| Roll Out The Barrels on Monday June 30th! | | 2008-06-13 11:18:00 | | We've finally gotten the new walk-in finished, the system is dialed in, and we've got 16 glistening new Perlick taps just waiting to dispense some delicious beer. If you read the previous post you may recall that I said 12 taps, and maybe you're wondering where the four extra taps came from. It's simple; taps 1-12 will be filled with interesting, eclectic, rotating beers all year, and the other 4 are set aside for future growth and special events like the one you're reading about.Anyway, enough jibba jabba; here's the details:Join us Monday June 30th as we celebrate the Grand Opening (grand tapping?) of our new draught system. We'll have at least 5 oak or barrel aged beers on tap and perhaps some other surprises too! The event kicks off at 5pm, and the kegs will run until they're gone. The Beers:Ft. George Bourbon-aged Cavatica Stout: This was the centerpiece of Ft. George's Stout Month back in February, and we're happy we squirreled away a keg. It's rich, full bodied, and leave... | | By: Belmont Station Beer Forum | | |
| | Gutters and Rain Barrels | | 2008-04-29 20:30:00 | | It has been pouring rain here for two days and it reminded me about how many homes I see around here with significant water damage. One of my biggest recommendations to clients when they build a new home is to invest in good gutters. The conversation typically turns to the home owner telling me that having gutters in New England is a bad idea because of the snow and ice. I'll leave that arguement / disagreement for another post but I will say that I use them and I never have trouble with ice and snow. The reason that I strongly recommend gutters is simple. An average 1,000 sq. ft. roof will produce over 600 gallons of water from 1 inch of rain! So without gutters you now have 600 gallons of water splashing against your house after it hits the ground and soaking into the ground along your foundation. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out all the problems that can arise from all this water hitting your house and sitting around your foundation. The first solution is to ins... | | By: Helpful Advice for Home Construction Improvement | | |
| | A bit more about rain barrels | | 2008-04-04 20:29:46 | | A couple of people have asked me how you go about making your own rain barrel. As you might expect, the web is full of information. I dug around for a few sites to recommend. The Chesapeake Bay Trust has one of the best brochures-- step-by-step including a supply list and cost estimates, though the listed prices seem high compared to some other sites.Over at YouTube, two videos put pictures to the words, a white-collar version by HGTV and a blue-collar version by rstidyman. | Rain barrels make a comeback | | 2008-03-27 19:29:43 | | Springfield, Massachusetts is blessed with some of the purest and best-tasting water in the country, thanks to the state's largest uncontrolled river, the West Branch Westfield. This river fills the 1,135 acre Cobble Mountain Reservoir in Russell and Blandford; the reservoir then goes on to provide 37 million gallons of water a day to Springfield, Agawam, East Longmeadow, Longmeadow and Ludlow.Rich in lakes and rivers, no place in New England is more than 400 miles from the ocean, With water so ubiquitous, New Englanders rarely give much thought to its availability..Yet the region experienced a moderately severe drought in 2002 and has had periods of abnormally dry or moderate drought conditions every year since then. Last August was the second driest in 122 years, according to Drought Monitor. One old water conservation idea that seems to be becoming new again is the rain barrel. The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection has partnered with SkyJuice New England to provide ra... | | By: Michaelann Land | | |
| | Wine flavor can depend on barrels | | 2008-03-05 16:28:00 | | The main purpose of the wine barrel is to add the vanilla and oak flavors that many consumers enjoy.French oak is widely accepted as the best barrel to use in winemaking because of its long history with the process, the quality of the oak used and the techniques utilized by the French coopers in constructing the barrels. French oak barrels are popular because they are known to provide the most flavors.Unfortunately French wine barrels are becoming very expensive. Taransaud, a noted barrel producer, is offering their best barrel for more than $1,400. Most French barrels are in the $800 price range. American barrels are half that cost. The typical barrel holds only 59 gallons or 25 cases of wine. Now you know why red wine costs more than most whites.

| | Furnishings made from wine barrels | | 2007-05-19 14:00:30 | | It is rare these days to even find old wine and beers barrels as new methods of manufacture have come into existence.
So when a range of furniture and other furnishings made from old wine barrels comes along, it is quite refreshing. The products on offer at the moment are a wine barrel bread basket, bench and stave chairs, all with the well used wood that has come from the old wine barrels, you can just imagine the colors and textures of the old wood.
The benches cost $219 or $369 for two, Bread Bowl $95 and Stave Chairs $149 or $269 for two. Unfortunately they can only deliver to mainland USA addresses and it will cost $10 per item.
