Big Dreams in a Small Town
    2008-05-28 13:12:00
When I was in High School I had big dreams. I imagined myself one day being a very successful career woman in a loft apartment in a large city. I also imagined I would be married and have 2 kids.So I headed off to college, newly married to my high school sweetheart, with these ideas rolling around in my head. And then during my second year we decided we wanted to have kids quickly. Becca was born during the semester break in 1995. And all of my dreams suddenly took on a new twist. Working and becoming that famous career woman suddenly didn't sound appealing at all. We both decided that daycare was not for us or our kids and I would stay home after college. So we juggled our classes so one of us was always home with Becca. We graduated another kid and three years later. Recently I picked up a copy of "Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits" by David Ortiz and Tony Massarotti, the Red Sox writer for the Boston Herald. When you pick up these kind of books, you always approach them with a sense of caution. Many times, these are "knockoff books, " written to exploit the market and make a quick buck from a celebrity who's hot at the moment.I remember in April 2005 when I picked up the book "Idiot," the book about Johnny Damon, written by Peter Golenbock. That book was absolutely one of the sloppiest written and badly edited books I have ever read in my life. It was loaded with not just typos but facts that the author simply got wrong. It was an embarrassingly bad book, quickly put together to exploit Damon's new found popularity after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. (And I wrote this about "Idiot" while Damon was still with the Sox, so don't accuse me of sour grapes because Judas went to New York!)So when I heard that David Ortiz had come ...
