| | Challenges Await in Investigating Benazir Bhutto's Death | | 2008-01-06 11:45:11 | | Pakistan has decided to allow Scotland Yard to investigate Benazir Bhutto's assassination. This is a good political move given the massive suspicion on the country's streets that Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf was behind her death -- suspicions that Musharraf has fueled through his government's incompetent handling of the aftermath of Bhutto's killing. It seems that Western behind-the-scenes pressure played a role in the invitation that Musharraf extended to Scotland Yard. An Agence France-Presse...(read more) | | By: An American Warning | | |
| | Too much power kills (literally)- The death of Benazir Bhutto, now and beyond | | 2007-12-29 22:14:35 | | On 27th Dec 2007, Benazir Bhutto, ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan was assassinated in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, where she was addressing a political rally. She served as the country's Prime Minister from 1988 to 1990, and from 1993 to 1996, and returned to Pakistan in Oct 2007 after a period of exile. Her death comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, as the political emergency period was recently lifted, and elections are scheduled in Jan 2008.Bloggers all over the world have expressed shock and concern, even as many of them disagree with her politics. Her death is seen as the latest in the series of attacks on civilians and as reflective of the larger issue of law and order in the country.Concerns have been expressed about the consequences of this tragedy both politically and immediately in terms of violence on the streets. Not to forget the personal loss beyond any measure, to the family of thirty innocent people killed in the bidding and the Bhutto's family. And what about the spate of attempts since her touchdown on Pakistani soil, which have consumed so many lives?Irrespective of nation, culture and class, we all have a tendency to idolize someone who has made the ultimate journey- death. I want to attract your attention to the corruption charges laid against her, not to specifics, but that simply because she is no more here to say her story, should not mean that we turn a blind eye to it all.Of course, it is an open secret that whether we trust the original claims, or the counter-claims or the counter-counter claims, may be a function of our own interests. But still, the author humbly recommends an objective assessment and not an emotional jerk. S. Arif Hussaini writes in 2003, By the time the army took over power in October, 1999, corruption had become the norm and honesty was but a joke. His 1973 constitution did away with the chapter on civil services that had guaranteed security of service to civil servants. That chapter had formed part of all previous constitut | | By: Gopal's Blog | | |

| | Remembering Benazir Bhutto | | 2007-12-29 08:48:31 | | If not with my History class, Asian Civilization, in college I would not have known this powerful woman, Benazir Bhutto, and she may well raise her brow (of her soul) if I had not remembered anything about her when I was in high school, but only in college.
During our discussions in my last year at college, which was just last year, I really admire her political prowess. There aren't too many

| | Benazir Bhutto Assassination: What Does It Mean For U.S.? | | 2007-12-28 10:42:00 | | Okay, now that some time (although not much) has passed since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, I believe enough information has been made available to tap out a few thoughts. In regards to an incident of this magnitude, perhaps it is in fact best to hold back the reigns a short while instead of trying to be "the first with the story."Much has been said of Bhutto's position in the Pakistani world of politics, and that is from BOTH sides of the coin. There are those that praised her, and those that despised her. Some family believed she had a hand in the assassination of her own younger brother, Benazir Bhutto. (See Article "A Niece Tells Us The Truth...".) It was also believed that there were some serious money scandals in the works. A conviction on laundering was under appeal in a Swiss court.Yet she did have western allies, as Bush was a supporter of her being re-instituted into the Pakistani government. There are those who would say that, "that doesn't speak well her." As well, there were many countries who leaped to the, "We condemn this action!" podium, but urged the country to move forward with the democratic process of the upcoming elections there. What followed after her death were speculations and conjecture aplenty. Did the bomb kill her? Did the bullets kill her? Was it the concussion of the explosion itself that killed her? Rioting and a few deaths ensued. I believe the approximate number is 23 deaths. And from most accounts, there was no shrapnel or bullets found in Bhutto's body. It has been determined, (for now) that the force of the explosion had thrown Bhutto back as she was ducking down through the sunroof. As she was thrown back, the back of her head struck the sunroof lever, quite forcibly I would imagine, and fractured her skull causing the fatal damage. Depending on which news agency you subscribe to, between 10's of thousands and 100's of thousands turned out for the funeral of Bhutto. Now to the really important stuff.
| | On Benazir Bhutto's Assassination | | 2007-12-27 08:30:19 | | The details are still emerging of this horrific event, but we can make some significant conclusions. How will this effect the PPP, Bhutto's political party? They no longer have a leader. There are leaders within the party who could take over (their names escape me), but I don't know if they have international democratic recognition. What about Nawaz Sharif, the other internationally recognized democracy activist and political candidate? This will certainly boost his popularity. Also, this is likely to fracture voters in Pakistan, who were mostly united behind Bhutto. Will this boost the chance of democracy? Bhutto's been martyred, and is likely, at least for the short term, to boost the calls for reform in PakistanThen again, one could look at this the opposite way. The attack could give President Musharraf an excuse to call for martial law.The other question to ask: Who carried out the assassination? Was it Islamists? Was it the Pakistani Intelligence Service? Was it one of her political rivals? Was it Musharraf? We can definitely say this: This will complicate the U.S.'s work in the Middle East.
