Some are calling this one of the worst situation in banking history. Banking crisis going on in America with bank failure, Fannie Mae Freddie Mac bailout. Barclays launches online banking security drive
    2008-07-04 13:32:00
Barclays' two million UK online banking customers are to be offered free security software, the firm has announced.Anti-adware, spyware and viruses shields are to be given to the users for free, following concerns about online accounts being subject to fraud. It is thought that the cost of the bank's move could run to £200 million over two years. However, the importance of security to the online banking sector is thought to be enough to justify this expense: a survey from Abbey last month found that the time users spent on banks' websites exceeds that of MySpace and Facebook combined.Commenting, Sean Gilchrist at Barclays said: "For the last two years we have offered customers free antivirus software but, as internet fraudsters become more sophisticated, it is important that customers protect their computers from all threats and not just viruses."The anti-fraud devices are to be provided by tech firm Kaspersky.

Report: Citigroup to slash investment-banking jobs
    2008-06-22 20:34:00
Report: Citigroup will slash thousands of investment-banking jobs worldwide NEW YORK (AP) -- Citigroup is preparing fire thousands from its worldwide investment-banking division, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, said the layoffs are part of a plan to cut about 10 percent of the staff of the 65,000-member investment-banking group.Messages left with Citigroup spokesmen on Sunday were not immediately returned. The Journal said the fired employees could be notified as early as Monday. The New York-basked global bank, along with much of Wall Street, is in the throes of recovering from bad investments on mortgages and leveraged loans that cut billions of dollars from its portfolio. It was not immediately clear if the reported job cuts would be in addition to cuts announced by Citigroup in April. After reporting a $5.1 billion first-quarter loss, the bank said then it was reducing its staff by 9,000, in addition to the 4,200 job cut

Banking turnaround likely in '09: Goldman
    2008-06-18 11:19:00
The Associated Press June 17, 2008, 12:46PM ETFour major hurdles must be crossed before a broad recovery in the banking sector, and that might not occur for another six to nine months, according to a new research report from Goldman Sachs. The sector is only likely to rebound broadly when credit costs have stabilized, banks complete a process of recapitalization, consensus estimate ranges for earnings narrow and the yield curve steepens, Goldman Sachs analysts wrote in the report, which it based on looking at past credit cycles.Goldman Sachs estimates credit losses resulting from continued deterioration in the mortgage and lending markets will not peak until early 2009, making a broad-based rally in the sector unlikely before the end of 2008. Goldman Sachs estimates peak losses will occur during the first quarter of 2009, with charge-off ratios reaching, on average, 1.39 percent.Charge-off ratios were at about 0.95 percent during the first quarter, and Goldman Sachs expects them to rise

finance:Core Banking Solutions vs Pricing and Billing Solutions.
    2008-06-17 06:19:00
Banks have started realizing the importance of pricing as a banking enterprise entity. Core banking solutions fit well as technology solutions for banks' day-to-day business. However, the core banking solution itself cannot cater to all the fee-income needs of a bank. This is attributable to the complex nature of each bank with regard to its independent departments or business silos and their disparate systems. Over a period of time, what results is a severe inability to visualize the fee income or pricing of charges at the enterprise level. How a Core Banking Solution Works A core banking solution, often referred to as a CBS, typically has a GL subsystem at its core with plug-in satellite modules catering to the various divisions of the bank. The satellite modules, referred to as "modules," cater to the business functionalities of the various lines of business of the bank. Typical CBS modules include but are not limited to: [finance , credit , debt]Non-financial modules: Customer defini

Almost in all countries in the world there has been a discussion about whether to allow banks to engage ‘non-traditional’ activities, such as securities underwriting, insurance underwriting and real estate investment, and mixing banking and commerce, that banks own and control non-financial firms, or non-financial firms own and control banks. Impact of Basel II Accord on banking system and bank behavior
    2008-06-14 11:20:26
There are two major impacts of Basel II on banking system: q The standardized approach often yields much lower regulatory capital levels than the internal model approach, precisely the opposite of what was intended. This may destroy the incentives for banks to migrate toward the IRB approach. It remains an open question just how different the [...]

