    Basement Flooring Options
    2008-07-16 10:11:25
Another reader question was my opinion on the best flooring options for basements. I'm not a flooring expert but I've seen my share of flooring options used for basements so heres my take on the topic.Basements present some flooring challenges that are unique with respect to home construction. Whether your basement is fairly new or old the issues remain the same. Concrete basements by nature are a very damp environment. Concrete typically has a moisture content of between 2% and 8%. Moisture contents like that can really cause problems to flooring systems. You should test your concrete slabs moisture content before you start your flooring project. Most manufacturers require moisture contents below 4% to 5%.The other big issue with basements is flooding. Many homes are threatened by the occasional spring flooding of basements. If your basement has a history of flooding it's really best to solve that problem before spending money on remodeling your basement. There really are very few opt

Basement Lighting - Recessed Vs Surface Mounted
    2008-07-15 19:33:40
Last week one of my readers asked a question: Which is better? Recessed lights or surface mount ceiling lights for basement lighting? For starters basements typically have a lower ceiling height than the main floors. Most modern construction today results in the ceiling joists (1st floor joists) being 7'-6" above the concrete slab in the basement. So the first consideration will be head room if you install surface mount lights. The following is my list of issues to consider when choosing between recessed and surface mount lights in your basement:Cost - Most projects end up being governed by your budget so it's important to talk about the cost comparison between recessed lights and surface mounted lights. For talking purposes let's assume you're finishing a 10' x 10' basement room. In this example you could install one surface mounted light fixture or a minimum of four recessed lights (I think you'd probably want five or six to make it really bright). With this example it's very easy to

The Thing In The Basement: Conclusion.
    2008-06-19 09:20:00
And as I died, I felt something pulling, tugging, dragging at me. I actually felt my soul leave my body. I always thought that would be peaceful, although in this case I didn't expect that too much because I had killed my wife and daughter and was going to Hell, but the Thing had not gotten me, at least.I was sucked out of my body, out of the car, through the house, like a handkerchief through a magician's hand.Into the basement. I was thrown, sucked, tossed into the basement, with all those spirits.I landed in the middle, with those other souls lurching and tumbling around me. People who'd hung themselves in the house with ropes still around their neck in the afterworld. One guy who'd slit his wrists, pale and limp and dragging himself by his elbows with his hands flapping uselessly. All milling around and looking at me, some with a little more vitality than others.I looked around and around, bewildered. We all do, when we first get here. It took me a few moments to realize, and I did

The Thing In The Basement (16)
    2008-06-16 11:08:00
I saw Melissa, too. I saw the Thing going after her. It held her down and clawed and chewed at her face, shredding and tearing her skin off of her a little at a time.I looked around the room for the Thing as I opened the door. Melissa was only half-turned towards me. Angie had her head buried in Melissa's shoulder. I knew I wouldn't be able to see the Thing, but I thought I might see signs of it, where it was standing, or something. I darted my eyes around and took another step into the room.Angie opened her eyes and saw me. She screamed and wouldn't stop screaming. At that, I heard the rush of blood from the hallway, and felt a wet, cold wash on my feet. I heard Angie screaming and looked around wildly."Where is it?" I yelled. Melissa turned around. I yelled again. "Tell me where it is! Where do you see it?" Melissa yelled something like "see what" but all the things in the room were talking and Angie was screaming and there was the river of blood and my heartbeat and a cackling. I di

    2008-06-16 09:13:00
"What?" she asked. Maybe she could see it in my eyes. She could see something, because she was quiet and stared at me. In the small sliver of moonlight that made it through our skylight I saw her eyes. She licked her lips, nervously."Since we moved in here," I began.I couldn't talk. I felt the air suck out of my lungs. I felt my eyes water. I felt the pressure change in my head, like when you dive underwater and go too far down before leveling off. I couldn't even think for a second. I saw spots."What is it, Jude?" She looked scared. I shook my head."I'm okay," I said. "I just need to tell..." and it stopped. Again, the air was sucked from me and my vision went temporarily black.I heard a laugh. A cackle."Jude," she said, more urgently. "What's going on?""Nothing," I said. I noticed I could talk about anything but what I wanted to talk about. "I guess I just couldn't sleep," I said, and looked around the room. There was still a low snicker from David's room as I heard the sound of Davi

