "I'm too young" he said, as if I was stupid not to know.Dominyk suggested maybe it was time for him to start shaving. He asked how you know. "When you have a lot of beard" Ricardo told him.The balloon guy was at the restaurant, so we got balloons and I took pictures. But Ricardo, as usual would not cooperate with my photography efforts.

Sunhope Solar Balloons for anytime anywhere power
    2008-04-11 15:03:19
Joseph Cory, of Geotectura has teamed up with Technion aerospace engineer Dr. Pini Gurfil to develop an array of helium-filled platforms constructed from a new fabric coated with photovoltaic solar cells. Dubbed Sunhope, the project is showing great promise as a low-cost deployable system that would harness solar energy while maintaining a minuscule environmental footprint. These solar balloons are as low-impact as power plants get, since their infrastructure is composed entirely of a control panel, a helium supply cable, and a power cable. Residential possibilities are great since one or two balloons can fulfill all the power requirements of a house. Cory and Gurfil have constructed several prototypes and have conducted research to show that a 10 ft balloon could provide around a kilowatt of energy (equivalent to 25 square meters of solar panels). The best part about this balloon is that it focuses on going vertical instead of the massive sprawl of going horizontal and making the land

60-Second Science: Solar Energy Via Balloons
    2008-03-28 08:54:02
From Scientific American: One of the problems with large-scale solar power plants is that they require a huge amount of space. To rise above that problem, Israeli researchers recently patented a system of solar-collecting balloons. The helium-filled globes will be covered with thin

How to Disable Security Center Alerts and Balloons Warning
    2008-03-27 09:33:43
How to Disable Security Center AlertsTo turn off Security Center alertsDo you ever get annoyed with the Windows Security Center Pop-Up telling you that you are not protected because you do not have any Anti-Virus Software, or Automatic Updates is turned off? Well so was I. That is why I searched the internet for the answer and I finally found it. In light of that here are detailed instructions on how to disable those Balloon hint tips from the Windows Security Center.1.Click Start and then click Control Panel.2.Double-click Security Center.3.In the Security Center, under Resources, click Change the way Security Center alerts me.4.In the Alert Settings dialog box, clear the Firewall, Automatic Updates, or Virus Protection check boxes, and then click OK.When you use this procedure, the Security Center still displays your status, but does not send you alerts.

Balloons Full of Hydrogen and Possibility
    2008-02-21 07:25:02
When I first read the article on the Wall Street Journal yesterday afternoon I immediately thought to myself "Wow, this would totally make sense." It's a logical move that couldn't come at a better time for the cellular industry. Google is on the verge of revolutionizing the cellular industry twice in the same year. First with Android and now with a potential contract with Space Data Corp. This is one of those cases where it should have been thought of a long time ago. By putting up roughly 330 balloons a day, they could blanket the country with radio signal and provide users with coast to coast coverage. By beaming down from 20 miles up, the signal would be free from interruptions typically caused by mountains, trees, water, etc. Imagine being able to use a cell phone out on the ocean! If this deal goes through, you'll not have to worry about the limitations caused by zoning restrictions. Depending on how the 700MHz auction falls out, there could be even more potential. Think

Google to Use Balloons for Wireless Signal?
    2008-02-20 21:16:07
Here's a fun one to think about. What's cheaper than building a boat-load of cell towers to spread signal? How about putting balloons about 20 miles up in the sky? Somewhere between tower-based radios and satellite signals, a box can be attached to a 'space balloon' that has components acting as a radio tower. Signal could be sent out over thousands of square miles without the worry of mountains, trees, and ridiculously tall people. So why bring this up? Read on. Google is considering a contract with Space Data, a company that launches 10 balloons a day in the southern parts of the US. Helping truckers and oil companies stay in touch, one of their balloons could replace the need for 40 cell towers. And if a contract with them doesn't appear to be in the stars, perhaps Google will just outright buy them. According to one source, Google is pondering both options right now. And not surprisingly, neither company wanted to comment on the matter. Check back for more on this one, as

Larry in the sky with balloons
    2007-10-15 10:07:00
