Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove."Not even the most wacked out environmentalist would suggest making farmers rest their land once every seven years. But can you say "overfarming"?Can you say "depletion of the topsoil"?Perhaps the God of the Bible knew what He was

The Debate Over The Apocrypha - Why Are There Extra Books In The "Catholic Bible" That Aren't In The Bible That Most Christians Read?
    2008-07-02 13:45:00
The Apocrypha ("hidden", "doubtful") most commonly refers to a group of disputed books which are rejected by Protestants and most other Christian groups and accepted by the Roman Catholic organization. So why are these books in the "Catholic Bible" and not in other Bibles? The folks over at inplainsite.org have done a very good job of explaining the issues behind this debate. The article linked to below will answer such questions as:-Did the Jews consider the Apocrypha part of the Old Testament?-What did Jesus think of the Apocrypha?-Does the New Testament refer to the Apocrypha?-Did the early church fathers believe the Apocrypha was authoritative?-What kinds of problems do we find with the Apocrypha? For those who are curious about this topic I would encourage you to go read the article:http://www.inplainsite.org/html/apocrypha.html

If you are interested in learning more about the Biblical prophecies that Jesus Christ fulfilled during His time here on earth I would encourage you to read this great article that I found entitled "Fulfilled Prophecy: Evidence for the Reliability of the Bible":http://www.reasons.org/resources/apologetics/prophecy.shtmlIt discusses many of the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled, and it goes into the incredible odds that one man could have fulfilled so many of the prophecies that the Bible says the Messiah would fulfill.Fulfilled prophecy is one of the things that sets Christianity apart from all of the other world religions. If you are seeking the truth, I would encourage you to search the articles on this website for even more evidence for the Christian faith.

God’s Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question–Why We Suffer

God's Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question--Why We Suffer (Hardcover)By Bart D. Ehrman Buy new: $25.95 $17.1349 used and new from $14.49 Product Description In times of questioning and despair, people often quote the Bible to provide answers. Surprisingly, though, the Bible does not have one answer but many "answers" that often contradict one another. Consider these competing explanations for suffering put forth by various biblical writers: The prophets: suffering is a punishment for sin The book of Job, which offers two different answers: suffering is a test, and you will be rewarded later for passing it; and suffering is beyond comprehension, since we are just human beings and God, after all, is God Ecclesiastes: suffering is the nature of things, so just accept it All apocalyptic texts in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament: God will eventually make right all that is wrong with the world For renowned Bible scholar Bart Ehrman, the quest

When Brain Research Meets The Bible
    2008-05-23 11:15:30
This is a continuing debate on "The Neural Buddhists".By Travis SchollIn Civil Religion That’s the subtext to The New York Times columnist David Brooks‘ recent piece on religion and science, “The Neural Buddhists.” He’s taking up recent developments in neuroscience, and coming to the conclusion that present and future debates between religion and science will not be over the existence of God, but over whether or not organized religion contributes to or harms the brain’s intuitions toward transcendence and spirituality. Thus, the title: science leading to a “neural Buddhism.”Or, as he says: “The real challenge is going to come from people who feel the existence of the sacred, but who think that particular religions are just cultural artifacts built on top of universal human traits.”In other words, it’s the standard line: “I’m spiritual but not religious.” Whatever that means. But, consider Brooks’ summary of recent literature in neuroscience:First, the self i

Louisiana buckles the Bible in favour of death!
    2008-04-16 11:05:24
The Parable of the Lost Sheep is seemingly lost on some folk in Louisiana. They'd rather the lost sheep be fried in oil than be let back into the fold. The Good Shepherd is more concerned for the lost sheep, but if you've just tightened your belt a couple of notches too much, the message might get blurred in the subsequent fainting fit. The State of Louisiana is seeking to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that death "is not cruel and unusual punishment for the rape of a child" and thus doesn't violate the 8th Amendment. This comes on the day that the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the lethal three-drug cocktail used in most U.S. executions during the past 30 years. No matter that the stuff takes a time to wend its way through the veins. I suppose these judges describe themselves as Christians. Do they say their prayers with petitions to God to bless this killing cocktail?I find it amazing that, when confronted with a crucifix and mention of such punishment, Americans get

    Bible Studies Class
    2008-04-16 07:23:09
Little April was not the best student in Sunday school. Usually she slept through the class. One day, during the Bible studies class, the teacher called on her while she was napping, "Tell me, April, who created the universe?" When April didn't stir, little Johnny, a boy seated in the chair behind her, took a pin and jabbed her in the rear. "GOD ALMIGHTY!" shouted April and the teacher said, "Very good" and April fell back asleep. A while later the teacher asked April, "Who is our Lord and Saviour," But, April didn't even stir from her slumber. Once again, Johnny came to the rescue and stuck her again. 'JESUS CHRIST!" shouted April and the teacher said, "very good," and April fell back to sleep. Then the teacher asked April a third question. "What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third child?" And again, Johnny jabbed her with the pin. This time April jumped up and shouted, "IF YOU STICK THAT F*****G THING IN ME ONE MORE TIME, I'LL BREAK IT IN HALF AND STICK IT UP YOUR ARS