The Thing In The Basement (Thirteen)
    2008-06-13 10:52:00
I knew this was the cause of the troubles. I'd finally seen IT. I leaped at it, snarling deep down in my throat. Deep down inside all of us is still that primal human, the one that first learned that a sharp rock could kill another one of us and learned that by doing it and that part of me leaped at the Thing! I attacked it!And it turned as I did that, and threw itself at me and the force of it knocked me down on the ground and as it touched me I felt a shrieking pulsing wail inside my head, not so much heard it as felt it in every cell in my brain, and I fell back, and the Thing looked its red eyes into mine and it bared its teeth, rows and rows of tiny razor-spikes, and I felt its claws on my chest, and it ripped its teeth into my throat and pulled out my aorta and half of my tongue. I felt the blood gurgle up through the hold in my chin and neck and felt my heart beat just once before it gave up.I saw the Thing jump back on David's back and go out the door.I laid there. I was not de

The Thing In The Basement (Twelve).
    2008-06-11 10:07:00
David wandered away more than just that one time. Each time he came back. He was never comfortable living there. He had a haunted look about him. He had bags under his eyes and a reddish tint to them that came from never having a good night's sleep. He would sneak out over and over, at 7 and 8 and 12. And he always came back by hook or by crook. Never willingly. We should have had social workers involved by that time, but they never were. How many times can the police bring a kid back, or a concerned neighbor, before someone gets involved? That was probably more of the Thing In The Basement's doing.I was thinking of that because David left that night, and the dice told me he would. When he scooped them up to put them into the box at the end of the night, one said "He'll escape." The other said "Yeah, he'll get out tonight but not for long." The first said "No, I meant in the long run." The second said "Oh. Right." The first one said "Not like the little girl. What a way to go."And I tho

You're not getting tired of listening to me, are you?Like you could do anything about it.I'd like to tell you it wasn't all bad, during those years. I'd like to tell you that there were plenty of nights that Angie and David sat with Melissa and me and watched TV, or played Monopoly, or just listened to music or ate a nice dinner. We must have, right?I can't think of them right now, though. I can't remember those nights. The nights that stick in my memory, the things I can remember, seem to be dictated. The Things I can remember are dictated by the Thing In The Basement. Ha. That's rich, right? But they are.Is she looking at me?Never mind.I do remember the night that things started talking to me. I remember that night, which started out normally enough. We were, in fact, playing Monopoly. Melissa and David and I were playing. Angie was not old enough to play, so she and Melissa were on a team.Like now, you might say.I don't remember if I was winning or losing. There's an apt look at how t

It wasn't until after Angie began preschool that things got bad.Imagine that.Imagine how bad things would get. Up until then, all I'd had happen to me were visions of blood around the house. Suicidal and homicidal thoughts. Crushing depression. Threats spelled out on the walls of the house. And a horrific murder that happened in front of my eyes.I don't know when I began to think of it as The Thing In The Basement. Maybe it was when things began to talk to me.Not just the walls spelling, but the things around me talking to me.Remember Son of Sam saying the mailman's dog talked to him? Or whatever it was he said? I don't think he had it as bad.Just so you know I'm not crazy, I'm going to tell you a little bit about that, and a little bit about what I saw in the basement.Things were getting out of hand for me by the time I went in the basement. It was before David had the screaming fits that began the night he walked away, the night I tasted the blood, although those concerned me.Melissa

You're probably wondering about the basement itself, by now. Why haven't I mentioned that?Because the blood comes first. I'd actually gone into the basement. But I had to tell you about the blood first. The last time I saw the blood was late at night. I'd jerked awake and couldn't get back to sleep. My heart was racing. I laid there and tried to remember my dream. Why was I so excited, upset? I couldn't think of anything in particular, and that should tell you just how bad things were that I didn't think that visions of death and destruction, thoughts of suicide, pools of blood, were anything in particular to get excited about. I'd seen the basement, of course, by that time.I looked over at Melissa, who was sleeping peacefully. She had never given any sign of noticing anything about the house, and neither had David. They both loved it. They did not have the signs of gray hair I had, the heartburn, the insomnia, the worries. Melissa was happier than ever. She talked about putting David i