Grenada Reopens for Offshore Banking Following Massive Fraud
    2008-06-11 03:38:00
Former Oregonian Gilbert Ziegler masterminded a Ponzi scheme, creating the First International Bank of Grenada (FIBG) in 1997, the same year that the country authorized its first offshore bank. Ziegler held a passport from the fabricated Dominion of Melchizedek and backed-up his bank with a 10,000-carat ruby he falsely claimed ownership of and about $14 billion in securities.Ziegler’s Ponzi scheme lured investors with the promise of 300 percent annual interest. The bank took in $170 million and Ziegler fled to Uganda. Although many individuals have been imprisoned, and Ziegler died in 2005 awaiting trial, there is no money left to pay back defrauded investors.Ziegler’s scheme was just the worst of many banking scandals that occurred in Grenada, and charges have been leveled against the government of Prime Minster Keith Mitchell for its involvement in the frauds.Grenada’s government says it is making the necessary reforms, and it has created a single agency to oversee the offshore

    Online Banking User Demographics
    2008-06-11 03:34:00
The February 2008 Pew Internet & American Life Project's "Online Shopping" report focused strictly on US adult Internet users, and found an even higher level of online banking participation: 53% of respondents said they banked online as of September 2007, equivalent to 39% of the total US adult population. Online banking is especially popular with higher-income adults in the US. Nearly seven out of 10 of people surveyed by Pew with annual incomes over $100,000 said they had tried online banking, compared with only 19% of those earning less than $25,000 a year. Unlike many other Web activities, younger users trail when it comes to banking online. Hitwise surveyed US Internet users who visited banking Web sites from December 2007 to January 2008 and found that 28% of respondents were ages 55 and older. Those ages 18 to 24 made up only slightly over 11% of the total.

    2008-06-09 14:12:00
The dollar fell broadly on Tuesday, rattled by signs that the U.S. financial sector, and thus probably the economy, is still far from out of the woods. The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers (LEH.N: Quote, Profile, Research) may raise up to $4 billion in new capital, suggesting the firm could post its first quarterly loss since going public. The news added to risk aversion stoked during the previous session after Standard & Poor's cut its credit

We’re investigating options from Cord Blood Bank of Canada … At birth, stem cell rich cord blood remains in the umbilical cord. Recent advances in medical research have allowed us to identify stem cells as basic building blocks of our bodies. In light of these advances in medicine, people have started saving their baby’s cord blood. Once the baby is delivered, blood is collected from the umbilical cord. It is collected with a syringe by puncturing the umbilical vein immediately after the umbilical cord has been clamped, cut and cleaned with antiseptic solution. The blood is drawn and shipped to us for storage. If your child or family member develops a life-threatening illness, debilitating disease or other condition, a stem cell transplant may be performed. Banking your baby’s cord blood ensures that you’ll have your family’s stem cells readily available as a life-saving resource. … What an insurance policy, but is it practical to bank cord

    INVESTMENT BANKING: An inside story
    2008-05-13 20:20:00
The following article is based largely on the author’s summer internship experience at Banc of America Securities, as well as on interviews conducted with the other analysts at the bank. Investment banking. For an eager job seeker, these two words conjure up magical images of skyscrapers silhouetted against the night sky, high-powered men in pin-striped suits making deals that change the course of the stock market, and glamorous lifestyles paid for by huge bonuses. Looking in from the outside, investment banking may indeed seem like a dream job. The mysterious and oh-so-enticing world of high finance lures the unwary with promises of big paychecks and even bigger opportunities, and hapless econ majors flock to Wall Street like bees to a honey pot. While many of them know what they are getting themselves into, having had internships or otherwise done extensive research, a fairly large portion enters investment banking with only a vague idea of what it entails or the sacrifices tha