Our Wonderful Provider! So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.Matthew 6:31-34 NIV__________________He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant. He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.Psalm 111:4-6 KJV__________________"You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied And praise the name of the LORD your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; Then My people will never be put to shame. Shooter's Bible - 99th Edition
    2007-12-27 17:05:43
Terry Sheely, The Reel News, September 2007Since 1924 more than 7 million copies of Shooter's Bible have been sold cementing the title as the world's standard firearms reference book. If you wanna know about a gun, look it up in Shooter's Bible. My gunsmithing, wildcatting, varmint popping, bullet pouring Uncle Floyd used to repeat that phrase like a Mantra. The first SB I read was dobbed with gun oil, bent pages, rips in the cover and a permanent position on the corner of my uncle's loading bench. When ever I pick up a copy of SB, I still get flashback visions of mountains of .38 Special wad-cutter bullets, coffee-cans of brass, and metal cans of assorted Hogdon and Herter gunpowders. Stoeger is now owned by Benelli which markets some of the finest firearms on the planet. To their credit, however, the Benelli folks have left intact the creditability factor that has made SB the uncompromised industry-wide reference book that it is. The 99th edition includes 200 full-color plates of new guns and products, and the usual up to date prices and specifications of thousands of firearms (handguns, rifles, shotguns, black powder) and shooting industry products. Where else can you find out that a Smith and Wesson Model 442 is a double-action revolver with rubber grips, 1.8 inch barrel, weighs an ounce under a pound, shoots .38 specials, chambers 5 rounds and retails new for $498? While firearm descriptions and info are the backbone of this bible, it also covers in detail spotting scopes, binoculars, bullets, factory ammo, powders, ballistics, sights, holsters and reloading equipment. If it involves shooting, SB has it covered somewhere in those 576 pages. I can't imagine a hunter, shooter, or collector who doesn't own a copy of SB. This year's 99th edition is, in my opinion, the 99th most indispensable reference book in a row. BUY NOW

A little boy opened the big family bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages."Mama, look what I found", the boy called out.""What have you got there, dear?"With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"

Foreign Chinese detractors have come out punching again! After the mildly popular Olympics Boycott movement sputtered into yesterday's news, out comes unfounded reports that catholic bibles are banned in China. It's just another futile attempt to stain not only China's reputation but the Olympics. Another controversy to stir up things before.

Tips for Reading the Bible as a Family
    2007-09-22 00:05:22
In honor of St. Matthew the Apostle's feast day, today's article will focus on the Bible. Sacred Scripture should be an important part of Christian family life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the "Church has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord's Body". Since liturgical life is made to point us towards the Eucharist, this should tell us how important Scripture is. I've assembled a few tips to help families engage in Sacred Scripture as much as possible: - Fathers or Mothers, go to Mass as often as possible and take whoever else can come along - Did you know that at Sunday Mass, four Scripture passages are read and at daily Mass three passages are read ? Many other prayers said during the Mass are also taken directly from the Bible. If you cannot get to a daily Mass, watch it on the television, if possible. - Read the Scripture passages for Mass before they are read aloud in Mass- this always helps them sink in better; you'll think about them for a greater part of the day. - Take turns reading a section of the Gospel at night before bed as a family - the Gospels are perfect for reading a short amount of material for everyone to ponder on as they end the day. I've found that the book of Proverbs works well for this too. - When praying before a meal, select a Psalm of thanksgiving to read aloud - this helps me and my family keep the blessing before the meal fresh and varied. This last bit of advice comes from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America: decide as a family where you want to read the Bible together. Consider a comfortable room or a special location set aside for this purpose. To help prepare yourself mentally, you might find it helpful to light a candle or sing a religious song before reading Sacred Scripture. Consider using a "family Bible" as well. I hope you find some of these tips helpful. God bless, Daniel

    Cell Phone VS. Bible
    2007-07-10 18:56:00
This was handed out at church last week. Really makes you think about what’s important!   Cell Phone VS. Bible   I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone. What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? What if we gave it to the kids as gifts? What if we used it in case of emergency? This is something to make you go “hmmm, where is my cell phone?” Oh, and one more thing, unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill, and no dropped calls. Makes you stop and think “where are my priorities?”

    Funniest Deaths In The Bible
    2007-04-24 15:21:20
    10. A King – 1 Kings 20:35-36 A man who was one of the prophets said to a bystander, "Hit me; wound me. Do it for GOD's sake--it's his command. Hit me; wound me." But the man wouldn't do it. So he told him, "Because you wouldn't obey GOD's orders, as soon as you leave me a lion will attack you." No sooner had the man left his side than a lion met him and attacked. 9. King Herod - Acts 12:21-23 On the day set for their meeting, Herod, robed in pomposity, took his place on the throne and regaled them with a lot of hot air. The people played their part to the hilt and shouted flatteries: "The voice of God! The voice of God!" That was the last straw. God had had enough of Herod's arrogance and sent an angel to strike him down. Herod had given God no credit for anything. Down he went. He was eaten by worms, and then he died. 8. His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat. By now people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit and, when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this ch