Blood. That was what it looked like. After a while, the feelings I would get upon coming home weren't remarkable anymore. And the horror of the accident had faded.David was three when I saw the blood.David was four, and Angie was one, when I no longer noticed the blood because of the birds. But first the blood. It looked like blood. It smelt like blood. It coagulated and crusted up and scabbed like blood.God help me. I can't think of this next part without saying that. God help me, it tasted like blood. What would Melissa have said if she'd seen me? I'd been seeing the blood for a few weeks. Maybe months. I don't know. Time runs together now and it ran together then. I'd first seen the blood trickling down a hallway. A little stream of blood, right down the center of our upstairs hallway, not more than a quarter inch wide. It had reached the end of the hallway and the first step, and was just about to form a full-fledged drop. I saw the drop forming at the end of the stream as I came upstair

Oh, the things we trade. The things we trade away.Like a little kid, trading away a Hank Aaron rookie card for someone else because he doesn't like Hank Aaron as much as that other player who doesn't even stick in his memory anymore, never knowing that the Hank Aaron rookie card would have allowed him to live a life of leisure.Okay, that's not my memory. That one was actually my uncle's. That's the only appearance he'll make in this story, though. My family was not one of the things I traded away for anything. They were just not a big part of my life anymore.Or maybe I did trade them away, because I did move away from them. And I enjoyed where I lived. Days like that one day, about two months after David was born. I was driving to work. I'd begun heading into the office a little more in those days, in part because I was busier, in part because I was trying to avoid the house, and what I'd come to think of as The Thing (I didn't really know where it was at that point. Remember, we didn't

Later on, while I'm lying in my car, before I get sucked back in, before I go back in, when I'm nearly nearly dead but not quite so, just nearly so, but after Melissa was already dead (and she got away, I think but I'm not sure) I heard a song.It was The Good Times Are Killing Me by a group called Modest Mouse. It was on the CD player in the car in the garage. Melissa must have left it in there. She always liked music like that.I was lying there, slowly falling asleep, and listening to the lyrics and thinking "How true."But I didn't die for a while. For a long while, as it turns out.I've ended the suspense, right? You know I die. I told you that in the beginning. Melissa dies, too. Don't worry about that. And Angie dies. You don't know Angie yet. Angie was our baby girl, our daughter. She dies, too, but you'll probably get to know her. If I tell you about her.David didn't die. "What?" I said. Melissa turned to me and said "What?" I looked at her. "Did you hear what she said about the basement?""What about it," Melissa asked."What do you think?" The realtor said. "Shall I give you a minute?"I looked at Melissa and said "Yes, give us a minute.""We'll take it," said Melissa. She looked at me.Look, I married her, all right? She wanted it. I'm not going to argue. "We'll write up a bid," I told the realtor. I figured that would do it; we'd never get it.I watched for a minute as the realtor sat at the small folding table with Melissa writing on the offer to purchase. They filled in numbers and dates and Melissa signed it. I signed it, and as the realtor began folding it up, my cellphone rang."Hello?""Jude?""Yeah. What's up, John?" John is the publisher of our local papers."Tina resigned.""What?" Tina was my boss, the editor-in-chief."Yep. She just now marched into my office and said she was quitting. Two: We don't talk about the basement.
    2008-05-30 15:51:00
It wasn't always like that. At first, we didn't even know about the Thing In the Basement. When we first found the house, I couldn't believe it. Melissa and I had been looking for a house for almost a year. I didn't make very much money, and we had even less once she became pregnant. I spent all of my time worrying about it. All of the time I didn't spend at my job as a copy editor of a series of local papers. Which was becoming more and more, because (I told myself) we needed the money and because (I told Melissa) they needed me at the office, since I didn't want her to feel like she was the cause of the problem. She wasn't.I would sit, sometimes, at my office, late at night, proofreading a story about a town board meeting, and wonder whether I should even go home. I'd wonder, sometimes, whether I couldn't just go drive the car into the lake. Then I'd shake it off, go home, we'd eat dinner, and go house hunting. So when we pulled up at what would become our house (it's not like it's ruin

Yep, it's the New York Yankees, who find themselves in last place today after losing to the first-place Tampa Bay Rays, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at the Trop. But wow, the first-place Rays? They are one game in front of the Red Sox as I write this, as they beat up on Ian (Where Do You Want It?) Kennedy once again.I know, I know. It's May 16th, and there's still about 120 games left in the season. But how I do enjoy writing "New York Yankees" and "last place" in the same sentence.