    Nigeria: Banks And Global Banking
    2008-05-06 05:02:00
One of the remarkable fall-outs of the last banking consolidation exercise is the opportunity it has presented to Nigerian banks to access the global market. Some Nigerian banks are already taking advantage of the situation and are opening offices all over Africa, Europe and America. Banking which used to be a domestic business is now a global affair. The recent expansion of Nigerian banks into the global market is what the world's wealthy nations have done many years back- establishing branches all over the world. Nigeria banks such as First Bank, Union Bank, UBA, Intercontinental Bank and GT Bank are beginning to branch out gradually into the global market. These steps are no doubt bold and commendable. There has always been global banking. It dates back to hundreds of years particularly during the colonial era when the leading Western nations partitioned the world. The impact of global banks in the market place has also led to several studies in recent years which have enabled us to ha

A recent British study has shown that more people today save their money, which is actually good news. The not so good news? Minister rules out offshore banking
    2008-04-29 03:14:00
Traditional offshore banking which has been affiliated with money laundering will not be one of the services to be provided by the Government's proposed Trinidad and Tobago International Financial Centre (TTIFC). Finance Minister Karen Nunez-Tesheira made the disclosure on Tuesday as she announced the time had come for "an alternate strategy" to move this country's economy away from its dependence on the oil and gas sector. She said development of the financial services sector was one way to do so. Nunez-Tesheira spoke on these issues during a symposium on the TTIFC, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, in downtown Port of Spain. Nunez-Tesheria said the benefits of establishing the TTIFC could be "substantial" since as it could prove to be the key element of a sustainable diversified economy would and would not be provided.

Online banking increased in the UK in January
    2008-04-29 03:10:00
According to the report, nearly 11 million UK users logged on to banking websites. That is about 33% of the total online population. The most populated banking site was Royal Bank of Scotland with 2.9 million users. Lloyds TSB was the most popular brand with 2.9 million users. Lloyds TSB had the most visits per consumer as well with each user logging on nearly 7 times during the month. About 2 million consumers logged on to NatWest's online bank. A few weeks ago, comScore released a similar report based on American online banking habits. That report shows that banks need to increase the customer service offerings on websites to keep customers coming back. From social settings like live chat to widgets offering investment information, consumers want more than the nuts and bolts approach to an online bank.

How to deal with banking crises
    2008-04-25 08:18:30
THE decline and fall of Bear Stearns illustrates both an old truth and a new one. The old truth is that when cash is scarce, he who has deep pockets is king. Bear Stearns is still standing only because JPMorgan Chase was solid enough to prop it up. The new truth lies in the Federal Reserve's role as matchmaker of last resort, smoothing the deal with a temporary loan of $30 billion. This shows just how far a financial supervisor's purview now extends. Even though Bear is not a fully regulated institution, the investment bank was deemed too central to the complex web of America's financial system to be allowed to fail.Private-sector solutions to banking crises, in which strong institutions buy the weak, demand well-heeled banks. Just now, these are in short supply. Few institutions have been left unscathed by bad mortgage debts; JPMorgan Chase is a rare exception. When banks are threatened with insolvency, it is often the government—with the deepest pockets of all—that has to make go

Most Americans are still hesitant about banking with their cellphones and PDAs, but young people are increasingly accepting mobile banking, according to a survey.Serving the needs of tech-savvy customers will be crucial for banks to stay competitive as the collective income of baby boomers' children is expected to surge over the next 10 years and exceed that of their parents. So far, though most major banks offer mobile banking, 89% of consumers don't use their cellphones to conduct banking trans

    Offshore Banking in Costa Rica
    2008-04-18 10:30:00
The presence of offshore banks in Costa Rica has grown exponentially in recent years. Within the last three years, the total amount of funds these banks have attracted has increased by 65%. This includes money private citizens and businesses have placed in savings and checking accounts, long or short-term money market accounts, retirement plans, credit loans and other financial services. The amount of funds collected by Costa Rica’s offshore banks exceeded $2.245 million as of September of 2007. To get some perspective on this number, just imagine that it’s equivalent to 9% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). A reliable source defines GDP as “the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a given country in a given period of time (usually a calendar year).” A bank is termed ‘offshore’ when its official business address is located outside of Costa Rica. Typically, these banks are structured this way to take advantage of tax breaks and/or

