Inflation to touch 17 pc by September: Barclays
    2008-07-13 07:14:00
Global investment banker Barclays Capital has projected that inflation may surge to 17 per cent by September on back of another round of hike in fuel prices in the same month."We believe WPI inflation will remain in double-digit territory until May 2009. We expect WPI inflation of 17 per cent by September 2008," the report said. For the week-ended June 28, wholesale prices-based inflation touched a new 13-year high of 11.89 per cent much higher than the Reserve Bank's tolerance limit of 5.5 per cent for the current fiscal.According to the report, the government is likely to hike fuel prices between 10 and 20 per cent again as early as September to limit fiscal risks.Rise in the price of the Indian crude oil basket to USD 145-150 per barrel from the current USD 132 per barrel could be the trigger for another round of increase in fuel prices, it said. The government last revised retail petroleum prices with effect from June 5, when petrol prices was increased by Rs 5 a litre, diesel by Rs

Barclays launches online banking security drive
    2008-07-04 13:32:00
Barclays' two million UK online banking customers are to be offered free security software, the firm has announced.Anti-adware, spyware and viruses shields are to be given to the users for free, following concerns about online accounts being subject to fraud. It is thought that the cost of the bank's move could run to £200 million over two years. However, the importance of security to the online banking sector is thought to be enough to justify this expense: a survey from Abbey last month found that the time users spent on banks' websites exceeds that of MySpace and Facebook combined.Commenting, Sean Gilchrist at Barclays said: "For the last two years we have offered customers free antivirus software but, as internet fraudsters become more sophisticated, it is important that customers protect their computers from all threats and not just viruses."The anti-fraud devices are to be provided by tech firm Kaspersky.

Citigroup warns of Barclays rights issue deficit
    2008-06-28 22:58:00
By Philip AldrickLast Updated: 12:01am BST 28/06/2008Barclays' £4.5bn fundraising falls about £9bn short of what is necessary to absorb credit-related writedowns and bring the bank's capital in line with European peers, Citigroup claims in a note to clients. The British bank's shares came in for more heavy selling following the note, dropping to 289½p at one stage yesterday before ending the day down 5¾ at 298p.Citi analysts said that simply moving Barclays' core tier one capital in line with its closest peer, Royal Bank of Scotland, would require an extra £2.5bn. If Barclays was to write down its credit-related positions to the same degree as RBS the figure "increases to circa £9bn".Barclays has taken just £1.7bn of writedowns this year, compared with £5.9bn at RBS, leading some to believe that it has not been sufficiently prudent in its assumptions. The bank thought it had allayed some concerns this week by securing backing from several existing shareholders as well as new ones

Barclays warns of a financial storm as Federal Reserve's credibility crumbles
    2008-06-27 00:56:00
US central bank accused of unleashing an inflation shock that will rock financial markets, reports Ambrose Evans-PritchardBarclays Capital has advised clients to batten down the hatches for a worldwide financial storm, warning that the US Federal Reserve has allowed the inflation genie out of the bottle and let its credibility fall "below zero"."We're in a nasty environment," said Tim Bond, the bank's chief equity strategist. "There is an inflation shock underway. This is going to be very negative for financial assets. We are going into tortoise mood and are retreating into our shell. Investors will do well if they can preserve their wealth."Barclays Capital said in its closely-watched Global Outlook that US headline inflation would hit 5.5pc by August and the Fed will have to raise interest rates six times by the end of next year to prevent a wage-spiral. If it hesitates, the bond markets will take matters into their own hands. "This is the first test for central banks in 30 years and

S'pore to be 'City of Millionaires': Barclays survey
    2008-05-07 11:59:00
SINGAPORE will have the highest concentration of wealthy households in the world within a decade as economic expansion and the growth of its financial services industry draw investors, said Barclays Plc. Almost 41 per cent, or 436,000, of Singapore's households will have assets of at least $1 million by 2017, compared with 39 per cent in Hong Kong and 28 per cent in Switzerland, according to a survey by Barclays Wealth, the bank's wealth management unit. Singapore was second in 2007 with 23 per cent, while Hong Kong had 26 per cent, the report said. Singapore's US$132 billion economy grew last quarter at the fastest pace since 2003 as tax breaks and efforts to draw banks and manufacturers to expand or set up new businesses in the city offset slowing demand for electronics. Growth is expected to moderate this year because of a US slowdown, Bloomberg news reported on Wednesday. 'It's a little premature to assume that growth will continue in a straight line,

Depósito Barclays 7% a tres meses
    2008-04-12 13:09:00

Steve Stricker has won the 1st FedEx Cup event The Barclays in an amazing finish. It was a welcome tournament win after wasting four prime chances to win on the tour this year. The top 10 at the Barclays were: 1 Steve Stricker USA -16 268 67 67 65 69 F 2 K.J. Woolwich changes into Barclays: the “improvements”
    2007-05-17 15:30:26
Barclays Bank bought the Woolwich Building Society around seven years ago but really did very little to integrate the two outfits until now. In fact, the only visible changes to date is that the Woolwich stopped issuing credit cards under its own name and various documents started having “a trading name of Barclays Bank” or words to that effect added to them. The original reason put forward for their purchase was to acquire the technology that Woolwich used to implement its excellent Open Plan account, an account that let you offset any savings that you have against your mortgage. Not really a great move on the whole as the Woolwich technology was extremely primitive even then and, though operational, did silly things like charge you interest when you wrote a cheque against money that you actually had in a linked savings account and then refunding that the following month. In due course, Barclays ran up a version for themselves and improved the offering from the Woolwich. H