    Choosing Remodeled Basement Wall Products
    2008-05-09 01:20:39
As housing costs slump and more and more people are finishing their basements instead of selling their homes, companies are designing their own basement remodeling wall panels. Unfortunately, many of these companies have products that have been hastily produced, poorly researched, or make misleading claims to the effectiveness of their final product. Before you make a final decision on which basement finishing products you want, ask yourself these five questions:1. Is this basement wall product water resistant? A basement water leak at some point isn't a matter of how, it's a matter of when. With all the pipes, sinks, and toilets in the house along with the water heater, washing machine, and water storage tank, something is definitely going to leak. Additionally, rain and ground water can leak through foundation wall cracks in the basement walls or floor as well as through the foundation wall-floor joint.2. Will my basement wall product resist mold? Even when your basement is not leaki

    What’s in your wallet, basement,garage?
    2008-04-28 12:50:00
An article in Wired magazine entitled “Waste Management” hit too close to home the other day. A daughter was writing about the enormous collection of computers and related paraphernalia that her father collected. She and her brothers had to help him divest himself of the collection when his building was sold and he had to move. Sadly I see my self in this tawdry little tale. Admittedly I have little or not use for a multi node network at home. I was able to reluctantly get rid of my 25ppm, multi-tray, networked Lexmark laser. Like I really print that much. I am attempting to divest my self of other workable items. Craig’s List and Free Cycle have helped there. My hobby of recycling Pentium 3’s for the computer less is floundering at the moment due to a lack of operating systems. Thus my garage does look like a recycling center. Growing up in a home where you fixed things, you didn’t trash them, makes it difficult to junk workable stuff. I guess this should be titled the confe

    Basement Finishing Ideas Basement Tips
    2008-04-23 14:35:31
There is no doubt that finishing a basement can be so beneficial in many different ways. From increasing the value of your home to giving your family more living area, basements are a great home improvement project. For many homeowners they simply need some good basement finishing ideas to get them started thinking of a good design for their particular needs. With that said, here are 3 good tips for a basement idea.1. Storage/Laundry Area - This basement idea is a common one in many family homes. Taking the laundry from the main level of your home and putting it in the basement will free up some extra room upstairs. You can also better utilize the laundry room downstairs with the addition of a table for folding clothes, cabinets or storage shelves for laundry items, a TV for viewing while folding clothes, etc. Having more room for storage is also a good idea. Instead of having items stuffed into the garage or attic, you can build a room for storage. Does a home ever have enough storage

    Remedies for a Wet Basement
    2008-04-01 22:27:00
A wet basement can be just a nuisance or even real nightmare. Each year, thousands of homeowners are faced with the unpleasant side effects of seasonal rainfall. Problems they can face range from just dampness to even flooding. Chronic basement leakage is a serious problem that can destroy personal property, furnishings, appliances, and sometimes even cause permanent structural damage to a homes foundation. Excessive moisture is a huge attraction to wood-eating insects, wood rot and decay.Despite the pervasiveness of the problem, few homeowners are aware of the causes of water leakage.Common CausesOne common cause of basement leakage is improper surface drainage, such as a yard sloped toward the home. In many cases, the problem can be greatly alleviated by re-grading the yard to slope away from the homes foundation or diverting surface water around the house.Other common culprits include poorly positioned rain gutter downspouts, missing, leaking or clogged rain gutters. A downspout tha