VeCommerce announces voice biometrics system for online banking
    2008-04-18 10:27:00
eCommerce's voice biometrics authenticates an individual's identity through the unique properties of his or her voice. A voice profile can be used to authenticate both telephone and online transactions without any Pins or passwords.Brett Feldon, general manager at VeCommerce for the EMEA region, said: "Over a quarter of the UK population now regularly uses online banking but at the same time fraud continues to increase and criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their attacks."Card readers deployed by financial institutions to address the online fraud menace have certain drawbacks, as they are expensive both to produce and support with the continual loss of passwords and the actual readers. "They also do not work 'out of band' and are vulnerable to 'man in the middle' attacks," Feldon said.

US banking sector and worries about US economy put Dollar under pressure
    2008-04-15 08:51:51
A surprise first-quarter loss at Wachovia Corp, the fourth-largest US bank, suggested more credit market turmoil ahead, prompting traders to sell Dollars, mostly against the Euro and Sterling. That helped wipe out Dollar gains seen after finance officials from the G7 developed countries on Friday expressed concern about sharp currency fluctuations. In addition to Wachovia, Merrill Lynch & Co Inc and Citigroup Inc are due to report first-quarter results later in the week, and analysts say both banks may announce billions of dollars in write-downs. The Fed has cut the benchmark interest rate by 300 basis points at 2.25% since credit turmoil began in late August and is likely to reduce it again when it meets later this month. The European Central Bank, meanwhile, has held rates at 4% for more than a year, and ECB Governing Council member Yves Mersch said Monday there is no room for rate cuts this year.News and Events:The Dollar was little changed on Monday as more banking sector stres

Online Banking: Is Security Up to You?
    2008-04-08 19:19:00
Malware protection out of date? Then don't blame us if your online bank account gets hacked. That was the message sent out by the UK banking industry when the British Bankers' Association (BBA) updated its Banking Code and Business Banking Code last Monday, according to a Friday article on The Register. The Codes--essentially user agreements that all participating BBA banks use (you can read them here and here)--warn online banking customers that they might be responsible for their own losses if they "act without reasonable care," citing two sections as examples. One of those sections reads: "Keep your PC secure. Use up-to-date antivirus and spyware software and a personal firewall." It should be noted that the clause existed in the code in previous editions; The Register was merely noting that, even with the Codes' revisions, it's still there. Of course, it's wishful thinking that anyone actually reads their banking agreements that far without going into legalese-induced shock. (Whe

Cord Blood Banking: Should You Bank Your Baby's Cord Blood?
    2008-03-30 00:44:00
Cord blood banking is a relatively new concept. It is only in the last ten years that parents have seriously begun to bank their baby's cord blood. While the practice of banking cord blood is still not common it is becoming more popular as people begin to learn about its benefits. Cord blood is the blood that remains in umbilical cord after a live birth. Currently the umbilical cord along with the placenta and associated blood are all discarded after birth. Cord blood stem cells have more extensive uses than bone marrow stem cells and do not face the controversy that is associated with embryonic stem cell research. Cord blood stem cells can develop into various types of cells such as muscle, nerve or blood cells. Since these cells can regenerate immune system and repair damaged cells, they have the potential to treat heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease. Cord blood may indeed be the way of the future. Current

Small banks are finding a way to stay ahead with online banking.
    2008-03-16 03:51:00
As the numbers of online users increase so do consumer requirements. In fact, according to CashEdge's second annual Consumer Online Banking Survey, which was released late last year, 85 percent of respondents would never bank with an institution that didn't offer online banking. Now, smaller community banks are finding that their online banking services are a way to keep customers."With all the new technology and our busier lifestyles as consumers, banks have to rely on technology to stay connected with their customers," said Chuck Carr, product line manager for Checkfree.com, a provider of financial electronic commerce services and products. While smaller community banks are unable to compete with large institutions in terms of geographic convenience, in a virtual world a smaller bank is just as viable as a larger one.