    Basement Storage Room Is Finished
    2008-02-24 18:24:00
Today I finished our new storage room in the basement. This storage room was needed badly so we could organize all of our stuff that has been piling up in the basement. Two of the walls have these 24 inch deep shelves spaced approximately 30 inches apart.I still plan on building a large book case in this room to store all my wifes old teaching supplies and my engineering books. I'll do a series of posts on how to build a set of book shelves. If you're interested in learning more about insulating basement walls check out my previous posts, Finished Basement Insulation - Step 1, Basement Insulation and Framing Update, and Basement Storage Room.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, basement storage room

    Basement Insulation and Framing Update
    2008-02-12 18:38:00
I've started insulating the basement walls in the new storage room. I'm attaching 1" extruded polystyrene foam insulation board by DOW. I used a special Styrofoam adhesive to adhere the foam board to the concrete. The foam board I am using comes with a tongue and grove so installation is pretty easy. Just cut the boards to length, apply some adhesive and press it against the wall. After I installed all of the polystyrene foam insulation I sealed all of the joints with Tyvek tape. Tyvek tape is a really strong tape that will stay adhered to the foam board and it keeps out moisture. Concrete holds a tremendous amount of moisture so creating a moisture barrier is essential.Once all the insulation was in place I started framing up 2x4 walls. I'm going to place the walls directly in front of the foam insulation and then insulate the wall cavities with fiberglass insulation. By doing the combination I can achieve approximately a R values of 16.After I finish framing and insulating the walls I

Finished Basement - Step 1 Insulation

I'm preparing to "finish" one of the rooms in the basement. The room is actually going to be a storage room so I use the term "finish" with a grain of salt. I plan on building some shelves to store some of our "junk" that has accumulated in the portion of the basement that will one day become a family room. The storage room will be approximately 12'x14' and it's in the front corner of the house that has full 8' high concrete walls. Before I build any shelves I want to build two walls in front of the concrete walls and insulate them.Insulating the concrete walls will drastically improve the overall energy efficiency of the house. In my opinion the best way to insulate a foundation wall is the following:1. Apply an extruded polystyrene foam insulation board (I happen to use "blue board" that DOW makes) to the concrete wall. You can apply the foam insulation board to the wall using a couple of methods; using an adhesive or shooting 1x3 strapping into the concrete wall to hold the insulati

Harry & The Potters @ Rock City (Basement)
    2007-05-22 17:27:00
Now i'm guessing you're thinking "Harry & The Potters...they're just a novelty band" and i'd agree with you. The novelty comes from them not only dressing up as Mr Potter and singing songs about the stories from the biggest franchise this side of Starbucks but they actually both perform as Harry too, one from the fourth year and one from the 7th year. At times it all seems a bit tongue-in-cheek but the detail and energy that went into their performance was extremely endearing, to the point where i probably cared more about those two Harrys than i ever could about Daniel Radcliffe's portrayal. Backed by "Bill Weasley" on drums, the two Potters, one on guitar, one on keyboard, ripped through a set of hugely entertaining numbers about saving Hogwarts, magical books and wizard chess with enthusiasm and boundless energy. It probably helps that i'm a fan of the books, as there's alot of in-jokes and details from the series in the lyrics that might not be as amusing to a non-Potter rea

Chapter 9: What The Thing In The Basement Does
    2006-04-30 19:47:00
It couldn't go on long after that. I knew, you know, everyone knows.I could go on a long time. I could go on forever. I could give you detail upon detail upon detail.I've got nothing but time. But, then, you know that, don't you? You're a good listener. I guess you've got the time, too.But there couldn't be much after that. After that night that I saw the Thing I never saw it again. I never saw the blood, either. I never saw the bricks moving again.I could still hear things. I just couldn't see things. Whatever it had done to my eye, I couldn't see the things I used to.And I couldn't talk about anything, really, but the most innocuous things. I know because I tried. The night before, I tried. The night before what? The night before I killed myself.I was lying in bed, lying awake. I could hear the things rustling around me. I could hear the flowing sound of blood like a river outside my bedroom. I guess I was grateful that I couldn't see them. But I could hear and I didn't like wh

You Can't Walk Away From The Thing In The Basement

I saw the drop forming at the end of the stream as I came u
